Everyone who reads my letters knows how much I love the Lehigh Valley. I spent nearly 47 years of my life growing up here, living here and raising my family here. My family, those three people who I love and adore, who make my world complete… those same three people who drove me to a moment this morning in which I was shouting in desperation, “Calgon…Take Me Away!” In that moment, I wanted to be anywhere else but in the Lehigh Valley with my Hines peeps. In that moment, I needed a getaway. I needed to get away.

Life is busy. I get it. Heck, I signed up for it. There are obligations – a lot of them. And with those obligations comes stress – a lot of it. Most times I’m up for the challenge. But some days I crave a reset button where I can just get away and come back with a fresh perspective. Sometimes all it takes is a night out with friends or a quiet evening alone. Other times, planning a trip is just what I need. Whether it is a quick, one-night escape or jetting off to put my toes in the sand a vacation is the ticket to refreshing my mind and senses.

To save you from the stress of what to pack, Kelly Cerimele scoured the Lehigh Valley to find just what you need for your getaway. Turn to page 36 for the best in travel goods. Take my advice and schedule that time away. Like me, you will benefit from a well-earned break, and so will your family. Every town seems to have a comic book store, and every citizen seems to have wondered, at one point or another, how it manages to stay in business, seemingly immune to economic hardship and digital migration. (Somewhat easily, as it turns out: comic book and graphic novel sales hit a staggering $935 million in 2014, a 20-year high for the industry.)
Many years later, he would indeed have a resume with 600 comic books on it, including the legendary issue of Superman where Clark Kent finally reveals his true identity to Lois Lane

Bob McLeod If you were to wander into your local comic book store, then, you might come across a fan hypothesizing what’s next for his favorite superhero, trying to barter for a shrink-wrapped collector’s edition, or tucked away in an aisle, feverishly thumbing through page after page and issue after issue, binging on benevolent characters’ skirmishes with villains. Comic books can be consuming for their fans, yes, but they are just as consuming for their creators. Twelve issues later, and this fan will have absorbed a year of work for someone like Bob McLeod, a renowned Superman, Spider-Man, and Star Wars comic book illustrator based in Emmaus. “The average person probably doesn’t realize how much work is involved in creating a comic book,” McLeod says. “The lettering, the coloring, the drawing, the inking – everyone thinks it’s much easier than it is.”

With 22 pages per issue and each page demanding a full day of work, the comic book industry isn’t for the faint of heart. The rushed deadlines are McLeod’s biggest on-the-job nemesis, and perhaps the inspiration behind the superpower he wishes he could have: “Super-speed, or the ability to slow down time,” he says. It’s okay, though, because this is his dream job. When McLeod was five years old, he woke up one morning and casually handled decisions that some of

What should I be when I grow up? (Well, probably a cartoonist.) Despite never taking an art class until college – although his university discouraged cartooning and he ultimately ended up teaching himself – McLeod knew from the moment that he finished that kindergarten kitchen doodle that he was going to make a living drawing cartoons. “I didn’t want it to be a hobby,” McLeod says. “I knew I could do it, so I was persistent and stubborn.” Many years later, he would indeed have a resume with 600 comic books on it, including the legendary issue of Superman where Clark Kent finally reveals his true identity to Lois Lane, as well as his essential role in co-creating The New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff. Today, he creates comic book covers for Marvel and teaches the next generation of budding cartoonists at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, a private art college in Lancaster. Of course, his path to success was paved with a series of setbacks and humbling moments. In 1974, McLeod landed a gig at Marvel. His job was in the production department, he recalls, and it entailed the task of taping page numbers onto pages. With his foot in the door, he de-

THE GUYS DID A GREAT JOB AND
“The DC art director told me to go back to school and learn how to draw,” McLeod says.“I thought my early samples were great, but they were horrible.”
Took the Time,
TO GO OVER THINGS WITH US.”
This is the point where a lot of people give up, but not McLeod. He realized that it wasn’t enough to be able to draw a character – he had to be able to draw the character leaping, crouching, sitting, and from every possible angle.
– Matt R. of Northampton
“You don’t have a model standing there posing for you, so you really have to learn figure drawing from your imagination,” McLeod says. “And then you not only have to know how to dress your figures, but also how to draw cars and boats and airplanes and guns.”

He took the art director’s advice and learned how to draw, eventually establishing himself as a freelance comic book artist for Marvel and DC Comics while he developed his signature style. “The word ‘clean’ comes up when people are describing my style,” he says. “I have very controlled line work, as
opposed to rough and sketchy. I try to draw individuals rather than stereotypical superhero males and females – I try to make my characters more like real people as far as their body types go.”
Confidence & Convenience
The unrealistic expectations of gender in comic books aren’t lost on the artist. “With females, certainly, their costumes are ridiculous – they’re not at all practical for someone who wants to do super-heroic action,” McLeod says. “There have been some efforts in recent times to make that better, but I think there needs to be more common sense with that kind of thing. The guys, too, are way too overdeveloped muscularly. People forget that your muscles aren’t flexed all the time.” McLeod has been able to find balance between fantasy and reality while also exploring his love of humor in passion projects like “SuperHero ABC,” the children’s book he published in 2008. Next, he hopes to dabble in oil and acrylic still life and landscape paintings. When he isn’t cartooning or at comic book conventions, you can find him watching Better Call Saul on Netflix or playing tennis.

She has one hand on her 35mm digital camera, which is also secured with a strap around her neck, while her other hand is in the air, wildly gesturing along with her commands. She sighs, exasperated. “Ugh, you moved too much.” She pauses as she contemplates how to salvage her vision and moves around the model instead as she continues to snap. Finally, she pulls the camera away and squints intently at her footage. She seems satisfied. “I just love photography now,” she says. Her name is Lydia, and she is 12 years old.

Welcome to an afternoon of Faces of the South Side, an after-school program that recently turned four years old. It runs on a grant from ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory, yes, but it’s powered by the passion of photographer Ryan Hulvat and an all-star team of assistants: Ruth Rohrer, Justin Gifford, and Dawn Moser, Hulvat’s wife. It culminates with a show at the South Side Arts Festival, yes, but the real takeaway – the reason why Ryan hasn’t had much else on his mind for months – Is the immense personal development that unfolds for the children as the program progresses. “I want the kids to know that they can be whatever they want to be if they’re passionate about it,” Ryan says. “I want them to know that there are possibilities.” It’s about photography, yes, but it’s also about life. “Faces of the South Side isn’t just photography,” says Stacie Brennan, the senior director of Visual Arts and Education at ArtsQuest. “It uses the umbrella of photography to teach life skills – healthy living, social skills, and, of course, problem solving. Photography isn’t an easy skill to learn.” For an hour and a half on Tuesdays and Thursdays, fifteen Broughal Middle Schoolers roll into Hulvat’s sunny Bethlehem studio, where they learn about photography and take pictures of figures in the community – business owners, chefs, city planners, and artists are among this semester’s lineup of models. Amid the scuffling of tennis shoes across the studio floor, chatter about Snapchat filters and Selena Gomez’s latest single fades as the students direct their attention

to more pressing matters, like their after-school snack. Hulvat is concerned with what the kids eat after school, too. “Food is love, and food is important because you can’t learn if you’re not fed. I like to feed them things that will make them smarter, healthier, and stronger,” he says, piling pulled pork onto a fresh roll with a slice of pineapple, coleslaw, and a side salad for each student. He drizzles a thin ribbon of Sriracha on each sandwich. “You’ll like it,” he promises. (They do.) After a quick lecture, the students split into smaller groups to tackle their photography subjects of the day. Some stay in Hulvat’s studio, some head outside, and one group adventures to an unused wing of the building: a bright, window-lined loft space. The model in this room smiles, moves, and leaps for the students, but the young photographers’ screens return dark images that are hard to make out. “Figure out where the light is coming from so you know where to stand,” Moser reminds them, helpfully angling a reflector to bounce light across their portraits. She draws on her degree in Art Education from Kutztown University to guide the students. “It’s important to teach kids communication skills and the ability to work through simple problems and simple tasks,” she says. Lydia is trying to get another good shot now, one that her grandparents might like. She lives with them in Bethlehem’s Southside. Her mother and four siblings live in Allentown, and Lydia visits them most weekends. She misses them during the week, but

keeps herself busy reading. She also likes to take pictures, which is why she signed up for the program. “I thought it would be cool to capture the light,” she says thoughtfully. While the students have their own memory cards, there aren’t enough cameras for them to have their own, so they share. “I’m an artist. My pictures look really good today,” Lydia says, finally relinquishing the camera to Desiree. Two hoop earrings large enough to fit a telephoto lens through dangle from Desiree’s ears, catching the light as she tilts her head from left to right, trying to take the perfect picture. Desiree has been Lydia’s best friend since third grade – “since forever” – a fact they are both quick to share. In fact, Lydia is the reason why Desiree is here. “I never knew what to be when I grew up, so Lydia said we should try photography together since she doesn’t know what she wants to be either,” Desiree says. Prior to this program, she had only taken photographs with a cell phone. “This is way, way better,” she says.

To her left is 14 year-old Gejnique, who dismisses creative direction from a friend. “I’ve been doing this a long time,” Gejnique says confidently. He has always called the Southside home,
and he loves it. “We have a bad reputation and I don’t know why,” he says. “Plus, we have cool programs like this. This program is amazing. I love every minute of it – I’ve learned so much.”
LANDSCAPING & HARDSCAPING
Ten minutes later and Gejnique is bounding across the room to show off the pictures he’s just taken. His warm brown eyes scan the camera’s photo history as he scrolls past a series of photos dismissively before finally landing on one where the subject is jumping. “This one,” he says. “This one is my favorite. It’s a micro-movement.” If he wasn’t in the program, he’d be playing basketball after school, but he says he always does his homework first because he wants to go to college. “My parents didn’t go to college, so I want to set a better example for my younger siblings,” Gejnique says. The afternoon is a blur, and the 6 p.m. deadline arrives sooner than anyone expects. The students scramble to get in their last shots. Hulvat concludes the end of every session with a group picture, so students and instructors alike squeeze shoulder to shoulder to fit in the frame. When he gives the okay for everyone to break, it’s pandemonium: returning memory cards, accounting for cameras, stacking journals, cleaning up plates from the sandwiches, and collecting their belongings to leave, but discernible above the clamor is a girl telling her friend, “I want to be a photographer when I grow up.” To contact Ryan Hulvat about Faces of the South Side, visit ryanhulvat.com.

What has two thumbs and knows zip about soccer? Me. When I got the assignment to write about the new soccer team, the Bethlehem Steel FC, I was a bit apprehensive. I did a quick mental tally of soccer facts I DID know, and they amounted to four. Total.

I know Alex Morgan is a rock star to little girls everywhere. And I know what Cristiano Ronaldo looks like. And ladies, if you do not, look him up and thank me later. Ta Da, that’s it. Oh, I had a lot to learn. So with the help of Justen Braddock, marketing manager for the Steel, and me, actually buckling down and watching my first soccer game in its entirety E-V-E-R, I have a little bit better understanding of the sport. Not much, but there is a glimmer of light.

Fact: This is the inaugural season for Bethlehem Steel FC., and it is one of six new teams in the United Soccer League this year. The Steel is associated with the Major League Soccer Team, the Philadelphia Union and players can move up and down between rosters as the season goes on. The team practices down the road in King of Prussia, plays their games at Lehigh University and the offices are here in the Lehigh Valley. Game Day Observation: Wait, I thought soccer balls were black and white. When did soccer balls get so jiggy? Why is this ball fuchsia, white and all spider-webby with the stitching? When did that happen? Fact: Do you know why Bethlehem got the team? Do you remember back when the World Cup was being shown outside at Arts Quest and 8,000 people

showed up? The Powers That Be were looking at ESPN coverage of that, scratched their heads and said, “Hey! This might be a good place for us!” Game Day Observation: The injury-to-miraculous-cure ratio is quite high. A player falls to the ground and writhes around in pain, fooling the novice spectator like myself. We become panic stricken and perplexed as to why no one is helping this poor soul who is clearly on the verge of death. BUT WAIT, it’s a miracle. He is up and running full speed. I fell for it twice. After that, I ignored it like everyone else. See, I am getting the hang of this soccer thing. Fact: When naming the team, the Morning Call conducted a poll and 78% of responders voted to name the team Bethlehem Steel. Channeling the most winning soccer team in US history, the Bethlehem Steel Soccer Club of 1913-1930? Probably. Good memories! Good karma. Game Day Observation: Goodman Stadium at Lehigh University is a beautiful backdrop to the soccer games. Luckily its beauty distracted me from my game clock confusion. Why is the clock going UP? Who knew that there was a sport in which the clock actually times upward? Fact: The team carries a full roster at about 20 and is coached by Brendan Burke. Homegrown players Ryan Ritchter, captain of the Steel, is from Southampton and Derrick Jones is a product of the Philadelphia Union Academy. The team plays 30 games a season with the 15 homes games carried by Service Electric. The weather

for the first game was not super. It was cold and so windy but still, over 3,500 fans attended the first game, which was a pleasant surprise to many. Game Day Observation: Soccer fans seem to be divided into two distinct categories. There are the enthusiastic fans… the moms, dads and kids, the youth soccer teams and coaches, and the spectator who are there to be a part of history. And then there are the REALLY enthusiastic fans. Case in point… the East End Army.

Fact: Justen Braddock has been working feverishly since the end of December to introduce the idea of the new Bethlehem Steel FC to the Lehigh Valley. The end of March marked their first home game – that’s not very long when you think about it. Through media, partnerships with youth soccer leagues, sponsorship, community events and even parades, Braddock is confident the Lehigh Valley will embrace the new team. Game Day Observation: Uh oh, some guy just got a yellow card pointed at him. He must have done something naughty. Fact: With one minute left in the game, Erik Ayuk scored the Steel’s first goal of their first home game but the final score was 2-1, FC Cincinnati won. Game Day Observation: Why in the heck is the game not over? The clock says 90 but they are still playing? 45 + 45 = 90. Honestly, is no one seeing the clock? The game is over. What is going on?

Allen Organ Co. An Inventive Founder Jerome Markowitz, the man who would eventually found Allen Organ, was born an inventor. Growing up in Long Island, New York in the 1920s, he displayed an insatiable curiosity for early electronics. Tinkering with various “do-it-yourself” projects as a child, he built everything from an electric go-cart to a crude television. However, the more he tinkered, the more he realized his real interest lay in finding new and inventive ways to create music. Coupled with an early love of the pipe organ – which he routinely listened to on the radio and in movie theaters – this interest would ultimately spark a life-changing passion.

CREAM OF THE CROP 28 MAY 2016
Since Jerome’s father owned a textile company in Allentown, his parents decided to send him to Allentown Prep School in the early 1930s. Upon graduating, he continued his studies at Muhlenberg College. While at Muhlenberg, Jerome relished going to chapel on Thursday mornings, where he would sit and listen to the chairman of the music department play the organ. Hearing those majestic sounds reminded him of his earlier passion for music – and his still unquenchable desire to invent. So, in early 1937, Jerome made the fateful decision to quit school and follow his real passion – building a practical electric organ that could emulate the sound of a real pipe organ.
Building the First Allen Organ Fortunately for Jerome, his parents moved from to New York to Allentown

Mingling with guests such as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Nelson Rockefeller, they listened as E. Power Briggs – the most famous organist of the era – played the Allen organ to rave reviews. After determining that “tuning drift” was the main problem plaguing electromechanical organs of the time, Jerome set about inventing a way to correct the problem. His research led to a major breakthrough in the fall of 1937, when he applied for a patent on what would become known as the “stable audio oscillator”. For Jerome, this brand new piece of technology was the key to unlocking the electric organ.

As his work progressed, Jerome gained the attention of other local organ enthusiasts. In the summer of 1939, Allentown’s Evening Chronicle published a story in which they referred to him as a “22-year-old Alexander Graham Bell.” Later that same year, Jerome moved into an empty space in his father’s textile company and, with the help of the factory maintenance man and his 16-year-old son, completed his first fully functional electric organ. Dubbing it the “Allen organ” after the city in which he invented it, Jerome immediately began marketing his new invention. In early 1940, he made his first sale to the pastor of

St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Allentown. A short time later, Quakertown’s highly popular Trainer’s Restaurant purchased the second Allen organ for entertainment. The following year, he secured a third order from Temple Keneseth Israel in Allentown.
Like many people, Jerome’s life was temporarily interrupted by the outbreak of U.S. involvement in World War II. From 1942, through the end of the war in 1945, production of Allen organs was put on hold as the entire nation pulled together to support the war effort. In mid-1945, as American industry finally began a slow transition back to peacetime production, the building of Allen organs once again resumed. To help structure his fledgling company, Jerome incorporated as the Allen Organ Company in the summer of 1945. With fifteen employees now working for him, he sold approximately 10 organs throughout the following year. This success helped make it possible for the company to lease a much more expansive 14,000 square foot factory space at 8th and Pittston Streets in Allentown in 1946.

Always looking for ways to improve his products, Jerome developed and patented another groundbreaking invention, known as the “gyrophonic projector” in 1949. Essentially a rotating speaker system, the projector enhanced the “liveliness” of the electronically generated pipe tones, thereby making Allen organs sound even more like a real pipe organ. To help expand their market outside of the Lehigh Valley, the company also began developing relationships with national dealers. This led to increased sales, which in turn prompted a series of expansions. In an effort to keep up with the fast-paced growth, Allen Organ purchased a 25,000 square foot plant in Macungie in early 1953. Coupled with a workforce of 130 people, this new space also allowed the company to develop several new instruments, such as the “organette”, which was introduced in 1955 for the home market.

As the company grew and developed, Allen Organ also began to make a name through some high-profile customers. In 1957, the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra Company opted to use an Allen organ for a special performance at the Academy of Music. A few years later, Jackie Gleason had an Allen organette installed in his home office so he could play musical inspirations for his show. And in 1961, Lawrence Welk purchased an Allen electronic harpsichord for use on his incredibly popular television variety show.
when New York’s Lincoln Center was preparing to open its Philharmonic Hall with a gala concert. Although initial plans called for the installation of a pipe organ, as opening night drew near it became clear that the instrument would not be ready in time. To address the problem, the hall convened a committee that included the esteemed composer/ conductor Leonard Bernstein.
But perhaps the most powerful endorsement came in September 1962,
Carefully weighing its options, the group decided to use an Allen organ in the performance, and requested that one be installed within a week. The monumental task, which

Mingling with guests such as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Nelson Rockefeller, they listened as E. Power Briggs – the most famous organist of the era – played the Allen organ to rave reviews. In the weeks following the gala, several more high-profile concerts were held in the Philharmonic Hall – and all used the Allen organ. Later, Colombia Records released a record of the performances. The success of these events helped launch the Allen Organ Company onto the national level. But as Jerome continued to strive to create newer and better products, it would be a high-profile invention that would eventually allow Allen Organ to make its mark on a global scale.

The First Digital Computer Organ In 1969, the Allen Organ Company made perhaps its biggest – and ultimately most fateful – decision. Realizing that analog computer technology would eventually become obsolete, the company entered into an agreement with the Autonetics Division of the North American Rockwell Corporation to develop the world’s first digital organ. Rockwell, which had already been building circuit technology for the military and space application, would handle the “tech” side of development, while
INNOVATION. FUNCTION. ELEGANCE. Let the beauty we love be what we do.
Allen Organ was in charge of the “organ” side. This collaboration resulted in the introduction of the Allen Digital Computer Organ in early 1971. Revealed at a press party at New York City’s Hotel Waldorf Astoria, the organ was instantly recognized as a monumental breakthrough in the music industry. Because of its unique ability to accurately reproduce the sound of windblown pipes, the Allen Digital Organ helped turn the Allen Organ Company into the dominant player in the church organ field. As sales of the organ skyrocketed, the invention was even named “one of the best 100 new products of the year” by Industrial Research magazine – marking the first time in history that a musical instrument was honored with such as an award. Years ahead of its time, the technology used in the Allen Digital Computer Organ was eventually licensed to many large instrument producers, including companies in Japan and Europe. Later, this technology became known as “digital sampling”, and ultimately morphed into and was developed for mass-produced consumer products such as compact discs. The Allen Digital Computer Organ, and the subsequent licensing of its technology, catapulted the Allen Organ Company into the global market. In recognition of the incred-

Spring Valley TAVE RN WRITTEN BY CATHY KILEY
The Spring Valley Inn was one of the popular go-to places when we first moved to the Lehigh Valley but it had been many years since I visited what is now called Ye Olde Spring Valley Tavern. Owners Warren and Donna Walters as well as Frank and Kim McCartney reopened the tavern in 2014, changing the name but maintaining much of the old charm. The outside of the stone building has a new paint job and the cheery dining room is quaint with red accents, white linens and beautifully refinished original wooden floors. This place has a lot of character and is located just off the beaten path in Saucon Valley.

I was so-o-o-o relieved to learn that they would pair me up with one of their in-house professional kitchen designers. He designed the whole space and helped me choose everything in it to make sure it all flowed together.
What’s your kitchen saying?
Ye Olde As we walked through the outdoor dining spots on our way inside, I stopped to listen to the trout jumping in the fish ladder along the walkway. The trout were recently moved from their larger abode because a few hungry Blue Herons had discovered a free meal – a situation soon to be rectified by the clever placement of a protective covering atop the freshly stocked, spring-fed pond. The spring emerges from below the building and maintains a constant 51 degree temperature. This is perfect for the trout which continue to be a mainstay on the menu here.

The tavern is a literal trout-fest.
The building that houses Ye Olde Spring Valley Tavern has been around since about 1806 and because it was very secluded, it was a popular joint during prohibition. Nowadays, locals flock to the bar to enjoy tasty food and good company in a friendly fun spot. When I was a little girl, my grandparents lived above a bar called The Crystal Inn located in Old Bridge, New Jersey. I will never forget the way that bar smelled. It held a wonderful aroma of whiskey, root beer, leather and beer.

For some reason, my senses perked up when I entered the bar here. It smelled just like grandma’s, minus the cornmeal on the shuffleboard. It echoed of good times with many taps drained dry by friendly revelers. Brittany and Sam were our servers in the dining room. We ordered a bottle of Line 39 Pinot Noir from their moderately priced wine list. We were very pleased with this choice of wine which was served at a perfect temperature. We started with a couple of appetizers. I ordered the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms which were buttery and very good while Tom enjoyed very fresh Smoked Trout served with sliced onions and mushrooms with a Horseradish Sauce (served on the side by request). Both appetizers were very generous and tasty starters. Oyster Stew and French Onion Soups are on the menu in addition to five salads including an interesting Trio Kale Salad; a traditional Caesar; a Spinach or Caprese Salad. Top any salad with grilled chicken, shrimp, crab or smoked trout for a small upcharge. Other appetizers include Bacon wrapped scallops, clams casino, shrimp cocktail or a sampler. Kim McCartney stopped by our table to chat and said that flowers and herbs were soon to be planted surrounding the al fresco dining gazebo and water fountains which will be up and running just in time

Ye Olde for the warmer weather. She also noted that one of the original chefs from the Spring Valley Inn, Bobby Martin, returned to the kitchen after completion of lengthy renovations. She also noted that popular Lehigh Valley magician Joe Keppel stops by the Tavern to entertain on Saturday nights making it a perfect destination to bring the kids along for dinner. Since Ye Olde Spring Valley Tavern boasts a trout pond, we of course opted for fresh trout which the kitchen will prepare anyway you like it – sauteed or broiled. You may enjoy it simply with lemon or opt for the fish to be topped with Brie and fresh herbs; stuffed with crabmeat; Meuniere with mushrooms, lemon and dry white wine; Amandine with butter and almonds; trout with shrimp or trout and filet mignon. The tavern is a literal trout-fest. Tom enjoyed his Trout Amandine and my Trout Meuniere was delicious. The trout could not be fresher and the steamed asparagus and carrots sides were al dente and perfect with the fish.

Not in the mood for trout? Shrimp, scallops, crab cakes and broiled haddock are all on the menu. A broiled seafood combo, lobster tail or surf and turf may whet your whistle while landlubbers will find interesting meat choices including four veal preparations, steak and chicken. There is

Create your own pizza or enjoy one of their many choices of club sandwiches and wraps or hot sandwiches including Beef or Chicken Cheesesteaks; Spring Valley Crab cake, Burger, Reuben or French Dip. The bar was packed with people eating tavern choices while catching up on basketball games during March Madness. Most desserts are made in-house and those available that night were Red Velvet Cake, Tiramisu, Chocolate Mousse Layer Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake, Apple or Cherry Pie which Tom and I decided to try. Freshwater Fish
Panfish
Trout
Panfish encompasses several different types of fish, including Sunnys, Crappies, and Bluegills. These fish are usually the easiest fish in a pond to catch, and are pretty tasty as well. You can find them by the banks of the pond, near docks, and by fallen trees. Also look for circular depressions in the sand, this sometimes indicates fish beds.
Trout, caught just hours before eating is often said to be the best fish meal you will ever have. Usually found in streams or larger ponds and lakes, trout are not too difficult to catch. Look for pools and ripples behind rocks in rivers. This is where trout will be waiting for your tasty worm to float by.

Bass
Walleye
Fishing for catfish is fun. They fight hard, are plentiful and taste great on the dinner table. Catfish are often willing biters, too, and can be readily caught from the bank as well as from a boat using a simple bait rig. Catfish can thrive in many water systems, from shallow, warm ponds to fast rivers.
The best way to catch bass is to beat it at its own game of hide and seek. Bass love to hide in obvious places, such as docks, structures and other obstacles in the water, so try there first. Or, check out locations where the water or the plants change, for example, where rocks meet sand.
Walleye are a bit tougher to catch, but the taste is worth the challenge. Usually found dwelling at the bottom of lakes and streams, walleye can be best caught in the early morning and late evening hours.
Their meat is not as flaky or white as some others but has very little fishy taste. Catfish are high in protein, low in fat and a good source of essential vitamins and minerals so try to avoid frying it, try broiling instead.
A real freshwater delicacy, walleye are tasty and easy to filet. Can the virus be transmitted by any means other than by a mosquito? Yes. The virus can be transmitted sexually between partners. So far, we have only seen documented cases of men transmitting the virus to their partners. It is also very likely that it can be transmitted by blood, but there have not yet been any confirmed blood transfusion transmission cases in the United States.
Zika Virus
When and where did it originate? It can be traced back to first appearing in Uganda in 1947, and there weren’t any human cases until several years after that. For around 50 years, it was primarily confined to a narrow belt in Africa. It didn’t leave that area until 2013, when it was found in French Polynesia.

WRITTEN BY CEZANNE COLVIN
If the virus has been around for so long, why are we only paying attention to it now? Zika is a geographic disease that was outside of our general sphere. The big impact came in May 2015, when the virus was first found in humans in Brazil. All of a sudden, we were talking about a country that has over 200 million people in it – from there, it spread rapidly in our hemisphere.
Ever since the first headline of a rapidly spreading virus hit news channels and Twitter feeds, all we’ve been worried about is Zika – especially with mosquito season right around the corner. We chatted with Dr. Jeffrey Jahre, Chief of Infectious Disease and the Senior Vice-President of Medical and Academic Affairs at St. Luke’s University Health Network, to learn the facts, protective measures How do you know if you’ve been infected? we can take, and just how concerned we should be. Is there a test? Yes. You can take a blood test. What is the Zika virus? The Zika virus is an arbovirus, or arthropod-borne virus, which means it is transmitted by insects – primarily mosquitoes.
The symptoms of the Zika virus resemble several other diseases, and are usually not the type of symptoms that will land you in a hospital.
50 MAY 2016
How long does the Zika virus stay in your system? Research indicates that the virus lasts longer in certain tissues such as seminal fluid. Males who had definite or suspected Zika are advised to use birth control methods for 6 months. It is also advised that all individuals who have traveled to areas with active mosquito-borne transmission of Zika – even if they don’t have symptoms – use birth control methods for 8 weeks. What are the symptoms and effects? Four out of 5 people with the Zika virus won’t even know that they have it. The symptoms of the Zika virus resemble several other diseases, and are usually not the type of symptoms that will land you in a hospital. If you do show symptoms, they’re going to be relatively mild: fever, rash, muscle aches, and bloodshot eyes.

Zika fants infected with the virus before birth, such as defects of the eye, hearing deficits, and impaired growth. Zika may also have effects that aren’t readily apparent in a newborn, but might appear later that are unknown at this time. What role does global warming play with viruses like Zika? Diseases that would be normally be confined to the tropics because of factors that favor hot, moist climates might end up leaving these geographical zones as those climates expand. Are we going to see a local outbreak of Zika? The prediction is that this lack of domestic transference is not going to last. We are entering mosquito season, and the range of these mosquitoes has increased. We’re going to see many more people returning from abroad with Zika, and the overwhelming likelihood is that the “right” mosquito will bite the “right” person who has the virus and end up transmitting it to someone else within the United States. However, we have better mosquito control and a wider use of screens, windows, and air conditioning than countries like Brazil, not to mention a winter season. We are unlikely to see the same ongoing spread that other countries are facing. How can people avoid the virus and avoid spreading the virus? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a map of established countries with the Zika virus. If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, avoid those areas. If you must go, or if you are of childbearing age – remember that 50 percent of pregnancies are all unplanned – it’s very important that you use EPA-

registered mosquito repellant and at least one form of birth control. When you return home, wear mosquito repellant for three weeks because you may be at risk of being a potential vector if you are carrying the virus. The mosquitos that spread Zika are primarily day-biting mosquitos, and they tend to bread in areas with stagnant water. Do not leave tires or similar objects out in the yard that can collect rainwater and serve as breeding pools, and avoid bodies of still water. How long until a vaccine will be available? Not for a year and a half or longer. While it’s likely that a vaccine will be in trial by the end of the year, we will still need at least one more year to discover if the vaccine is effective before it would be promulgated for widespread use.

Marine WRITTEN BY BRYAN HAY
Growing up near New Hope and Washington Crossing on the Delaware River, Gary Wimmer has never strayed too far from the water. With a hint of warm spring in the air, Wimmer, who has sold and serviced boats for most of his life, is getting ready for another season greeting people who are considering their first boat or bringing winterized boats out of storage for loyal customers ready for another summer of recreation on the water. In mid-March, Wimmer and his staff at Highway Marine – just north of Quakertown – were preparing 35 boats for the truck ride to the Greater Philadelphia Boat Show, a yearly pre-spring rite that marks the beginning of Wimmer’s new sales season.

“It’s a five-day process to get all the boats selected, cleaned and prepared for the show,” said Wimmer, president of Highway Marine, an inland port of boats and watercraft for all uses on Route 309 that has helped fulfill the nautical dreams of landlubbers for nearly 40 years. And there’s no rest after the Philadelphia show as Highway Marine prepared for its own annual spring show later that month.

Although he’s considering retiring soon and turning the business over to his son, Dustin, Wimmer still enjoys the interaction with customers emerging from their winter slumber who have made a decision to spend discretionary income on a recreational item they may have long dreamed about. Highway Marine opened in 1977 in an old fruit stand that was converted into a boat business, about a mile north of its present location, after Wimmer decided to start his own enterprise after years managing a boat dealership in Trenton, N.J. In 1987, when Highway Marine outgrew that location, it moved south to its present spot, a sprawling 30,000-square-foot showroom that displays up to 35 boats, a warehouse and an 18-bay repair shop on 16 acres in Richland Township. “We like to say that our facilities are built for and designed to deliver the excitement of a boat show experience every day,” Wimmer said.

Traditionally, the busy season for Wimmer and his crew is early spring through the end of September. After that, the business turns toward picking up boats for winterization, which lasts through Christmas, and purchasing new inventory for spring. “I’ve boated my entire life,” Wimmer said. “I grew up down the road from a small boat dealership in Titusville, N.J., and sold canoes and worked on outboard motors. I’ve always loved boats and boating. I’ve never gotten it out of my system. It’s never left me.” Wimmer, who operates the business with his ex-wife, Sarah, has navigated through some rough economic seas, including a glut of used boats on the market, gas rationing in the 1970s and recessions that discouraged potential customers from splurging on a boat. “We’ve seen everything that could be possibly dished out,” he said. “For us to have made it this far in a discretionary-income business, we’re pretty proud of that. Nobody has 16 acres and showroom and facility like we have here. You have to go a long

Wimmer said Highway Marine is on smoother waters these days, “but we don’t know if it’ll come to where it was before this last recession. It remains to be seen, but we feel strongly about what we started.” For Wimmer, it’s time to start deciding when to retire and turn the operation over to his son, who’s been learning the business at his side for the past three years. “I just think the most satisfaction given me is the ability to survive in hard times, thrive in good times and enjoy what I’ve always loved to do and that’s boat,” he said. “No matter what happens, I don’t plan on stopping what I love to do,” he said. “I’ll be on a fishing boat in the Florida Keys or out on a lake somewhere in Pennsylvania. I still feel like a kid out exploring the Delaware River.” For more information about Highway Marine, please visit its website at highwaymarine.com.

The arts have power. Films and plays can bring us to tears – whether through comedy or tragedy. Photographs and paintings can hold us transfixed by their colors, composition, even their subjects. And playwright William Congreve knew that “Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak.”

Healing The arts also have power to help with one’s healing process – and that’s exemplified by Heather Rodale, founder of Healing Through the Arts, a not-for-profit organization based in Allentown.
Bad news About 10 years ago, Rodale was diagnosed with intermediate melanoma. Therapeutic surgery had left physical scars on her face and neck – but her psyche was also scarred, by a jumble of depressing thoughts. Will the cancer come back? If it does, will it spread? How long will I live? Will I ever be normal again? Mix in the pressures of being a single mother of four, the necessity of frequent medical tests and the tension of waiting for results, and it’s easy to understand why Rodale slid into deep depression. She hired a life coach to help her get through the experience, and a simple question – “What brings you joy?” – was the catalyst for Rodale’s healing process. (It’s important to distinguish between curing and healing. “Curing” involves medication, treatment and external intervention; “healing” is an internal process, one that brings harmony to mind, body and spirit.)
Fighting back Rodale’s answer was just as simple: she found joy in expressive art. “I realized that, although I could not control the cancer, I could control the art I created, and my interactions with it.” For Rodale, some of those art forms were music, photography, and poetry. There are other modes, of course, but the key is to find something that appeals to you.
62 MAY 2016
The effects of expressive art can be increased optimism; less boredom and anxiety; reduced stress; better communication; and better response to treatment. And while that may sound like a bit of New Age woo-woo, Dr. Lee B. Riley, MD, network chairman, Department of Oncology, St. Luke's University Health Network, says, “Available data support the concept,” he said. “Exploring the arts can be therapeutic for cancer patients.”
N OW O P E N M O N DAYS
He added that expressive art can benefit doctors, too. The amateur jewelry maker produced over 500 glass pendants for cancer survivors who participated in last year’s Women's 5K Classic in Allentown.

“[Jewelry-making] is a way for me to re-energize after a stressful day,” he said. “When I’m being creative, it gets my mind off other things.”
Spreading the word Rodale took a sabbatical from her job as vice president, community outreach - arts, education, and wellness at Rodale, Inc. to pursue her journey of healing through art. She found that there was an enormous amount of relevant techniques and ideas on the Internet, but not in one place. “That inspired me to found Healing Through the Arts,” she said, “a place where those who are healing find strength, hope and inspiration through the arts.” Its companion website, www.htta.org, provides links to dozens of facilities throughout the Lehigh Valley arts community, including everything from radio and theater to music and

HTTA’s key project is the “Hope and Healing” art show, a juried event for high school and college students. Held each year since 2011, the program showcases original, inspirational art that is later donated to over 15 local healthcare facilities. This year’s winners included: • Hazel Ferguson, Lehigh Valley Charter Arts High School • Olivia King, Salisbury High School • Gwendolyn Stark, Lehigh Valley Charter Arts High School • Alyssa Tauber, Maryland Institute College of Art • Second Place – Jessica Marzari, Kutztown University “In addition, there were 17 Community Award winners,” Rodale said. While the main winners are selected by professionals, “Community Awards are selected by anyone who wants to sponsor the $200 prize,” she explained. “Half of the money goes to the winning artist; the other half goes toward funding our event. Sponsors can also name their awards to honor someone.” Healthcare professionals attend the exhibition and create “wish lists” of the art they want. After the event, the selected pieces are mounted in various healthcare facilities. “You won’t

find them in hospital lobbies,” Rodale said. “Instead, they’re hung in waiting rooms and other locations where patients spend time.” Rodale added that those images are generally of nature scenes, or other themes to evoke hope and inspiration. Do they help? Dr. Riley offers some anecdotal evidence. “Last year, I met with one of my surgical patients in the OR’s staging area, and she started discussing the art that was hanging there. She could have asked me many questions about the procedure, but the art seemed to make her a bit calmer.”
More to come HTTA has another exciting project on deck. “Meditations for Healthcare and Beyond” will combine student artwork with the music of Jim Brickman to create 10 three-minute video segments (and a 30-minute continuous loop) for use in 160 doctors’ offices. “They’ll be played on waiting room TVs,” Rodale said, “instead of news programs or other daytime shows” to help reduce patients’ stress levels.

“A clinic in Cleveland uses Brickman’s music with no visuals,” she added. “But when our meditations are finished, Brickman will present them to that clinic.” Using the arts for personal healing isn’t limited just to cancer patients. Anyone with a chronic condition – one that can be only managed, not cured – might benefit from it. “Whenever you’re creating something – even if it’s just working on an adult coloring book – it will take your mind off your worries for a while, so you can focus on something else,” she concluded.
How to Help Healing Through the Arts is a 501 (c) (3) organization that relies on tax deductible donations for funding, and on volunteers to support its programs. Contact HTTA president Heather Rodale at heather@htta.org for more information.

PHOTOGRAPHY APHY YT TIPS TIP The family portrait is one image that will be displayed and cherished for many years to come. Be creative and follow these tips to compose a fun and beautiful shot.
GROUP IN GROUPS
EXPERIMENT WITH ANGLES
When photographing a large family, get people to stand together but in groups. Tall, younger people at the back, older people at the center and children at the front. For a casual effect don’t have any strict, ‘short to tall’ order to make it more natural-looking.
These kinds of photos are interesting and conversation pieces. A great technique to try is to get on the ground and look up with your subjects standing over you. You will need to use flash to light up the subjects’ faces against a bright sky. Get the subjects to tip their heads down so you aren’t shooting up their noses.
CATCH A CLOSE-UP
DRESS TO IMPRESS
Close-ups are a great way to convey emotion. Take two people who are close – a parent and child, for example – and get them to talk to each other as closely as possible. Use a macro or standard lens and crop closely. Wait for the perfect moment; it can be a smile or a look then take the photograph.
Have everyone to wear shades of the same color or the same type of clothes for an interesting effect. However, try to avoid the overly harsh look of reds. Also experiment with the mixing and matching of colors for a more relaxed look.
