PIECES OF ME THE BROKEN PIECES OF YOU, SEPARATED PIECES OF ME, NOW I’M NO LONGER WHOLE. I WAS ALWAYS WILLING TO TAKE YOUR GOOD AND YOUR BAD, YOUR BLACK AND YOUR WHITE, YOUR LIGHT AND YOUR DARKNESS, BUT I NEVER THOUGHT YOU WOULD DRAG ME INTO YOUR DARKNESS AS LONG AS WE WERE TOGETHER. I THOUGHT OUR TOGETHERNESS WAS STRONG ENOUGH, TO KEEP US FROM THE BATTLE OF EMPTINESS. I USE TO BE WHOLE, NOW I’M SPLIT IN HALF, SEARCHING FOR PIECES OF ME. YET, THE PIECES OF ME THAT ARE STILL HERE, STILL PRESENT, STILL REACH FOR YOU.

According to the CDC, since there is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. As far as the CDC knows based on the information and data gathered thus far, the virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. The respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes can travel and land in the mouths or noses of individuals who are nearby (within about 6 feet) or possibly be inhaled into the lungs which puts that person at risk. At this point, steps to protect yourself are staying home, cleaning your hands often, and avoiding close contact by social distancing.

CORONAVIRUS COVID-19 If you are sick, stay home and isolate yourself from others in the home. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow, throw used tissues in the trash, and immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. These surfaces includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. Clean them with detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. Complete this steps often at home to ensure cleanliness. If you begin to experience severe symptoms such as loss of breath or high fever, you should call the hospital upon your arrival to let them know you’re on the way.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a serious disease, a disease that is taking the lives of people around the world and unfortunately, the number of confirmed cases continues to increase especially in hot spots of the nation; therefore, we as Americans must take necessary precautions for our health and wellbeing. Statistics don’t lie so let’s make a solid, collective effort to not become a part of that statistic. Let’s stay inside to stay alive.

After an incredibly difficult morning, complete with an array of emotions, my family and I returned home to what we thought would be a peaceful rest of the day. We were wrong. Upon briefly separating from one another, my brother entered the room abruptly, screaming the words, “Kobe died!” with an intense pain stained to his face. Despite his facial expression, I laughed and replied, “No, he didn’t.” “Look on your phone,” he replied. I typed “Kobe Bryant” into my search engine and my phone revealed the truth. Each article explaining the exact same thing yet I read every single one, praying for an error, a mistake. And with every article, my heart shattered piece by piece, the pieces growing larger as further details continued to emerge. When it was reported that Kobe Bryant’s 13 year old daughter Gianna “Gigi” Bryant and seven other loved and important individuals, two of which were children, were also taken from the world, I became completely numb from this tragedy. Days, weeks, months have gone by and it still doesn’t seem real. I fully understand the concept of life, as one who lives must die but for the life of such a legend like Kobe Bryant to end in that particular way is a challenge to comprehend. I often imagine what his last thoughts were before his helicopter crashed into the mountains of Calabasas. Did he know? Was he afraid? Was his mind only on his daughter and the rest of his family? I imagine those answers and those feelings but they’re too painful to even imagine because no matter what I arrive, the truth, the end is still the same. It’s not a story I can create in my head and change the ending. It’s real life and real families struggling from an unimaginable pain and loss. I grieve as a lifelong fan but my sadness and anger is nothing to the sadness of their loved ones. As a lifelong fan, I bounce a basketball ball with Kobe Bryant in mind. I shoot a turn around fadeaway jump shot with Kobe Bryant in mind. I pick myself up off the ground after being knocked down with Kobe Bryant in mind. I shoot a ball of paper into a trash can with Kobe Bryant in mind. I watch the game of basketball with Kobe Bryant in mind. I look to the sky now with Kobe Bryant in mind. Kobe Bryant once said “Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all on opportunity for me to rise” so I asking YOU right now to rise, despite your fears, despite your doubts, rise. Pursue your dreams, pick one, put all of your eggs in one basket and work until that dream becomes a reality. Mamba mentality wasn’t just for Kobe. We can all implement his mindset into our lives and honor his legacy. Thank you, Kobe. I’ll love you, forever. Lena Hardy

TRE’ BUSSEY

THE MAN. THE PLAYER. THE LEGEND.

Describe yourself in three words: God, Family and Driven. What has the game of basketball taught you? The game of basketball has taught me a lot of things from being discipline, hard work, dedication and many more things. I could go on for awhile about how much I’ve learned playing basketball. When did you know you wanted to pursue basketball as a career? I don’t know the exact age but I would probably say high school when I knew I could make a career out of playing. What's your go-to move when you need to score the ball? Different variations of step backs. What are the perks to playing basketball overseas? Seeing the world, trying different cultural foods, adapting to different cultures, meeting people, and playing basketball around the world. As a basketball player overseas, where have you traveled thus far? I have traveled to Kosovo, Germany, Poland, Russia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Belgium and Qatar. Have you learned any new languages while being overseas? I wouldn’t say I know different languages but I do know a few words and phrases.

Can you recall one of your favorite experiences since graduating from college? Proposing to my fiancé while we were in Germany together was big for me. Something I won’t forget. What or who inspires you? My family, my fiancé and friends all inspire me. This issue is a tribute to the legendary life of Kobe Bryant, what did his life and career mean to you? Were you a fan? I was Kobe fan when I was younger, me and my mom but when LeBron came around I kind of went away from Kobe. But the great respect I had/have for him never went anywhere. His passing away really affected me because I was so intrigued to see the things he was doing after basketball in his life. I’m a hard worker so I couldn’t not be a fan of his but to see him carry that same passion AND love in his personal life and professional life outside of basketball was big for me. I don’t think there was anybody like him. Who is legendary to you and why? I could name a lot people but we just spoke on Kobe so I will stay there. Kobe I think was legendary because of the impact he had not only on the basketball court but the positive impact he had on people’s lives in general across the world. I think the world sees that. He was a great player and person and that’s legendary to me.
