The Gardener Popular culture is full of references to the contrasting approaches of the Architect and the Gardener. The essential wisdom contained in this analogy, is that one can plan every detail of a project, every measurement and dimension, but the best to be expected of the final outcome is that all goes exactly according to plan. The preparation of a garden however, is an act of care; an act of faith. Laying the ground as generously as possible for whatever may grow, and then standing aside and allowing it to become. It is an acknowledgement that, subject to our human limitations, input from within our own judgement is likely to be only a repetition of past experiences, and rarely generates any radically new ideas. And an awareness that opening up to the possibility of the unexpected can mean results one could never have imagined. After all, every good garden ends up with something unplanned, not planted by the original architect. For 2019 we set a course early on to facilitate the circumstances for some magic and some mystery in this year’s program. The parameters were set in the form of six curators, all visionaries and individualists with such richness of perspective and experience, that wisdom and good taste dictated we merely open the gate and allow things to get growing. We warmly invite you to spend the next few days with us, experiencing the results of their dedication and ours in the same spirit of openness with which it was cultivated.

Ticket & Info Area + Wristband Pickup Our Ticket & Info Area is located in TivoliVredenburg, Vredenburgkade 11 (right next to Utrecht central station). To ensure entrance to festival venues, you need to exchange your ticket for a wristband here. Please note: you can not pick up your wristband at other festival venues. Please keep in mind that all venues have limited capacity. Make sure to be on time if you want to be assured of entrance. Some performances may be loud. Please provide your own earplugs or get them at venues like TivoliVredenburg, De Helling or EKKO.

Curated by Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed presented by Le Guess Who? & Centraal Museum James Merry is a visual artist, originally from Gloucestershire in the UK, who is now based in Iceland where he has been living and working with Björk since 2009. As her co-creative director on visuals, he created masks and headpieces for a number of live and video performances. Four of these beautifully handcrafted pieces will be exhibited. Outside of his work with Björk, James Merry is primarily known for his hand embroidery on sportswear and has collaborated with institutions such as the V&A, Gucci, ShowStudio and Opening Ceremony. Gabrielle Goliath – Elegy
presented by Le Guess Who? & Centraal Museum Initiated in 2015, Elegy is a long-term commemorative performance project by South African artist Gabrielle Goliath. Staged in various locations and contexts, each performance calls together a group of female vocal performers who collectively enact a ritual of mourning. Durational and physically taxing, the performance sustains a kind of ‘sung’ cry – evoking the presence of an absent individual. Please note that this exhibition will be closed on Sunday November 10.

Trainings for the Not-Yet is a project convened by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, in collaboration with many others. The exhibition unfolds through a series of trainings in civic engagement, radical collectivity, and active empowerment, bringing together collaborators from various fields and communities to create and practice alternative imaginings of being together in the face of the pressing emergencies that shape the world today.

The Sound Of One Computer Thinking
Happiness explores the area where man and artificiality converge, where synthetic substances help us to re-humanise, maxi-humanise or, for a while, abandon our humanness altogether. In his latest art installation, Dries Verhoeven explores the world of artificial happiness that is available to us in the form of drugs, painkillers and antidepressants. On the street there is a small pharmacy. A humanoid tells us about the various products we can use to tweak our serotonin and dopamine levels, and by doing so, shape our reality.
The Sound Of One Computer Thinking invokes a paradox or question that is essentially unanswerable. Are love, death or humour uniquely human or biological experiences? Is the digital experience truly immaterial? Is labor indistinguishable from life? Digital manifestations of Eros and Thanatos, creation and destruction, are at play in this exhibition consisting of a sensorial and sensual array of videos, installations and wearable technology on display, both enhancing the mind and body yet co-opting and commodifying our movements, thoughts, desires and affects.

Eva Spierenburg – Disappearance In Slow Motion
Louis Andriessen and Madelon Hooykaas – Alles is Rond
Visual artist Eva Spierenburg from Zeist is the winner of the K.F. Hein Stipendium 2018. Physicality is omnipresent in Spierenburg’s work. Whether it is the visualization of separate body parts, or of objects that stand in relation to our body: the entire installation emanates a sense of the body. Her exhibition ‘Disappearance in slow motion’ refers to a form of femininity that’s rarely encountered in art history.
Alles is Rond (All Is Round) was made in the city where Louis Andriessen and Madelon Hooykaas both grew up: Utrecht. Both artists have worked together before, but this is the first time that they have collaborated on a video installation. In All is Round, Madelon Hooykaas portrays the presence of nature in Utrecht by means of detailed images, and combines these with Andriessen’s hands and her own gaze in the camera.

Curated by Patrick Higgins; in cooperation with Gaudeamus AEAEA is a new duo ensemble of composers and performers Patrick Higgins and Nicolas Jaar. The aim of the group is to develop immersive musical environments, sonorous desert islands that both react to and redevelop against the live compositions that utilize live instruments and computers. Both Higgins and Jaar will resample and reprocess each other’s instruments in real time — unfolding a new vision of modern ritual music and electroacoustic experimentation.

Arp Frique presents Improvised Suites For Analog Machines With a super contagious cocktail of Afrobeat, disco and funk, Arp Frique is the past, present and future scrambled together in one groovy, bright-lit musical skirmish. The Dutch producer’s new live project Improvised Suites For Analog Machines presents a tribute to some of the most influential synthesizers of the 70s and 80s. This free-spirited music is performed with Surinamborn keyboardist Erik “Keysie” Ritfeld as its main catalyst, a prodigal force in The Arp Frique Family and former collaborator of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Michael Franti and Aston Barrett.

Caspar Brötzmann has embraced a similar vocation as his father, free jazz legend Peter Brötzmann: disrupt conventions through the virtues of noise, innovation, and chaotic physical performance. His inaugural band Caspar Brötzmann Massaker embodies the blueprint for what has been a rich and cunning career of sonic disobedience. With his power trio, Brötzmann unleashes some of the most nauseating, gleefully vulgar sounds ever discharged from an electric guitar.

Curated by Moon Duo With her signature Southern drawl, bold experimentalism and whip-smart lyrics, Tennessee-based artist Bbymutha has established herself as a bona fide hip-hop truther. As one of the most refreshing role models and MCs to have emerged from the rap game, her work debunks a lot of myths surrounding sex, motherhood and identity. Her track ‘Rules’ became a viral sensation on SoundCloud, receiving praise and endorsement from the likes of SZA, Björk and Kehlani.

Dur-Dur Band The story of Somalia’s legendary DurDur Band is one of regrouping and resilience. In the 80s, their vibrant Somali funk music embedded the nightlife of the capital of Mogadishu. Since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was banished in 1991, the city’s cosmopolitan prosperity became fractured by religious militias and suicide bombers. Now scattered throughout East Africa and Europe, the spirit and legacy of the original Dur-Dur Band remains omnipresent within the eight-piece Dur-Dur Band International.

Curated by The Bug Naming a band after something concise and universal seems to naturally generate some of the most physically punishing music in existence. If Sunn O))) and Sleep are part of a three-headed beast of “monolithic minimalists”, Earth is probably the remaining entity accounted for. With their latest album ‘Full Upon Her Burning Lips’, the core duo of Dylan Carlson and Adrienne Davies tap into the Platonic ideal of Earth— an elemental band, where every guitar note and every strike on the drum kit carries the weight of the world.

Eiko Ishibashi Eiko Ishibashi’s acumen as multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter speaks for itself: she spans genres like classical, jazz and improvisation with aplomb, crossing creative swords with likewise fearless experimentalists Jim O’Rourke, Merzbow and Shintaro Sakamoto. The Japanese artist lets her quirky personality permeate through her left field and commissioned works, as well as her more pop-oriented solo records.
Godflesh
Curated by The Bug Godflesh is an austere beast that intersects elements of industrial, metal, noise rock and post-punk in truly defiant, engrossing fashion. With its juggernaut drum thuds, shredding bass throbs, cauterized guitars, and demented vocals, Godflesh still maintain the lawlessness that eluded their many imitators. After a cooldown period of 13 years, Justin Broadrick and his kin unleashed ‘Post Self’ without further commentary: mere words will always come up short to encompass both the sheer brutality and feral beauty that is Godflesh.
Greg Fox – Drummer in Residence The cartoon physics of Brooklyn experimental outfit Zs, the Lovecraftian doom tandem Ex Eye with Colin Stetson, the blast beat barrages of Liturgy; Greg Fox has an uncanny knack for transmuting the drums beyond just rhythm. And because of this versatile trait, he is the perfect wildcard for this year’s Le Guess Who?. So check all the closets and cupboards. Look under all the beds. ‘Cause you never can tell: there just might be a Greg Fox in your house.
Gruff Rhys The words ‘wacky’ and ‘profound’ often walk hand-in-hand in the world of Gruff Rhys. The Welsh artist is best known as spearhead of perpetually wry pop oddballs Super Furry Animals, though his side projects and solo records are just as brilliant, both on a sonic and conceptual level. Rhys’s most recent solo album ‘Babelsburg’, a satirical portrait of the United States in 2018, juxtaposes deft orchestral pop with his habitually incisive wit.

Curated by The Bug US-born, Swedish-based artist Kali Malone builds a truly remarkable synthesis of analog and electronic music, drawing in listeners with discernible warmth and timelessness. Whether she’s utilizing a choir or an intricate modular system, Malone’s captivating repetition-based tracks make the it all sound lived in and transformed by their natural surroundings.

Los Siquicos Litoraleños Brain-melting psychedelic pop that trespasses your neurons like a dream machine on some spaceship. Argentina’s Los Siquicos Litoraleños is truly a baffling operation, embracing wacky experimentation that scrambles homegrown folk traditions, rural psychedelia and post-modern sounds with anarchic abandon. Sometimes their records have the quizzical quality of a radio play, applying Residents-like absurdity, nimble latin infections and lo-fi tape manipulation.

La Bruja de Texcoco Hidden Musics
If it makes any sense – mystical phenomena rarely do – Octavia Mendoza Anario, aka La Bruja de Texcoco (‘The Witch of Texcoco’), reinvigorates the canon of Mexican folk by deviating from it. La Bruja recalibrated her classical teachings to create an astonishing tapestry of traditional Mexican music, baroque and jazz, playing various string instruments, percussion and harp. Moreover, she is a disarming, mercurial stage presence whose voice boosts an already enriching age of trans and queer narratives.

Embracing music from both bygone and current eras, Miranda Cuckson is regarded as one of the most acclaimed performers of classical and modern music. The New York Times called Cuckson “a prodigiously talented player who makes even the thorniest of contemporary scores sing”. Indeed, she is an adventurous spirit who has moved listeners in concert halls, schools and universities, galleries and informal spaces with her dexterous mastery of the violin and the viola.

Hosted by FACT Ziggy Devriendt doesn’t exactly tiptoe around his many music-related interests. Whether he’s hosting his monthly show at London’s NTS radio station, running streaming platform Stroom.tv or composing/DJing under the Nosedrip-moniker, the Belgium-based artist upholds a zealot’s devotion to processing and spreading unique sounds to the furthermost peripheries.

Vicky Chow
Named after a Yoruba deity, OSHUN preaches spirituality, rebirth, identity, unity and the blessings of Mother Earth with an Afrofuturistic center of gravity. The duo of Niambi Sala and Thandiwe channel the beat wizardry of J Dilla, the activism of Fela Kuti and the nonconformity of Sun Ra, a multitude of sensibilities molded into their palatable, superterrestrial brand of neo-soul, R&B and rap.
“Her playing conjures a vision of some vintage piano genius like Art Tatum coming back to life and getting high on post-minimalism,” Pitchfork once concluded. Indeed, if some renowned composer wants to explore something radical and rhythm-based involving the piano, they probably have Vicky Chow on speed dial. Next to plunging headfirst into thrilling musical ‘what if’-scenarios, the Canadian virtuoso has reinvigorated pieces by Steve Reich, John Cage, and Bryce Dessner.

No T ve hurs m day be r7 Vladimir Ivkovic presents: 20 years after Suba / Rex Ilusivii’s death In 1995, Serbian-born, Brazil-based producer Mitar Subotić – also known as Suba and Rex Illusivii – created ‘Wayang’, an album that would be considered visionary even by today’s standards. Twenty years after Subatíc’s untimely death, this lost classic remains an absolute crowning point within the experimental electronic music canon, lacing together polyrhythmic inflections, archived sound, industrial atmospherics, vocal chanting and more to create baffling music that’s both cinematic in scope and propulsive in its execution. Vladimir Ivkovic, DJ and founder of imprint Offen Music, will present a deep listening session with unreleased and exclusive Suba / Rex Ilusivii material that isn’t available to listen to anywhere else, to remember Subotić after his death, 20 years ago.
Visible Cloacks & Yoshio Ojima & Satsuko Shibano You know that mechanism where you whisper a message in a circle of people – and as its passed on back to you, that message becomes distorted? That’s a little bit what Portland duo Visible Cloaks did with Japanese musicians Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Sibano on their joint record ‘serenitatem’. Instead of whispers, they exchanged MIDI-based musical ideas. As a result, they made music that blurs concepts between the human-made and machine-made, almost sentient in its progression and emotional charge.

William Tyler & Mary Lattimore Collaboratorium

Harpist Mary Lattimore and guitarist William Tyler may have honed radically different string-instruments, their respective cunning for vivid storytelling with instrumental music is remarkably alike. Both have recently relocated to Los Angeles, sparking new creative endeavors. Lattimore released her spectral masterpiece ‘Hundreds Of Days’, whereas Tyler’s ‘Goes West’ further augments the wholesome spirituality and wanderlust embedded in his playing.

Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Goldflesh, Napalm Death) and Kevin Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) initially consolidated their mutual love for abrasive noise, dub and industrial as Techno Animal. If that endeavor is the embryo, then consider ZONAL the divine final form. The third enforcer in this extravaganza of noise is none other than former Le Guess Who?curator Moor Mother, adding her incendiary, politically-charged poetry. Such a momentous alliance is bound to become one loud, transformative experience.

Combining two influential heroes of adventurous noisy music, ZONAL marks a relatively new collaboration between Kevin Martin and Justin K. Broadrick. Best known as The Bug, Kevin Martin has played a key role in pretty much all areas of electronic music over the last thirty years. Founder of the iconic grindcore band Napalm Death, Justin K. Broadrick also is the mind behind the innovative musical projects Jesu, Godflesh and Final.Â

The two have an extensive history of dual collaborations. Throughout the 90s, when both were playing with bands like GOD and ICE, they joined forces as Techno Animal. Formed in London at the beginning of the 90s, Techno Animal released six full-lengths in ten years via impressive labels such as Matador, City Slang and Position Chrome. While the duo’s signature take on industrial hip hop continuously influenced peers and followers alike, they transformed their creations into a new potent collaboration. Bolstered by the new ‘ZONAL’ approach, Martin and Broadrick still perform Techno Animal tunes on stage.

ZONAL’s debut ‘Wrecked’ came out via Relapse Records right before Le Guess Who? The first half of the record consists of six songs with Philadelphia-based artist Moor Mother. presented by Le Guess Who? & BAK – basis voor actuele kunst Le Guess Who? and Jeanne van Heeswijk connected the Chicago-based pianist, clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid with visual artist, activist, and womanist Patricia Kaersenhout. Both women tap into the meaning and history of black life and experimental forms of radical self-care through various artistic works and projects. '(New) Formats of Care in Times of Violence is a communal training convened by Kaersenhout. She involves participants in collaborative embroidery, while engaging in storytelling, dialogue and spiritual healing as a training for collective resistance and a commitment to living otherwise. presented by Le Guess Who? & FOTODOK & Casco Art Institute: Working For The Commons Being born and raised on the island of Curaçao, the work of Kevin Osepa (1994) revolves around his identity and the identity of Afro-Caribbean youth in a postcolonial world. The visuals this Utrecht-based photographer (and recent Unseen Talent Award winner) creates, plus the stories he tells, are highly influenced by his own youth. While the themes he explores are autobiographical, his work can also serve as a quasi-anthropological study. Using different experimental techniques, he creates colourful visual stories that explore themes such as religion, African diaspora, and family.

Raw and smoldering, it follows a young reggae DJ (Brinsley Forde, frontman of landmark British group Aswad) in Thatcher-era Brixton as he pursues his musical ambitions, while battling fiercely against the racism and xenophobia of employers, neighbors, police, and the National Front. Also starring Jah Shaka, operating his Sound System in a soundclash scene he directed himself.

Ayalew Mesfin
Ayalew Mesfin & Debo Band Quintessential Ethio-groove performer Ayalèw Mesfin has joined forces with the renowned US-based ensemble Debo band for his first European live performance ever, and in truth, few collaborations make more sense. Mesfin’s music rebelled vigorously against Ethiopia’s dictatorial oppression of the 70s and, like many of his contemporaries, he struggled against obscurity amidst political turmoil. Distributing 4000 cassettes for free - later becoming collector’s items - led to several months in jail for Mesfin and a prohibition to play music for 13 years. Last year, the compilation album ‘Hasabe (My Worries)’ was released after Mesfin’s music had gone unheard for 40 years - either on stage or on record -, leading to renewed recognition of the artist. Le Guess Who? celebrates this legendary artist with a show featuring the Debo Band, who formed in 2006 to keep the spirit and craft of Ethiopia’s golden age of pop alive. By joining forces with Mesfin, they symbolize an invigorating closing of the generation gap together, celebrating one of the greatest Ethiopian discographies of the 70s.

After initially cutting her teeth with critically-acclaimed drone ensemble Vibracathedral Orchestra, Bridget Hayden’s first solo outing ‘An Indifferent Ocean’ turned a lot of heads with its nightmarish noise currents, conjoining dense and frantic depth with delicate drifts. Much like fellow composer Grouper, Hayden’s work inhabits that spectral zone between noise and music, and her latest offering ‘Pure Touch Only From Now On, They Said So’ is as pure a distillation of the human spirit into sound as you’re ever likely to hear.
Efterklang singer Casper Clausen presents his (yet to be released) solo music, made up in a small studio by the river in Cacilhas (Lisbon). With songwriting still in progress, Casper has only played solo shows in Portugal, but will now be joined on stage by Dutch light-designer Nico de Rooij. Drifting with the intuition and stream of thought, Clausen’s music is in flux, balancing between sound collages and songwriting. These are spacious songs, guided by krautrock grooves, and made up from organs, synths, YouTube samples, field recordings, and led by Casper’s hypnotising vocals.

So, becoming one of the most exciting new faces in classical music was written in the stars. Still in his twenties, Tao lent his prodigious talents to a fair percentage of symphony orchestra’s on this planet. Conrad is more than doing his part in unshackling the great classical works from the restrictions of traditionalism and dogma, avidly examining their place within our modern existence.

Ayalew Mesfin is a true hero of the famed 70s Ethio-groove scene. Influenced by many African-American musicians, Mesfin managed to blend centuries of Ethiopian musical tradition with Western instrumentation. His pieces were among the funkiest and grooviest footnotes of this fertile era in the country. Even though there were political conflicts in Ethiopia during that time, he passionately resumed performing and writing. He was forced to make an agreement to cease music in exchange for his release from jail during the Derg regime, but managed to keep his music circulating underground.

Ayalew Mesfin formed his orchestra Black Lion Band in 1973, right before the Ethiopian Civil War. Tamiru Wolde A’b, Teshome Deneke, Tamiru Ayele, Tamirat Ziltini, Tekle Tesfaezgi and Giovanni Vincenzo were members of this collective. As they kept releasing thousands of cassettes for free, Black Lion Band performed at wellknown venues across Addis Ababa – more specifically, Patris Lumumba Night Club and Mesfin’s own Stereo Club.

During the 70s, his singles were released by Amha Records and Kaifa, though it’s fair to say it almost took 30 years for the rest of the world to fully witness Mesfin’s artistry and wonder. The eighth release of Francis Falcetto’s inspiring compilation series ‘Ethiopiques, Swinging Addis Ababa’ was the first record out of Ethiopia to include a Mesfin song, a rock-driven delicate cut called ‘Hasabe’. Last year, Mesfin released his very first album, a collection of unheard Ethiogroove songs compiled as full-length release by Now Again Records entitled ‘Hasabe (My Worries)’. It took over 40 years to fully realize the project.

“Social issues and social problems inspire my songs,” Mesfin says. His melodies and lyrics clearly reflect the true spirit of a generation that struggled against dictatorial oppression. Now Mesfin is going to perform the very songs he wrote more than 40 years ago for the first time in Europe, during Le Guess Who? For this special performance, he’ll be joined on stage by US-based ensemble Debo Band.

Deerhunter During this decade, Atlanta art-punkers Deerhunter have further established themselves as one of the finest bands alive, consolidating an unmistakable sound with restless reinvention. The electronic-driven masterpiece ‘Halcyon Digest’, the rabid post-punk of ‘Monomania’, the classic rock indebted ‘Fading Frontier’ and the minimalistic, American goth gloom of ‘Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?’; these are four radically different records, but quintessentially Deerhunter all the same.

Why not rapturously exult in spooky fairy tales, shoestring techno raves, flamboyant light shows and interpretive dancing all at the same time? Steinunn Harðardóttir paints a mysterious world with music and performance, hypothesizing the Sphinx as an alien creature, conjuring aquatic landscapes of golden boars and giant bats. Click your heels twice and take a very deep breath: you are not in Utrecht anymore.

When ex- COIL member Drew McDowall decided to revive the group’s 1998 masterpiece ‘Time Machines’ to the present, two decades after its release, the joke was probably not lost on him. With each of Time Machines’ four tracks inspired by a type of hallucinogenic drug, the twisted fluctuations and tones do exactly what the title promises: warp and manipulate your entire perception of time. If it’s an escape from time you crave, let your psyche wash away in Drew McDowall’s high mass of pitch black protoindustrial drones.
Girl Band When Girl Band prowl the stage, you’d best prepare for a barbwired wallop of first class agit-rock. This Irish wrecking crew has become one of the most fearsome live units of the decade thanks to their shredding and propulsive performances. And somewhere down the dark corridors, you can hear the demented straitjacket howls of frontman Dara Kiely, an unrelenting fury waiting to detonate at the slightest prick. In September, Girl Band released their highly anticipated second album, ‘The Talkies.’

Spazio Disponibile presents Aimée Portioli, also known as Grand River, is a Dutch-Italian composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Berlin. While mainly connected to the fields of electronic music and sound design, her compositions transcend these genres. Her background counts years of performing traditional music, as well as a sound engineer and composer through her agency TapTempo studio. Her work is known equally for her film scores as for her experimental and ambient projects.
Grupo Pilon The most riveting, template-shifting music often comes from a state of displacement or transience, and the Luxembourg-based, Cape Verde-born ensemble Grupo Pilon is certainly no exception. Founded by second generation Cape Verde immigrants, Pilon’s music wasn’t rooted in Lisbon like many of their forebears, but in Western Europe. As a result, the band’s percussive synth-driven kuduro dance music breaks the rulebooks with its raw dexterity and sheer exuberance.

In the early 70’s, free-jazz evangelists Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids sprung from the tutelage of the great Cecil Taylor. Drawing furthermore from the vast cosmos of Fela Kuti, Pharaoh Sanders and Sun Ra, the Pyramids’ holistic pilgrimage comes with a powerful mission: celebrating our equality from a Pan-African center of gravity. In 2007, three decades in after disbanding the Pyramids, Ackamoor and his brethren returned in full glory, releasing ‘We Be All Africans’, ‘Otherworldly’ and ‘An Angel Fell’ in prolific succession.
A pact made between Justin ‘JK Flesh’ Broadrick and Takeaki ‘GothTrad’ Maruyama when they released split-EP ‘Knights Of The Black Table’ resulted in heavy-handed industrialfueled dread that runs rampant. This gripping jousting match between an British icon of heavy guitars and a Japanese dubstep deconstructionist will surely leave its ripple effects long after they’ve taken the stage. Using brutal electronics in their respective arsenals to go medieval on one another, it’s a showdown worth witnessing a thousand times over.

Since its inception a decade ago, King Midas Sound’s gloom-ridden transmutations of dub, lover’s rock and ambient music have made an unyielding impression. Producer Kevin Martin (The Bug) initially formed the project with vocalists Roger Robinson and Kiki Hitomi, becoming an ever-shape-shifting unit in the years that followed. This year, the duo returned with ‘Solitude’, a bleak and barren spoken-word/ambient record that laments the crumbling of a relationship.
As a teenager, Klavikon’s Leon Michener saved years worth of allowance to get himself a small analogue Moog synth. Needless to say, Michener has yet to surface from the rabbit hole experimentalism he plunged into since. As Klavikon, he generates a synthesis of electronic music with the prepared piano, using outrageous objects like gerbils and robot dogs (!) to generate cascading rhythmic patterns.

Composer and cellist Leila Bordreuil grew up in rural Aix-en-Provence, France, before moving to Brooklyn in 2012. Having composed in silence for most of her life, the bustle of Broadway didn’t disrupt her craft, but fueled it further, as her ears were already attuned to Japanoise and Musique Concrete at the time. Bordreuil can ensnare you into otherworldly states, making the cello sound as if you’re adrift in a warm polyphonic ocean of sound.
Indeed, as adroit players of the harp and the violin respectively, Marilu Donovan and Adam Markiewicz’s joint project LEYA inspired some emphatically gorgeous music. With the help of fellow experimentalists Eartheater, PC Worship and Sunk Heaven, the New York duo’s debut LP ‘The Fool’ sounds like a treasury of spirituals sung from the deepest, darkest crevice of an alien planet. With haunting multi-layered vocals, ominously spiraling melodies and fractured, earthshattering noise, LEYA’s music instills fright as much as wonder.

As Lone Taxidermist, musician, performance artist, costume maker and provocateur Natalie Sharp relishes in the grotesque. Her unruly and flamboyant electro-punk performances make audiences an active part of a multi-sensory experience, applying an unorthodoxy of instruments, body art and wonderfully absurd stage props. Sharp isn’t simply playing for laughs however: she is a true firebrand who’s anti-conformist artistry and positive revolt shatter threadbare notions of the human body, technology and sexuality.
With their curious mix of infernal freejazz and post-rock, LOTTO are one of the most inventive groups of the Polish underground. Embracing the minimalist spirit of The Necks, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Earth and fellow countrymen Innercity Ensemble, Łukasz Rychlicki, Mike Majkowski and Paweł Szpura appear very intent on bridging music’s unexplored gaps. LOTTO shows are gripping, suspense-filled incursions, able to conjure surreal imagery within the economical set-up of upright bass, drums and guitar.

Love Supreme You may have heard Love Supreme before without realizing it: the French duo’s engrossing track ‘Lonely Feelings’ was prominently featured in the trailer for the latest Black Mirror season. That track happens to be a wonderful microcosm of the Parisbased act’s overall sound: dark soulful baritone vocals anchor widescreen synth pop, marrying a vintage, grizzled charm with the forward-thinking and futuristic.

He still knows his way around them resounding low bass frequencies, but peppers it up with a multitude of palatable sonic flavors.

Ernestus’s seven-year collaboration with Ndagga Rhythm Force started during a trip through Senegal, where he was looking for tribal Mbalax rhythms used in traditional Saba music. Their thrilling 2016 album ‘Yermande’ is a dazzling percussive beast, clipped with piercing electronics, thumping bass and Mbene Diatta Seck’s soaring open-throated spirituality.

Mary Lattimore is a Los Angelesbased musician and composer who uses her Lyon and Healy concert grand harp to conjure up beautiful glacial melodies that evoke a host of memories, landscapes and allusions. In live performance, Lattimore reveals the impressionist magic of her chosen instrument, blurring classical technique and ambient electronics to beguiling effect. Just last year, she released her second LP on Ghostly International, as well as a collaborative album with Meg Baird.

Some bands exist to obey your sweetest aural proclivities, but Mueran Humanos is no such band. This Argentinian, Berlin-based duo aims to unnerve and shudder with their strangely fascinating, queasy concoction of noise, post-punk and industrial. They fit right in the tradition of Suicide, Coil, Royal Trux and Throbbing Gristle with their unruly performances, obfuscating the boundaries between theatre and ritual.

Mueran Humanos: Hospital Lullabies (film) Berlin-based, Argentina-born noiseniks Mueran Humanos enlisted Carmen Burguess to direct a companion film for their last LP ‘Hospital Lullabies’, which will be screened before the group’s performance. The film is an extension of the band’s own unique mystique, summoning a surrealist nightmare of arcade poetry, avantgardistic noisescapes and twisted romanticism.
Living is all about perspective; for instance, the darkest depths of the sea can be quite daunting, but once you’re swimming amongst the cliffs and coves, it can feel as if you’re flying. That’s more or less the wonderful confusion Mega Bog instills on her stunning latest LP ‘Dolphine’, conjuring a nautical journey of seventies folk, soft rock, new age and psych jazz. Erin Birgy’s whimsical lyrics have the quality of an abstract paint brush, pulling emotions out of their default state and into this vivid and fantastical bliss.

Curated by Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed In the universe of Mykki Blanco, art and real life don’t imitate each other, but are symbiotic and reciprocal. Few artists could infiltrate mainstream audiences with cinematic, experimental tracks such as ‘High School Never Ends’ and ‘Fendi Band’. Blanco’s heady artistry intersects poetry, activism, visual art and performance art as an acute force of nature. It’s no wonder collaborators such as Madonna, Kathleen Hanna and Yves Tumor gravitated towards them like moths to light.

Not Waving & Dark Mark
Mythic Sunship Equally adept at noisy, feedbackladen jams as spaced-out, repetitive voyages, Mythic Sunship’s selfstyled “anaconda rock” has been described as one of the most riveting movements of the European psych scene. Malleable and expansive enough to swallow free jazz, japrock, kraut, space rock and stoner whole, this Copenhagen collective slithered into a new layer of skin with latest record ‘Another Shape of Psychedelic Music’, adding saxophone to their already unique blend of genres.
Not Waving & Dark Mark This blood pact marries the inkblack, minimal productions of Alessio Natalizia (aka Not Waving and member of Kompakt stalwarts Walls) with the smoke-suffused vocal drawl of alt-rock minstrel Mark Lanegan. Not surprisingly, their shared creative dominion inhabits an incredible riches of influences, ranging from the gloom-ridden dirges of latter-day Scott Walker to the windswept, arcane energy of Moebius and Popol Vuh.
Oiseaux-Tempête & Friends Oiseaux Tempête’s cross-cultural, multi-genre improv rock has a tendency to unfold in places of turmoil, recording records in Greece, Turkey and Lebanon in the past. The core duo of Frédéric D. Oberland and Stéphane Pigneul strongly embraces the communal and collaborative aspects of music. Upcoming LP ‘From Somewhere Invisible’ takes that belief to a whole new level, congregating G.W. Sok (King Champion Sounds, formerly The Ex), Jessica Moss, Mondkopf and Jean-Michel Pirès at Hotel2Tango, the studio workspace of Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem In My Heart). All of these musicians join Oiseaux Tempête for a special performance on stage at Le Guess Who?.

In their 2018 Best Albumslist, Aquarium Drunkard described William Sol’s project as “an alchemist of dark voodoo boogie that is entrancing and hypnotic.” From eerie detuned piano atmospherics to avant-blues licks that smoulder like burning embers on the funeral pyre, Prana Crafter’s sonic spells are enveloped by a dense and rugged charm.
A librarian by day, Richard Youngs spends pretty much every other minute of his waking life living and breathing music. His fascinations reach all corners of the world, from Syd Barrett’s quirky folk to Gregorian chants. Youngs has somehow finds time to record and produce music himself, ever since he became captivated as a kid by that good ol’ reel-to-reel tape machine. Three decades in, this Glaswegian polymath’s fearless creative spirit continues to amaze and enthrall.

Few musicians are as versatile, risk-taking and compulsively explorative as Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. This nomadic musician redefined math and noise rock with 90 Day Men and helped spearhead druidic drone metal deities Om. Under the moniker Lichens and his own name, Lowe conjures astonishing ecosystems of modular soundscapes and alien-sounding vocal improvisations. As fickle and unpredictable as Lowe’s career has been, his well-scrutinized body of work is perpetually driven to amass new skills, new collaborators and a new understanding of sound.

Curated by Patrick Higgins Norwegian-born, Berlin-based artist Stine Janvin has the special ability to morph and manipulate her vocals into beautiful sound abstractions, to the point even where you forget it’s a voice to begin with. On top of that, Janvin experiments avidly with unusual concert formats, sometimes deliberately removing herself from the stage to incite a deeper listening experience. If Janvin has proven one thing throughout her immersive study of the human voice: live music can still be a highly moving experience without relying on performative emotion.
Curated by The Bug; hosted by FACT Slikback is Freddy Njau, an emerging Kenyan producer currently situated in Poland. Associated with the infectious Kampala collective Nyege Nyege, his 2019 EP Tomo renders footwork, grime, dancehall, and trap in a shadow realm of immersive abstraction. Though many producers have successfully merged the aforementioned genres, Slikback’s minimal take on them feels truly singular, achieving that rare balance between hazy cinematic mystique and contagious momentum.
Sarah Davachi
Sonic Boom
That strange intermediate state during lucid dreams, when the body physically reacts to images summoned by your imagination: that’s a pretty apt way to describe the impact of Sarah Davachi’s ambient compositions. This Canadian-born, Los Angelesbased artist uses both acoustic instrumentation (piano, woodwinds, strings, organs) and electronics (analogue synths, modular synths & drones) as tools to straddle the chasms between harmonics and noise. True to that very method, she’ll perform a live composition with church organ and electronics.
Flaunting an impressive resume of bands (notably as singer/guitarist of trance-rock cosmonauts Spacemen3) and production credits (Panda Bear, MGMT, Beach House), Pete Kember’s genius has now spanned over three decades. Under the Sonic Boom-moniker, Kember planted the seed of Spacemen3’s hypnotic band-oriented psychedelics and sprouted it all the way up into the firmament of electronic and ambient music. Seminal LP ‘Spectrum’ turns 30 this year, a shining beacon of the power of collaboration, something Kember has always hung his hat on.

Stranded FM Having become somewhat of a mainstay in Utrecht, Stranded FM celebrate and share music from all over the globe, becoming the city’s bastion for discovering fresh sounds. During their four-year run, this Dutch underground radio station is built on a sense of community, a fertile DIY-mindset, plus a wholehearted love for cutting-edge music. During Le Guess Who? they host Pandora Foyer on the festival’s Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
TENGGER
Curated by Moon Duo Drone-based music often wields the power to blur that stark hierarchy between audience and stage, to level everyone in the room as both participant and listener. Korean duo TENGGER are no exception to that rule, but they do stand out. TENGGER take a very tactile approach to drone music, exposing its blood and guts with organic-sounding elements like harmonium, drum machine and vocal improvisation. So their self-coined ‘new age drone magic’ hallmark is apt, as they relish in both the spirituality and physicality of their work.

The Raincoats
The Raincoats In 1979, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it to be—an act of raw expression, not any one sound. Their anarchy was poetic. The group’s debut album ‘The Raincoats’, which Kurt Cobain called “wonderfully classic scripture”, was released 40 years ago at its radical beginnings, setting a crucial precedent for feminist work within a DIY context. The Raincoats have offered creative and spiritual inspiration for several generations of artists such as John Lydon, Kim Gordon, Carrie Brownstein, Bikini Kill, Cate Le Bon, and Angel Olsen.
Träd, Gräs och Stenar (Träden) Curated by Moon Duo
For a band whose name translates to “Trees, Grass and Stone”, obviously, these lionized Swedish innovators have upheld their utopian ideals both in ethos and sound since the early 70’s. Träd, Gräs och Stenar straddle the extremes of prog rock bluster and DIY-radicalism like few bands have done: creating their own instruments, promoting active crowd participation in live shows and even cooking macrobiotic meals for their audience. Though founder Thomas Mera Gartz passed away in 2012, the group marched on with a revolving cast of established and new players under the name Träden.
Tyondai Braxton
Curated by Patrick Higgins Like Patrick Higgins, Tyondai Braxton is an innovator in the purest sense. As a former member of Battles, he ventured far beyond the outer dimensions of what we consider pop music. Braxton earned his stripes as a composer by working alongside luminaries such as Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet, and last year, he helmed a massive Manga-inspired production called ‘Telekinesis’. Ranging from glitchy electronics to full-on orchestral pizzazz, the one constant in his work is his power to shatter institutionalized music tropes and to reign chaos.

Tyondai Braxton & Greg Fox Collaboratorium
At this year’s Le Guess Who?, drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Ben Frost, Ex Eye) will be the festival’s whimsical X-factor. One of the artists he will court is composer and former Battlesstalwart Tyondai Braxton. Both artists are headstrong figures in conjuring sounds once deemed impossible, and have the fortitude to push their sophisticated understanding of music to another level. This alliance is musical mad science at its best.

Curated by Jenny Hval Vilde Tuv has been dubbed as Norway’s finest one-woman orchestra. With just voice, bass drum and guitar at her disposal, Tuv’s songs can swell from raw minimalism to celestial beauty on the slightest whim. Her roving spirit became all the more evident when she performed a moving flute-and-electronics symphony on a cruise ship, described as “a blend of Chinese folk music, new age, 90s Eurotrance, ambient and contemporary collage for the digital ADD generation”.

Curated by Jenny Hval Vivian Wang is one of the founders and multi-instrumentalists of Singapore-based art rock ensemble The Observatory. After initially honing her skills as a classically trained pianist, Wang approaches music as a fearless experimentalist and individualist since 2008. The one rule she does apply is to always break free from established genres and localized music tropes. Next to music, Wang is what you call a jack of all trades, moonlighting as a TV presenter, film producer and music supervisor.

The Burial Of Kojo
Zerzura
The Burial Of Kojo follows the story of Esi, as she recounts her childhood and the tumultuous relationship between her father, Kojo and her uncle, Kwabena. After Kojo goes missing on an illegal mining expedition with Kwabena, Esi embarks on a magical adventure to rescue her father. Directed by music composer and musician Samuel “Blitz” Bazawule, the film chronicles the tale of two brothers through the gifted eyes of a young girl who transports the audience to the beautiful lands of Ghana and other worlds that exist between life and death.
In this genre-defying film, Zerzura follows a young man from a small village in Niger who leaves home in search of an enchanted oasis. His journey leads him into a surreal vision of the Sahara, crossing paths with djinn, bandits, gold seekers, and migrants. Narrated throughout with improvised instrumental guitar from protagonist Ahmoudou Madassane, written, directed and developed with a local Tuareg cast and Sahel Sounds’ Christopher Kirkley, Zerzura mixes folktales with documentary, to explore Saharan dreams and imagination.

Black Mother
Following the footsteps of Islamic mystics on the Indian subcontinent of Pakistan, the Swiss director Annette Berger managed to document the spiritual everyday life of the mystic Gogha Sain and master singer Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and his sons. As different as the path of these two mystics is, they have one thing in common: only those who can recognize themselves, can respect their fellow human beings. Closer to God reflects on the unique ancient heritage of the undivided subcontinent, and its transmission to the next generation.Â
Part film, part baptism, in Black Mother director Khalik Allah brings us on a spiritual journey through Jamaica. Soaking up its bustling metropolises and tranquil countryside, Allah introduces us to a succession of vividly rendered souls who call this island home. Their candid testimonies create a polyphonic symphony, set against a visual prayer of indelible portraiture. Thoroughly immersed between the sacred and profane, Black Mother channels rebellion and reverence into a deeply personal ode informed by Jamaica’s turbulent history but existing n the urgent present.

No S ve atur m day be r9 Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. The sprawling universe that is the great Acid Mothers Temple was formed in 1995 by Kawabata Makoto. This fabled Japanese collective always held a deep dedication and devotion to improvised music. From psychedelic freakouts to Stockhausen-inspired noise incursions, from minimalism to 70’s prog rock; to go from Black Sabbath all the way to Terry Riley, Acid Mothers Temple is your best gateway drug. Now with a history of over two decades, and a discography of over one hundred releases, the group shows no signs of relenting in the pace of its creative energy.
Acid Rooster Acid Rooster are pretty much a wet dream for heads who cram their cabinets with Amon Düül, Spacemen 3, Wooden Shjips and Magma. The dynamics of this band diverge from weightless, spaced out aerobatics to the more sublime, monolithic jams. These guys deliberately avoid generic and succinct ditties: each track is an epic journey into experimental rock’s most uncharted domains.

Ahmed Ag Kaedy
Curated by Fatoumata Diawara Many nomadic Tuareg artists channel and preserve the vibrancy of life that was once the everyday in Mali. Ahmed Ag Kaedy initially set out to do the same, but instead his haunting eighttrack LP ‘Akaline Kidal’ introspectively captures the more forlorn current state of affairs in the Kidal region. The stripped-down nature of Ag Kaedy’s music evokes the bare remnants left of the homeland he is banished from, but hope still shimmers brightly within his guitar playing: like that first glint of sunlight rising over the murky sandcovered hills.
A conversation with Ian Brennan Hidden Musics
Grammy-winning producer and author Ian Brennan has accumulated a resume that would make anyone in his fields blush. Brennan’s most pertinent and important work, however, isn’t as easily described with cast-iron achievements. Recent projects include ‘I Have No Everything Here’, – a bundle of songs performed by the Malawi prisoners of Zomba Central Prison – and ‘God Is Not A Terrorist’, the very first recordings of Pakistani khayal master Ustad Saami. These undertakings umbrella Brennan’s pursuit to highlight music that’s underrepresented or downright obscured within the global scale.

Aldous Harding Pop music canon has always compelled the listener to unravel the mystery behind the song. But the music of Aldous Harding inspires something arguably more powerful: an individual whose voice can seamlessly blend and blossom within the most bewildering of backdrops and characterizations. The New Zealand songwriter’s latest LP ‘Designer’ renders instrumentation and voice into the most vivid and impressionistic of scenes. In her own words: “It’s the greatest show on earth you shall receive.”
Ami Dang Ami Dang, a Sikh-American electronic pop artist living in Baltimore, splurges the canvas with a stupefying range of influences, including Indian hymns, Bollywood hits and nineties diva house. She swirls and spirals all those reference points into pop music brimmed with overdriven raga cadence, sitarspangled harmonics and spiritual incantations.

The Berlin-based duo’s profoundly impressive debut ‘Another Life’ shatters the fractured, often outlandish fabric of the modern human experience. Amnesia Scanner explore concepts of digital sentience, that fragile threshold between apocalypse and salvation and information overload with celebratory glee, implementing stomach-churning beats and basses that kickstart both psyche and anatomy.
Angel Bat Dawid & The Brothahood Angel Bat Dawid’s first album ‘The Oracle’ provides a new radical benchmark for contemporary jazz music, capturing a unique mystique within its economical recording methods. Meditating on the writings of Yusef Lateef and Margaret Burroughs, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the great jazz staples and even Mozart, this emerging Chicago-based pianist, clarinetist and composer carves out her own big-hearted artistic pursuit; how music can be a medium for self-improvement, curiosity and community.

Together, the most revered merchant of noise and two of the most resounding voices in grime form an alliance of gritty UK fringe music that simply knows no equal. These three artists will stretch the fabric of dub, reggae and dancehall to bludgeon mind and body well into the red numbers. But even with the trio spelunking the deepest, darkest caverns of the sonic spectrum, Flowdan’s commanding presence is always unpinned by dense, often brutally funny storytelling. Manga Saint Hilare tells stories of life on the outskirts of popular culture with rapid flows, incredible technique, and true grime productions.

Curated by Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed Along with Shy Girl and Sega Bodega, French artist and producer Coucou Chloe is the co-founder of burgeoning label/collective NUXXE. Her malformed take on pop music is as mind-melting as it is urgent, ripping the elements of hip-hop, industrial, sampling and electropop asunder, with performances marrying chaos and catharsis in likewise unruly fashion. Speaking of fashion: Coucou Chloe was also a valuable contributor to Rihanna’s iconic Fenty X Puma runway show.
Bremer/McCoy Jonathan Bremer and Morten McCoy are two Danish musicians knee-deep in many different endeavors. Bremer is a renowned jazz player, producer and owner of the Unity Rec. label. McCoy, meanwhile, is a pianist, composer, teacher and DJ with a fascination for West-African music and Jamaican sound system culture. As a duo, Bremer (acoustic bass) and McCoy (piano, wurlitzer and tape-delays) produce melodic and meditative music with their custom-built soundsystem.
Brian Chippendale & Greg Fox Collaboratorium
With Brian Chippendale and Greg Fox – two figures of drum royalty – are in the neighborhood, we felt a deep urge to bring them together in the same room. Both artists have had a similar vocations within their respective bands and projects: reconfiguring our notions of what a single individual behind a drum kit is capable of. With double the trouble, there’s no telling what kind of chaos shall materialize.

Deerhoof is one of those fantastic beasts the world has been lucky to find, an anomaly of a band that can twist any crunch of noise into saccharine hookheavy pop euphoria. Their wide-eyed trial-and-error performances are so incredibly infectious that it’s probably for the best to consider everything ‘part of the plan’. Deerhoof’s 2007 masterpiece ‘Friend Opportunity’ just became a whole lot friendlier at this year’s Le Guess Who?, with Brooklyn percussionist-trinity Tigue adding their own oddball minimalism into the mix.
DJ Firmeza
Príncipe Discos presents; hosted by FACT DJ Firmeza is a member of the Príncipe Discos crew, one of the most interesting and landmarkshifting movements within the modern European club scene. This Portuguese artist conjures a percussion-laced hybrid of Angolan dance workouts with penetrative house music. In all their boisterous multi-layered bluster, Firmeza still somehow manages to instill a deep and soulful physicality into his productions, with sets as hypnotic as they are hard-hitting.

Christopher C. King Hidden Musics
Christopher C. King’s relationship with the folk traditions of Epirus, a mountain region connecting Greece with the southern parts of Albania, occupies a special place in his heart, driving him to ask the most essential of questions, like for instance, why humans make music in the first place. DJ Quesadilla and DJ Fitz, two swashbuckling archeologists of music who habitually turn dancefloors all over the world into journeys of sweet sonic oblivion. The former is one of the most prominent figureheads in Lisbon, not just straddling underground and pop in the merriest of ways, but also a bona fide connoisseur of good food and fun. The latter – dubbed the Voodoo Priest Of Turntables – is one of the world’s primary authorities in making obscurities part of a larger canon, proving that music discovery and all-out raves are best served together.
DJINN, an alliance formed by musicians in Swedish outfits Hills and GOAT, has quickly flourished into a marvel in and of itself. Extracting sonics from the fabric of Alice Coltrane’s astral jazz majesty and Albert Ayler’s harmonious folk movements, DJINN’s music truly emanates this monumental metaphysical feeling. You could swim in this group’s hypnotic lunar textures and mirage-like bliss for eternity without a care in the world.

Aligned with vital Lisbon imprint Príncipe, Marfox is part of a generation of Portuguese musicians empowered by the affordability of recording stations and audio equipment, using music as a vehicle for cross-cultural exchange, global community building and breaking free from archaic paradigms.

Curated by Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed Felix Manuel’s ears are attuned to the spontaneity of jazz while his production chops create original compositions out of a wellspring of samples, textures and beats. Manuel’s extraordinary 2018 album ‘Portrait with Firewood’ presents his most intimate outpouring yet, rooted in his relationship with the upright piano but blooming out from under the soil with vast electronic miscellany. And, by doing so, DjRUM straddles the digital with the organic in deeply personal fashion.

Doug Hream Blunt In the late 80’s, Doug Hream Blunt moonlighted music with a job at a care home in San Francisco. As a relative late bloomer at age 35, he started writing songs after attending a How To Start A Band-course, playing his lo-fi brand of soul, funk and R&B for patients. At the time, a viable career in music seemed like a cul de sac, unbeknownst that his shoestring-version of said stylistics would be in vogue three decades down the line. Eventually Luaka Bop (David Byrne’s label, who also exhumed William Onyeabor’s music) reissued lost album Gentle Persuasion, which earned Blunt new fans in Ariel Pink and Dean Blunt. The latter’s stage name is actually a homage to him.

Faten Kanaan
Like Stereolab and Broadcast exemplified so fervently before them, Empath’s offbeat brand of guitar pop turns discord and noise on their upside, turning and twisting them into agents of joy, playfulness and bewilderment. The band’s much-acclaimed 2019 LP ‘Active Listening: Night On Earth’ acts as the musical equivalent of taking a humongous bite out of a grapefruit dipped in acid, relishing in its dopey, fuzzed-out delirium.
Somehow, Faten Kanaan composes mesmeric, hypnotic music without the use of sequencers or arpeggiators. With that tranquil sense of endlessness as her core principal, she tells evocative stories with both sound and silence, generating sweeping cinematic landscapes, pensive character studies and dramatic suspense. Kanaan is a fresh antithesis to the notion that electronic music is rigid and binary by default; her music sounds alive, immediate, vulnerable and expressive.

FIS
Tongue-in-cheek, hilarious and often controversial, Ghanaian duo FOKN Bois coined their sound as gospel porn rap, which might be a cryptic way of calling their art slyly subversive. Their music has been known to challenge the status quo of Ghanaian society and to highlight social and political issues, with an infectious mix of satire, shocking sloganeering and performance art. Even in their charity work, FOKN Bois tend to turn things on their upside: they recently started a campaign in Accra, the capital of Ghana, to raise money for the poor and needy in the US.
‘FIS’ stands for ‘forever in search’, and in all respects, this is exactly the intent of producer Olly Peryman. The monumental soundscapes of FIS highlight that sense continuity over our very earthbound concepts of beginnings and endings – or life and death – composing sonic forays of cosmic splendor and crystallized calms. Peryman’s work evokes starry-eyed awe, zealously reaching out to the great beyond.

No S ve atur m day be r9 Gyedu-Blay Ambolley & His Sekondi Band Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is the true originator of simigwa-do, a Ghanaian fusion of afro funk, soul and jazz. His work with the Uhuru Dance Band and the The Apagya Show Band (the latter with one-time mentor Ebo Taylor) was sometimes dubbed as hiplife, combining highlife’s multi-guitar dance band grooves with early forms of hip hop. Backed by the Sekondi band, an ultra tight alliance for the better part of the decade, Ambolley will sweep Le Guess Who? off its feet with a wide assortment of floor-filling jams.

Curated by Jenny Hval Japanese musician and sound artist Haco received international recognition as the founder, singer, and composer of legendary avant-pop group After Dinner. Hailed as one of the first female proponents of Onkyo equipment, Haco’s work transcends conventional genres and national borders, as she became known for repurposing field recordings and environmental sounds to create surreal widescreen compositions and productions. One of her more recent works, ‘Qoosui’, fuses Japanese traditional music with free-improv, shoegaze, musique concrete and rudimentary electronics.
HHY & The Macumbas Porto collective HHY & The Macumbas compose mind-blowing permutations of experimental jazz, dubbed-out noise, and hypnotic African folk. Lead by artist Jonathan Saldanha and a rotating cast of players, this curious group draws from the militant energy of marching bands of the Ottoman empire, dark subterranean scenery and a sui generis ability to convert traditional styles into haunting sonic abstractions.

Music derived from Rastafarian sound system culture has known many incarnations over time, but Jah Shaka remains true to its spiritual roots and essence. He arrived as a teenager from Jamaica in London in the late 50s when racism against black immigrants reached its zenith. Under the tutelage of Freddie Cloudburst, Jah Shaka became an essential figure within the British dancehall and dub scenes of the 70s. And to this day, this enigmatic Zulu Warrior (his real name is still a mystery) remains a vital and uncompromising artist, performer, activist and humanitarian.
Isokratisses Hidden Musics

Female vocal ensemble Isokratisses both uphold and reinterpret one of the world’s oldest remaining folk music traditions: the polyphonic songs of Epirus. Thanks to the vast mountain ranges of Albania and a terra firma already pretty remote from Western influence, these laments remained an insular force of celebration and hardship for centuries, passed down generation by generation. Isokratisses are the latest wielders of this singular musical heritage, its elemental power still intact and untainted from Byzantine times to this present day.
Italia 90 Serrated guitar assaults, check. Sinister bass rumble, check. Piercing drums, check. And a sardonic sneer that oozes pure misanthropic disdain, well, check. Indeed, Italia 90 checks off a lot of boxes for fans of Wire, Gang Of Four and The Fall, with a blistering post-punk foray that will reduce even the sturdiest trunk into a chaotic flurry of sawdust.
Joseph Shabason Joseph Shabason demonstrated his mastery of woodwind, horn and brass instruments on iconic records such as Destroyer’s ‘Kaputt’ and The War On Drugs’ ‘Lost In The Dream’. But it’s Shabason’s most recent solo album ‘Anne’ that’s truly a personal, captivating document, collaborating with his mother in what Pitchfork describes as “intergenerational trauma in frank discussions where nothing is held back sonically or emotionally.” It’s music that presents a brave and free-form inverse of the jazz and soft rock stylistics that defined Shabason’s earlier session work.

Whether it’s a stage, a computer screen or a page from a book: Jenny Hval’s multi-disciplinary work aims to break beyond these confining zones to form a deeper connection with her audiences. The coy, conceptual LP ‘Blood Bitch’, the utopian meditations of 2018’s ‘The Long Sleep’ and the hyperrealist novel ‘Paradise Rot’ are just a few examples of the playful ways this Norwegian artist circumvents our expectations, notions, and habits. It’s an artistic pursuit Le Guess Who? wholeheartedly admires and endorses, so Hval’s turn to curate her own lineup feels long overdue. Jenny Hval’s ‘The Practice of Love’, which she’ll perform at Le Guess Who?, will explore sonic, visual and choreographic ideas while transforming voices, sounds and even bodies into texts, in a process that Hval herself describes as a form of magic. With a multi-national ensemble including experimental musicians, vocalists, dancers and video artists, this new project extends Hval’s work into new and even more challenging territory.

Ko Shin Moon The duo Ko Shin Moon are entertaining in a similar way as back when you changed the instruments of sample tracks on a keyboard, just out of sheer curiosity how it would sound. Musicians Axel Moon and Niko Shin splice traditional string instruments and vintage synths, reconfiguring them into the paradigms of dancehall, chaabi, funk, new wave and spaghetti western soundtracks. A classic and infectious case of, ‘wow, this actually works’, mashing familiar elements together to make music that sounds both original and incessantly fun.
Klang & Ivan Vukosavljević present ‘The Burning’
In cooperation with Gaudeamus Ivan Vukosavljević’s brand new work arms Ensemble Klang with an array of deconstructed electric guitars, the ensemble reborn as prepared/tabletop/eBow guitarists. ‘The Burning’ is a hypnotic and intense 45-minute long live composition that moves between the transformed guitars and Klang’s regular instruments. The work creates a sound environment, an architecture, through which the players navigate and interact.
Khana Bierbood
Lalalar
Great pop songs with magic sprinkles of Eastern soundtracks, Spaghetti Western’s spacious twang and some grooving yé-yé sounds, that’s Khana Bierbood in a nutshell. Not surprisingly, the Bangsaen Beach Thailand-based group found an early champion in Kikagaku Moyo’s Go Kurasawa, who helmed the prosaically-titled debut ‘Strangers From The Far East’. Smart money says Khana Bierbood won’t be strangers for much longer, given how immediately satisfying their jams are, both sound-wise and execution-wise.
Istanbul’s Lalalar remind you of your favorite 80’s cult show theme, and simultaneously sound like a delightful dumpster dive of spaghetti western-psychedelics, Anatolian funk, sampling and hazy electronics. The one constant: Lalalar is the type of band you want to move to with abandon. The title of scorching debut single ‘Isyanlar’ translates to ‘rebellions’, and that’s more or less the gist of how this bunch operates on stage.

Lasse Marhaug
Lakha Khan is a living legend of Rajasthani folk music. As the undisputed master of the sindhi sarangi, Khan is one of the last remaining Manganiyars to have honed this complex instrument. In doing so, he pushes the centuriesold musical tradition of Rajasthani and Multani folk and Sufi music forward. Khan’s music is truly secular and straddles both the classical and folk domains, with a vast songbook that incorporates Meera bhajans, Sufi kalaams, popular Hindi tunes, and the ancient stories and oral histories of the region, spanning the western Indian sub-continent.
A true scion of the experimental noise scene, Lasse Marhaug embodies the term noisenik and then some. The Norwegian artist frequently applies a brutalist heavy metal sensibility to his potent and loud live sets. Marhaug has played under a preposterous number of projects and ensembles, most notably DEL and Jazkamer, and collaborated with the likes of Sunn O))), Paal Nilssen-Love and Maja Ratkje.

The title track of Lifafa’s most recent album ‘Jaago’ tells you all you need to know about the Indian producer, veering from its swooning, rustic flirtations to joyous electronic resplendence. Suryakant Sawhney has spent five years exploring uncharted terrain in his homeland: electronic music that not only speaks in sonics, but also of words and meaning. With his instinctive take on melody and cadence, Lifafa’s music is both spiritual and sensual in its nature.
Those familiar with acquainted acts like Meridian Brothers and Romperayo already how deliciously fun, kooky and strangely sophisticated Los Pirañas are on stage. But, to spell it out for the yet-to-be-initiated, these Colombian Bohemians perform their twisted take on homegrown cumbia, African folk and latin with punk rock intensity and jazz-like flexibility. Obviously, that makes Los Pirañas the perfect band to help discover dance moves you never even knew you had.

Curated by Jenny Hval After notable stints as Inga Copeland and Hype Williams (the latter with Dean Blunt), Alina Astrova once again brandishes her signature Baudelairean hybrid of pop and stripped-down techno as Lolina. Recent EP ‘The Smoke’ offers a strange intersection of eerie moods, morbid humor, and playful sensuality. The more elusive Lolina’s music gets, the more magnetic, a strange contradiction that only makes sense when you witness her perform with everyday equipment like a Dictaphone, a CDJ, an iPod Shuffle and a digital camera.

Makaya McCraven Regarded as one of Chicago’s most versatile and in-demand drummers, Makaya McCraven moves between genres like jazz, hiphop and funk at lightning speed. Unquestionably respected as a jazz artist, he believes that a receptiveness to other styles is what truly makes a good jazz player. Ceaselessly inventive and productive, McCraven worked with an impressive array of world class musicians, including Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Bernie Worrell, Soulive, Charles Neville, Marcus Strickland, and Shabaka Hutchings.
Melissa Laveaux Mélissa Laveaux’s most recent album ‘Radyo Siwèl’ reclaims the Ottawa-born, Paris-based songwriter’s Haitian roots with a collection of native folk spirituals. The number of influences she channels – psych rock, calypso, folk pop, and punk – would be considered dazzling if they didn’t manifest themselves in such deft, understated fashion. Laveaux’s work brims with defiance, cheekiness, and pride, reconnecting lost traditions into new cultural, mythological and lingual narratives.
Minyo Crusaders Minyo Crusaders breathe new life into traditional Japanese folk songs (‘minyo’) by merging them with Latin, African and Caribbean rhythms and flourishes of exotica. By doing so, the 10-piece ensemble creates some of the most infectious, fresh sounding cross-continental roots music in years, proficient in both punchy melodies and inventive arrangements. Their debut album Echoes of Japan has earned them plenty of praise and fans along the way.

After 15 years of performing for passersby at Paris’s Line 2 Metro, Algerian musician Mohamed Lamouri’s trademark ragged voice and buoyant Casio keyboard melodies are reaching ears all over the world. Lamouri’s 2019 LP ‘Underground Raï Love’ demonstrates his unusual lo-fi take on Algerian raï folk music, a movement known over the decades for its free radicalism in expressing ‘taboo’ subjects like love songs, youth culture and hedonism. Traditionalists and Salafists have attempted many times over to censor raï music, and though Lamouri is visually impaired, he clearly recognizes the vital genesis of his work: one of his biggest heroes is Cheb Hasni, the popular raï singer who was tragically murdered in 1994.

Curated by Moon Duo Psychedelic/krautrock mystics Moon Duo are comprised of Ripley Johnson (Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada (Viva La Void), with John Jeffery manning the skins. The Oregon band’s trademark sound is as much acquainted with minimalist pop as the louder, more cosmic torrents. On stage, this band manifests like a living painting, punishing and hypnotic at the same time. Because of their all-embracing nature – 80’s disco, occult literature, electronic music and film soundtracks – a Moon Duo record never orbits the same area twice. Those who have witnessed Moon Duo’s performances can confirm how quickly they’ve evolved and thrived: they have risen up, understatedly, as one of the most intoxicating live acts of this decade.

Murcof’s deep fascination with classical composers such as Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki is quite evident in his unprecedented approach to electronic and ambient sonics.
Mythic Sunship Astral Family Collaboratorium
Step inside the tractor beam, because at Le Guess Who?, Mythic Sunship will organize a momentous assemblage of wondrous sound. Of course, this Copenhagen quartet has room aplenty for its fellow inquisitive passengers, including the cosmic sitar deviations of Ami Dang. This hourlong performance will be the first, last and only of its kind.

Lifting the sound of urban Portugal to a global scale has made Nídia a soughtafter collaborator: she contributed to Fever Ray’s latest LP ‘Plunge’ and Kelela’s ‘Take Me Apart’-remix album.

Olga Pashchenko, one of the world’s most accomplished piano and keyboard virtuosos, will bring a unique take on one of the most famous horror soundtracks of the 20th Century: Der Golem. At Le Guess Who?, Pashchenko will perform a score – comprised of existing composition – created specifically for her by conductor and flutist Jed Wentz. Watching the screen, Pashchenko’s playing will channel the emotions of the actors, as Wentz guides a team of sound artists to bring the film to life... much like its formidable titular creature.
Oorutaichi
Curated by Jenny Hval Oorutaichi takes the word ‘fun’ into hyperdrive. This Japanese producer shakes the rules of techno, electro pop and sampling like a can of soda and lets things fly with contagious enthusiasm and heart. Go ahead and blast tracks like ‘Beshaby’ and ‘Yori Yoyo’ without ricocheting across the room like a hamster on uppers. It ain’t happening. Since his debut album back in 2003, Oorutaichi has scored animated shorts, performed extensively with his band Urichipangoon, and even sampled the legendary Moondog on his track ‘Hamihadarigeri’.

Petbrick The Bandcamp-bio for Petbrick deadpans that it’s just ‘Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura) and Wayne Adams making horrible noises that melt your face’. But press play and you’ll find this particular noise act anything but run-of-the-mill. For better or worse, Petbrick sounds as if you’re at the heart of some tumultuous war zone: this tenacious tandem brings destruction and terror with relentless barrages of blast beats, malformed synth textures and manic vocals.
No S ve atur m day be r9 破地獄/Scattered Purgatory Taiwan duo Scattered Purgatory is named after a Taoist ritual that redeems and releases souls from a state between life and death. As it turns out, they adopt this notion quite literally in both performing and composing, deconstructing unreleased past material and syncing it together with their contemporary work. What that sounds like? A bleeding-edge vernacular that employs the tangents of ambient music, drones, psychedelics and krautrock in both punishing and meditative fashion.

Curated by The Bug Lebanese-born producer and DJ Rabih Beaini (formerly known as Morphosis) specializes in grainy, imaginative analogue techno. A range of influences—improvisational jazz, krautrock, new wave, electronic—seep into his inventive, dark, and emotional productions and resounding live sets. Not many artists skulking within the leftfield electronic world could create music immersive enough for fans of Laraaji, Hieroglyphic Being, Throbbing Gristle and John Zorn to somehow congregate.

Unconventional and hard to categorize, producer/lyricist Quelle Chris is well-versed in several genres, including punk rock, poetry, abstract soul, and experimental hip-hop. As a beatsmith, he tends to favor lo-fi production methods and oddball samples, often creating eerie juxtapositions and contrasts. Armed with his biting sense of humor, Quelle Chris pokes fun at himself while addressing serious personal concerns and social issues.
On Sarah Louise’s latest LP ‘Deeper Woods’, the North Carolina-based artist explores the relationship between the unfamiliar and the accustomed. Her sure-footed dexterity on the 12-string guitar becomes just another textural element swallowed by creeping sound collages and haunting vocals. Furthermore, Louise drew heavily from her own habitat, a house surrounded by a dense forest: one moment the music evokes a place of intimacy and comfort, the next it ambles in the more treacherous and lawless environments.

With her enrapturing deviations of electronic music, R&B, jazz and all-out pop, Sudan Archives – born Brittney Parks – doesn’t just bend the rules, she breaks them. Her innovative take on the violin has drawn similar comparisons to Jimi Hendrix’s mastery of the guitar, reconciling the instruments traditional features with folkloric African styles like no artist before her. Utilizing loops, vocals, and effects, Sudan Archives gives audiences a beguiling and hypnotic glimpse of where pop music could go next.

Ustad Saami is the last living khayál master, widely considered a precursor of qawwali music that originated in Pakistan. That’s no small distinction, as Saami’s voice is able to minutely veer between 49 different notes – seven times the Western scale – to potent, haunting effect. Saami embodies his own pivotal adage ‘to sing is to listen’ quite poetically, as his name translates to ‘to hear’ and his lifelong vocation, kháyal singing, stands for ‘imagination’. Even under threat of islamic fundamentalists, the 75-year old master spent his entire existence as a dedicated practitioner of a vanishing art, one passed on from generation to generation since the 13th century. With this in mind, it’s an extremely rare privilege to have Ustad Saami perform at Le Guess Who?.

As a trio, the group form a maelstrom of ear-splitting racket together, molded into a stylish, streamlined proto-goth act. Undomesticated and effortlessly cool.

75-year old Pakistani musician Ustad Naseeruddin Saami is the last living practitioner of the Surti tradition, dating back to pre-Islamic times. Throughout his life, Saami has tried to keep his multicultural heritage alive, overcoming pressure from the fundamentalists. His sweeping vocal style stems from the 49-note microtonal khayál system which basically amounts seven times the Western scale. Saami interprets his style as an intention to restore ancient pitches to the modern system.

As a master of various styles, Ustad Saami follows the footsteps and principles of Hazrat Amir Khusrau, a Sufi musician, poet and scholar from 13th Century Delhi. Like Khusrau’s poetry, Ustad Saami sings in various languages like Farsi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Arabic and even the ancient language of Vedic. Alongside his sons and nephew, Saami frequently performs thematic tributes to Hazrat Amir Khusrau.

Recorded on a rooftop in the city of Karachi, his first LP ‘God Is Not A Terrorist’ documents and immortalizes a vanishing tradition. The captivating album released by Glitterbeat is produced by Grammy Award winner Ian Brennan, who was contacted by Saami’s students in Pakistan. After this call, it took a full year for Brennan’s journey with Saami to start; but according to Brennan, they had developed a rare chemistry when the two first got together in 2016.

Zia Anger’s My First Film
Curated by Jenny Hval Zia Anger’s short films have premiered at the New York Film Festival and Locarno. She has directed music videos for an impressive roster of artists, including Angel Olsen, Mitski, Beach House, Zola Jesus and Jenny Hval, the latter of whom she has toured and performed with. Under the title ‘My First Film’ Anger will give live commentary on her lost, abandoned, and previously unseen works, including her unreleased first feature, which is based on her own formative life experiences.

When Seydou is invited to promote his new book in Dakar, he returns to his country of origin for the very first time. This prompts Yao to brave the 387 kilometers towards the capital all by himself. The cast of Yao features Omar Sy, Lionel Louis Basse and Fatoumata Diawara.

Asha Puthli’s riveting journey encompasses splendiferous moments of disco, timeless pieces of avant-garde jazz and spaced-out soul, and of course, an utterly flamboyant epiphany. Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Puthli’s interest in fusion started through the Western jazz and pop songs she heard on the radio. She started improvising with jazz bands in India and her singing got highlighted in Ved Mehda’s book ‘Portrait of India’.

Music business veteran Josh Hammond signed her to CBS Records right after he read about Puthli in ‘Portrait of India’. The first record on which she made a mark is Ornette Coleman’s ‘Science Fiction’, featuring on two songs. As a result, she shared the Downbeat Critics’ Poll’s Best Female Vocalist award with Ella Fitzgerald and Dee Dee Bridgewater in 1971.

Puthil’s self-titled debut came out in 1973 and showcased the birth of an international pop star. While her first solo release was built on a feverish R&B feel, follow-ups ventured to funky grooves and disco tunes. Produced and recorded by soul legends Dave Virgin King and Dieter Zimmerman, 1976’s ‘The Devil Is Loose’ became a Euro-soul masterpiece with hit tracks like ‘Flying Fish’ and ‘Space Lady’. The latter became one of the most popular tunes at legendary clubs like Studio 54 and The Loft, not to mention that Puthli even headlined the iconic Studio 54 once.

Throughout this long and versatile journey, Asha Puthli has recorded with a wide range of musicians, from Henry Threadgill to Dum Dum Girls and Bill Laswell, while the list of her admirers includes Debbie Harry, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol. ‘Ground Beneath Her’ from Salman Rushdie was a novel influenced by her life, and in 2009, the British Satellite Earth Station transmitted her tracks in deep space to mark the 40th anniversary of the moon landing.

From singing within the Indian improv-jazz scene to becoming a space disco icon in New York, Puthli’s legacy still expands as we speak. Breaking boundaries at each stage of her career, Asha Puthli’s works have managed to shape and deeply influence everything that comes next. Her upcoming record is a tribute to all the jazz musicians she previously worked with.

Overviewing the impulsive career of Asha Puthli, it’s dizzying how one individual can encapsulate such a ridiculous range of juxtapositions. Puthli’s notoriety really depends on who you ask: her sultry voice adorned Ornette Coleman’s avantjazz masterpiece ‘Science Fiction’, her songs were sampled by hip hop icons like Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z, and her tryst into disco and glam rock, ‘Only the Headaches Remain’, was a chart success in Japan during the early 80’s. Puthli is a true international icon, not to mention one of the first recording artists to successfully merge traditional Indian influences with Western pop. Her myriad talents – which branch all the way into opera, dance and acting – is only matched by a free and restless personality, counting Diana Vreeland, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali among early admirers.
Cate Le Bon Producer and musician Cate Le Bon creates a unique vocabulary of freak folk, post-punk and psych pop. Thanks to her jagged guitar playing and Welsh diction, Le Bon is the definition of elusive. Behind every playful quip, a heartfelt moment of reflection awaits; rigid concepts of beauty and ugliness don’t exist in the work of Cate Le Bon. She is a soul who simply likes to make things without taking limitation into account. Her latest offering ‘Reward’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

Ed Dowie Adrift somewhere in purgatory between Syd Barrett and Robert Wyatt, the immense spacious beauty of Ed Dowie’s debut LP ‘The Uncle Sold’ can’t be overstated enough. Drawing inspiration from the Kazuo Ishiguro novel ‘The Unconsoled’, the former Brothers In Sound stalwart writes and composes with a deep attentiveness, allowing melodies and words to materialize in unhurried, generous fashion. For the patient listener, Dowie’s penchant for orchestral quietude and wry lyricism is a soothing and affirming escapade.

French sound sculptor Félicia Atkinson once curiously speculated that “music always existed, even before humans appeared.” She might be onto something: under her spell, a seemingly random assembly of natural forces, whispered dialogue, and sparse midi electronics becomes a harmonic wellspring, augmenting the beauty of what’s already present. Atkinson’s new album The Flower And The Vessel is partly influenced by the French classical pieces that shaped her childhood, and features a notable guest appearance by Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley.

Grimm Grimm Former Screaming Tea Party-member Koichi Yamanoha was once better known for his scream than his whisper. ‘Hazy Eyes Maybe’, the Japaneseborn, London-based musician’s debut LP under the moniker Grimm Grimm, changed all that with a subdued record of ruminant, nocturnal acid folk. Grimm Grimm artlessly surveys the fabric of shoegaze (Yamanoha co-founded the label Pickpocket records with Kevin Shields in 2014), Shugo Tokumaru, 60s West Coast pop and the melodicism of early Belle & Sebastian.

Holly Herndon: PROTO Curated by Iris van Herpen & Salvador Breed, Moon Duo and Patrick Higgins
Holly Herndon’s vital album ‘PROTO’ is an inquisitive, affirmative work that interplays elements like Sacred Harp choirs with an A.I.-entity called Spawn, therefore splicing the organic and artificial into music that feels immediate, innovative and alive. In doing so, Herndon presents an enriching, hopeful exchange of concepts: technology’s capacity to amplify, manipulate and spread the human voice and humankind’s ability to teach technology to act beyond its rigid binaries.

Group Listening is a joint project by UK-musicians Stephen Black and Paul Jones. Black and Jones met at music college before their respective paths strayed. Reconnecting years later after various endeavors, their shared love for the likes of Moondog, Artie Shaw, Arthur Russell and Brian Eno survived. The duo carefully selects some of their favorite cuts to perform, arrange and reimagine with their instruments of choice, clarinet and piano.

Curated by Fatoumata Diawara Over the past decade, Mali rapper Master Soumy has been a key figure within the West-African nation’s youth movement. Along with his peers, Soumy’s sharpwitted lyrical mastery became the arrow that burst the balloon of Mali’s fractured political and social climate, acquainting younger generations with subject matter like youth migration, education, infrastructure and freedom of religion.
Loving Loving is an experimental pop collaboration between musicians David Parry, Lucas Henderson and Jesse Henderson. Latest release ‘If l am only my thoughts’ marks a newfound appreciation for the generative limitations of recording to tape. The resulting album constructs a warm and dreamy sonic landscape kept adrift by existential lyricism and an unspecified but allencompassing sense of nostalgia.

Kevin Richard Martin & Hatis Noit Curated by The Bug
Japanese artist Hatis Noit’s accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught. Hoit is inspired by everything she can find from Gagaku — Japanese classical music —, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting, to avant-garde and pop vocalists. The meeting of Noit’s bewitching vocal explorations and Kevin Martin (The Bug)’s sacramental synthesis of sound for a world exclusive live performance is sure to lift their respective virtues to perplexing new levels.

Curated by Patrick Higgins Cellist and composer Mariel Roberts plays her instrument of choice like an actor performs a scene, completely engrossed and enraptured within the composition’s totality. As both solo-performer and member of Mivos String Quartet, Wet Ink Ensemble, and Ensemble Signal, Roberts is acclaimed for channeling arresting moods such as claustrophobia and despair with her expressive playing. Her latest outing, 2017’s ‘Cartography,’ sounds like the fictional soundtrack of a suspense-filled thriller.
Michele Mercure Curated by Moon Duo
Michele Mercure’s shrouded cinematic works overlap ambient, abstract, and industrial sensibilities, always with a keen and playful sense of their surroundings and acoustics. Not surprisingly, the sound artist and musician’s work pops up in theater, performance, film, dance and TV animation. As authority in the tape-trading subculture, she recently released ‘Beside Herself’, an anthology of cassettes produced and released independently between 1983 and 1990.

Nivhek
Mo Dj is one of the first artists to successfully integrate Malian music within the electronic mixing spectrum. His journey began as cassette salesman at one of the station roads in Bamako, Mali, moonlighting as a DJ within the city’s nightlife. With just a double tape recorder at his disposal, Moriké Keita is a groove wizard of the highest order, able to produce and mix tracks that match the piercing, infectious intensity of a live band. Once his vibrant remixes caught the ears of Amadou and Mariam’s manager, his singular craft started to spellbind the rest of the world.
Under the name Nivhek, Liz Harris (Grouper) maps richly detailed inner worlds where enigmatic vibrations and voices glide dimly in and out of the void. Double album ‘After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house’ consists of opaque assemblages of Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes, and broken FX pedals. In pacing, palette, and poignancy, these sides rank among Harris’ most stark, primordial work: fragile, feverish, ominous, and otherworldly.

Prison Religion
Prison Religion One famous sci-fi film once sported the tagline ‘in space no one can hear you scream’, but Prison Religion put that hypothesis to the test and then some. This Richmond, Virginia-based collage-rap/noise duo show that the heaviest of music is often-times economical and raw in its execution. The title of their 2018 EP ‘O FUCC IM ON THE WRONG PLANET’ more or less spells it out for you, distorting and pixelating primal anguish until it becomes this loud and frantic cosmic joke.

Roberto SOLO Fonseca Curated by Fatoumata Diawara
Roberto ‘SOLO’ Fonseca still lives in the heart of his birthplace Havana, which explains why his adaptation of Cuba’s musical heritage remains so refreshingly renegade and immediate. He spawned exciting fusion group Temperamento with saxophone maestro Javier Zalba, performed in the legendary Buena Vista Social Club and was handpicked by Herbie Hancock himself as his touring mate. Fonseca’s solo resumé isn’t too shabby either, with influential Afro-Cuban jazz-masterpiece ‘Zamazu’, the Grammy-nominated ‘Yo’ and his live album with Fatoumata Diawara, entitled ‘At Home’.
Sofia Jernberg
The Ex
Like some people collect stamps, Sofia Jernberg collects vocal disciplines. Born in Ethiopia in 1983, the Oslo-based artist mastered myriad styles – from opera singing to pitchless singing – to accommodate just as many creative fields, namely music theaters, visual art, film, orchestral & jazz ensembles. Jernberg reconciles the art of improvisation and composition, both under her own name and as a key member of the incandescent Fire! Collective.
In their four-decade career, The Ex have experimented with countless styles and ideas. They are revered by many of their guitar-wielding peers, notably Sonic Youth, Tortoise, and Steve Albini. But the Dutch punk outfit’s overall M.O. remains singular, as much egalitarian as it is audacious. Stubbornly adventurous, tirelessly independent and unconcerned about how people define them, The Ex’s purview has boldly mushroomed to the outer realms of folk, jazz, improv, and noise.

Tropical Fuck Storm’s wailing backing harmonies sound like a coven chanting hellish incantations, and the filthy percussive thrusts, the otherworldly synth flourishes of the band’s debut LP ‘A Laughing Death In Meatspace’ feel like humanity is cannibalizing itself. In an age of underlying dread, few albums have nailed that queasy feeling of anxiety that permeates life on earth so righteously.
Throughout her chronicle of life, it’s easy to understand how Vivien Goldman earned the title ‘Punk Professor’. In the 70s, Goldman wasn’t simply satisfied standing on the sidelines as a renowned author, journalist, teacher and publicist. She became a vital cog in the movement herself as a recording artist, becoming a key figure in marrying the ethos of punk with the sensibilities of reggae, Afrobeat and Caribbean music. As Yves Jarvis, Jean-Sebastian Audet’s gauzy post-R&B vignettes are driven by color, both as a visual and thematic component. His 2017 album ‘Good Will Come To You’ (released under the moniker Un Blonde) was yellow, the color of the daytime, and Audet’s favorite color. Blue, the color of ‘The Same But By Different Means’, is more dark and suspenseful. Moreover, think of Yves Jarvis as an infinitely more pleasant musical counterpart to Mario Karts Rainbow Road-stage: kaleidoscopic and inviting, yet challenging and treacherous.

Le Guess Who? Education For the third time Le Guess Who? has initated an educational project in collaboration with four different local high schools. 131 pupils delved into the program of Le Guess Who? 2019 during their art classes. The pupils formed duos and chose an artist from this year’s line-up, for whom they designed a new visual product based on the artist’s music, background story and visual output. Together with their finalized works, they were portrayed by photographer Juri Hiensch. The portraits, and the ideas behind the works, are displayed in a special exhibition, located at the first floor of TivoliVredenburg, nearby the Ronda stage. Explore their creative products and views on this year’s artists. Lombok is lively and bustling. The impressive neon-lit mosque, a traditional Dutch mill and a mysteriously beautiful church mark the skyline. Lombok Festival consists of several outdoor and indoor locations, a food market next to the mosque and a line-up focusing mainly on acts inspired by Eastern & African music curated by festival locations & Le Guess Who?. All hosted by and organized with Lombok residents, local non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs and key figures living and working in this neighborhood.
