Preface Architecture is the conversation and dialogue between the building environment , my idea and myvision to the world . It can never be static or specifically defined as I will keep studying and developing . This journal contained the two main project from the design studio alpha , ground conditions and dystopian dreams and presented four parts shown my developing journey of this beneficial and meaningful semester . During the process several developments and learning outcomes can be clearly seen in this journal , communicating my consistency progress and visible benefits that I have gained through attending the lecture tutorial and getting feedback through tutorial .

My name is Jinze Li and my friends here usually call me Leo . I originally came from Tianjin, China which is located at the north part of China. I had three year of the local high school experience in the western part of Melbourne - Westbourne Grammar School before completing the VCE exam and come to the University of Melbourne. My current interest and major are landscape architecture & Graphic design which my interest was shown early since my junior high back to China . Unfortunately , my enthusiasm in architecture and design was not supported by the education system in China until I came to Melbourne and attended Studio art and visual communication design as two of my six VCE primary courses . During my first year in the bachelor of design , i have finished one amazing studio FoDR and is currently enjoying my architectural journey with two studio , studio alpha and graphic studio which further reinforced my enthusiasm in model making as well as the fabrication .

GROUND CONDITIONS - PART1 LiJinze(Leo)-1074214 Studio 11 , Thursday , 1PM Studio Leader : Phil Burns
This sketch capture the mourning scene of the standing room cafe at the back of the MSD building with a bunch of people queueing up to purchase within the enclosed area , communicating the idea of crowd density as well as the shared spaces . The feeling of crowdedness can be explained by the activities inside the MSD building due to the school-staring period and students’ lack of sleep . All the figures in this sketch were kept in white in order to demonstrate the notion of space by clearly showing the proportion of the blank space . The reflections on the glass panels showing the exist of those transparent screen to separate the interior with the exterior . Additionally , the glass panels also provide clearly idea for the function of this enclosed space on account of the transparent nature which allow the people outside to recognise this coffee shop .
This sketch capture the lunch time view in front of the standing room cafe , demonstrating the idea of privacy and personal space , the shape of the bench seems to form an invisible screen , establishing a sense of privacy and isolation . This sketch illustrate the scene of a male student sitting on the bench outside MSD and taking more than half of the space that forms a private territory in comparison to other two-sided benches shared by multiple students . From observation , there’s usually one individual or a couple sitting on this bench probably due to its’ size but more significantly is humans’ need for personal space as well as the human nature to feel uncomfortable with strangers .
The sketch capture the exhibition space on the ground floor of MSD building , communicating the idea of private and personal space . The enclosing layout forms a territory which further shaped an introverted space for exhibition , these closing walls structure establishes a sense of privacy , isolation as well as intimacy . The two individuals in the scene shared this space which may result in an intimate conversation since they are sitting inside a enclosing area that reinforcing its security as well as the privacy . Additionally , several light tubes were installed at the top of the surrounding walls which create a unseen screen to ensure the territory according to its function for exhibition , and social contacts .
This sketch captured the grand stairs on south-east direction of the MSD building , located on the big stepping that leading from the ground floor to the second . These steps have greater height than the normal indoor stairs provide people from MSD a space to sit , reinforcing the hierarchy of the MSD building due to the dramatic change in height . This sketch was captured through a low angle from the ground height thus all the figures above the ground and walk path in the scene can share a relatively private space (as not many people walk through these big steps )and appears to be more powerful . This communicate the notion of shared&communal space with the function for taking rest and chatting .
This sketch was captured from the ground level of the MSD building , showing various people sitting on a long bench as the shared space , demonstrating the idea of the communal space as an open shared space for all the design students to sit and rest . This sketch was captured at approximately 12pm as probably the most busy peek hour of the day , the length of the bench provide students with enough space to share with others and at the same time allow enough interval space between individuals . This communicate the design approach of getting students enough space to occupy and fit the nature of human’s need to have enough private space .
This sketch captured the long bench outside the front door of the MSD building with the background of the natural landscape . The background bushes creates a boundary that capture a transition of the atmosphere of the building environment , the enclosing layout and the contracts between the human made bench to the natural landscape forms a territory as a private and isolated space . From observation , few people are willing to sit on this single side bench which there’s usually individuals and couples , indicating the human nature of feeling uncomfortable with unfamiliar subjects as well as the need of the private space . Thus , once a person occupies this space others will try to avoid using it unless necessary ( like Wednesday lunch time )
The sketch highlighted the head and floor plane , demonstrating the spatial context on the ground floor of the msd building . It is noticeable that the floor plane is sunken in comparison to the sitting area as well as the front entrance , and the change in ground plane level was labelled with three orange lines to show the variations in the ground heights . Since the floor changed in height and tiles angle , a point of intersection (unable to see in this sketch ) is appeared that showing a radial organisation of the ground plane . Additionally , as both of the floor and head plane are highlighted , it will be more intuitive for the audience to view the height of the ground floor which define the space according to the plane elements .
This sketch focuses on the elements of the sitting space that provides design students the resting and communication space. As highlighted in the sketch , all the sitting areas were raised to be lift in height than the ground plane , giving people a space to stretch their legs while providing them a comfortable sitting experience for the occupation . The elevated edges of the ABP library and the length of the bench offering enough sitting space for students in order to satisfy the needs during the busy peak hour .
This sketch captured the view of ground floor’s elevators and the distant back entrance of the MSD building , focusing on the electronic elements to keep msd from the basic operation . The light tubes that spread all around the head plane of the ground floor helps to create the spatial continuity and create a sense of movement by illuminating the main path within the building . The concrete ceiling are divided by lines that formed from the arrangement of light tubes corresponding to the organic flow of spatial movement in a certain path from front to the back entrance . Moreover , the elevators also act as the element that connects the space between the ground to the upper stairs , defining the connectivity of space in MSD .
This sketch focuses on the ground elements contains the floor plane as well as the stairway leading to the second floor . The stairs exhibits a dramatic change in height through the ‘’ bridge ‘’ that connects space from ground to the upper stair which forms the hierarchy organisation in order to define this highlighted space . Additionally , the black edges on each single stairs has the function of adding friction therefore the stairway are safer during the rainy weather . These stairs as the linear elements are correspond to others in msd together representing the connectivity of space .
The sketch described the back entrance of the msd building , communicating the difference in space and density between indoor and outdoor . As the double glass layer threshold to isolate the indoor environment , i t reinforce the security and temperature control for the building and the glass formed the volume with illusion of a rather open space .

My design portrays a small pavillion located within the open square with the function for resting and com- munication . The pavillion’s appearance and shape got inspired from the Pitjantjatjara camp ,as aboriginal people’s venacular and traditional architecture . This pavillion provide extra sitting places with the centralized and radial organisation to form the space . In order to salute to the aboriginal architecture , this design of the shell apeared to be inclined with an approximately 30. angle for the similar function containing the wind and rain protection . Additionally , the hollow-carved design provide the ventilation and extra sunlight that togeth- er formed the internal area as a warm and relaxing space for chatting and communicating . The colour of the main object are ( terra-cotta ; brown-orange) in order to be correspond to the colour of the background build- ing , acting in cooperation with each other and further create a sense of connection within audiences’ view .

The textures and the suface damages communicates the details analysis . A mixture of light grey and brown was used for the bench inorder to be correspondign to the materality as concrete and the damages were portrayed by same colour with less water therefore darker and represent the inside of a concreate material .
As a place for sitting , personally i found it is too close to the ground which forced occupants to either sit with their legs bent or extended straight out . This may comminicates a deliberate uncomfortable design due to MSD ‘s crowd density . As a result this kind of design may be more effective during the peak hour with less long-time occupations . This collage with the central design portrays a playground for kids and is located near the back facade of the MSD building at the University of Melbourne . The design ‘s shapes forms a bear with large body size that visually forms a small pavilion allow kids to stay play and daydream inside the structure . Additionally the bear ‘s body is further installed with a ‘’scarf’’ look slide for children to enjoy , they are able to get to the top platform through the stairs and getting down with slide . The notion of safety was communicated through the installation of several guard bars surrounding the top platform ( as it is higher than 1m) thus avoid kids falling off from the platform and ensure the safety of the playground .

This is the outcome of my third project of my design studio alpha , as a combination of manipulation of landscape as well as a design structure suitable and meaningful enough for the given landscape . This design is based on the character Nisho’s story with the landscape narrative that the world is currently have a deadly disease spread rapidly, the government impose restrictions on medicines and view any private storage as illegal activities . Nisho as the natural leader of the site is responsible for the drugs exchange that require a stealthy area for exchange . The design can be function in two directions , it have the programme function as an observation deck communicating the idea of camouflage , and the downstairs area is functioned as the exchange space for nisho to exchange medicine and drugs . The top floor were designed as an observation deck for the aim of letting mainstream people ignore nisho and others who are trying to get down to the exchange area that further communicating the notion of safety and private .

SITE PLAN - Lincoln Square scale 1:500 @ A3
my conceptual diagram , the idea is about a kind of balance between the area on display represented by the symbol of sun with the moon represented the hidden private space , that communicating the idea of camouflage . As a world with deadly disease spread rapidly, the government impose restrictions on medicines and view any private storage as illegal activities . Nisho as the natural leader of the site is responsible for the drugs exchange that require a stealthy area for exchange .
Spatial Progression Drawings
According to my one to fifty scaled plan and section , the drawing are aims to describe the moment of a lunchtime scene which is shown in some figures’ movement and behaviours . The reason for the time and space captured for this moment is that when having lunch , people are more likely to focus their attention on their own stuff , meals or cell phones rather than looking for things happening around , therefore they will be more possibly to ignore people who are trying to walk down to the basement . Their is a flexible timetable for the medicine exchange for example 12pm for some work days but may be cancelled or change to a different time emergency or high crowd density plus that the stairs assist people to walk downstairs are thin and narrow and the visitors’ sight lines are further hindered by a flower bed , reinforcing the safety and hiddenness of the structure . According to the drawing themselves , more detailed textures and lighting effects are shown on the vegetations , materials and figures and the section drawing has been taken from another section cut in order to display the scheme structure in a more clear way .
1:50 plan & section
Let’s first focus on these drawings with relatively larger scale . For my one to one hundred scaled plan and section the materials of timber , concrete and earth have been shown through the water colour textures some extra line works to portray the timber boarded floor . Lightning effect has also been shown in by adding shadows according to the sun direction This section drawing is corresponding to the section cut placed on my physical drawing which allow the exchange area to stand out and display more clearly
1:100 plan & section
The material study captured the elevation of flower bed where three material timber , concrete and earth are meet . The drawing has been done by coloured pencils to describe the specific texture appearance of each materials . The concrete shown the connect part to the concrete wall , timber’s texture portrayed with lines in a rhythm and the earth in the flowerpot shown some small stones underground . the object as a concrete desk is served in the exchange area and functioned as the temporary storage place during the exchange .
Material&Object study
Model Images
According to my box board model , the landscape was built based on the contour lines from original site and changed detailed angels or shapes inside the square range to ideally leading people to my desired routes . The circulation was considered in two main directions which allow people from the Bouverie street , Lincoln square south and north access to the main entrance near Swanston street as the desired way to occupy the scheme .people accessed from the main entrance will be lead to an observation deck that communicate my programme for camouflage and therefore the mainstream visitors are supposed to be attract and retain on this floor . On the other side the protagonist and other people involving in the exchange will secretly get down to the basement through a narrow stairs into the stealthy exchange area .
06 REFLECTIONS Throughout this amazing semester with the design studio alpha i have learnt several tangible skills of discovering deeper in the rhino’s function as well as intangible knowledge that assist me in understanding and employing the conventions of architectural drawing systems, including plans, sections, elevations, diagrams, three-dimensional representations, renderings and animations . Through the first mainstream project the ground conditions part one and two , i have been introduced to the socio-culture and behavioural phenomenon , familiar with the elements defining space , organisational strategies as well as the notion of spatial progression . According to the requirement , my drawing skill has also been largely developed . For the second project Dystopian Dreams , the idea several practise associated with the urban terrain have developed my thought in three dimensions through graphic, digital and physical modelling which will be beneficial for my future journey .
