Welcome Hello there! Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2020 issue of the It’s In Nottingham lifestyle magazine. We hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together, in partnership with retailers, city stakeholders and most importantly the shoppers of Nottingham. This issue, we feel, is a great reflection of what’s going on across Spring and early Summer. There’s also a few pointers that we think might help you enjoy your time with us in the city centre even more. If that’s even possible. Enjoy! Beverley Bailey IT’S IN NOTTINGHAM

Inspired by vintage fashion not keeping strict to the era though. I play around with colours, clash patterns and most importantly wear what i want to wear.
I'd describe my style as some what minimalistic, mainly made up of earthy tones that are staples in my wardrobe. Of course all paired with some quality footwear.
My style is anything that breaks the rules. I like to cause controversary and make people think outside the box. More is more!

You'll very rarely find me wearing bright colours, most of the time I wear black but generally worn with some sort of pattern. I feel my style is pretty androgynous and I don't like to put myself in a box or follow gender stereotypes.

I dress contemporary and street wear I'd say. I work in the city and I enjoy music with a band I'm in too.
My style is extremely eclectic, it varies from day-to-day and is usually dependant on my mood. It is massively inspired by the '20s '50s and '70s.

Debenhams
The role of the personal shopper is a key component in what’s special about how they treat their customers. Debenhams offer one-to-one appointments, groups bookings, along with a service for men. They can help you with everything from seasonal wardrobe updates, to finding that outfit for a special occasion. Booked from home, or directly in store; the service is available for free with no obligation to purchase. Appointment duration varies from an ‘in and out’ express appointment of 45 minutes, through to a whole wardrobe update which can last up to two hours. All this takes place in a private suite where clients can enjoy a coffee and a chat with their personal shopper. It’s here where they discover in detail what it is the customer is looking for, helping them pick out the items that match their requirements, all chosen from the great brands they have in store. Their suggestions may take clients out of their comfort zone – but this is where the fun is - and all part of potentially moving people forward with what they wear, what they like, and importantly what they might consider in the future. We’d sum up the experience of spending time with the personal shopper as all about having fun, experimenting and gaining confidence. Helping improve how customers look and how they feel. It’s so popular that lots of their customers come back again and again.

What makes a product vegan-friendly? The definition of vegan makeup is that it’s a product that doesn’t contain any animal by-products. A byproduct can be an animal ingredient or animal-derived ingredient. This includes honey, beeswax, lanolin, collagen, carmine (known by many names but is basically crushed insect body and legs to give the colour red!) keratine and guanine (aka CI 75170).

Makeover Magic Do you have a big event or a special occasion in need of just the right look? Then treat yourself with a visit to John Lewis’ Lancôme concession Tips & Tricks for the perfect look
PRIME FIRST
Always prepare your skin to allow your foundation to blend smoothly and avoid the product sliding around. Distribute your primer evenly between your nose, both cheeks, chin and towards your hairline.
FULLER LIPS
Try applying your lipstick to the outer edge of your top lip, getting it to look fuller and balance more with your lower lip. 16 / IT’S IN NOTTINGHAM
PERFECT EYES
When doing your makeup it is always best to start with the eyes. Begin by covering your lids with a light concealer and then use your eyeshadow to set. Use a blending brush to smooth any eyeshadow out and a smudger brush underneath the eye.
For a softer look, first wet your brush and use a darker colour, then wing it out using a eyebrow brush.

RAISE YOUR EYEBROWS
Use a brow definer pencil to outline your brows. Then use a brush to blend inwards, shaping as you go.
GLOWING CHEEKS
When applying your bronzer think about creating the figure ‘3’ on each side of your face. Start on your forehead, close to your hairline, and work it down below your cheekbone. Then sweep backwards towards the eye. TIP: When using darker tones, work brushstrokes down. Using lighter/brighter tones, push outwards. Apply blusher last to your cheeks, as it’s easy to overdo this if applied too early.

Precious Cells Lip Balm is perfect to hydrate and plump your lips.
EYES
Eye Cream
Use three blobs of eye cream under your eye and massage into the skin. This will help smooth your skin tones and can help reduce wrinkles with repeated use.

Doing Their Bit
Sustainable Nottingham How city centre businesses are making a difference DIESEL
LACE MARKET HOTEL
Diesel is formally committed to implementing a responsible business strategy that is respectful of people and the environment. Building upon this philosophy and its positively disruptive outlook, the brand's sustainability strategy is centred around four key pillars and commitments. These are to ‘Be the alternative’ – creating alternative, responsible products and packaging. To ‘Stand up for the planet’ – committing to climate action. They ‘Celebrate individuality’ – committing to developing a sustainability culture within the company and to ‘Promote integrity’ - working towards the highest social and environmental standards throughout its supply chain.
In December, Lace Market Hotel took a small step to make a big change at the hotel. Every year in hotels, hundreds of thousands of miniature plastic toiletry bottles get thrown away and end up in landfill. They took the decision to remove all single use toiletries from their rooms and replace them with reusable dispensers made of recycled materials. They have partnered with Natural Remedies who produce vegan friendly toiletries using 95% organic ingredients such as sage, blackcurrant, nettle and bergamot. They contain no colorants and are parabon and silicone free. They estimated that they were using 90,000 miniature bottles per year - which equates to almost 1 tonne of plastic waste. This simple change will make a massive difference.
New sustainable range of clothing to be released soon

CLEAN CUT KITCHEN
Sustainability within the Restaurant At Clean Cut they have a strategy to be fully sustainable within their restaurants. With this in mind, people may wonder why they only have one generic bin in the restaurant. As part of the intu Victoria Centre, they have a ‘zero landfill’ waste policy at their location. All waste is bagged in clear bags and sent to a waste processing facility within the centre, there, all the waste is sorted and sent for processing. All recyclables are to be recycled, compostable waste is sent to be composted and all other waste goes to the Nottingham District heating facility to provide efficient heating for the city.
Pioneering Sustainability TRANSPORT
Nottingham City Transport has the largest fleet of double decker Bio-gas buses in the world. Launched in 2017, the super environmentally friendly bio-gas buses reduce CO2 emissions by up to 84%* compared to an equivalent brand-new diesel double deck bus. Lower emissions mean a cleaner city for all! Another way to help reduce your carbon footprint when travelling to the city is by using the tram. The tram goes as far south as Clifton, all the way through the city to as north as Hucknall.

SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING
We asked Sarah from Shop Zero on St James Street for her take on how everyone can contribute to the greater good
1
Pack your own reusable bag and avoid plastic ones. There are lots of fold-up bags around now so, as the phrase goes, ‘no excuse, avoid single-use’.
2
Carry a reusable water bottle or cup. Loads of places offer the opportunity to ‘fill-up for free’. Look for the ‘Refill here’ signs. Also, an increasing number of cafes offer money off your coffee if you use your own cup. What’s not to love?
3
‘Buy once, buy well’. Choose well-made, long-lasting goods. And only buy new when you need to. Otherwise, check out Nottingham’s brilliant charity shops for a bargain. And get to know your local independent traders. They bring money, employment, creativity and originality to our City. After all, sustainability isn’t only about environment, it’s about sustaining people and the economy too!

The Old Market Square once again plays host to the magnificent Spiegeltent, offering visitors all the fun of a bygone era, reimagined The city brings music, circus, cabaret, theatre, comedy and burlesque to residents in April. With the unique ambiance of the famous Spiegeltent as the exquisite venue. Starting in Belgium at the back end of the 19th century, and translated as ‘mirror tent’, these travelling dance halls now regularly tour the world’s cities and festivals. Within this ornate world of wood and mirrors, the programme kicks off on Wednesday April 29, with a Just the Tonic comedy event, headlined by national treasure, Johnny Vegas. He is joined by comedians Kelly Convey and Scott Bennett, with the event compered by Darrell Martin, Just the Tonic Founder and organiser. Music comes in the form of Hope and Social, a band described by The Independent as ‘one of the UK’s top five live acts’. Eleven years into a six-album career, these veterans of thousands of shows are renowned for bridging the gap between the stage and audience. They are in town on Thursday April 30. Shlomo's Beatbox Adventure arrives on Saturday May 16. SK Shlomo is a world record-breaking beatboxer, creating music using just his mouth and a mic. On Friday May 1, The Gilded Merkin Burlesque and Cabaret returns. Described as a variety show packed with glamour, comedy and music - and produced by Nottingham born performer Scarlett Daggers - it stars only the very best exponents of the art. 26 / IT’S IN NOTTINGHAM

Matt Forde: Brexit, Pursued by a bear MAY 16
Shlomo’s Beatbox Adventure for Kids
On the Bill IT’S IN NOTTINGHAM CAUGHT UP WITH POLITICAL COMEDIAN AND NOTTINGHAM LAD, MATT FORDE, TO TALK ABOUT HIS UPCOMING SHOW AT THE SPIEGELTENT IN OLD MARKET SQUARE ON MAY 13 The current tour is called ‘Brexit, Pursued By A Bear’. Shall we begin by explaining the title? The last show was called ‘Brexit, Through the Gift Shop’. I wanted to do Brexit pun titles, so people know it’s going to be about politics, but still know it's going to be silly. This time I've come up with a Brexit pun that no one else can understand. It's a piece of infamous stage direction from Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, which is 'Exit, Pursued by a Bear'. Thinking about it, it's been a bit of a nightmare, really. Next time I'm going to just call it ‘Matt Forde Live!’ Does this form part of the show you will be performing when you visit the Spiegeltent in Nottingham? Yeah, it does. I've performed in the Spiegeltent in York and in Edinburgh, it's amazing, it's so good with a carnival feel, it's got a kind of old fairground vibe . Where is the weirdest place you've played? I remember doing an afternoon pub gig in Chesterfield. To make the mic lead reach I had to lean across the cigarette machine to speak. How does a homecoming gig differ to the rest of the tour, can we expect more local references, Derby County gags maybe? Oh, way more, way more. I'm already excited and nervous for it... it is by far the most important gig on the tour for me, definitely. There's going to be so many people I know there. Yes, there'll be lots of anti-Derby and anti-Leicester and some hyper-local stuff about local MPs I imagine.
What originally got you into comedy? I used to do impressions of teachers at the school’s talent show, I guess I was a bit of a nuisance really. And then I just started going to watch comedy at Just The Tonic, which was run by Daryl Martin at the Old Vic. It was incredible watching the likes of Peter Kay, Sean Lock, you know, all these people who went on to be mega stars, for just five quid on a Sunday night. I think I did my first gig when I was 16 here in Nottingham at the Malt Cross, they used to run a gig there called Mad Dog Comedy Club and that was it, I was just hooked, just completely obsessed. As a former political advisor, is politics something you would like to go back into full-time one day? Never, never, ever, ever, not under any circumstances! Things have become horrendous. I have so much respect for people going into politics now as I think it's the worst it's ever been. The personal cost of going in is so severe; I'm amazed anyone wants to do it anymore. Finally then, Matt. Obviously we want people to come along and see your show in the Spiegeltent in Nottingham. Why should folk come along? For the funniest night of their lives! What more could you want than a show full of impressions of Boris and Trump and Farage and everyone else? It's a complete mickey take of every political persuasion, so it's not a left-wing thing or a rightwing thing, I take the mick out of everyone and I'm from Nottingham, so you know, help a local boy out.

WE ALL KNOW THAT AN ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN NEEDS DOING, BUT IT CAN BE A BIT OF A SLOG. HERE’S SOME USEFUL IDEAS TO GET THROUGH THE JOB IN NO TIME Create A Schedule Know what needs doing. Start with the places that are desperate for a clean and finish with the places you clean routinely. Planning, room by room, and sticking to the plan maintains focus. Throw Stuff Out Decluttering as you go helps next time, every bit as much as it does in the here and now. And stuff left just ‘creating dust’ is bad for us emotionally and scientifically. And be tough. If it isn’t useful, it goes. Work Top Down Start up high with ceilings. Then dust – furniture and objects. Finish with the vacuum. It saves having to re-clean when dust settles. Get A Good Vac If your machine is old and past its sell-by date, it will take you a disproportionate amount of time to do the work. When things don’t seem to be progressing, that’s when we lose heart and interest. A ‘fit vac’ is a ‘quick vac’. Also, good cleaners come with all the right attachments, making it easier and more satisfying as we go. Think Green Try not to use expose yourself to nasty chemicals if you can avoid it. Not for everyone, but steam cleaners give you that deep clean we are all after, whilst remaining good for us all. No steam cleaner? The best natural combinations come in the form of white distilled vinegar, baking soda and water. All are affordable, non-toxic, and have stood the test of time. IT’S IN NOTTINGHAM / 33

“The idea behind this look is to get the most impact out of the least number of items. Bright colours, matched by tone, creates a look that ties together what on first impressions appears to be random elements. Fresh and vibrant yellows, pinks and greens chase any winter blues away.”
