When I moved to Pennsylvania from California several years ago, it was not quite love at first sight. The cold, the roads, the lack of ocean, the (at the time) absence of wine at the grocery store—where was I? I was in the Lehigh Valley, a community I only truly began to discover when I started writing for Marketplace in 2014. The unfamiliar towns came to life as I learned about the lives of their inhabitants—the artists, the restaurateurs, the mom-andpop business owners, the everyday people championing for noble nonprofits—and spun my conversations with them into stories for you. The more I learned, the more I realized how much there is to love about living here.

6 APRIL 2017

I learned about Phoebe, a six-year-old girl who survived acute lymphoblastic leukemia and broadcasts a cooking show out of her house to thousands of viewers every week. I learned about Bob McLeod, a local comic book artist who illustrated the legendary issue of Superman where Clark Kent reveals his true identity to Lois Lane. I learned about Community Bike Works, a nonprofit in Allentown that teaches at-risk youth bike mechanics and rewards them with two wheels of their own at the end of the program. I learned about hiking on South Mountain, life in the Rodale test kitchen, and Dr. David Hay—a podiatrist in Emmaus who still makes house calls. I bobbed in 1,000 pounds of epsom salt for a relaxing activity known as floating at Metta Relaxation Co. in Bethlehem; I drank the best vodka tonic I’ve ever had—made with locally distilled vodka— at The Social Still. It has been a good few years. Fast forward to today: I’m head over heels for this pocket of the country. I couldn’t be more proud to call it my home and to follow in the footsteps of Amy Hines, an incredible friend, colleague, and editor. Thank you, Amy, for everything you’ve done. Here’s to Amy; here’s to you, the reader; and here’s to Marketplace—a publication that celebrates the Lehigh Valley and all of the people who make it such a special place to live, work, and play.

12 APRIL 2017

Individually, they’re Dan Maher, Jon Lunger, Matt Candio, and Evan Stutts, but every Friday night at 10:30, the quartet moonlights as ManDudeBro, the longest running improv comedy group in the Lehigh Valley without any cast changes.

LEHIGHVALLEYMARKETPLACE.COM

13

ManDudeBro For $6—if you get there early enough— you can have a front row seat to what they promise is the “cheapest and best date night in town.” Here’s how it works: they pick a volunteer from the audience to come on stage and answer a few questions. Then, they improvise an entire show around the answers. The joke, the comics assure hesitant participants, isn’t on the audience member—rather, the comedy is inspired by what they share. “It’s therapeutic for people to have their world turned into a comedy piece,” Jon says.

First things first. Who are you guys? Jon: I have two lovely cats, I read too many comic books, and my doctor says I need to lose some weight. I love my parents—they’re still married! I went to school for music and I don’t use that degree at all. Dan: I live with my cat, an orange tabby. He likes to wake me up at 2 a.m., 3:15 a.m., and one last time at 4:30 a.m. I also live with my wife, whom I love very much. Evan: I don’t have a cat and I’m going gray.

Matt: I’ve been involved in theatre since middle school, but I started a career in comedy in 2009 after I graduated from DeSales University. I have many cats, but none of them are mine.

Dan: I’m an independent video producer, so I edit and shoot commercials, web videos, instructional videos, and whatever people ask me to shoot. Evan: I’m a bartender at Fegley’s Brew Works in Allentown. Matt: I’m a sales associate at a privately owned GNC.

Standup comedy is one person telling their story. ManDudeBro is four people telling an audience member’s story.

What were you guys like in high school? Jon: I was a band geek. Dan: I was a chess nerd. I was on the chess team four years in a row, and was finally made co-captain my senior year. I never made it to captain though. Evan: I was the class clown.

You say you do “long form improv comedy.” What does that mean? Jon: Think of it like a one-act play that’s being made up on the spot.

Matt: I wasn’t the class clown—but I was funny.

Dan: A lot of people think of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, which is known as short form improv. One thing that people might not realize about that show is that it’s partially scripted and they shoot several takes. Short form improv is, at the root, meant to make you better at performing. Long form is a little bit deeper, richer, and more sustainable. Evan: There are no mistakes, and if there are, they have to be used.

®

Matt: It’s about creating an entire piece from a suggestion, or sometimes nothing at all.

What can someone expect when they come to your show?

“You, with me - always ”

Jon: There’s a fair amount of grounded absurdity. It can be wacky and goofy, but our idea is to be as true to whatever world we’re creating as possible. It’s not wacky just for the sake of being wacky. Dan: Expect to laugh as we look to make sense of the chaos.

Wear your loved one’s touch in silver or gold

Evan: Expect the unexpected. Our show is convincingly absurd.

been doing this together for a long time. We love each other and we love what we’re creating together, and I think that makes the audience feel connected to and “in on” the show.

What’s the difference between standup comedy and long form improv comedy? Evan: The best way I can describe it is that it’s kind of like “Saturday Night Live.” If it’s done well, it should seem like it was scripted. Dan: Standup comedy is one person telling their story. ManDudeBro is four people telling an audience member’s story. Jon: Dan, that was beautiful. Matt: With standup, you show the audience this house you’ve built. With long form improv, you are building the house in front of them.

How do you react when a joke doesn’t land at all? Jon: Our jokes always land. No, you know, we commit so hard to the reality that we build that we just keep going. We trust in each other that we’re going to find and build something that’s going to get a laugh. I also don’t have time to dwell on it until afterwards. Dan: Double down on it. When it doesn’t land, do it more and do it bigger. It’s like if you’re at the casino and you bet on black and it comes up red, but you stick with black. Eventually, black’s going to come up and you’re going to win some money.

Did you know poor air quality exacerbates asthma, a silent epidemic that has a disatrous effect on quality of life. Purify & optimize your air quality with the proper working HVAC system and keep your superhero soaring.

ManDudeBro Jon: I don't think that's how gambling works, Dan. Evan: Trying to push jokes on stage never works. The best thing you can do is live in the moment and try to work towards something more honestly. Matt: When you’re invested in the scene and reacting honestly, the comedy will happen, so don’t go for the joke.

What’s always funny to you? Jon: Not farts, but people’s reactions to farts. It isn’t the fart itself, but it’s people’s disdain or disgust or when they laugh. The moment of discovery always makes me laugh. Dan: One of them is people’s reactions to silly or frustrating moments, or when my wife does impressions of our cat. Evan: People’s habits. I’m kind of a creep, so I watch people when they’re in their cars. I’m always studying everyone, because humans are creatures of habit and they are the most interesting thing about living. Matt: Those lizards that run on two legs across water.

What’s your favorite comedy movie? Jon: “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” It was the first R-rated movie I saw in a theater and it introduced me to Mel Brooks.

Dan: “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” Is that a comedy? I’m a big animation nerd, so I liked seeing that chance to mash up cartoons.

for a great time

Evan: “Blues Brothers.” The original. It’s a really nice mixture of soul and blues music and they crash, like, 200 Chicago cop cars, which is amazing. Matt: This is tough. I really like “Ghostbusters” (1984).

What’s something that the audience would never guess about you? Jon: I had a stroke. That counts, right?

smithbrostents.com 610.433.6703

Dan: I once voiced a dog for a cartoon on Sesame Street. I had a more substantial role, but Kevin Clash, the guy who does Elmo’s voice, stole my job. Seriously. Evan: I was on a national fishing show in 2011. It was a mockumentary about a reality show that was trying to find a host for the reality show. We went to cities pretending it was a real show to get strangers to try out for it. Matt: I’m an an extrovert.

It was called The Red Rooster Coffee Shop, and as soon as Billy walked through its doors, he felt at home. “We ended up having a show at The Red Rooster and I just walked in and fell in love with the place,” he says. “It was a place where everyone knew each other; it was people of all ages, subcultures, and mindsets. Everybody just piled in, respected each other, and had a good time.” The environment made such an impact that Billy relocated to the Midwest from his hometown of East Stroudsburg to work at the shop and help them start a nonprofit in the community. Working with members of The Red Rooster, Billy developed The Fallout, which he describes as “a visible and vibrant arts community that embraces people of all abilities to live creatively together.” After his stint in South Dakota, Billy spent some time traveling the country before landing in Allentown. The souvenir he returned to Pennsylvania with was the idea to bring a community like the one he experienced at The Red Rooster to his new home. On January 26, 2016, that dream became a reality when he opened Allentown’s Coffee House Without Limits in the same building as the Alternative Gallery, a local nonprofit arts organization. Since its inception, the Alternative Gallery has provided gallery and studio space for artists, regularly hosting local performing acts and an open mic on Sunday nights. Their mission seemed a perfect fit for Billy’s experience and own drive for community. “Through another weird series of

events, I ended up getting in touch with the people at the Alternative Gallery, and they were looking to put a coffee shop in the building,” he says. After one year in business, Billy is sitting back and taking stock of how far the business has come. “It's surpassed my expectations for it,” he says.

As much as he understands and recognizes the need for the coffee shop to sustainably generate revenue, his goal is to almost operate it more as a community center.

One success has been his ability to involve the local community in the business. The sandwiches and other menu items, for instance, are made by Sunneen, which is located just five blocks from the coffee house. “It’s family run—they’ve been around for almost thirty years,” Billy says. Billy also works with three local bakers and gets coffee beans from roast-

The community is involved with the shop on a much deeper level than simple food and beverage transactions.

A CREATIVE COMMUNITY VENUE As much as he understands and recognizes the need for the coffee shop to sustainably generate revenue, his goal is to almost operate it more as a community center. “The people who hang out in this shop believe in the goal of it, whether they intrinsically know it or not,” he says. It turns out that outlook is what has been bringing customers through the door. On just about any given night, the coffee shop becomes a center for local musicians, writers, comedians, and artists to showcase their art. Local art adorns the walls, and each week is filled with events such as the “No Mic Open Mic” and poetry readings. In a single day, the shop will host a writer’s meet-up during the afternoon and a comedy event at night. “I try to encourage creativity and conversation of all kinds,” he says. “That's our core value.”

tron or performer may express an idea that is exclusionary or offensive to another. It’s a delicate balance because Billy also strives to create an open and apolitical environment where locals can come and engage in city politics. It works, in part, because Billy keeps his own personal politics to the side. He also encourages local politicians from all parties to come and converse with their constituents at the shop. The secret, Billy says, is to remain open and respectful.

“I always approach every situation with the knowledge that I could be wrong,” he says. “I try to avoid cultural imperialism where I show up, decide what's cool, and push that on everyone.”

Instead, Billy’s approach is much more democratic. Many of the books on the shelves are donated and he'll ask customers—both in the store and online—what events they want to see and then bring in people who share their ideas and allow them to host the events themselves.

For Savvy Travelers

We talk to the media and represent the team, and we also do a lot of coaching. With the IronPigs, I’m mostly in charge of catchers and infielders. We organize and schedule things like team fundamentals and individual defense every day. In addition, we gather information so that we can deliver scouting reports on other teams. Then, of course, we actually manage the game—we decide who’s playing, who’s pitching, and who to bring in from the pen.

What’s special about baseball to you? Why not play another sport? The game of baseball is like life, and you have to make a ton of adjustments in the middle of it. Sometimes it can seem a little slow—it’s not very fast with back-to-back action—but it’s a thinking man’s game. It’s a lot like chess.

Fiesta Ole' good taste

T EQ U I L A HO U S E WRITTEN BY CÉZANNE COLVIN

At 8:30 p.m. on a Saturday night, Fiesta Olé Tequila House was lively—not noisy. There’s a difference. I’ve been to a lot of those restaurants, the noisy ones—the ones where you can hear the third-date couple’s cooing banter in the booth to your right and the uncle at the head of the table to your left with a fifth-grader’s interpretation of the cue “use your inside voice” tell a story—and this isn’t one of them.

40 APRIL 2017

Tequila House The point is that the acoustics here were impressive. Despite almost every single table still being occupied as the clock crept towards 9 p.m.—a promising indictation of how good the food is—I wasn’t overwhelmed by the crowd and I couldn’t discern a single conversation taking place. Here’s what I could hear: a charming cover of City and Colour’s “The Girl”—which happens to have been my favorite song of 2009, so I was liking this place more and more already—being sung by a live guitarist in a distant corner. Her voice was what you hope for when live entertainment intersects with your dining: not intrusive, but pleasant enough that you look up and take note. The restaurant itself is across from the Lehigh Valley Mall, a modest outpost next to a Midas automotive center on one of the busiest divided highways in the Lehigh Valley. It’s likely that you’ve driven by it, perhaps wondering what it was like inside. The interior, while decidedly casual, is charming. The terra cotta colored tiles on the floor, talavera-studded columns, and walls outfitted in Aztec-inspired masks come across as thoughtful, not kitschy, but I don’t go to Mexican restaurants for the decor—I go for the guacamole.

Avocados are ubiquitous today thanks to simple sensations like avocado toast hitting the mainstream with unprecedented gusto, but I have been eating at least a quarter of an avocado a day (and enjoying telling people that it’s for “healthy fat” purposes when, in reality, avocados could be carcinogenic and I’d still throw them back with my current frequency and fervor) since I was about 9. 4743 W TILGHMAN STREET ALLENTOWN

The Shoppes of

Tequila House Here, there are three types of guacamole on the menu—Traditional, Tropical (mango and cucumber), and Red (roasted garlic and chipotle). I fancy myself a purist, so I stuck with the Traditional. A cart crowned with an enormous molcajete—a Mexican mortar and pestle—was wheeled up for the guacamole to be prepared tableside. To my delight, two whole avocados found their way into the recipe, accompanied by onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro. I could deďŹ nitely work with this. The texture of the guacamole was perfect. It was creamy enough that it could be dipped into, but it was certainly not a dip, which is the downfall of prepackaged guacamoles sitting in the refrigerated and air-tight pouches at the grocery store. There were still plenty of intact and bite-sized chunks of avocado—a necessity—but it wasn’t chunky. A second basket of chips was required to scrape every last green speck from the sides of the molcajete.

&KRFRODWH 6KRSSH ‡ %DNHU\ ‡ ,FH &UHDPHU\ The other thing I go to Mexican restaurants for is the margaritas. The margarita menu was brimming with a litany of frozen twists like Mango, Guava, Tamarindo, and Hibiscus, but again, I’m a purist. I decided on the Patrón Margarita, which could potentially be one of the best margaritas I’ve had in my life. It was tart and refreshing and, just between us, I wish that it had been served in a molcajete instead of a lowball glass.

Tortilla Soup, an essential piece of the cuisine’s canon, came in a huge bowl with a skyscraper assemblage of crispy fried tortilla strips. The broth was okay on its own, but it’s meant to be eaten with a helping of the sour cream, avocado, and pico de gallo

served on top. When you do that, the flavors bounce off one another, catching you in a sort of savory echo chamber. Short of sitting in the front row at a Fleetwood Mac reunion concert, there aren’t many other ways I’d rather spend a Saturday. Another essential pit stop on any Mexican restaurant’s menu is, of course, tacos. I’m a corn tortilla person, so the fact that the tacos come in your choice of flour or corn was a plus. The Fish Tacos (grilled tilapia, chipotle mayo, lettuce, and pico de gallo) were light and tasty. Aside from tacos and guacamole, one last must-try when dining south of the border is mole sauce. Mole poblano is that dark, complex concoction that I’ve considered making at home once or twice in my life on an ambitious Sunday afternoon, but it’s a task better outsourced to restaurants or experienced grandmothers. The sweet and smoky sauce doesn’t come easily—recipes vary, but the majority require upwards of 20 ingredients and patience for toasting, grinding, and simmering. The Enchiladas Poblanas were four chicken enchiladas smothered with the cocoa- and pepper-laden sauce, and they were delicious.

Here in the Lehigh Valley, you may not be able to feel the cool ocean sand beneath your feet, smell the briny air, or take in a sweeping vista from an alpine summit.

For those seeking a weekend retreat from the routine and a pampering place to relax and rejuvenate, there are plenty of unique inns from which to choose without even leaving the area.

“We’re conveniently located just around the corner from most of the Lehigh Valley, or as I like to say, ‘in deep West End Allentown,’” says Christopher Padden, operations manager. “In addition to the 37 well-appointed overnight rooms and suites— most equipped with soaking tubs and gas burning fireplaces—our local and not-so-local clientele will find the culinary arts, wine enthusiasm, creative cocktails, and craft beers 365 days a year.” There’s a functioning farm raising Scottish Highland cattle on Glasbern’s pastures and seasonal produce from its gardens and greenhouses. The inn also offers spa services by appointment, and caters to larger format events servicing groups as large as 150 people for weddings and corporate events. “People come to the Glasbern for dinner, for overnight getaways, for relaxation, to reconnect with each other, to get away from it all, and most importantly, just to be taken care of,” Christopher says.

GLOBE INN In continuous operation since 1895, the renovated Victorian inn sits next to the old East Greenville steam train station, hearkening back to a romantic era when rail service brought travelers to the Lehigh Valley for business and leisure. During the Prohibition, the Globe Inn even had a Rathskeller speakeasy in the basement.

“Many people don’t really know about the Upper Perkiomen Valley and all it offers,” says Paul Ulicny, owner of the Globe Inn. “It’s a hidden gem, close to skiing at Bear Creek, fine dining, shopping, art and antique galleries, and parks in places like Skippack, Pennsburg, and Green Lane.” The Lehigh Valley region is the top market for the Globe Inn, which presents 13 themed suites reflecting destinations from around the globe such as Santa Fe and Vienna. Nine of the Globe’s suites have Jacuzzis and fireplaces.

Electric

LEH IG H VALLE Y

WRITTEN BY JENNIFER HAY

The light in your kitchen has been flickering on and off, and you have a growing suspicion that there’s something major going on behind your walls. You want an electrician who is responsive and who knows the ins and outs of residential electrical systems. You need service, you need it quickly, and you’re not sure who to call. Your need is what Bob Holland had in mind when he started Lehigh Valley Electric in 2004. As a foreman for a large industrial contractor, he observed a lack of customer service for the homeowner. “I saw the need for a different kind of contractor, focusing solely on residential homeowners,” he recalls. He likens the larger contractors to electrical service wholesalers, and says Lehigh Valley Electric is more like an electrical services retailer. “We deal directly with the homeowner. I like to work with the end user and see the benefits they get from our service. It feels good to help people and solve their problems,” he says.

“Most homeowners don’t need electricians that often—maybe once every six or seven years, when something happens,” Tracy says. But even so, the company’s responsiveness has earned it repeat customers. “Our business is based a lot on referrals and reviews. People are always looking for good people, and they can be hard to find.” The Hollands are proud that Lehigh Valley Electric has garnered more than 500 five-star reviews on websites that rate home improvement services and has been awarded the Angie’s List Super Service Award for outstanding

customer service every year since 2009, along with other home improvement website awards. Lehigh Valley Electric technicians will be out making repairs or replacing or upgrading electrical panels on most days, but they are also regularly called on to install ceiling fans and other fixtures, as well as perform electrical safety inspections, which the Hollands note should be done every year. Larger jobs include providing electrical service for kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects, converting home lighting systems from fluorescent or incandescent to more environmentally friendly LED lighting, installation and maintenance of generators, and the installation of landscape lighting. “Most of the bigger projects are done to save money or increase the functionality of the home,” Bob says. One of the trends he’s seeing now is landscape lighting. “Homeowners spend a lot of money on landscaping to find that they can enjoy it only half of the time because it’s dark. We get a large number of landscape lighting calls so they can enjoy their yard day or night.” Regardless of the project, Bob says customers remember the responsiveness. “People remember our exceptional customer service,” he says. “If someone’s lights flicker, and we fix the problem, the next time they need something when there’s not an emergency, they’ll call us.”

Forever Spun: T H E VALLE Y ’S VI N Y L S CE N E WRITTEN BY ANDREW SHELDON

There’s a particular reaction one might hear upon divulging to someone that they collect vinyl records. “Vinyl records?” the recipient of this information might say. “What on earth do you do with those old things?” If the record collector is at all savvy, they might offer that vinyl record sales reached a 25-year high in 2016 and it’s not so old-fashioned after all. “In fact,” they would say, “it even brought in more revenue than streaming services.”

62 APRIL 2017

And, indeed, they would be right. To bring some of that business to the local record shop—think John Cusack’s store in the 2000 film “High Fidelity”—a group of record enthusiasts in Baltimore decided there should be a day that celebrated vinyl, the musicians that make it, the stores that sell it, and the fans that buy it. The day was officially launched in 2007 and is now synonymous with special vinyl pressings for the day, extended hours for the stores, and hundreds—sometimes thousands—of fans lined up in the early morning hours for the chance to get that new, collectable piece from their favorite artists. This year, April 22 will mark a decade of celebrating indie record stores with Record Store Day. The occasion has been so successful that in 2012, a second day was added: Black Friday Record Store Day.

Spun cold and impersonal, the new location on Wyandotte Street lends itself to the homier feel of archivalist stacks filled with twelve-inch wax. “Record Store Day was huge for us,” says Brad Smith, the employee who was sitting behind Vixen Vinyl’s counter listening to the Traveling Wilburys.

With the experience of Black Friday Record Store Day fresh in their mind, the shop is gearing up for the first national celebration of the local record shop of 2017. Brad says it has generated some serious business in previous years. “We rang more deals in an hour then we would do in a month sometimes,” he says. “Record Store Day is really good for us, and the next day, we can put it all up online.” By participating in Record Store Day, stores agree to adhere to strict event timelines by not posting the year’s special release information or selling the releases at the standard price to keep from competition on the day. For a day designed to bring people to the stores, that’s a difficult line of logic to argue.

“After that, you can raise or lower the prices based on what you sell in the store,” Brad says. But Double Decker in Allentown is moving to a tempo of its own rotations-per-minute, deciding to celebrate the day in its own way. For vinyl collectors, the shop is a little bit of a dream. Like Vixen Vinyl, there’s a warmth to the rows of alphabetized records. only copy of Weezer’s Blue Album. Where Vixen Vinyl’s collection is orderly and methodical, Double Decker’s is lived in. But, for collectors, the littlest bit of disorder is sometimes welcome: the process—digging through the stacks looking for that one gem—is part of the fun. For Double Decker’s owner, Jamie Holmes, the limitations and products weren’t worth the cost. So, he decided to release his own collections of used material for last year’s Black Friday Record Store Day. “I've decided I'm not going to order the limited releases,” he says. “Instead, I got a couple of nice collections, saved those for that day, and unleashed about a thousand really rare LPs.” It made things easier on the shop and didn’t hurt their business. “The same crowd was waiting outside and we were packed at 8:30 in the morning,” Jamie says. “We did more business than we did with the limited releases.” Nick Rose, who operates the Easton Record Exchange, is also starting to curtail how much of the limited releases his store will carry on Record Store Day. He says his store took a cue from Double Decker and opted to instead emphasize a large collection of used punk records the store acquired for Black Friday and found similar success.

“I’m trying to limit the amount of stuff I’m buying,” he says. “When I first opened, I was really gung-ho about it and would order seven boxes full of stuff but I found it pretty difficult to move everything.” Still, Nick says this last Record Store BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER TAKE-OUT BANQUETS 3015 LEHIGH ST. Day was the best he’d ever had, even though he’d dropped from ordering seven boxes of merchandise to just one. “I was very selective about it—it was all stuff I thought was pretty cool,” he says. “It’s stuff I thought I would want, rather than getting stuck with three copies of a Grateful Dead concert that I still have from Record Store Day 2013.”

That's a large part of the approach regarding how Nick and his team run the store: they want to make it a shop that they themselves would want to visit. It’s a clever way to make use of the shop’s small location off the square in Easton. Nick grew up breaking pencils drumming along to Nirvana on his desk; Tom Patterson, of the local band Slingshot Dakota, works behind the counter when he isn’t on tour. So, the idea is to carry the music they’re passionate about. Because they’re passionate about music in general, they’ve found a niche curating idiosyncratic albums on its shelves. “This was opened by guys who buy records,” he says. “The reason we did this was because it sucked to live in Easton if you were a record guy. We’d have to go all the way to Allentown, New York, or the Princeton Record Exchange.”

For a lot of vinyl buyers, the love of the hunt and the apparent lottery regarding any given store’s inventory is part of the fun. The appreciation for unique pressings of old records and the personal relationship vinyl collecting allows audiophiles to have with their music isn’t lost on Jamie. In fact, he knows that’s why people will line up hours before Double Decker opens its doors on April 22, 2017. “We

have a lot of people that come in from far away and sit here digging all day just looking for that gem,” Jamie says. “Searching on eBay will never be as fun as rooting through crates of records.” “I come from the digital age where we're used to streaming music and we have a library of music right at our fingertips,” Nick says, but recognizes that breadth doesn’t always spell depth. He says says there’s a human element to be celebrated at the record store, and there’s something to be cherished in the ability to discuss your passion with like-minded people. Perhaps the record shop is one of the last outposts for the analog experience; a place where people who spend most their days barreling down the lanes of the information superhighway can stop for a few moments and put their feet on the ground.

This just in: for the thousandth year in a row, “diet and exercise” is—and will always be—the best way to stay svelte year-round. We know the solution, of course, but getting there isn’t always as simple. How do we create nutritious meals around obstacles like diabetes and gluten sensitivities? What kind of exercises can we do when we have arthritis or we’re recovering from torn rotator cuffs? Are there any options for losing stubborn fat when months of dedicated diet and exercise still haven’t provided results? What do we do when there isn’t an app for that? Dr. Bill Strowhouer, the medical director of Physicians Weight Control, may have an answer. The physician-supervised clinic has been helping people lose and keep weight off for 30 years. “What propels

Shape Up achieve this is with a mixture of reducing calorie consumption (diet) and increasing calories burned (exercise). With rampant misinformation, trendy diets, and confusing nutrition labels, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to develop a meal plan tailored to your body’s precise caloric needs that’s also nutritionally sound. “We offer one- to ten-week physician-designed plans based on your medical history, goals, and body type, Dr. Strowhouer says. The plans detail the exact foods and amounts that you should be consuming—all you have to do for success is stick to it. “Many people ask which diet is the best, be it Atkins, South Beach, lowcarb, or high-protein, he says. “The best diet for you is the diet that you can live with.

Exercise, the other primary component of weight control, can be just as confusing as the dieting aspect for both avid exercisers and those who consider shopping to be cardio. Physicians Weight Control offers exercise plans for all levels of ďŹ tness. “We cater to people who don’t have a gym membership as well as people who go to the gym several times per week and still can’t get rid of stubborn pockets of fat,â€? Dr. Strowhouer says. “We even have walking plans for people who are very inactive.â€?

Add Extra Accountability Inform friends or family members about your healthy lifestyle goals. Often, unhealthy food and lifestyle choices are enabled by those with whom we spend the most time, tempt-

ing us by ordering pizza or encouraging us to skip the gym and go out for drinks instead. Be clear about your new lifestyle and ask them to hold you accountable. Even better, team up with someone who has similar goals and keep each other focused with motivational text messages and support.

Stop Post-Dinner Snacking Many people find it easy to stick to healthy habits during the day, but find themselves falling off track at night. A handful of chips turns into absentmindedly eating the entire bag in front of the television; a bite of cake becomes two slices. “Your body is in ‘slowdown mode’ at night,” Dr. Strowhouer says. “Most of the calories that you eat late at night will eventually be stored as fat because your body isn’t using that energy.” If you absolutely have to have a bite of something? “Fast-digesting carbohydrates like fruits are the best thing for you to have,” he suggests.

Stay Active All of the sitting that you do every day adds up—but all of your activity adds up too. By taking the stairs whenever possible, parking farther away from store entrances, using your lunch break to take a brisk walk, and doing bodyweight exercises in your living room during television commercials, you can burn hundreds of extra calories every week.

“There’s a huge difference between an over-the-counter dietary supplement and getting a prescribed dietary medication,” Dr. Strowhouer explains. “Dietary supplements don’t need to prove anything to the FDA. We only use medications that have withstood the test of time, and our patients have great success with them.”

“It sounded too good to be true,” Dr. Strowhouer says of Strawberry Laser Lipo, a cutting-edge and FDAapproved new treatment option for combatting stubborn fat. “The treatment is non-invasive, painless, and has no downtime. It lasts 20 minutes, and most people lose at least 2 inches cumulatively in that 20 minutes. Don’t confuse this with old-school lipo—this isn’t liposuction, it’s laserinduced lipolysis. Lipolysis is the body’s natural process of breaking down fat cells through diet and exercise. The laser breaks down triglycerides into component parts that are expelled out of the fat cell and excreted from the body through the lymphatic system—through perspiration and urination.” The results, he says, are immediately measurable after the procedure, with eight treatments being recommended in addition to consistent exercise and a healthy diet for optimal results. We spend the majority of our waking hours at work, which means that most of us also spend the majority of our waking hours in stark gray fortresses with tangled wires at our feet, hand-me-down cabinets, scattered Post-It notes, and a miscellaneous melting pot of office supplies underneath a harsh fluorescent glare. It is within these dreary confines that we are expected to be our best and brightest, our most creative, and our friendliest, but it’s no surprise that it sometimes seems like a struggle. For maximizing morale and productivity, our offices should be comfortable and inspiring, according to Amy Bloom-Coleman, owner of the design and staging company Spun Design. She gave the office here at Meris a much-needed makeover and shared a few tips for how to whip workspaces into shape.

Office Space Problem: A Difference of Taste Solution: When you have a lot of preferences and personalities to please, it can seem impossible to do so by hanging up one large piece of art— and that’s because it is. “You should create a wall of interest instead,” Amy says. “Rather than using one piece of art, which no one will ever agree on, several smaller pieces give the opportunity to please everybody and make them happy to be there.”

Problem: Ugly Carpeting

Dr. Sackman Introduces

Solution: As much as we want to rip up drab carpet and lay down shiny hardwood in its bland wake, what do you do when that isn’t an option? “What you do is try to bring everyone’s eyes up instead,” Amy says. “Some decor on the walls does wonders, and you can detract from a bad carpet with a fresh throw rug.”

Solution: A variety of storage solutions are the best way to organize your office space. Desk shelves, bulletin boards, filing cabinets, and drawers all serve different purposes. Aiming for a minimalist look might seem smart, but the reality is that all of your papers can’t live in a hidden folder and will ultimately end up strewn across your desk, so make sure that you have some easy-access and easily displayed spots for your belongings. The more organized you are, the more productive you’ll be. “People always want to catch up so that they can live their lives,” Amy says. “When people have things that are cluttered in the corner or hanging on the wall with tape, they are always telling themselves that they’ll ‘get to

Problem: A Lack of Personality Solution: A bare workspace can seem cold and clinical—employees should be invited to settle in and express themselves. Hanging up photographs is a quick way to make people feel at home, but Amy warns that they pictures shouldn’t just be stuck in frames or taped to the wall. “Matte your photos in their frames to avoid everything feeling like grandma’s house,” she suggests. If new furniture or paint jobs aren’t feasible, small pops of color can add fun and intrigue, and the addition of plants—both real and fake—keep things fresh. “Fake plants have come a long way—there are some that really pass the test and help bring in the feeling of being outdoors,” Amy says.

Solution: Sometimes, the answer isn’t even adding anything. “Coco Chanel says to look in the mirror before you leave the house and take something off,” Amy says. “You can do the same thing with your office—identify what you don’t need and do away with it. Then look around and see what you can rearrange. Change the way desks, tables, and chairs are facing, move the water cooler, or let an unused piece of furniture in one room find a new function in a different room. Be creative with what you already have.”

Problem: it all needs work Solution: When you know that a lot of work needs to be done, it can often seem daunting to even start, but you don’t have to do everything at once for an office refresh to be worth it. “Focus on what I call ‘the first five impressions,’ or the first five things you see when you enter a space,” Amy suggests, drawing on her experience of staging homes for sale. “The first five things someone sees when they enter a house can determine whether they want to buy the house or drive away—same for an office. The first five impressions set the tone for the entire workplace.” Spun Design 484.951.2600 spundesign.com
