It’s important to look for things and people to love whenever and wherever we can. This has been a difficult year, nationwide and worldwide. It has been a year of fear, violence, and hatred. Voices have been silenced, rights have been stripped, lives have been lost. Many of us have been privileged enough to be sheltered from the worst effects, instead only being exposed to these tragedies through news headlines and stories. In these times where sometimes it’s difficult to see the good, I think of what Mr. Rogers once said: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” In this issue, you will find a story about a husband and wife team of physician assistants, Corinne and Brett Feldman, who spearheaded bringing medical care to the area’s homeless population. A story about Dr. Ranjan Sachdev, who has been pioneering innovative stem cell treatments to help patients with pain. A story about Connexions Gallery, which has created a creative sanctuary for the community. If you look, just a little, you’ll find that the Lehigh Valley is full of helpers. Here’s to another 100 issues, but more than that, here’s to a community that chooses love over hatred and fear, and that is always looking for a way to help its neighbors.

BECAUSE YOU LIVE HERE
Easton Public Market BY BRYAN HAY
10
SEPTEMBER 2O17
A couple from Williams Township had just finished enjoying a wood-fired artisan pizza and craft beer at Scratch after they picked up pasture-raised beef tenderloin for the weekend grill from Dundore & Heister. Also tucked into their shopping bag was fresh shrimp from 3rd & Ferry Fresh Fish and locally grown vegetables from Highmark Farmstand. It was their first visit to the Easton Public Market, and by their broad smiles and anticipation of other memorable meals at home, it wasn’t going to be their last. “We’ll be back soon,” they said, almost in unison. Opened in March 2016 in downtown Easton, Easton Public Market has quickly become not only a popular stop for city residents and business people downtown, but another must-see destination for the Lehigh Valley and beyond. As soon as you enter the glass doors from Northampton Street, you’re welcomed back to a time before bar-coded packaged and processed foods—a time when people would talk with vendors and smell, inspect, and sample their off-the-farm food before bringing it home for the dinner table. Nineteenth-century brick walls, fluted columns, and original, time-patinaed wood floors echo back to when the 300 block of Northampton Street represented the heart of Easton’s retail district, with Rader’s Dry Goods and H.L. Green’s Department Store among its early occupants. “The idea for the indoor market came out of the redevelopment activity in Easton and the Easton Farmers’ Market, which has grown wildly in recent years as a resource for people who are looking for locally-sourced food and produce,” says Megan McBride, market district director. Looking to satisfy a growing demographic of young families and empty nesters in need of more than the Saturday farmers’ market, the city conducted a feasibility study in 2007 in conjunction with Easton’s Nature Nurture Center, which is focused on getting the community talking and thinking critically about the local

Easton Public Market environment, to see if there would be support for a food market or co-op. “All the signs pointed to ‘yes,’ and we started to piece together the funding for it,” Megan says. “The biggest coup was Easton granting us $1 million, followed by state and private funding and support from Lafayette College, to acquire the building, which had been vacant for more than a decade.” Easton Public Market is a perfect fit for diverse tastes, needs, and schedules. It houses 14 vendors with choices spanning freshly roasted coffee (including iced coffee on tap!), falafel, olive oil blends, ribs, crepes, smoked brisket, and pizza. There’s even a Community Room for meetings, mixers, and private events. Families enjoy the casual, open atmosphere and bring their kids to the market after visiting Crayola Experience just a block away, which has helped bring lunch traffic to the market.
Easton Public Market, which attracts 5,000 people a week, has also made a mark on the local economy by creating 70 jobs. “People love the options. Dad can get a craft beer, kids can get a pizza, and mom a bowl of noodles, and the whole family goes home with fresh food,” Megan says. “Shoppers like the flexibility of the space—children can run in FreySmiles Kids’ Zone, 200-square-foot play area, and parents can enjoy a glass of wine.” Business people drop in regularly for lunch meetings, while remote workers and the mobile office community are coming to the market for a welcoming outpost with free Wi-Fi, good coffee, and the monthly Easton Tech Meetup. Mayor Sal Panto Jr. is a regular at the market, which, along with the burgeoning restaurant scene and cultural

attractions in the city, he believes is helping erase Easton’s long-held image as “the forgotten city on the other end of the Lehigh Valley.” “I think one thing that is at play here is that people young and old are realizing that healthy food means healthy lives,” he says. “People are getting away from additives in food and seeking locally sourced meats and vegetables.” The mayor says that most of the people who visit the Farmers’ Market on Saturday also stop at the Public Market. “People are coming to our city from a 50-mile radius; you wouldn’t have seen that 20 years ago,” he says. The Greater Easton Development Partnership plays a strong role in this expanding ecosystem with its Easton Main Street Initiative and Easton Ambassadors programs, in addition to running the Easton Farmers’ Market, Easton Public Market, and PA Bacon Fest. “We’re lucky to have a very supportive mayor and City Council who invested in this project from the start. Without that, the project wouldn’t have been possible,” says Jared Mast, executive director of the Greater Easton Development Partnership. “The vision for the market was to include contemporary and unique ‘fast casual’ dining options alongside fresh, local, and artisanal products,” he says. “The Highmark Farmstand is particularly strong in its commitment to supporting that vision. It sources the majority of its products from local farmers and local food producers.”
The market also is building upon Easton’s role as a culinary center in the Lehigh Valley. “With all the great restaurants, the Easton Farmers’ Market, and a growing number of food entrepreneurs, the Easton Public Market represents a natural expansion on that,” Jared says. “It’s not an accident that Oak Steakhouse opened next door to the market and that Easton continues to grow around craft food and beverage. “Most recently, we saw this with Sole Bar and Bottle opening downtown, with its production brewery to be located at the Simon Silk Mill,” he noted. “Common Space, a shared commercial kitchen space, also recently opened in downtown Easton.” Tod Auman, owner of Dundore & Heister, based in Wyomissing, Berks County, says it was Easton’s energy that motivated him to open his second organic, antibiotic-free meat store in the public market. “We looked at a lot of different locations, from Lancaster to Philadelphia, but I was so struck by the sense of food entrepreneurism and sense of civic pride in Easton, which stood out compared to other places we considered,” he says. When you visit Easton, “you can touch the past. The city’s leaders have done a great job keeping the historic buildings around and not taking them for granted,” Tod says. “What happens at the market is reminiscent of a simpler time, when

Easton Public Market retailers took pride in the products and the interaction with customers,” he says. “You’re not shopping just for sustenance, but also because you want to feel part of the process in selecting the best for your family. There’s a longing to experience what our grandparents had and a reckoning that while technology is great, there are some things that can’t be replaced, such as a desire to get together as a community.”

Easton Public Market, which attracts 5,000 people a week, has also made a mark on the local economy by creating 70 jobs. The Highmark Farmstand, which is operated by the market, procures 42 percent of the products purchased for resale from local farms and food purveyors; 21 percent comes from regional farms and purveyors, Megan notes. Some new additions coming this fall include a series of Dine with the Chef nights, sponsored by Morris Black Designs and featuring Bayou Easton, and Chile Pepper Fest on September 16, which will span the entire Easton Market District. And there’s live music Friday and Saturday nights from 6-9 presented by Scratch and Tolino Vineyards. “It’s what people are looking for,” Megan says. “It’s been a success because our vendors continuously search for the next best thing. It’s been a game changer for Easton and the Lehigh Valley in so many ways.”

Brett and Corinne Feldman are humble people. Transform your smile. Embrace your natural beauty.
The husband and wife are responsible for igniting a movement of providing healthcare for the region’s homeless, but won’t take credit for it. Instead, they dole out praise to the disenfranchised who trust them, the students who dedicate hundreds of hours to the couple’s cause, and the people who believed in a wild idea.

Corinne attended Midwestern University and became a certified physician assistant in 2005. After she graduated, the couple moved to the Lehigh Valley and Brett followed suit. He enrolled at DeSales University and earned his title as a C-PA two years after Corinne. The duo came to Pennsylvania with strong backgrounds in volunteerism: growing up, goodwill was always an important factor in Corinne’s family dynamic. She was taught to treat the impoverished with respect and kindness. Brett realized his passion for working with the homeless when he immersed himself in volunteer work while his wife attended Midwestern.

STREET MEDICINE The altruistic couple was eager to lend support to the area’s homeless once they moved to the Lehigh Valley, but they quickly realized organizations offering medical help were sparse. “There were screenings, but nothing comprehensive,” Corinne explains. “If you have high blood pressure, what are you doing with that person? You’re not giving them any way of solving that problem.” So, they hatched a plan. One year into his studies, Brett approached the DeSales’s faculty with Corinne about their idea about opening a free clinic through the school. “I remember going into the office and pitching this idea of street medicine,” recalls Corinne. “We said, ‘We have this idea and it’s crazy. We’re going to dig in and have a presence with a population that needs us.’” Maybe the idea wasn’t crazy. Maybe it was a necessity.

In 2007, the DeSales Free Clinic opened at the Allentown Rescue Mission and is run almost entirely by students in the physician assistant program. Men at the mission are treated for conditions such as diabetes, psychiatric illness, drug abuse, head injury, traumatic brain injuries, and exposure injuries such as frostbite. Cardiologists, podiatrists, otolaryngologists, and endocrinologists all volunteer time to ensure medical needs are met. For the first seven years, all financial resources for the clinic came from private donors and student fundraisers like bake sales and 5k races. Furniture to outfit the clinic were hand-me-downs,

Though Corinne is executive director of the clinic, she works full-time as an assistant professor for the very program from which Brett graduated. Upon taking the position, she implemented mandatory shifts at the rescue mission for all physician assistant students, making DeSales one of the few schools in the country to require volunteer medical work with the homeless. “The underlying messages we try to teach are how dehumanizing being homeless is, says Corinne. “They spend most of their lives being invisible in front of other people. Students are taught to approach patients with the mentality of “There you are. Let’s get through this together,â€? not “Here I am. I can ďŹ x you.â€? As a co-founder of the clinic, one of the most important things to Brett is teaching students how to relate to and interact with homeless patients. He says medical students often learn to disengage emotionally from patients. Brett deďŹ es that logic and tells students to share in their suffering. “You can only learn that by going to the people,â€? he says. “You can’t learn that in school or a hospital.â€?
“They treated me with love and respect,” says David. “Working with this population can be intimidating because of the stereotypes and the nature of homelessness. People here are in a rough spot, down and out. It definitely takes heart to want to take care of these people.” Brett and Corinne ensured their patient received the care he needed, including a physical so he could obtain a driver’s license. Today, David works full time at the Allentown Rescue Mission, and he and his wife have a son. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for people who wanted to help me,” David says.

STREET MEDICINE To combat stereotypes, Corinne and Brett extend their compassion training beyond medical students. They have three young children at home and don’t shy away from discussions about homelessness and why people find themselves living on the street or in a shelter. The awareness created from these conversations, whether with children, millennials, or grandparents, are considered the foundation of the free clinic. To treat the under-served, we must first try to comprehend the trajectory of their lives.

About 1,500 men visit the clinic each year, but Brett says that only provides a sliver of what the population needs. Community collaboration is at an alltime high among Bethlehem, Allentown, and Easton, to ensure men and women also receive food, shelter, and clothing. The Feldmans have aimed a spotlight on the efforts and achievements here in the Valley and other innovative, philanthropical medical professionals have noticed. Next month, Allentown will host the annual International Street Medicine symposium. Since Brett and Corinne have entered the scene, David has witnessed a growing understanding within the community concerning the homeless population. “Just remember that, whether they made poor choices or have been affected by poor choices, they deserve the same kind of respect and dignity anybody else does,” David says. “They’re human beings.” To learn more, visit streetmedicinelehighvalley.org.

GOOD TASTE

It has been several weeks since I had dinner at Top Cut Steakhouse, but morsels of the evening have been permanently inscribed in my memory. The velvety ďŹ nish of my wine, the vibrant color of my steak when I cut into it, the dreamy lighting of the dining room after the sun went down, the last bites of icing on my cake.

the stunning ground-level restaurant above which Top Cut sits. Perhaps you have a layover at the Melt bar, or perhaps you head straight for the elevator that opens on the third floor into the foyer. As you become attuned to the sleek climate, there’s a familiar feeling of enchanting intrigue signature of all Paxos Restaurants—a transporting sense that you are not, dear Toto, in the Lehigh Valley anymore.
TOP CUT And yet, you are. What I keep coming back to more than anything, though, is one word. It’s the same one I’d use to describe new silk sheets, a second glass of Macallan, the skin of a freshly picked peach, the saxophonist’s opening notes of the night: smooth. To get to Top Cut, you must first journey through Melt,

The dining room is quietly dramatic, with panoramic windows that reveal rooftop views of spectacular sunsets. Neutral tones, marble, wood, black semicircle booths, and crisp white tablecloths converge into easy elegance. The space can be closed off into one or two private rooms for parties, events, and business meetings.
If you didn’t stop for happy hour at Melt, you may want to do so here. The bar, which offers seasonal handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list, is a bit like a show before dinner. The bartenders spin around, skillfully shaking and straining cocktails or intuitively refilling wine glasses. If you’re in the mood, they’ll share some trivia or a riddle. Perhaps as notable as the ambiance and the food is the service. A restaurant’s knives and champagne flutes can be polished, but if the service isn’t, the facade is pointless. From the hostess station to the servers and the busboys to the general manager, the service was so genuinely knowledgable and enthusiastic—and delivered with such precise cadence— that dining at Top Cut feels like dining in “the good old days,” even if you only have an inkling of what those days once held. There is no rush, and there is also no wait.

The steak house does not suffer from any identity issues; it does not dabble or piggyback on foodie fads, nor does it try to stretch to breakfast or brunch or lunch. No, Top Cut is only open for dinner, and you come because you want the best steak you can get. As the only restaurant in the Lehigh Valley that exclusively serves USDA prime beef, this is where Top Cut delivers. The steakhouse’s meat is 100 percent purebred Black Angus, hand-selected by a specialty butcher in Chicago. (Only around 2 percent of cattle cuts earns the designation of “USDA prime”—it is the ultimate stamp of approval reserved for only the highest quality meats, offering superior tenderness, marbling, and flavor.) This is particularly true of the 10-ounce USDA prime Filet Mignon, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The meat was so luscious and juicy and had enough flavor that no additions— no sauces, no sides—were necessary to complete the meal, but I couldn’t resist ordering the House Steak Sauce and Grilled Royal Trumpet Mushrooms
in addition to the Onion Rings as sidekicks. The sauce was unique and delicious—sweeter and less tangy than I had anticipated—thanks to two secret ingredients: mango and walnuts. The mushrooms were wonderfully flavorful with a satisfying meaty texture. Other steaks include a 32-ounce Porterhouse, dry-aged 22-ounce BoneIn Ribeye, or 20-ounce Bone-In New York Strip. You can amp up your steak with tasty additions like Bone Marrow Shallot Crust or South African Lobster Tail. You can also get your seafood fix earlier in the meal, where appetizers have a surf-and-turf slant (Oysters on the Half Shell, Steak Tartare, Escargot). I tried the Colossal Lump Crab Cocktail, which came with three sauces: house cocktail, lemon aioli, and tomato granite. The crab meat was delicate, soft, and tender—the perfect beginning start to my meal.

All beginnings have an end, though. For fun, make a bet with your dining companion that you can go longer than they can without saying the words “oh my God.” Then order the Carrot Cake. Approximately the weight of a child’s bowling ball, the cake is a housemade specialty with sugar-roasted carrot cream mousse and vanilla cream cheese icing punctuated by crunchy candied pecans. If it doesn’t already have a cultlike following in the area, it will soon.

PRIDE OF PLACE
THE BRASS RAIL BY LENORA DANNELKE

SEPTEMBER 2O17
The Brass Rail: A cornerstone of Allentown’s edible heritage, The Brass Rail has welcomed guests for 86 years and counting. While comfy fare—with a delectable Italian-American accent—remains a hallmark of this Lehigh Street restaurant, the foundation of its fame was built on a 6-inch roll: Phil’s Original Steak Sandwich. And the story behind this icon of Lehigh Valley cuisine comes straight from the pages of a Horatio Alger poor-boy-makes-good novel. The tale begins with 9-year-old Phillip Sorrentino emigrating from Italy to America in 1917. Using an $80 stash he had saved, Phil opened a hot dog and hamburger stand 14 years later—a small operation that was quickly outgrown. By 1933, The Brass Rail—a name suggested by a friend—opened at 1137 Hamilton Street, and included a dining room, bar room, and a quick-stop doggie shop at the front. The current restaurant was added in 1961 and the downtown eatery remained open until 2001.
• serves more than 400,000 people per year • sells 215,000 steak sandwiches and cheesesteaks per year • uses 65,000 pounds of steak meat per year
Today, memorabilia that third-generation owner Mark Sorrentino displays at the restaurant includes two sections of gleaming brass tubing—the foot rail from the bar—mounted on a wooden plaque and a vintage photo showing the original location’s “Ladies’ Entrance” sign. (Yes, really—at that time, it was considered an impropriety for a woman to even walk through a bar, let alone sit down and hoist a brew.) Recently added window coverings at the restaurant are imprinted assorted yesteryear images that create a nostalgic gallery of Brass Rail history. When steak sandwiches (and a cheesesteak variation) were introduced in 1937, people were a bit skeptical of this novelty, comprised of sizzling chipped steak meat

THE BRASS RAIL and onions topped with signature sauce, pickle slices, and a hot bell pepper. But the game-changer came the following year, when Phil took his creation to the Great Allentown Fair. Embracing early guerilla marketing tactics, the innovative owner printed newspaper-style flyers with the headline “Phil’s Steak Sandwich Hit of the Fair!” and had them posted across the fairgrounds. The strategy worked, and a legendary sandwich tradition was born. The Brass Rail continues to run two stands at the fair each year. Today, Mark operates The Brass Rail under his grandfather’s simple-buteffective founding principles: good food, courteous service, and a fair price. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,” he quips. While his wife Leigh manages the bustling 130seat dining room and 18-sear bar, the hands-on owner can be spotted jumping in wherever a helping hand is needed, including bussing tables. After growing up around the restaurant, Mark started to work at the fair at 10 years of age—and didn’t get any preferential treatment as a family member. “My sister and I peeled and chopped the onions. Bags and bags and bags of onions,” he says. “It can be difficult to be the boss’s son and I worked extra hard to earn the staff’s respect.” While he continued to gain experience at The Brass Rail by working in every single position during high school and college— “Being on the grill was my niche,” he notes—Mark had aspirations of becoming a golf pro. “Those dwindled when I found out exactly how good I was.” ®

Did you know most heating it was where he belonged. “It was in my blood,” he says. The menu today encompasses traditional Italian specialties, from Spaghetti and Lasagna to Chicken Milanese and Veal Parmesan, classic entrees such as Marinated Pork Chops, Angus Rib-eye Steak and Crab Patties, plus a spectrum of sandwiches, burgers, soups, starters, and salads. There’s even a “Liter Fare” selection of favorites served in smaller portions, and look for Baby Beef Liver with onions or bacon in the “Old Fashioned Favorites” section. “One of the secrets to our success is consistency. That’s something we stress immensely here,” says Mark. “I take a lot of pride in that.”

When steak sandwiches (and a cheesesteak variation) were introduced in 1937, people were a bit skeptical of this novelty. Pizza, which Phil introduced in 1951— among the first in the Valley to do so—is another menu mainstay still made from the original recipe. Cheesesteaks appear not only in sandwich form with plenty of variations, but also as a salad, a quesadilla, and as an omelet on the breakfast menu. Contemporary tastes are reflected in such dishes as Thai Chicken Bites and Coconut Encrusted Shrimp, along

with extensive daily specials ranging from Peppered Salmon and Pesto Baked Haddock to Chicken Alfredo and Applewood Smoked Pork Loin—and, of course, with traditional favorites like Halupkies or Pork and Sauerkraut. Posting a month-long specials menu on the website enables patrons to plan an optimally timed visit. Don Maurer, The Brass Rail’s chef of more than 25 years, gets to exercise his creativity in both attracting new customers and satisfying veteran fans. “The specials are a chance to try out new dishes,” Mark says. “One of the most difficult things my wife and I have to do is to keep the menu updated but not change it to something we’re not.” The demands of serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week—The Brass Rail closes only three days a year: Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas— and also operating a popular banquet facility are heavy, but Mark credits a highly experienced and dedicated core staff with helping to keep operations running smoothly. Customer loyalty appears to be a lifelong, even generational, commitment that doesn’t seem to fade when locals move from the area—and come back to visit. A comment regularly heard by Mark is, “‘I just got off the plane and the first place I came was Brass Rail. I didn’t even make it home yet.’ I love hearing that. It makes me that much more proud of what my grandfather started and what I continue. There’s a lot of pride in that.”

One thing that makes the inevitability of a Monday an easier pill to swallow is when it’s accompanied by a meal that isn’t your Saturday night leftovers (or found at a drive-thru or in a freezer aisle). The only problem? Mondays are typically a day of rest for the restaurant industry in the aftermath of the weekend. How many times have you trekked across town, thinking that all that stood between you and your feast was a fifteen-minute wait—only to discover that it was more like a door and a deadbolt?

backpacking trips Never done it before or don’t have the equipment? The thought can be intimidating, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just starting out, backpacking trips are a rewarding way to spend time in nature, and it’s easy if you have the right gear. Check out our trail guide for where to go if you want an easy stroll, a challenging hike, a walk with your dog, or—if you’re ready—to spend the night in nature.
Clothing and Shoes It’s arguable that footwear is the most important piece of gear to have. You’ll be walking on a variation of dirt, rocks, roots, and puddles, so it’s crucial that you have supportive footwear with good, grippy outsoles to keep you feeling confident on the trails. Fit is of utmost importance, and the best way to purchase hiking boots is to stop at a local outfitter and try them on yourself. Remember that there isn’t one perfect shoe or brand for every person. The right one for you is the one that fits. (Don’t forget to wear them around the house for a few days to break them in!)

As for clothing, forget about cotton. Cotton retains moisture, therefore making things generally uncomfortable. This means that all of your clothing— socks, underwear, pants and bottoms— should be made of a synthetic material (like polyester and nylon) or merino wool. All have generally the same purpose: to wick moisture from your body to keep you dry and cool, while at the same time providing you warmth when you’re cold. This doesn’t mean you have to go and drop a stack of cash on a brand new
wardrobe. If you’re a runner, yogi, or gym rat, you’re probably halfway there. Just check the fabric content—if the material has little to no cotton in it, you’re good. For a two-day trip, all you need is a pair of pants or shorts, two shirts, two pairs of underwear and socks, plus something to sleep in. If the forecast is looking sketchy, bring a rain jacket, and the temperature will determine if you need an insulating layer as well.
The Backpack, Tent, and Sleeping Gear The most essential gear you need for backpacking is—you guessed it—a backpack. (And we aren’t talking about that Jansport bag from college.)
Check out our trail guide for where to go if you want an easy stroll, a challenging hike, a walk with your dog, or if you’re ready to spend the night in nature. A 30-50 liter pack is just about the size you need to hold your food, water, and other gear for the weekend. Make sure that the pack fits your body correctly, especially with your torso length and waist size in mind. While you can do these measurements yourself at home, this is piece of gear that’s best purchased at an outfitter where you can get fitted by a professional. Easton Outdoor Company in Easton is one such locale.

Class Rank Counts.
Sleeping bags are simple. Be sure to get one that’s the right length and the right warmth for the season. Typically, a sleeping bag will be filled with down or a synthetic material—down is the usually the warmest option and tends to be more lightweight. The lighter weight, the better (you’re carrying it, after all!). Because no one wants to sleep with rocks and sticks poking their backs, grab yourself a sleeping pad, too.

Speaking of sleeping, a one-person tent is good for yourself, but if you’re sharing a tent, get a two-person (just prepare yourself for some close quarters). A three-person is roomier for two people, but remember that the bigger the tent, the more weight you’re carrying.
Food and Water All of this trekking calls for lots of hydration, and the most convenient option is to get a “water bladder” that you can fill up and slide right in your pack. You also shouldn’t just take any water from the ground and drink it, so you’re going to to need a method for purification. The least expensive and easiest are iodine tablets, which kill bacteria, viruses, and giardia. For food, stock up on dehydrated meals that just require boiling water to prepare. All you’ll need is a compact stove, matches, plus a bowl and utensils to eat with. Be sure to pack plenty of snacks like trail mix, jerky, energy bars, and any other high-calorie and high-protein foods you like, because you’re working hard!
Everything Else A first aid kit should always be on hand, even for a day trip. Most major retailers sell pre-packed kits so you don’t need to worry about what to fill it with. Of course, bring any medications you need, plus a few extra just in case.
PLUMB CRAZY OVER LOYALTY.
Toilet paper is nice to have on hand for when you have to “go” (look up the right way to do it while on the trail, because there is one), plus hand sanitizer and any other small toiletries you may need and can fit in your pack. Keep these things in more accessible pockets. Don’t forget a small lantern or headlamp so you can see at night. Those are the basics. You might be thinking this is too much work or too expensive, and sure, it can be. But don’t be discouraged. If all of this gear is out of your budget, start out small with a pair of good hiking shoes or boots, go for longer day hikes, and then slowly start building up your stamina and collection of gear.

When Robin Porter started Connexions Gallery in 1990, he couldn’t have known how perfectly it would grow into its name. From its very beginning, the Northampton Street gallery has connected lovers of contemporary arts and crafts with a varied group of local and regional artists. But over the years, it’s played a continuing and key role in Easton’s artistic and retail renaissance, becoming a cultural hub that offers music, poetry, performance art, workshops and classes, and a place for the community to gather.

connexions gallery “I believe the arts can be a bridge between communities,” says Anthony J. Marraccini, who has been the manager and curator since 2003, when Alice Kwiatkowski purchased it from Robin. “We try to make it more than a standard art gallery. It’s not a static or austere environment. We’re not hyper-elite. I think it’s OK to elevate art in a certain fashion, but I don’t think that’s what art is about.”

Anthony and Alice have stayed true to Robin’s original vision, and Connexions is now the longest-running local, regional contemporary art gallery in the Lehigh Valley. But the pair has really focused on the local aspect, getting involved in numerous aspects of the Easton community, whose parallel arts and preservation movements had begun to coalesce around the time they took over the gallery. “Right away, we knew that there was a need for the community to get off its feet, so we went head on into every community organization,” Anthony recalls, noting that he served as president of the Arts Community of Easton from 2004 to 2016, while Alice served on the board for 10 years. He was also a founding member of the Easton Main Street Initiative and still sits on the board of the Greater Easton Development Partnership. “We did everything we could to help build up what had been here. The example was set before we got here. We wanted to be part of that change and to help out where we could.” Easton now boasts several other art galleries, along with eateries, retail establishments, and other venues that show or sell art. Rather than spawning a sense of competition, this hive of
creativity instead draws more people to the city as an art destination, fostering an even stronger sense of community.

Connexions features a variety of art, from paintings and jewelry to pottery, glass, and even some smaller sculptures. The gallery is divided into two spaces: the featured artist space, which features the work of one to two artists in a show that lasts four to six weeks, and the group showcase, a longer show that features the works of multiple artists. “There is a lot of local talent throughout the Valley,” Anthony says. “The trick is creating a space that they can show in. I tend to work with about two dozen artists on a regular basis and still try to create space for new people.”
— Anthony Marraccini Connexions Gallery, manager and curator Some of the artists have been showing at Connexions since before Anthony and Alice took it over. Among the longtime artists whose works are still regularly featured are Nancy Bossert, Danny Moyer, Tina Madonia, Val Bertoia and, less frequently, Isadore LaDuca. Newer

connexions gallery artists include Angie Snyder and Susan Washington. “I have a special spot in my heart for Connexions because it was the first location that took a chance on me and helped foster my growth as artist by letting me express myself,” says Danny, an artist and art teacher from Easton who approached Robin about 20 years ago with several small collages. “I asked him if he’d hang them in the gallery,” he recalls. “He said he’d put them up, but that you never know what will happen. They sold, and he asked me if I had more. I brought in more, and they sold and he asked me if I had bigger ones. He gave me my first solo show there in 2000, and I’ve been showing in the group shows regularly since then, with solo exhibitions about every four years.” “Anthony and Alice really treat the place as a venue to enjoy and appreciate art, not just to sell it,” Danny says. “You don’t feel like it’s a business when you walk in. No one is trying to make you leave with something. And while they aren’t going to put up inferior work, they give artists an opportunity to put themselves out there. I have a lot of respect for a gallery that’s willing to take chances.”

“They are so supportive of everyone, even of people coming into the community and doing the same thing,” says Nancy, a Bethlehem painter who also sells drawings, stoneware, jewelry, and fiber art at Connexions. “They’re not territorial at all. It’s like, ‘The more the merrier. The better the atmosphere in this town.’ I’ve dealt with a lot of galleries over the years. Connexions has such a positive atmosphere. It’s just a wonderful place.”
INNOVATION. FUNCTION. ELEGANCE. Let the beauty we love be what we do.
Nancy particularly likes the regular Drink and Draw sessions, which bring artists together for an evening to draw the same subject. Connexions is one of several Valley venues to hold these sessions; the sessions at Connexions feature a nude model. “People come in and sit and draw and bring alcohol if they want,” Anthony says. “It’s not a rowdy thing. It’s professional and casual at the same time.” Connexions also has hosted literature workshops and poetry readings, offers regular open mic nights, and has become a hot spot for improvisational jazz. “I had some musician friends who wanted to play here,” Anthony says. “We built up a scene just by having gigs all the time. We have had people from Vermont, Iowa, Jerusalem, Germany, and France show up to play. We have locals who play here all the time. There’s an open mic every second Friday. Forty or fifty people will come out for open mic on most nights. Here it’s a performance. It’s not just background music in a bar.” Connexions’ widespread support for art of all kinds has been recognized by the ArtsQuest Foundation, which will present it with the Linny Award for Small Business Supporter of the Arts on November 1.

46 To celebrate our 100th issue of Lehigh Valley Marketplace, we’ve rounded up 100 of our favorite things about the Lehigh Valley. In no particular order, here are some of the reasons why we love calling this corner of the world our home:
1.
If you like seasons, this is the place to be. We get all four, meaning part of the year is spent walking around in an oven and part of it is spent talking about the wind chill. Still, nothing is better than fall on the East Coast.
2.
If you want to live on a farm in the country, you can do it and still be less than half an hour away from downtown Allentown, Bethlehem, or Easton.
3.
If you want to visit New York, Philadelphia, or the beach, you can do so in an easy day trip.
4. Yes, we’re in a valley, but we’re also a quick ride away from the slopes at Blue Mountain or Bear Creek.
5.
You (or your children) can earn a degree without a tearful goodbye at the airport, or without even needing to attend a single move-in day at the dorms: there are many colleges to choose from within driving distance.
100 Things We Love About the Lehigh Valley
6.
If you’re done with degrees, but still want to learn something new, you can take a non-credit LifeLearning class at Northampton Community College (like cheese making, home brewing, or jewelry arts).
7.
There are only about 300 drive-in movie theaters left in the United States, and we’re home to two of them: Becky’s in Walnutport, and Shankweiler’s, which is the country’s oldest, in Orefield.
8.
If sitting in your car to watch a movie isn’t your style, head to Frank Banko Alehouse instead, where you can sip a beer (or Cabernet Sauvignon) while you watch the film.
9.
And, if you need a little bit more live action, we’re the home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, and you can catch a game at Coca-Cola Park. If you don’t like baseball, there’s more to do, like eat Belgian Waffle Tacos or Maple Bacon Funnel Cake.
10. Nobody throws a festival like us. In fact, we love fests so much that in a few years, we might just have a Festfest.
64
SEPTEMBER 2O17
32
11. There’s Musikfest, of course, a the largest free music festival in the country: a 10-day stretch of live music, deepfried food, and open containers.
12. And there’s also Baconfest, where you can eat bacon on a stick followed by bacon ice cream chased with bacon beer.
13. But then there’s also Allentown’s Blues, Brews, & BBQ, which is exactly what it sounds like.
14. For those who’d rather cuddle with pigs than deep-fry them, there’s also VegFest, a row of surprisingly tasty and entirely vegan options along the vibrant greenway in South Bethlehem.
15. And while you’re being healthy (okay, healthy-ish), there’s also the Blueberry Festival, with blueberry-infused treats like pie, ice cream, and beer.
16. Head back to Easton for the Garlic Fest, where you can “eat, drink, and stink.”
17. If you like beer, there are plenty of festivals for you: the PBS39 BrewFest, Allentown Beer Fest, Lehigh Valley Brewer’s

Guild Festival, and the Blue Mountain Beer Fest. Cheers to that!
18. Sangria, the fruity booze drink that graces tables every summer, now has its own festival: SangriaFest at SteelStacks. In between festivals, you can keep your sangria sampling local year-round with a bottle from Blue Mountain Vineyards, or try a $5 glass of sangria on Thursdays at Tapas.
19. If you like food trucks, we have a food truck festival. We also have a Border Brawl, where our food trucks go grill-to-grill with the food trucks of New Jersey.
20. You can learn the art of Tomahawk throwing, how to play disc golf, and watch the Keystone Dock Dogs long jump and leap at the Step Outdoors Lehigh Valley festival.
21. It makes sense that Bethlehem— fondly known as “Christmas City”—also hosts Chriskindlmarkt,
66
SEPTEMBER 2O17
one of the best holiday markets in the country. The family-friendly event offers handmade goods, German and Austrian delicacies, and live music.
22. If you can’t make it to Munich for Oktoberfest, you can still get a taste of the festivities at Oktoberfest at SteelStacks.
23. Fancy yourself a card shark? Head to The Sands, which also offers outlet shopping, an event center, and restaurants from celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.
26. Allentown was a hiding spot for the Liberty Bell during the Revolutionary War. A replica exists today at the Liberty Bell Museum.
27. The historic Sun Inn opened in 1760 and hosted George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and Alexander Hamilton, among others. Today, you can stroll through the museum, or just hang out in history at the tavern.
29. We literally built this country:
Bethlehem Steel manufactured steel for prominent landmarks like the Golden Then again, we’ve got some celebrity Gate Bridge, Chrysler Building, Madison chefs of our own. Chef Lee Chizmar of Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, and Bolete appeared on Food Network’s “Beat the Hoover Dam. op—it’s also the stage of the Levitt Pavilion, where another 50 free concerts take place each summer as part of the Levitt Summer Concert series.
31. Historic Bethlehem’s Sun Inn Courtyard also hosts Tunes at Twilight,
98
a free series of open-air concerts where you’ll fit right in with your dancing shoes or your lawn chair in tow.
32. We recently adopted a very tall resident: Murphy the giraffe at the Lehigh Valley Zoo.
33. Budding professional chefs can attend the acclaimed culinary program at Northampton Community College. If you’d rather eat than cook, visit the Hampton Winds restaurant on campus, a fine dining BYOB restaurant staffed by the culinary students.
34. We’ve responded to the craft beer explosion with plenty of breweries of our own. (Insider tip: try the Citrus IPA from Funk, Space Monkey saison from Brew Works, or the Sunday Morning Stout from Weyerbacher.)
35. Home to the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail and the area’s signature grape, Chambourcin, our wineries are putting Pennsylvanian wine on the map. The Cabernet Franc from Bangor’s Tolino Vineyards was the “Best in Show” winner of the Pennsylvania Sommelier Judgement Day event.
34
96
36. If something a little harder is your cup of (Long Island) iced tea, well, there’s never been a better time to live in the Valley. Just three years ago, there wasn’t a distillery in town—now the area is home to five craft spirit distillers.
63
37. If you’re a car enthusiast, this is the place for you. Das Awkscht Fescht, the country’s largest antique and classic car show, takes place here every year.

42. And if you feel more at home on two wheels instead of four, you can head to the Valley Preferred Cycling Center (or the Velodrome).
43. When you need to feel like you got away for the weekend without actually leaving the area, we have more inns, bed and breakfasts, and retreats than you know what to do with, from Glasbern Inn to the Sayre Mansion, Steckel House to the Historic Benner Mansion, and the Globe Inn to the Lafayette Inn. 46. Dorney Park, which has been open since 1884, is right in our backyard if you fancy a thrill ride.
47. If you want to get your thrills with your feet firmly planted on the ground, you can take a historic candlelit ghost tour through historic downtown Bethlehem.
48. Pennsylvania has the most remaining covered bridges in the United States, and the Lehigh Valley has 7 of them.
49. We also have the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, with vintage coaches from the early 1900s pulled by diesel engines. These scenic trips are a beautiful way to take in the gorge, especially in the fall.
50. Easton Public Market is a foodie’s paradise, with hands-on food workshops and events as well as some of the best bites in town under one roof—from crepes to BBQ, noodles to pizza, and coffee to wine.
51. Our farmers’ markets aren’t to be missed, either. Easton is home to the longest continuous-running openair farmers’ market—established in 1752—while Allentown, Bethlehem, and surrounding cities and towns put on farmers’ markets of their own to show off the area’s rich agricultural setting.

54. We love our good-spirited rivalries: the high school Thanksgiving football game between Easton and Phillipsburg draws an average crowd of 13,000 every year.
55. And there’s a bit of collegiate rivalry—in fact, it’s the most-played Division I rivalry, even more than Yale and Princeton or Yale and Harvard. The annual Lafayette vs. Lehigh game has been played 152 times—every year from 1884 to 2016.

stem cell therapy
A LEHIGH VALLEY TRADITION FOR OVER 85 YEARS
Dr. Ranjan Sachdev of Sachdev Orthopaedics offers an alternative treatment for orthopedic disease and injury to the Lehigh Valley: bone marrow aspirate concentrate therapy, commonly known as stem cell therapy. This innovative process uses a patient’s own stem cells derived from their bone marrow to treat joint-related ailments without undergoing an invasive surgical procedure. “Stem cells have the power to form new tissues and bring in blood supply. They can form tendon, bone, and muscle,” says Dr. Sachdev.

What if there were a non-invasive treatment that brings the hope of recovery, or at least reduces the pain? Dr. Sachdev first considered using stem cells as a treatment method when he found that one of his classmates had tried it as a treatment. “[They were] quite happy with it,” says Dr. Sachdev. After seeing his friend doing so well, he grew an interest in the practice and took it upon himself to learn more and eventually began practicing stem cell therapy himself. Dr. Sachdev has been offering the treatment to eligible patients for three years.

How does this stem cell therapy work? While there are a number of areas in the body where stem cells can be obtained and two kinds of stem cells derived from bone marrow, Dr. Sachdev works exclusively with mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs. MSCs have proven to be easily harvested and quite effective at replacing other injured or damaged cells, making them a viable solution for orthopedic conditions. After the patient is put under IV sedation, the MSCs are aspirated from the bone marrow through a needle injected in the back part of the pelvic bone. After the MSCs are retrieved, they are processed in a centrifuge that concentrates the cells into bone marrow aspirate cells (BMACs). Once the BMACs are injected into the area of disease or injury, the procedure is over. The stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure commonly performed in a surgical center and requires IV sedation—so you aren’t completely under. After the treatment, there may be soreness for a day or two, meaning minimal recovery time, and results are typically seen around one to two months post-procedure.
Who is stem cell therapy for? While arthritis is the most common orthopedic problem that Dr. Sachdev treats with stem cell therapy, the procedure can also help with rotator cuff tears, tendonitis of the shoulder, elbow, ankle, and knee, plus plantar fasciitis, bone cysts, and fractures that aren’t healing well.

stem cell therapy Dr. Sachdev says that the ideal candidate for stem cell therapy is “someone who wants to use their own biology for healing” and wants to avoid major surgery, or has tried other methods of healing that didn’t work. For example, some patients may have been getting cortisone shots in the knee and considering knee replacement. “If it’s a moderately arthritic knee and there are still some joints left there, sometimes the stem cells will give them enough pain relief that they can function,” says Dr. Sachdev.

There are also cases when an injury or disease is too far gone to benefit from the therapy. “if they are so advanced, then the stem cells may not work,” says Dr. Sachdev. The best thing to do is discuss and consider your options: “I will tell [patients] if there’s a good chance of success or not,” he says.
How effective is it? The outcome is promising—about 70% of patients say that they see improvement post-treatment.

Dr. Sachdev is confident there are no medically-related risks involved in the procedure because it is solely based on a patient’s own cells; there are no foreign chemicals being injected into the body that could cause an adverse reaction. Because there are no incisions, Dr. Sachdev has also not seen any cases of infection. It’s important to note that the stem cell therapy is not for every person.

Dr. Sachdev avoids treating patients who have cancer, or have undergone or are currently undergoing chemotherapy. “Chemotherapy may have affected stem cells,” says Dr. Sachdev. “There could also be cancer cells left in bone marrow,” which could make for a risky possibility of injecting contaminated concentrate elsewhere in the body.
ABOUT DR. SACHDEV Dr. Sachdev did his orthopedic training at Creighton University, and more notably, the highly esteemed Mayo Clinic. He received his medical degree at Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, and completed his residency at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. He has been practicing in the Lehigh Valley since 1981. Aside from stem cell therapy, Dr. Sachdev performs a number of surgical procedures like total or partial joint replacements, fracture care, hand surgery, arthroscopic surgery, and sports-related injuries. Even if you aren’t a candidate for stem cell therapy, it’s likely that Dr. Sachdev has another treatment option for you. Life is too short for coping with pain.
