It’s brief, blissful, and bittersweet all in one breath. By now, all of the blossom trees have stretched and yawned, exhaling creamy pink and white flowers for their annual evanescent bloom. There is a particular span of these trees behind the Bethlehem library, immediately visible as you cross the Fahy Bridge, that have a mesmerizing hold over the entire block during their stay. Each pastel bud is a wink and a nod—an assurance—that blustery mornings and freezing temperatures are behind us. They are the ultimate harbinger of flip flop weather and laissez-faire afternoons. The blossoms are here, and then just as quickly, they aren’t. That’s ephemera.

“It’s like trying to catch running water in a bucket,” a friend of mine was telling me the other day. The second you catch the water, it’s no longer running. It’s impossible to hold on to it—all you can do is watch it and let it carry out its lifespan. That is, of course, the nature of this world: we can’t hold on to anything for too long, if even at all. Perhaps it isn’t the blossoms themselves that leave me feeling both grateful and wistful, but that their transient beauty and fragility is no different than the same delicate and fleeting thread that connects us all to each other and each moment. Happy Mother’s Day to mothers, who know this truth, and who understand when to nurture it and hold it tightly—as well as when to let it go—better than anyone else.

Brewer WRITTEN BY CÉZANNE COLVIN
According to the Brewers Association, the majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a craft brewer, and the Lehigh Valley is no exception—consider HiJinx, Fegley’s Brew Works, Two Rivers, Funk, Yergey, Golden Avalanche, and Saucony Creek, to name more than a few. With such a local level of fermented fervor, it’s likely that you’ve found yourself sitting on a stool in one of these taprooms, pint in hand, perhaps wondering if you could parlay your affinity for stouts into a career as a brewer. I talked to Weyerbacher Brewing Company’s brewmaster and lead brewer to find out what it takes to create great beer for a living. Hint: one of them describes the job as “half plumber and half janitor” and the other almost fell off the equivalent of a two-story building while on the job.
If you’re looking to drink on the job, this isn’t it.

Meet Chris Wilson Weyerbacher Brewmaster With a degree in physics, Chris was working on liquid crystal displays at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory until he and his wife headed to the West Coast for her to attend graduate school. A year of being unable to find work in California later, Chris announced that he was going to get a job in a brewery—two weeks later, he was brewing beer at Bayhawk Ales in Irvine. “I was actually brewing by myself after 14 days, which isn’t ideal,” he recalls, laughing. “But they were desperate!” After literally getting his feet wet in the brewery world, he completed his formal education at the Master Brewers Program at UC Davis before returning to the East Coast and scoring an opportunity at Weyerbacher, where he has been for more than a decade.

Meet Matt Snyder Weyerbacher Lead Brewer and Pilot System Manager As a home cook and DIY enthusiast, Matt’s interest in craft beer naturally led him to start home brewing. After 11 years of retail management, he decided it was time for a career change to either cooking or brewing. Tired of working nights and weekends, cooking in a restaurant was out, so he completed a brewing program through the American Brewers Guild in Vermont and a five-week apprenticeship at Weyerbacher. With his foot in the door, he was hired to work on the packaging line, and quickly worked his way up to become the lead brewer.

Brewer First of all, are there any misconceptions about breweries that you’d like to clear up? Chris: The big one is that a lot of people think it’s all fun and games— like we just sit around and drink beer all day. Outside of taking a sip to check for quality, we don’t drink at all during the day for safety reasons, and because we don’t want to mess anything up. If you’re looking to drink on the job, this isn’t it.
What credentials do you need to be a brewer? Chris: To brew at Weyerbacher, you need to have completed a program at one of the brewing schools, such as UC Davis, Institute of Brewing and Distilling, Siebel Institute, or American Brewers Guild. Matt: At some breweries, you can work your way up, but certification is important—it ensures you understand why you’re doing what you’re doing.
Do you need a strong science background? Chris: You don’t necessarily need a degree in biochemistry to become a brewer, but you need to have the capacity to learn some of these concepts—there’s complex biochemistry that occurs during the brewing process. Prerequisites for certification programs include precalculus and a solid science foundation, like college-level chemistry, biology, and physics.
What’s the biggest challenge of making beer? Chris: The customers, and their desire for constant change. Now, as a customer, I have the same desires, so I understand. But there’s definitely pressure to always be changing. Customers don’t want to drink the same beer every time they come—the idea of making one beer your flagship beer is changing. You can’t rest on your laurels. You have to be on the ball. Matt: We do 25-30 styles of beer per year, so scheduling is a challenge. We schedule the brews and communicate with the entire staff—sales, marketing, and executives.
What’s something most people wouldn’t know about working in a brewery? Chris: It’s extremely dangerous. There are high-pressure water systems, steam, chemicals, and a lot of things that could literally kill

Brewer you if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you just walk blindly into a brewery, you’ll probably get really hurt. It’s also difficult to get a consistent product, and going from a home brew scale to a production scale is complicated. Even if you start with the same materials each time, you’re not guaranteed to get the same product every time. Your malt, your water temperatures, and your yeast health are all crucial to what your end product is going to be like. Matt: There is a ton of CO2 in the brewery. If you do something wrong, you could very quickly get yourself into a situation where there is no air to breathe. Burns are another concern—180 degree liquids and boil overs are no joke.

Chris: Almost always whatever is new, but probably Line Street. It’s a German Pilsner with an American spin, so we put some American hops in it. Matt: Hop Rotation #2, an East Coast IPA—it’s hazy with a decent mouthfeel.
What’s the craziest thing that has happened on the job?
OLD WORLD INFLUENCE NEW WORLD ATMOSPHERE
Chris: The brewery was robbed! I was working by myself late at night, and it was the middle of summer, so I had the doors open. I saw a guy’s foot sticking out from behind a stack of beer, and he was stealing a stack of copper.

Matt: I almost fell off a scissor lift. I took hardware off of a pressurized vessel—it wasn’t supposed to be pressurized, but I didn’t check. There was a tank that was pressurized and I took a piece of hardware off. Well, it went whizzing past my head, and I was 25 feet off the ground on a scissor lift.
What’s the best part of the job? Chris: It’s a fun industry. Everyone is working together to make a product that I really like—and I like beer more than just drinking it. It’s something so simple in appearance, but there are so many details. Matt: I love the creative process. Brainstorming with the other guys and coming up with new recipes and processes is kind of an art. It’s great when you strike gold with an off-thewall recipe.
Quality service. Electrified.
What’s the least glamorous part of the job? Chris: Cleaning. It’s hot, and you’re always doing it. We all clean the oors and the bathrooms here. When you’re a brewer, you’re also half plumber and half janitor. Matt: Cleaning. Four words: purging fermenters of yeast.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a brewer? Chris: Go work for a brewery in any capacity so you can see what it’s really

But through the temptations and desire to eat well, you might miss the subtle reminders that Café the Lodge is much more than a place to enjoy a chef-inspired meal. If you take a moment and look up from your plate in the dining area, you’ll see why. Portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Robin Williams on the colorful walls symbolize that mental illness is not a barrier to success and can be overcome. They are the guiding principles that uplift the people who work at the restaurant as they seek hope and a path to recovery.

Café the Lodge also offers breakfast and lunch catering for a 10-person minimum. Lodge residents are not required to work at the cafe, but it’s always an option for them when jobs become available. “The food that comes from the kitchen is simply fresh and amazing—the egg scrambles, the homemade muffins and award-winning soups, and the burgers and paninis,” he says. “Everything is well-priced.” Situated in thriving South Bethlehem, Café the Lodge shares its neighborhood with an already energetic fine dining and cultural district, which complements the music and visual arts programs that are open to the public. Cafe- the Lodge Lodge has been a lifesaver. “I was doing drugs and a lot of selfmedicating,” says Greg Dutt, who came to the Lodge last fall after hearing about its programs while staying at the Hope House in Bethlehem Township, which supports adults who are in crisis due to mental illnesses. “It’s been such a blessing to work here, a new beginning for me with real options and a chance to succeed,” says Greg, a barista who serves coffee and prepares lattes and cappuccinos. “What’s important to me is the ability to interact with fellow members of the community.” Originally from Wind Gap, Greg says Café the Lodge has taught him the independence and responsibility that come from maintaining and renting an apartment, all while learning valuable food service and hospitality skills. “The staff here, they really have a heart and can look into your face and know what’s going on,” Greg says. “I’m now drug-free and clear-headed. I got over the hump, thanks to the staff, and am already working to earn my GED.” Exzeria Rehm says the Lodge provided her with a supportive, non-judgmental refuge as she struggled with transgender issues.

The message to the community and people in need is clear, Ian says. “This is a powerful program for people who are invested in it and willing to learn new skills,” he says. “Like in any job, you’re expected to come to work on time. ! whoa I am awesome. At least, this is what I’ve just been told. It’s moments after the Supergirl class at Sweat Like a Girl has ended. In the past hour, I have performed an unfathomable amount of burpees and squats, consumed 40 ounces of water, and, perhaps most importantly, been told how awesome I am by Heather Gidusko, the gym’s owner.

Sweat Like a Girl A LEHIGH VALLEY TRADITION FOR OVER 85 YEARS
Here’s the thing: I didn’t want to like burpees, but Heather kept yelling about how great they are—and I started to agree with her. If she likes them so much, maybe I kind of like them too. There’s something special happening in this little gym in Nazareth. Located in an old auto garage and stocked with bicycles snagged from Craigslist, there’s tangible proof present that it’s not what you have, it’s what you make of it, and Heather has managed to capture positivity and motivation inside its walls. Perhaps this is why some 400 women eschew heated pools, saunas, and state-of-the-art equipment offered at other gyms: they’re here because Sweat Like a Girl is where they can be awesome.

Don’t Forget! Flowers & Gifts for Mom, Prom, Pro & Grads! A former Eagles cheerleader, the 41-year-old’s energy almost maniacal, and it’s definitely contagious. With a little tough love and a lot of enthusiasm, she is the brains behind Sweat Like a Girl, a no-boys-allowed gym that specializes in group fitness. Heather retired her pompoms in 2001 to start a family, but didn’t lose sight of her passion for fitness. In fact, motherhood only evolved her perception of it. “As moms of younger children, we tend to get caught up in being a mom 24/7,” Heather, a mother of three, says. That’s why the gym offers babysitting during morning class hours during the week. “Moms are able to get out of the house and focus on themselves for an hour,” she says. “When they do that, they feel awesome, which will only lead to them being a better mom who has strength in her mind and body for the rest of the day.”

With a degree in kinesiology from West Chester University, she dove headfirst into being a fitness instructor at big-name health clubs while focusing on her new role as a mother, but she soon realized that the megagyms just weren’t her jam. “I got really tired of the corporate scene, and I wanted to make more of an impact on a smaller level,” she says. “I wanted to create a community.”

All she needed was an opportunity. It happened in the form of a tiny room at Lehigh Valley Sports Academy on Race Street in Allentown. The room came to house Heather’s spirited delivery of a workout, which, well, worked out: she quickly racked up a

“A squat is a squat is a squat,” she says. “The movement is the same everywhere. If it’s just a job to you, no one is going to come do your version of a squat.” After a brief stumble when she discovered that the building was going to be sold, she looked everywhere for a spot and finally settled on her current digs: the industrial-style garage. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is her commitment to creating a safe space for women to work on their fitness.

“I just feel really comfortable teaching women and I love being able to empower women,” Heather says. “Here, you don’t have to worry about anyone approaching you after class in a weird way or eyeing you up when you bend over. A lot of women feel uncomfortable in a gym setting, and they can just exist here and be comfortable.” Heather was the first person to open a gym in the Lehigh Valley that offered pole fitness, a cardio and strength workout. While mainstream exposure to pole fitness is often that of the entertaining and sexual variety, the athletic ability and stamina required to perform pole-related feats cannot be denied. In 2016, an official application was made to the International Olympic Committee to recognize pole as a sport, and competitions such as the World Pole Sport Championship, U.S. Pole Federation Championship, and Pole Masters Cup Championship take place today. While internationally, pole fitness is not just for
women—China’s 2007 National Pole Dancing competition was won by a man—at Sweat Like a Girl, it’s always ladies’ night. “I knew I was going to be up against some stereotypes regarding the poles, but I didn’t let that stop me—I knew in my heart that offering pole fitness was a great way to offer an incredible form of fitness yet to be offered here,” Heather says. “Pole fitness is an amazing total body workout, and we have a great community of women who applaud each other in our pole classes.”

There's always a moment of breathlessness when you meet someone and they tell you that they play music, as was the case when I met Pentley Holmes one summer outside of a nowdefunct Easton music venue.

You see, once they say that, you have no choice but to ask if you can hear something—and that first listen is like the moment you decide to take a leap into a lake that you're sure is colder than you can imagine. You press play and you plead to the fates, “Please don't let this be horrible.” When I got my hands on Pentley Holmes’ record, I pressed play, I pleaded, and a few moments later, I was rewarded with Rip Out My Heart. Recorded live in a studio, there's a blend of soul-pop and folk-rock in his original material that feels singular to his voice—the culmination of a lifetime of varied influences. It’s the kind of album that makes you want to roll the windows down and drive along Route 611. My first true experience with his music was seeing him perform with his band, The Lucid Dreamers, at Pearly Baker’s. A three-piece, Pentley oscillates between rhythm and lead guitar while his band manages a balance between a laid-back groove and completely cutting loose. Speaking with Pentley, it’s clear his music is a personal extension of himself. Even his speaking voice is slow and deliberate; he’s never in a hurry. I recently had the opportunity to sit with Pentley and talk about his relationship with music. Last time I saw you, we were talking about the first show you ever went to, which was actually a performance by Bethlehem natives Slingshot Dakota. I know you’d already been making music at that point, but how did that change the way you thought about music? It was the first time I’d actually seen live music. At that time in 2005, I was

actually making rap beats. I had always known sampled sounds, but I’d never experienced them being created. Slingshot Dakota was the only band around with a woman, so I heard female vocals blending with male vocals and thought, “What is that?” I actually heard it before I saw it and so I went over and thought, “This is awesome.” It made me want to create real music.

You started approaching music differently, but did it also change how you heard music? It changed it a lot, actually. People grow up listening to a lot of the same music. For me, it was rap. I’d always wondered how sound was created and, once I figured it out, I wanted to start listening to actual bands.

Pentley Holmes with the scene and helped me explore and figure out what kind of music and sounds I liked. Talk me through the process of going from building beats from samples to writing music and melodies around chord progressions. The thing with beats is that you can mess around all day and you’ll come up with cool stuff, so it was difficult. But the songs kind of write themselves over time. The whole process is like you’re just discovering the song. So, tell me about the songs on Rip Out My Heart. There’s a sense that they all come from this place that’s informed by all the genres of music you’ve come to appreciate. The album is about picking yourself up and getting back into the swing of things—a lot of it is about heartache. So, because the songs are really personal to me, they kind of wrote themselves. I never put an extended amount of effort into them because they needed to come out of me. That’s really interesting because I know you recorded it live in a studio, so that immediacy is in the recordings, too. Is that something you did intentionally?

The band was actually playing lots of shows, so I’d bring them the songs as I wrote them. That actually gave me more inspiration to finish the songs. But the songs were well-rehearsed already, so we felt it was best to play them how they’re felt and heard. We tried to capture that.
Standing back and looking at the progress from your first EP to this record, what are your thoughts? Well, I think it’s easy to see the music’s changed. When I first started, I was trying to be that singer-songwriter because I enjoy singing sad songs and I like that kind of music. It’s not because I want to be sad all the time, but you can really express certain emotions that way. Now there are drums and bass, so there’s something that’s a little more upbeat. That leads me to the question I’ve been waiting to ask. You describe yourself as “soul-pop and folk-rock” and I think that’s a perfect way to describe your sound. Where does that come from? When I first started, I considered myself a folk artist. There’s still that influence in there now, but not as much. Then the band started doing soul covers like Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, and I wanted to put a lot of that in there. That’s why soul comes first. I think the soul comes from the way that I sing, but that’s just naturally how I sing. Even when I sing other people’s songs, I still put it in there. It’s been a change, but I’m excited to see where it goes.

Adagio good taste
WRITTEN BY CÉZANNE COLVIN
38 MAY 2017
2017 is an interesting time to be a foodie. Perhaps by popular demand, buzzwords like “artisanal” and “local” have slowly infiltrated almost every menu. Gluten-free options are plentiful, vegan versions are expected, and organic materials are sprinkled across ingredient lists. Portions are often smaller, poetic in composition—with thought given to qualities previously reserved for landscaping: height, accessibility, color, seasonality—and are usually accompanied by an unpronounceable aioli or sriracha-infused dip. Upon a table at most restaurants on any given night, you can probably find something old, something new, something truffled, and something bleu.

There is nothing wrong with this— gastronomical whimsy is one of my top interests. Sometimes, though, you want the familiar, not a plated sonnet. This is Adagio’s niche: all of your favorite treats from the shore without unnecessary fanfare. Somehow, this unfussy approach to food is refreshing, and sometimes exactly what your palate needs, as was the case for me. The menu reads like seafood’s greatest hits: Shrimp Cocktail, Calamari, and Crab Dip to Clam Chowder, Lobster Tails, and Beer-battered Cod. It’s like going to grandma’s house—you know it’s going to be good, and you know you’re going to be full. The restaurant itself has taken up residence on Pembroke Road in Bethlehem, where a beloved neighborhood eatery of the past, Lantern Restaurant and Lounge, was once perched. It’s deceptively large, with a banquet facility that can accommodate 150 guests tucked beneath the dining room. It’s worth noting that Adagio is probably one of the cleanest restaurants I’ve ever been in, and despite the white tablecloths present for dinner, the vibe is casual and relaxed. Previously a BYOB establishment, Adagio scored its liquor license at the end of 2016 and now offers a selection of wine, beer, and mixed drinks. There wasn’t a cocktail menu, but I was told that they “can make anything.” Back to the food: for land lovers who got dragged out to a seafood restaurant, there are other options: Peppercorn Strip Steak, Chicken Piccata, or Roasted Vegetables and Linguini. I’m a seafood enthusiast, however, and my eyes immediately stopped on the Calamari. See, Calamari is one of my favorite appetizers. Whether I’m at a pier res-

taurant in San Francisco or a dive bar, if Calamari is on the menu, I always order it. From this repeated exposure, I’ve learned that it is, apparently, easy to mess up. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ended up with rubbery rings or limp and greasy breading. That was certainly not the case here.
It’s like going to grandma’s house—you know it’s going to be good, and you know you’re going to be full.
Adagio’s version was crispy, goldenbrown hoops of cephalopod heaven. It came with three types of sauce: marinara, pesto, and Thai chili. The marinara and pesto were good, but I wouldn’t mind having a stash of the Thai chili sauce in my purse at all times to summon in most of my future eating endeavors. I also appreciated that in an era of tapas and tiny plates, the appetizer was piled high and then a little higher. When it came time for my main course, I went for the Loaded Bacon Wrapped Scallops, partially because they were a special that evening, but mostly because every word in that title is usually indicative of something

delicious and delightfully indulgent. Indeed, it was. The dish was six scallops covered in cheese with crisp bacon veils—the ultimate fisherman’s comfort food. Main courses come with salad and a side, and I got a baked sweet potato. It came with two accoutrements: Old Bay butter and what seemed to be a brown sugar and maple concoction. The Old Bay butter offered a savory bite of sweet potato, but the other option transformed it into a dessert-esque side whose distant cousin was once a vegetable. It was delicious. Seafood is often seen as an extravagant affair, but Adagio keeps it approachable, affordable, and familiar. It’s not over the top, but it doesn’t need to be—it’s that good. Founder Frank Banko Sr. emigrated from Yugoslavia in 1908 and planted his roots in the Lehigh Valley by channeling his entrepreneurial spirit into a soda bottling business, Banko Beverage. After the Prohibition was repealed in 1933, he added Schaefer beer to the company’s repertoire. When he passed away in 1937, he left the business to his son, Frank Banko Jr, who quickly recognized an opportunity in the business of beer. He expanded the company to supply more brews to the Lehigh Valley area with great success, eventually supplying the goods of Miller Brewing Company in 1969 and D.G. Yuengling and Sons in 1988. The partnership with these two major breweries would become the pillars that today hold up Banko Beverage.

Just as Frank Jr. was a successful businessman, he was also a philanthropist.
Did you know the average He gave back to the Lehigh Valley area, donating money to hospitals and schools. His name, which can be seen on hospital wings and athletic fields throughout the Valley, is a testament to how much he gave back. Frank Banko’s name can also be found over the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema, the movie theater at SteelStacks that shows independent and foreign films. In addition to enriching the Valley’s film scene, the Alehouse Cinema also offers another perk: you can wash your popcorn down with beer and wine while you enjoy the show. As a true family business, the company is now under the leadership of its thirdgeneration owner, Frank Jr.’s daughter, Mary Ellen Racz. The staff consists of 75 local employees, ranging from truck drivers to office staff to salespersons. “The culture of customer service, community philanthropy, and sense of family is something that many generations of employees have contributed to over the years,” says Mary Ellen. Just as the business stays within the Banko family, Banko Beverage has also employed generational employees, with the children of current and former employees devoting their own careers to the beer distribution company. An obvious pioneer of the arts, Frank Jr. was integral in forming a Lehigh Valley staple event, Musikfest. “My father helped Musikfest get one of its first sponsors, Stroh’s Brewing Company, and was instrumental in helping Musikfest obtain its liquor license,” says Mary Ellen. To this day, Banko Beverage continues to partner with the ten-day festival, which has become the largest free music festival

Jim Thorpe
Because You Live Here
WRITTEN BY JENNIFER HAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW F. KAZMIERSKI / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
With its stunning location in the Lehigh Gorge, its Victorian architecture, and its rich industrial history, Jim Thorpe regularly makes top 10 lists—among them, the most beautiful small towns and the most romantic places to visit. Tourism has long been a part of the Carbon County seat—aptly nicknamed “Little Switzerland”—but what draws visitors has changed over the years. Originally known as Mauch Chunk (Lenni-Lenape for “sleeping bear”), the borough was founded in 1818 by Josiah White and Erskine Hazard as a company town for the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company (LC&N), a hub for the transport of coal from Summit Hill. The Switchback Gravity Railroad carried coal

Jim Thorpe downhill from the mines to Mauch Chunk, where it could be transported south via the Lehigh Canal. The railroad also attracted tourists, who came to ride it as they would a roller coaster. By the Victorian era, Mauch Chunk was second only to Niagara Falls as a tourist destination. Visitors arrived by train to the station that now hosts the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad. As the reliance on coal and railroads declined, Mauch Chunk’s jobs disappeared and the businesses and tourists left. Looking to turn things around, the town and its neighbor across the river, East Mauch Chunk, agreed to merge and name their new borough Jim Thorpe in honor of the famous Native American athlete. Thorpe’s remains were moved to the town, and a monument was erected in his honor. The renaming did not result in the hoped-for construction of a football hall of fame or a tourism boom. But, slowly and surely, the town regained its pull. The opening of Lehigh Gorge State Park and the D&L Trail brought people who rediscovered the area’s scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Others were drawn by the architecture and history. Less obvious, but perhaps more powerful, was the hard work, belief, and cooperation of the residents and business owners. The Mauch Chunk Opera House is a microcosm of the town, changing with the times through boom, bust, and revival. Built in 1881, the concert hall was a regular stop on the vaudeville circuit. In the 1920s, it became a movie theater and, later, a warehouse. Saved from the wrecking ball in 1975 by the Mauch Chunk Historical Society, the hall underwent restoration work and returned to its theatrical roots, hosting local theater productions. But

by 2003, it needed extensive repairs. That’s when singer-songwriters Vince DeGiosio and Christine McGorryDeGiosio, as well as businessman and gallery owner Daniel Hugos, got involved. They founded JTAMS Productions, leased the building from the Mauch Chunk Historical Society, and began to restore the building to create a premier venue for top touring talent.

The Authority, about 100 members strong, maintains a vibrant website, puts out a visitors guide, organizes several major festivals each year, assists businesses with their own events, and markets the borough as a year-round destination. “All of us want to see the town succeed, and we’re very passionate about our businesses,â€? says JTTA President Jennifer Christman. “Our biggest hurdle is that there is only so much infrastructure to handle the tourists,â€? she says, noting that parking is a premium, particularly on weekends and during events. With that in mind, JTTA is expanding its programming to encourage people to come midweek. This year, it is launching a Third Thursday event, during which shops will be open later and there may be a farmers’ market and other special events. “We want to reach out to our locals,â€? Jennifer says, adding that many of them avoid the town on busy weekends. Locals and visitors will also beneďŹ t from the pedestrian bridge across the Lehigh River, scheduled for completion later this year. The bridge will connect Jim Thorpe to the Weissport section of the D&L Trail. “People will be able to park in Weissport and walk or take their bikes into

Tourism isn’t the only thing growing in Jim Thorpe, which Jennifer says has been welcoming a number of restaurants and new shops. Amy Pienta and her husband, Mitch Hanson, opened Somersault Letterpress last spring in the former Dugan’s General Store on Broadway. Pienta, who grew up in Wilkes-Barre, used to come with her family on day trips to Jim Thorpe. She remembered the town as she and Hanson began to look for a new location for their Las Vegas business.

“I wanted to move somewhere where we could put down roots and be happy for the next 20 years,” Amy says. The couple was quick to act when the 19th-century brick mansion went on the market. After restoring the first floor to its Victorian roots, they opened at their new location, which enabled them to add a retail component to their business. They offer custom-designed letterpress printing, such as wedding invitations, business cards, and birth announcements. The shop features letterpress paper goods, gifts, and stationery— much of it made in-house, in view of the customers. “We expose people to the process behind the products. People realize that there are still makers out there. They get really excited about that,” Amy says. “Jim Thorpe is like a vortex. For a lot of us, it works its charm, and you can’t escape it.”

Students at William Allen High School in Allentown have two fierce women behind them offering encouragement, support, and tough love. Rina Duggan and Eileen Snover are the kind of educators whose efforts may escape headlines, but they’re the ones who change lives by implementing confidence, compassion, and grace. Rina and Eileen are deeply committed to seeing the nearly 3,000 teenagers at Allen flourish, paying close attention to the large percent who face language barriers and difficult home lives.

Rina runs the school’s College and Career Center (CCC), a place students go to figure out their post-high school plans. Upward Bound literacy skills. This is where Eileen Snover comes in. As one of Allen’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers, Eileen works with freshmen and sophomores with limited or no English proďŹ ciency. Before arriving in this country, many of her students either couldn’t attend school, or their education was interrupted due to circumstances beyond their control. Some of the teenagers come from rural farming communities without access to technology—in addition to learning our language, they must also navigate computers for the ďŹ rst time.

“These kids are still learning letters and the sounds they make. That’s the reality,â€? Eileen explains. “Then they go to math, history, and French, trying to make sense of all this language. It really takes a lot of hard work and determination. I believe to the very ďŹ ber of my being we have not just a legal obligation, but a moral obligation, to give these kids the tools to succeed.â€? ESOL students are not immune to the frustrations we all face while learning. Eileen has seen kids give up and stop attending school. She recognizes warning signs and does her best to catch them before dropping out, speaking with them about why their parents wanted to come to the United States. When the students answer, “work; better opportunity; better education,â€? she reminds them the only way to reach any of those goals is to break through the language barrier. “I push them hard because I believe in them—in their potential, skills, and abilities,â€? says Eileen. “I believe in
them even when they don’t believe in themselves. Hopefully it’s enough to carry them through another day.” Eileen implements a golden rule in her classroom: respect. Many of her students come from Spanish-speaking countries and giggle when their teacher practices the language. Making fun of each other, however, is off limits. “I make mistakes in Spanish all the time,” says Eileen. “I don’t care if you laugh at me, but we don’t laugh at each other when someone is trying to say something new in English. The only way we learn is by making mistakes.” Principal Luke recognizes Eileen’s commitment to navigating her ESOL students through obstacles to fulfill their career and college aspirations. He says she spends countless hours making certain her students stay on track and plan for their future. “I’m way more than an educator,” says Eileen. “They come to me with questions or problems with their life, family, boyfriend, or girlfriend. They know I’ll tell them the truth even if it might hurt a little and they know it’s because I care.” Eileen has spent the last four years of her decade-long teaching journey at Allen. The ESOL seniors graduating in June are the same students she began this leg of her career with and it’s going to be tough to say goodbye. With emotion in her voice she prophesied what she’ll tell them as graduation approaches: “‘I love you, but go. It’s not really goodbye.’ I’m proud for them. I’ll tell them, ‘I’m seeing you walk across the stage to get that diploma, so don’t you let me down.’”

Mom held the kite and we all laid on our backs in the field and cuddled around her. I remember looking up at the sky, the kite, and feeling so loved and carefree.”

“My mom was a single parent, worked full time, and then took classes at night, so I was a latchkey kid from age seven on. I know it sounds crazy, but my best memories of my mom were when I was sick. When I was sick, she stopped everything for me. She’d stay home, roll our crazy TV cart into my room, and she would lie down with me. We would watch TV and just be together. Chicken pox week was heaven!”

“I just found some pictures that reminded me of one of my best memories. When I was little, I was so obsessed with Little House on the Prairie that I dressed up like Laura Ingalls Wilders four Halloweens in a row. Driving on a family vacation to Chicago, we passed a log cabin, and I was convinced that was where Laura lived. So while in Chicago, my mom found and bought me a bonnet, and on the way home, we stopped at that same log cabin again. I hopped out, put on my bonnet, and my mom took so many pictures of me—because I was Laura, you know!”
“Every summer, my mom would take my three sisters and me to our mountain house. We would spend our summers there with no cell phones, no working landline, and no television! My mom would call my dad weekly from a payphone, and he would drive up on weekends. Thinking back, she was so brave and resourceful to entertain four children all summer without the comforts of technology. We have the best memories of exploring outside, running through the creek, picking blueberries, and enjoying the summer with family. Now, having four kids of my own, I am in awe of how my mom gave us such amazing summers each year.”
— Jo Ann
, 41, Emmaus
“Some days, my mom sits quietly and intently crochets scarves for her children and grandchildren, not wanting to be a burden. She works year-round because we have a large family and she wants to be sure that every person receives a scarf. Other days, she is
not so demure, and her delusions take over. She can be intolerable. She is convinced her caregiver is scheming ways to drain her life savings, the savings she worked so hard to earn in her 22 years of factory life. She is incoherent as she sobs and wails, asking why her caregiver is so manipulative. My mom is a survivor: she lived through a war, she moved to the US with her husband and new baby, she did not speak the language, and she birthed and raised seven children only to be met with divorce. As unfair as it seems, she is greeted with a new challenge at this stage of her life—Alzheimer’s. She is my mom: I greatly admire her, and I will do anything to protect her.”
— Theresa
, 51, Center Valley
“My mom was from Germany and moved to the United States when she was in her mid-thirties. A great memory I have is of all the German food we had in the house, especially marzipan. The big marzipan bar at Christmas was always the best.”
— Paul
, 47, Coopersburg
“I love when my mom gets me my jammies and then gets me my toys and then puts me to bed and then lays down with me and then kisses my cheek and then kisses my toes.”
— Jonathan

And I was curious, so I asked my kids, Alec and Tessa (ages 14 and 10), for their memories of me. “You come to every single event we have and cheer.” “Actually, you yell. A lot. You are so loud.” “Yeah, she does yell a lot. The only time she never really yells is when we go to Lake Placid in the summer. She never yells there. Not once.” “Yeah, not once.” “Hey! I am sitting right here!” I say. “See, there you go, yelling. You yell when you are happy and when you are angry and when you are frustrated and when you are excited. Unless we see your face, it can be very confusing—but I don’t know what I would do without you.” “Me either.” “It would be really quiet, though.” “Yeah, really quiet.”
