After enjoying a very mild start to winter, I sit here looking out my window at the white blanket left behind by the Blizzard of 2016. Yes, I think the cold, snowy weather is here in full force and won’t be leaving any time soon. I’ve spent my entire life living in Pennsylvania and enjoying the change of seasons. I always loved being snowed in and hanging out by a warm, crackling fire. The only thing better than that on a cold, winter day, is a cup of hot chocolate and the most recent issue of Lehigh Valley Marketplace. Discovering the Lehigh Valley and all it has to offer is sure to warm you up.

BAR

B ER SHO P

Talk

BY FREDERICK JERANT

Once upon a time, it seemed that practically every neighborhood included a corner store, a cop walking a beat… and a barbershop. Those original man-caves were easy to spot, usually sporting a rotating red-white-and-blue pole out front. Guys could get a good haircut or a hotlather shave (followed by a splash of bay rum), talk sports, smoke a cigar with no complaints, or have a receptive audience for their own gripes about the “little woman.” Unisex salons, the rise of haircutting chains (such as Style America and the formerly Lehigh Valleybased Holiday Hair), and even changing trends in grooming have helped squeeze out many of the old shops. But, much like drive-in movie theaters, oldfashioned “tonsorial parlors” are still around. What’s kept them going for so long?

Doing it right Joe D’Ambrosio, owner of Joe’s barber shop in Easton, has been in the business for over 50 years. He suggested a key reason is personalized attention to each customer. Haircutting chains are noted for concentrating on rapid turnaround, he said, and you might not have the same stylist twice in a row. But a good barber shop will take the time to get to know you and your hair. “We want your haircut to be consistent,” D’Ambrosio said. “That’s why we take the time to find out just what our customers want. ‘How do you like the sides? Do you want a tapered cut? How do you want it tapered? Do you have any trouble spots?’ Then we work to achieve a personalized, consistent haircut. We’re not a speed shop.”

Barber Shop Talk Getting a good cut is partly your own responsibility, too. Asking for “a little off the top” or simply saying “Don’t make it too short” is too broad, too vague. (In the same way, exactly how big is a “medium” potato?) Instead, offer precise instructions – a half-inch off the top, or #6 clippers on the top, with #2 on the sides. Unsure? A good barber will gladly cut only a little bit at a time until you say, “That’s it!” The shops tend to maintain a broad-based clientele, as well. After all, everyone will need a haircut sooner or later. Rose Moyer, co-owner of Jimmy’s barber shop in Allentown, said, “We have two shops – the original one in west Allentown, the other in center city. The downtown shop has a more urban, more industrial vibe, while the West End shop is sort of a haven for the people in our neighborhood. But both of them welcome everybody.” D’Ambrosio agreed. “I see just about everybody coming into my shop – from the mayor, the Northampton County district attorney, judge, doctor and executives, to the high school football coach, janitors, teachers, full-time workers and retirees,” he said.

No foo-foo here At Jimmy’s, “It’s a guy’s place. We don’t set appointments, you just walk in. And if you need to wait a few minutes, you can read the paper, have some coffee, and even get your shoes shined. That used to be a common service, but you don’t see it much anymore,” he said.

“I might offer them a bit of free beer or Scotch whisky, play some jazz in the background, just give them a chance to get away from the office for a while.”

Ronald Corales, owner of Gentlemen’s Barbershop in Easton creates a little oasis, “Just come in, sit down and relax. I might offer them a bit of free beer or Scotch whisky, play some jazz in the background, just give them a chance to get away from the office for a while,” he said. While barbershop talk can be free-wheeling, sometimes it’s good to draw a few lines. Religion and politics are two topics that can quickly heat up what began as a friendly conversation, but D’Ambrosio takes it a step further: he avoids workrelated topics. “If my customer is a doctor, I stay away from medical matters. If I’m working on a lawyer, there’s no legal talk. I want my shop to be a place where they can get away from that stuff for a while,” he said.

Barber Shop Talk Services Don’t presume that an old-school barber can achieve only the Don Draper look. Today’s barbers are trained to provide a wide range of classic and contemporary styles. All of the shop owners I talked to said they offer both clipper- and scissors-cuts. Generally, clippers are great for making hair a uniform length; because they’re adjustable, you’re able to choose the length (or lengths) you want. And they’re the tool-of-choice for the popular “fade” cuts, as well as for cutting decorative lines. Scissors allow shaping, resulting in a more-natural look. D’Ambrosio also offers razor cuts, particularly on long hair, to impart special looks.

Why do barber poles have red-white-and-blue stripes? Long, long ago, barbers didn’t just cut hair and give shaves. No, they were known as barber-surgeons, and actually carried out bloodletting procedures (once thought to be a cure-all for everything from sore throats to plague), tooth extractions, setting bones and treating wounds. According to legend, the red stripe represents bloodletting, and the white stripe represents medical bandages that were applied after such a procedure. The pole itself is said to symbolize the stick those poor patients squeezed to improve blood flow. The blue stripe? That seems to be an American addition. One school of thought is that it represents human veins (and red, the arteries); another suggests that it was added simply to echo the colors of the American flag.

12 FEBRUARY 2016

Straight-razor shaves are gaining popularity; an article on “The Art of Manliness” website sums it up: it’s relaxing; it’s manly (Of course! Women don’t use straight razors!); and it’s a bit dangerous – after all, your barber is gliding a potential lethal weapon right against your neck… And if your daily ritual is limited to a few quick swipes with a drugstore blade, a barbershop shave can be a real treat. Corales walked me through one of his typical hot shaves. “After getting my customer settled into the chair, I rub in some pre-shave oil, going with and against the grain of the whiskers; it lubricates the skin and helps to open the pores. I then apply hot lather with a badger brush and apply a hot towel while I prepare my tools,” he said.

Don’t freeze this winter!

In an earlier time, that would have included stropping the blade – whisking it along a leather strap to improve the razor’s edge. But today’s health codes require the use of disposable straight razors, he explained. “Next, I apply more hot lather to his face and shave with the grain; then I repeat those steps, but going against the grain. That’s followed by a cold towel to close the pores, a splash of after-shave lotion or shaving balm, and we’re done,” he concluded. And that is an experience you can’t get at a chain shop!

Porters' Pub 700 NORTHAMPTON STREET I EASTON I 610.250.6561 I PORTERSPUBEASTON.COM WRITTEN BY CATHY KILEY I PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN HULVAT

Porters’ Pub has been a cornerstone of Easton’s dining scene for 25 years and remains a go-to eatery for those seeking a dose of comfort food, great beer and spirits with friendly service as an added plus. It truly is a place where everyone seems to know your name; but if they don’t, they will before you leave. Tom and I stopped in for lunch after shopping downtown and were happy to be joined by Larry Porter, one of three Porter brothers (along with Ken and Jeff ) who together own and operate the pub. Officially known as Porters’ Publick House, the brothers purchased a run-down old “shot and beer” joint on the corner of 7th and Northampton Streets in 1988 and after two years of extensive renovations, opened on May 16, 1990. Larry says it was a long up-hill climb but after a few years, Porters’ endeared itself to Eastonians as an old world pub in which to “Eat, Drink and be Merry.”

Porters' Pub Speaking of eating and drinking, Tom ordered a Guinness and I sipped a Diet Pepsi while we shared a wonderful Arugula Portobello Salad consisting of Balsamic grilled Portobello atop crisp arugula and covered with crumbled bleu cheese, toasted pecans and dried cherries with a light sherry vinaigrette. It was a delicious luncheon salad and a great starter. Four other salads are on the menu including a Fiesta Salad of fresh greens with black beans, feta, artichoke, red peppers, cucumber and red onion with vinaigrette. There’s a choice of dressings and a fresh salad may be added to any sandwich or entree choice for a small up-charge.

It truly is a place where everyone seems to know your name; but if they don’t, they will before you leave. The large appetizer menu includes familiar favorites like wings, nachos and dips in addition to house specialties such as savory Drunken Littleneck Clams in a garlicky shallot beer broth; Duck Bacon Sausage over arugula and sundried tomato cous cous with a Guinness demi-glace in addition to a Mediterranean Plate of hummus, prosciutto, kalamata olives, artichokes and peppers. Any of these plates are perfect for starters or for sharing. We also tasted the chili which was served to the table very hot as it should be. It was rich, delicious and held a hefty dash of zip! We loved it.

While we were waiting for our sandwiches to arrive, Larry Porter described the massive amount of renovations. The building dates back to 1833. The exterior was taken down to the original clapboard after removing layers of aluminum and vinyl siding. However, that siding had to be replaced with new cedar board although great pains were taken to restore the facade to its original appearance. The mahogany bar and all of the woodwork were built and installed by the brothers. The original brick and stone walls were uncovered after decades of being buried under layers and layers of wood, drywall and other “stuff ” and the wall was taken down between the bar and dining areas to open up the pub. Hovering above, suspended from the ceilings of both the bar and dining room, are 4500+ pewter mugs for those members of Porters’ Mug Club adding unique warmth and character.

Tom ordered a Pub Cheesesteak – grilled beef with mushrooms and onions topped with steak sauce and provolone. It was huge and delicious. Tom said he would never finish it… but he did. I ordered an “Odd Oddsen” sandwich. This creation of turkey, provolone, Russian dressing and coleslaw on ciabatta bread was named for a great friend of the brothers and was a tasty combo. I took home half of the sandwich, which was just as good the following day when I warmed it up for lunch. The Porter Brothers strive to use ingredients from local purveyors that are delivered daily whenever possible and everything but a couple of desserts and bread is made in house. There are no fryers at Porters’ Pub so

Porters' Pub although you are able to enjoy wings that are baked, French fries are not to be found. Larry takes pride in the fact that their menu consists of healthier food and I think that’s good! Dinner is served after 5 p.m. in addition to Pub Fare. Dinner entrees include a Fresh Vegetarian Stir Fry; Scottish Salmon; 7th Street Jambalaya and Tex Mex Pot Roast. There are nine Vegetarian and 15 gluten-free choices on the menu. Details about these and all entrees are available on their website.

Chef Derek Chimel sends out big tastes from his small and humble kitchen. Derek is a Jersey Boy and studied in the culinary program at Atlantic County Community College. He has been at the pub for two years after spending time in various areas of the food service business. There are about 150 Beers available at Porters’ Pub, 12 of which are on tap. In addition, there is an extensive selection of aged single malt Scotches, Bourbons and Whiskeys. Enrollment in Porters’ Pub Mug Club is free and after you taste a number of selected beers, you become eligible to join the other 4500+ members in what I would consider a very fun group of revelers. We enjoyed freshly brewed Porters’ Publick House Blend coffee, which is produced locally at Jeff Porter’s coffee roasting business. I also tried the housemade Tiramisu, which truly is one of the best Tiramisu desserts I’ve had in the Valley. This dessert was light and scrumptious despite all the rich ingredients and was soaked in liquor. It was very decadent and I loved it. Porters’ Pub is not a big place but is chock-a-block with good times and great people. They strive to maintain their old world pub feel with fun food and drink to satisfy their friendly clientele. Porters’ Pub opens at 11 a.m. daily. There is on-street parking along both Northampton and 7th Streets. A GU IDE TO

Beer-ware W HAT’S I N A B E E R G L AS S ? Beer would be the obvious answer, however, it’s important to know that it’s much more than just a glass that holds your beer. As soon as the beer hits the glass, its color, aroma and taste is altered, your anticipation is heightened. Hidden nuances, become more pronounced, colors shimmer, and the enjoyment of the beer simply becomes a better, more complete, experience.

WH Y ? Well, according to Beer Advocate, scientific studies show that the shape of a beer glass affects the formation and retention of foam head, and in turn affects the aroma of your drink. While some glassware is designed specifically to help preserve the foam head of your beer, others are designed to help enhance the colors of your brew. The type of glass you use has the ability to make or break your overall experience. Follow this guide to learn more.

MUG The main characteristic of the beer mug is its wide cylindrical shape with a handle on the side which makes for easy drinking. It allows for plenty of volume, and the handle helps prevent your hands from inadvertently warming up your beer. A tankard mug has a thick bottom and straight sides, and the stouter krug mug is curved with a dimpled surface.

PILSNER This type of beer glass is tall and skinny. The slender design allows beer drinkers to appreciate the colors and carbonation bubbles within their beer. The slightly wider top of the glass also helps retain the foam head, and bring out its true flavor profile and aromas.

Your Glass:

SNIFT ER Snifter glasses are usually used for tasting cognac and brandy, but many people don’t realize that they are also great at enriching the aromatics of beer. The unique shape of the glass allows you to swirl your beer around, stirring up the volatiles which helps bring out the full aroma of your brew. Despite how much it can hold, you may not want to fill it up to the rim because it will stop you from enjoying the full experience.

Mistakes TO AVO I D WRITTEN BY ANDY COOK

Our homes are typically our single largest purchase and investment. Given that, it’s critical when considering doing work to renovate or remodel your home, you avoid some common mistakes that often occur. If you take even a few of these to heart, it could save you stress, time, and even money. Chuck Hamilton, executive officer, Lehigh Valley Builders Association, had a couple of great tips to share.

If you take even a few of these to heart, it could save you stress, time, and even money. 1. Use a licensed contractor One who is licensed through the Home Improvement Contractor Registration. Licensing, which has been in place since 2009, is done through the Attorney General’s office in Harrisburg. “If a contractor is licensed, that means they have to comply with requirements including having insurance, being financially stable, and using a standard con-

For now tract, which all weigh in the consumer’s favor,” Hamilton said. You’ll be able to identify a licensed contractor as they promote their license on their advertising and vehicles (PA license #). If you’re looking for a licensed person or company, use the state’s website: hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov for information.

2. Watch for lead paint

For the journey ahead.

If your home was built prior to 1978, it may contain lead paint. There are rules through the Environmental Protection Agency on how to deal with this, as there are potential health risks. Lead paint should only be removed by certified people, as there is a process to do it safely. Hamilton says, “Ask your contractor if they are certified to work on homes built before 1978.” Be aware, there is added expense to do this properly; if you are comparing bids and one is significantly lower than the others, you may want to investigate as to how lead paint will be addressed. For more information, check the EPA website at. epa.gov/lead.

Susan Bella Jewelry LLC

3. Call those references You shouldn’t feel awkward asking for references; most contractors are happy to provide names and numbers of happy customers. Here’s the thing: most people don’t actually follow up and make the calls! You’re making a significant investment in your home, so do the legwork and call. Ask questions about promptness, tidiness, if the job done within time and budget, and other issues you’re wondering about. If you’re using someone who’s been referred to you through friends, even better – you can check out the workmanship first-hand.

Experience Makes a Difference. Comprehensive skilled nursing and rehabilitation services

4. Get a written contract

It should include the start date, estimated completion date, details as to exactly what is going to be done (and in some cases, not done), pricing, and more. It should take into account potential weather issues (rain, snow) if exterior work is being done. It will detail the quality of materials, number of coats of paint and primer, and if work will be subcontracted to other people or companies. Also, if you make changes to the contract, be sure to get them in writing (called ‘change orders’) along with the cost. If this is unfamiliar territory, don’t be pressured into signing anything without having an attorney or trusted friend review any paperwork before you sign.

5. Take your time If you have to pick paint colors, tile, carpet, finishes, cabinetry, faucets, or even just one of those things, don’t wait until the last minute! You’re going to be living with these decisions for the next 5-10 years or more, so this is time well spent. Now is when you pull out your file folder of dream house items (or online Pinterest board or other websites). Also, some items may need to be ordered (such as specialty tile), and that could delay the project at your expense.

Remodeling

6. Be prepared for the unexpected Ask your contractor where they foresee plans might be impacted. What experience do they have? If you’ve watched practically any HGTV remodeling show, you’ve seen this happen: a wall is opened up, and unexpected issues arise (old wiring, mold, or major systems need updating) which take time and money to

address. Also, don’t forget about the impact and disruption a remodeling job will have on you and your family. If you are redoing your kitchen, do you have a plan for a temporary kitchen? What about meals for the family? Are comfortable are you with sawdust and mess?

talk to one of our hearth experts!

7. Not having a (realistic) budget This is another favorite from the HGTV and DIY network programs: folks who think an entire house including a kitchen and 2 bathrooms can be totally ripped out and overhauled with high-end materials for $20,000. This might be correct if you were doing the work yourself (so it’s only the materials cost), however it’s the highly-skilled and licensed labor and experience you’re paying for. Do your research so you can properly assess estimates. Talk to friends who have had projects done, and check online sources for cost estimates based on geographic area. You know your finances best, so make a budget and stick to it, and make smart decisions in the process.

One final mistake to avoid Don’t over improve to the extent you’ve made your home the most expensive on the block, unless this is your ‘forever’ home or one you’ll be in for more than 10 years. Otherwise, you’re highly unlikely to get your return on the investment. If you’re remodeling in order to sell your home within 2-5 years, you may want to consult a realtor to find out what updates are most important to buyers (e.g. updated bathrooms, media room, walk-in closets, etc.) in your area.

The rules for claiming benefits can be complex so Lehigh Valley Marketplace caught up with Paul Stocker, CPA, CAS, NSSA, of Social Security and Retirement Planning to help wade through the details.

Lehigh Valley Marketplace (LVM): How does Social Security play a role in Retirement Planning? Paul Stocker (PS): For about 1/3 of people already on Social Security it represents 90% of their entire retirement income, and for more than ½, it represents at least 60% of their entire retirement income.

LVM: So, there is planning involved with receiving Social Security Benefits? PS: There should be, but in reality there is nowhere enough of it. A lot of people think that they are going to collect as early as they are able to, which is the age of 62. For people born before 1955, Full Retirement Age (FRA) is age 66. Collecting at age 62, reduces their benefit by 25%. If a person has a Primary

26 FEBRUARY 2016

Insurance Amount (PIA) of $2,000 a month at FRA, they would only receive $1,500 a month if they start collecting at 62.

LVM: Do you have to collect Social Security Benefits at age 66? PS: Actually, for every year you defer taking Social Security up until the age of 70, your PIA increases 8% for each year you defer, up to 32%. This would make the Benefit at age 70, $2,640 a month instead of $2,000 at age 66.

LVM: So, why do some people start collecting at age 66? PS: Actually there are some major questions to ask to determine what is the best date is to retire. If you stop working at FRA, what income will you live on until you reach age 70? Life expectancy is also a major factor in the determination process. If your entire family lineage has a history of not living past the age of 72, delaying may not be the best choice.

LVM: OK, maybe it’s not as cutand-dry as it seems. PS: If you add the increases in benefits from the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs), it makes the discrepancy even worse. If you really want to complicate matters, you should see what happens when you throw married couples into the mix.

LVM: How do married couples make Social Security Planning so complicated? PS: Not only do you have the question of what age to retire at, currently you also have what is called 2 different “Switching Strategies” that they can use. These strategies are called “File and Suspend” and “Restricted Application.” One very fine point to remember is that you must be Full Retirement Age to use either one of these strategies.

LEHIGHVALLEYMARKETPLACE.COM

27

Social Security LVM: What is File and Suspend? PS: If you have a spouse that is entitled to Spousal Benefits, you must sign up for your benefits for your spouse to be able to collect their spousal benefit. If you “File and Suspend”, you suspend your collection of benefits and can receive the 8% increase in deferred credits for 4 years, and you allow your spouse to collect their spousal benefit.

LVM: Can an individual use “File and Suspend?” PS: Currently they can. If an individual “File and Suspends”, it will start the deferred credit process of 8% per year. If they didn’t “File and Suspend”, they would still get the deferred credits when they actually file for benefits. So why should a single person “File and Suspend”? Let’s say they find out at the age of 69 and ½, that they have a terminal disease. If they “Filed and Suspended” they can go back to Social Security and ask for all their benefits back to FRA as a lump sum since they won’t need the deferred credits in the future. But they can do this only until they reach age 70, at which time this strategy goes away.

LVM: How is the “Restricted Application” different? PS: When you file for benefits, you are “deemed” to be filing for all the benefits that you are entitled to. If a wife’s individual benefit is less than her spousal benefit, she would receive her individual benefit plus the difference between that number and the spousal benefit. With a “Restricted Application” she is saying that she just wants to collect her spousal benefit only. She is restricting her benefit just to the spousal benefit. This allows her individual benefit to receive the 8% a year in deferred credits on her individual benefit. At age 70, she switches from a spousal benefit to her own benefit with 32% more in individual benefits.

LVM: How much of a difference can these two strategies actually make? PS: Depending upon the 2 PIAs, age difference between spouses, and life expectancy, we have seen over a $360,000 lifetime difference between starting to collect at the earliest age of 62 and employing a combination of these two strategies.

LVM: Really? That much? PS: It is not uncommon to see at least $200,000 if the age difference and PIA difference are not that great. When we do a retirement plan, we usually present what the plan looks like maximizing Social Security Benefits. Coupled with COLAs and deferred credits, it can make the difference of running out of income or not during their lifetime.

LVM: Do future retirees know about these two strategies? PS: There has been an increase in the general public awareness of these strategies. Unfortunately, the Budget Act that was passed in the beginning of November 2015 has changed the future uses of these two claiming strategies.

LVM: Changed them how? PS: Effective April 30, 2016, “File and Suspend” as a strategy is basically gone. You will still be able to “File and Suspend,” but when you suspend your benefits, you will also suspend any benefits that are associated with yours. That means that any spousal or children benefits would be suspended also. A single person who “Files and Suspends” now, will only be able to go back six months to collect back benefits instead of all the way back to age 66.

28 FEBRUARY 2016

WILL YOU RUN OUT OF MONEY IN YOUR LIFETIME? LVM: And Restricted Application? PS: Any person who turns 62 before January 1, 2016, will be able to file for a Restricted Application if they so choose when they turn Full Retirement Age. Any one turning 62 after December 31 of 2015 will not be able to file a Restricted Application.

LVM: What do you think this change could cost future retirees in benefits? PS: Initial illustrations come in on an average between $100,000 and $150,000 less during a couples’ life expectancy.

LVM: What options do future retirees have? PS: It is very important that anyone that turns 66 before April 30, 2016 find out what effect the new law may have on them. Over their expected life expectancy, the amount could be substantial.

LVM: Are there any changes in the new law that effect non-couples? PS: If there is any good news out of the new law, it is that it does not affect spousal, widow(er) or ex-spousal benefits. So ex-spouses that were married for at least ten years can still collect under their ex’s account, and widows(ers), can still start to collect as early as the age of 60.

LOCAL COLOR

Max Meano WRITTEN BY FREDERICK JERANT PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN HULVAT

The English language is filled with apparent contradictions – phrases such as “alone in a crowd,” “jumbo shrimp,” “open secret” and (thanks to George Carlin) “military intelligence.” Until recently, I would have included “graffiti artist” on that list – until I had a chance to talk with Max Meano, who specializes in that genre. Max’s medium of expression is spray paint, but that’s where his similarity to typical “taggers” ends. Rather than randomly spraying colors on any flat surface he can find, he executes complex, largescale productions in locations along the East Coast. As a child, Max was attracted to the graphic arts; in high school, music took over. “I was still doing some art stuff,” he said, “but I was more interested in elements of hip-hop – producing and engineering in a studio.” In fact, he graduated from Northampton Community College’s radio/TV program, and then moved to Manhattan to study audio engineering at Mercy College. “I graduated at the bottom of the recession,” he said, and found himself moving back to the Valley. Although he was still involved in the local music scene, his interest in it began to fade – along with the economy, the quality of talent had dropped.

Max Meano While recuperating at home from a work-related injury, Max turned to his long-neglected graphics background to help pass the time. “Much of my early life had involved drawing and sketching, so I combined that with my interest in graffiti. While I was laid up, I spent hours sketching and painting. It’s been pretty much non-stop since then,” he said.

Technique is everything Max is basically a self-taught artist who uses a variety of techniques to plan and execute his eye-grabbing conceptions (in other words, he doesn’t just grab a can of paint and let loose). Typically, his preliminary designs take shape the old-fashioned way – freehand, on paper. But for larger productions, he often uses computer-based imaging software to create a digital version of the proposed piece. And when it’s time to get down to business, he uses can after can of artist-quality spray paint – you didn’t think he relied just on stuff from the hardware store, did you? – “which means it’s loaded with pigment and gives me good coverage,” he said. A project might require a mix of aerosol, acrylic, paint markers and other media. He also knows his way around scaffolding, scissor lifts, boom lifts and OSHA regulations. Much of his work is very precise. “When I do letters, I can make them seem like 3-D, add drop shadows, highlights and other effects. I also use different tips on the sprayers to make fat or thin lines, or different shapes.” (Think of the tips used on a piping bag, and you’ll have the basic idea.)

But there’s still room for improvisation. Max has also simply splashed paint for a particular effect, and even “stabbed” cans of paint and applied the gushing streams of color by moving the can in various directions. “There are many tools to use,” he said, “you just have to figure out which ones will work best.”

Local projects The south side of Bethlehem is home to one of Max’s original works – a custom mural on the 162-foot brick wall that runs along W. Third Street, just in front of Comfort Suites.

230 NORTHAMPTON ST • DOWNTOWN EASTON, PA 610-829-1000 • EastonOutdoorCompany.com

Meano was speaking and painting as part of a hip-hop program at Lehigh University last year when he was approached by a student who eventually commissioned him to design and paint the mural. Environmental engineering major Courtney Thier had learned that pedestrians dislike blank walls that are over 30 feet long – so she developed a plan to liven that stretch of brick. Large metal letters would spell out “Welcome to the South Side,” and Max’s painted imagery would fill the bodies of the letters. (Because the wall is the last remnant of the historic BrownBorhek lumber company, Max was prohibited from painting on the wall itself.) The approved design includes images of iconic South Side buildings – Bethlehem Steel, the Banana Factory, the Star of Bethlehem, the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, the city’s Skateplaza – even the old Brown-Borhek planing mill. Those buildings have special meaning for him; Max is a native of south Bethlehem. Other local venues have been the Banana Factory (live painting, an annual street art festival and a TED Talk event) and the Allentown Art Museum (live painting for a Robert Indiana exhibit). But he’s dealt with controversy as well. Max was hired by Amman Jesani (via the Alternative Gallery), a co-owner of Dell Motors in east Allentown, to paint an otherwise blank 1,000-square-foot wall of his building.

36 FEBRUARY 2016

“He’s a big fan of Japanimation [another term for anime, a popular and highly stylized cartooning style], so I designed the mural using those kinds of characters,” Max said. The mural also featured huge wrenches and an anthropomorphic car engine that sported eyes and teeth. Although the owner was delighted with the outcome, it wasn’t long before neighboring businesses and residents complained – imagining the presence of gang-related symbols, or fearing that the artwork would reflect poorly on the area.

Far and wide Word of Max’s skills has spread far beyond the confines of the Lehigh Valley. He was recently invited to paint by the Bushwick Collective, an outdoor street-art gallery in Brooklyn that hosts artists from around the globe. The 1,000-square-foot mural is Max’s largest solo project to date. He’s also painted for Beats, Rhymes and Relief, a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D. C., that uses the arts to raise awareness and support for worldwide humanitarian relief efforts.

He’s a resident artist at the Alternative Gallery, where you’ll find him painting mural, assisting with various gallery projects, and helping out with programs that focus on disadvantaged kids. He’s quite active with Allentown’s ArtsFest, for which he’s the “graffiti jam” curator – developing the roster of artists, organizing and executing the event, and participating in it himself. Leap Year PU TS FE B R U ARY 29 BACK O N T H E C AL E N DAR WRITTEN BY KATHRYN D’IMPERIO

Every four years, February 29 makes its return to help us harmonize our calendar with the solar calendar. This added day allows our calendar to synchronize with the Earth’s revolution around the sun, a process that takes around 365¼ days, or more specifically, 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. Without leap year, our Gregorian calendar would be off by around six hours every year, thus making up a full day every four years.

In Ireland and Britain, women may propose to their significant others only during leap years.

38 FEBRUARY 2016

Even though leap years come around only once every four years, they are fascinating to many people. Keep reading for some fun and interesting facts about leap year.

Leap Year History Leap year began under the rule of Julius Caesar in the Roman Empire more than 2000 years ago. Initially, any year divisible by four was deemed a leap year, but eventually, the Gregorian calendar corrected the introduction of too many leap years. The Gregorian calendar requires three criteria in determining a leap year: • Leap years are evenly divisible by 4. • If the year is divisible by 100, it is not a leap year unless – • The year is also divisible by 400. • For example, the year 2000 was a leap year and 2400 will be, but 2100, 2200, and 2300 will not be Leap years.

Leap Year Birthdays For many people, leap year doesn’t truly impact our day-to-day life. The intercalary day may cause the day of the week for holidays like Christmas or our birthdays to shift by a day in that particular year, for example, pushing the date out to Sunday instead of Saturday as it may fall in a typical year. Where things get interesting is in cases of people born on February 29, also known as leap day.

40 FEBRUARY 2016

Most of us have creatively envisioned the fun it would be to have a leap day birthday. Would we celebrate on February 28 or on March 1? Perhaps both. And what fun it would be as our friends and family members celebrate birthdays as they get older, with us coyly being able to claim only a quarter of our age. It’s fun to imagine having a birthday on leap day.

• If you were born on February 29, you may be called a “leapling,” “leaper,” or a “leap-year baby.” • Some 200,000 Americans are said to be leap-year babies, with around 5 million estimated worldwide. • According to the law of averages, a person’s chance of being born on leap day is said to be 1 out of 1,461 (four years at 365 days apiece plus 1 leap day). • Birth certificates and many government agencies recognize February 29 as an accepted birth date. • Some companies may not support February 29 as an actual date, forcing leaplings to choose between February 28 and March 1. • The town of Anthony, TX and the town of Anthony, NM share a state border as well as the joy of hosting The Worldwide Leap year Festival and Leap Day Birthday Party, which this year will run from Thursday, February 25 through Monday, February 29. (For more information, see facebook.com/leapyearcapital.)

Things to Do on Leap Year Day The novelty of celebrating February 29 only once every four years can fuel our desire to do something special when leap year finally does arrive. Here are some ideas of things you can do on leap day or simply during leap year. • Host a party with a leap year theme; perhaps a playful frogs theme for kids or a fun Quantum Leap theme for adults. • Honor the tradition or just make it a special day and propose! • Create a leap year time capsule with your family, including a few photos and a list of everyone’s favorites at this current moment. Plan to dig up the time capsule and do it over again in another four years. • If you have young kids, teach them to play Leap Frog or do a frogthemed arts and crafts project. • If you or someone you know wants to celebrate in grand style, make the trip for The Worldwide Leap year Festival and Leap Day Birthday Party in Anthony, TX and Anthony, NM. • If you want to stay closer to home, say, on your couch, plan to watch the romance comedy flick, Leap Year, featuring Amy Adams, Adam Scott, and Matthew Goode. Adams’ character plans to propose to her boyfriend inspired by Irish tradition. No matter what you decide to do, enjoy something special and memorable with the ones you love on leap day. And even if you don’t do something exciting or out of the ordinary, don’t worry. You’ll get another chance in 2020.

Party Don’t let a little rain ruin your plans.

Beginning Over MAKING A DIFFERENCE

WRITTEN BY CEZANNE COLVIN I PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN HULVAT

Bruises a little too dark to be masked by concealer, threats of PFA filings, police visits commanded by concerned neighbors, and the occasional empowering Blockbuster movie or chart-topping pop single are what we picture when we hear the words “domestic violence.” What we do not picture is a woman surrendering the contents of her paycheck to her abuser every week, effectively building a prison from which she cannot afford to escape. We do not picture it because we cannot fully fathom it, and yet, more than 18,000 women have been murdered by their intimate partners in the United States since 2003. On a spring day in 2005, Heidi Markow received that call – the one that informed her that her brother-in-law had shot and killed her sister Robin. Instead of succumbing to grief from the horrific loss of life, Heidi pledged to make a difference in the lives of survivors of domestic violence and

For mothers who manage to leave their abusive situations, another hurdle awaits them – gaining custody of their children. “Over seventy percent of the time in child custody cases where domestic violence is involved, the courts hand over sole custody to the abuser,” Heidi says, explaining that these women are at an enormous disadvantage in the judicial process. Not only do they often appear unrepresented in court because their spouses control all of the money, but their abusive partners paint their trauma and stress symptoms as mental illnesses. Heidi, who currently helps women navigate the court process, is actively seeking attorneys who will represent survivors of domestic violence in court custody cases at reduced rates or as pro-bono. Heidi also owns a beauty salon in Easton, Purple, which provides free services to survivors of domestic violence in order to prepare them for court appearances and job interviews so that they are able to “look and feel their best,” she says. “When you’re a survivor of domestic violence, going on a job interview is the first step of rebuilding your life.” While Heidi assists women in rebuilding their families, identities, and lives, that is merely a peak at Beginning Over’s expansive work. Then there are women like Robin, whose lives are ended before they can leave their situations, and whose children are suddenly left without a mother and father – the fathers either commit suicide or are incarcerated – for life. “Again, it’s important to look beyond domestic violence,” Heidi says. “We need to recognize the permanency of homicide. This isn’t a revolving door – when children lose a parent, they need support for five, ten, fifteen years after the homicide occurs. The

story might be in the news for a minute before [it is forgotten], but it doesn’t ever end for these families.” Although some people might still dismiss domestic violence as a private family issue, the staggering statistics suggest that this epidemic should instead concern the entire community. “Between 2001 and 2012, there were more women killed by their intimate partners than troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Heidi says. “We estimate that 26,000 children in the United States are left without their mothers because of domestic homicide, and it’s my mission to find these children and these families.”

Beginning Over offers camps and retreats for these children and families where they take part in activities ranging from hiking to relaxing massages, as well as peer-topeer counseling. “We’re not learning counseling from a book or a Power Point presentation,” Heidi says. “We have a connection and feeling of unity, and that’s why we’re so successful.” The organization also aims to alleviate burial and funeral costs for families who have lost a sister or a daughter to domestic homicide. Beyond the dollar signs and decimal points, a parent or sibling opening her credit card statement every month and realizing that she is still paying for her daughter or sister’s murder is too heartbreaking of a thought to bear. “It is so important for me to be able to say to these families, go ahead and grieve,” Heidi says. “Go ahead and mourn. We have this. We got you.”

Heidi says that her ultimate goal is to one day unite the tens of thousands of families across the United States who have been affected by domestic violence. “When we have all of these families and children together, we are like one big family,” she says. “You don’t even need to talk about it. You just know that this person understands.” More than that, she hopes Beginning Over will eventually expand to include a residential treatment facility designed specifically for children of domestic homicide, which would be the first of its kind. She envisions the facility to offer 30day programs with on-site professionals to help children heal and eventually thrive, as well as the chance to bond with other children who have also lost their mothers and families to domestic homicide.

Bushkill BECAUSE YOU LIVE HERE

TOWNSHIP

WRITTEN BY KATHLEEN MORY PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICHOLAS A. TONELLI

46 FEBRUARY 2016

On August 13, 1813, Bushkill Township officially was born. The 26-square mile township is located in northcentral Northampton County and is surrounded by Plainfield Township and Blue Mountain, along with the Appalachian Trail bordering the summit of Blue Mountain. Before its formation, this land was a part of the composition of Plainfield Township and early settlement in the area can be traced back to as early as 1742. Today, Bushkill Township has approximately 8,200 residents that call “the Plains” their home, according to the 2010 census.

provides landowners with options to the sale of their property. Instead of selling to simply meet financial goals, landowners that meet the criteria of the Bushkill Township Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) can choose the best solution for their individual needs. learn more about the Open Space program, you can visit bushkilltownship. com/openspace.html.

The area has always been dedicated to serving and preserving the community. The majority of the early settlers were German farmers who had mostly log houses and livestock barns. The use of natural resources has been an integral part of the development of the area. Bushkill Creek, in fact, was one of the main power resources for mills in the area. Sobers Run, which is located solely in Bushkill Township, provided water supply to farms and mills of the area. What began as mostly an agricultural community flourished into residential community that still is strongly rooted as a historically rural area. The community has expanded and funded its own Open Space program since 2007. Thanks to this program, over 1,000 acres of farmland has been preserved. Bushkill Township is committed to the continued development of their growing community while still conserving the natural beauty and resources. The Open Space program

While they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, Beck’s is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Things to Do This type of dedication to the land has given residents the opportunity to utilize it in unique ways. The 18acre Fehr Farm has an Equine Sensory Trail, which the Equi-librium project uses for their program. The trail provides a different therapeutic approach to both children and adults with special needs such as autism and cerebral palsy, stroke symptoms, multiple sclerosis and social, emotional or behavioral challenges like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants in Equi-librium benefit from the stimulation by having to use all of their five senses along the way, actively engaging them along the way. To learn more about the Equi-librium program, visit equi-librium.org. Another scenic staple of Bushkill Township is the Jacobsburg State Park. This park features the Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. The center provides recreational programs for all ages. All 1,168 acres are available to the public to appeal to all of their residents’ interests. From historic education and picnicking to cross country skiing and hunting, residents of Bushkill Township are able to enjoy Jacobsburg State Park throughout all four seasons. A

deep history is also embedded in this center. At one point, the Henry Rifle which was famous for being the weapon of choice at Little Big Horn, was made on premise. The Jacobsburg National Historic District, which is almost entirely based on the center, educates visitors on the manufactory of colonial guns. For more information on the park and the events held by the Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center can be found at dcnr. state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/jacobsburg/index.htm. The inhabitants of Bushkill Township are always looking for ways to give back to the place they call ‘home.’ This is why the Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company holds an annual carnival, which is held on the fire company’s grounds. The carnival is four days of rides, food, fun and includes a silent auction. Many businesses and organizations across the Lehigh Valley participate every year to give the event a distinctive community-driven feel and representation. Last year, Pink Heals – Lehigh Valley Chapter (which is a non-profit that provides support and comfort to women battling all types of cancer) had Sally, their signature pink truck, make an appearance. The fundraising benefits go to right back into helping support the first responders and fire companies of the area. You can learn more about the Annual Carnival at bushkilltownshipfireco.com/annual-carnival.html. Bushkill Township thrives through its commitment to its history and community members. Today, Bushkill Township is known as a great place to live and raise a family.

ELECT RIC SU PPLY CO. WRITTEN BY MARY BETH SCHWARTZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN HULVAT

The winter months bring us frigid temperatures, along with ice and snow. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), these conditions increase the likelihood of electrical injuries, fires and electrocutions. More home fires occur during the winter months than any other part of the year. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in this country. Further, portable generators, commonly used during power outages, attribute to 50 percent of carbon monoxide deaths. You can stay up to code this season with products through Cooper Electric Supply Co. Cooper Electric Supply Co. started as a family owned business back in 1961. By 1998, it grew to 12 strategically placed branches. In 1999, Cooper Electric Supply Co. joined the Sonepar USA family of electrical supply distributors. organizing ng Tips Are you feeling overwhelmed with the idea of organizing your family photographs? Or, does the thought of losing all your family memories in a disaster leave you sick to your stomach? If so, follow these tips on how to store and preserve photos so you can enjoy them for years to come.

MAKE PRINTS Printing photos is the simplest and easiest way to make sure your memories will be around years from now. In days before digital cameras taking pictures meant you had to get prints. You deposited your film and you got prints back – that was the only way to actually see your photos. And that’s why you can go to your grandmother’s house and look through albums of old pictures.

TRANSFER VIDEOS OR SLIDES

THE CLOUD

Why fight with an old projector and screen, or an outdated VCR? If you insist on digitizing, transfer your movies, photos and slides to DVD or flash drive. It’s a great reason to have a screening at your next family get-together.

Starting with having a backup of your photo archives outside your computer is a good idea. However, why not do double-duty? Storing digital photos with a third-party Cloud service, like the free Google Drive or Apple iCloud Photo, may be the simplest way if you set your phone to automatically upload new photos.
