Das MKM Museum Küppersmühle ist Duisburgs Haus für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst. Es liegt im lebhaften Duisburger Innenhafen, direkt am Wasser. Den Besucher erwartet mit der Sammlung Ströher eine der bedeutendsten Sammlungen deutscher Nachkriegskunst weltweit, mit Meisterwerken von Georg Baselitz, Hanne Darboven, K.O. Götz, Candida Höfer, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Bernard Schultze, Emil Schumacher, Rosemarie Trockel u.v.a. Zusätzlich bietet das MKM ein abwechslungsreiches Ausstellungsprogramm, von Günther Uecker über Jörg Immendorff bis zu zeitgenössischer Fotografie. Und jährlich findet hier der bundesweite Kunstwettbewerb der Schulen „Jugend interpretiert Kunst“ statt. Sehenswert ist auch die Architektur: Moderne Baukunst von Herzog & de Meuron trifft im MKM auf Industriekultur. 1997–1999 haben die Schweizer Star-Architekten das ehemalige Mühlen- und Speichergebäude – bis in die 1970er Jahre lagert in der „Küppersmühle“ noch Getreide – zu einem lichten, großzügigen Museum für moderne Kunst verwandelt. Außen Backstein – innen White Cube, mit Blick auf den Hafen und einer Ausstellungsfläche von über 4.000 m². Located directly on the banks of the city’s vibrant inner harbour, the MKM Museum Küppersmühle is Duisburg‘s museum for modern and contemporary art. Awaiting visitors is one of the world’s leading collections of post-war German art, the Ströher Collection, featuring masterpieces by Georg Baselitz, Hanne Darboven, K.O. Götz, Candida Höfer, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Bernard Schultze, Emil Schumacher, Rosemarie Trockel, to name but a few. Furthermore, the MKM offers a varied programme of exhibitions, ranging from Günther Uecker or Jörg Immendorff to contemporary photography. And each year the nation-wide schools art competition “Young People Interpret Art” is staged here. The building itself is also quite stunning: For in the MKM, modern architecture designed by Herzog & de Meuron encounters traditional industrial culture. Between 1997– 1999, the Swiss team of star architects transformed the former grain mill and silo – the “Küppersmühle” was still being used to store grain until the 1970s – into a naturally-lit, spaciously lofty museum for modern art. Brick façade on the outside – a White Cube inside, offering views onto the harbour, and boasting exhibition space measuring over 4,000 sq.m. Directly in front of the museum, visitors have the opportunity to relax in the numerous cafés and restaurants or take advantage of the many walks through one of Duisburg’s most beautiful districts.

In einem der herausragenden Museumsbauten der Nachkriegszeit präsentiert das LehmbruckMuseum eine einzigartige Sammlung moderner Skulptur. Ausgehend vom Werk Wilhelm Lehmbrucks begegnen sich hier Primitivismus und Kubismus, Abstraktion und Expressionismus, Konstruktivismus und Minimalismus – in Werken von Picasso, Barlach, Brancusi, Dalí, Magritte, Beuys, Moore oder Serra. Zudem verfügt das Museum über Deutschlands bedeutendste Giacometti-Werkgruppe und eine erlesene Sammlung deutscher Malerei, von der Jahrhundertwende bis in die 1960er Jahre, von BrückeKünstlern wie Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein und Mueller über Nolde, Macke, Campendonk und Rohlfs bis hin zu Jawlensky, Kokoschka und Molzahn. Wegweisende Wechselausstellungen und Veranstaltungen wie die „plastikBAR“ am Donnerstagabend ergänzen die Sammlung ebenso wie die überregional beachtete Kunstvermittlung mit ihrem Leitspruch „Kunst ist für alle da“. Seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten werden hier neben Programmen für Gruppen, Familien und Schulklassen Angebote für Menschen mit besonderen Bedürfnissen wie Hörgeschädigte, Sehbehinderte oder Menschen mit Demenz entwickelt. Diese Mischung macht das Haus zu einem außergewöhnlichen Ort der Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Kunst.

The LehmbruckMuseum presents a unique collection of modern sculpture in one of the outstanding museum buildings of the post-war period. Based on the work of Wilhelm Lehmbruck, primitivism and cubism, abstraction and expressionism, constructivism and minimalism all encounter each other here – in works by Picasso, Barlach, Brancusi, Dalí, Magritte, Beuys, Moore, and Serra. The museum moreover has Germany‘s most important Giacometti group and a choice collection of German paintings from the turn of the century up to the 1960s by Brücke artists such as Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein and Mueller to Nolde, Macke, Campendonk and Rohlfs up to Jawlensky, Kokoschka, and Molzahn. Trailblazing temporary exhibitions and events such as the “plastikBAR” on Thursday evenings supplement the collection as well as the nationally respected art appreciation efforts under the maxim “art is for everyone”. Apart from programmes for groups, families, and school classes, for over two decades we have developed offerings tailored for people with special needs such as the hearing-impaired, visually handicapped, or people with dementia. This mixture makes the house an exceptional location of communication between people and art.

Das Museum DKM liegt in einer ruhigen Seitenstraße im Zentrum der Duisburger Innenstadt zwischen Kant-Park, LehmbruckMuseum und dem Hauptbahnhof. Die ehemalige Wohn- und Gewerbeimmobilie aus den 1960er Jahren wurde 2005 von dem Schweizer Architekten Hans Rohr in ein Haus für die Kunst umgewandelt, das über 2.700 m2 Ausstellungsfläche verfügt, verteilt auf fünf Ebenen und 51 Räume. Mit zurückhaltender Klarheit ordnet sich die Museumsarchitektur der Präsentation der privaten Sammlung DKM unter und schafft sinnlich inszenierte, kontemplative Räume. Das Konzept der Dauerausstellung setzt auf das Gegenüber von zeitgenössischer und vergangener Formensprache, auf den Dialog von Alt und Neu sowie auf die Beschäftigung mit asiatisch geprägten Geisteshaltungen. Unter dem Titel “Linien stiller Schönheit” vereint die Präsentation sehr unterschiedliche Sammlungsbereiche: Zeitgenössische Kunst seit den 1960er Jahren (z.B. Norbert Kricke und Richard Long), klassische und zeitgenössische Fotografie (wie Albert Renger-Patzsch, Bernd und Hilla Becher), über 2.000 Jahre alte sowie aktuelle Kunst aus Südostasien (u.a. Ai Weiwei und Yuji Takeoka), Kunst aus Alt-Ägypten und Gandhaa-ra sowie Gefäße aus 5.000 Jahren Kulturgeschichte. Auf einzigartige Weise legt die weitläufige Präsentation ihr Augenmerk auf Prinzipien zeitloser Ästhetik sowie auf das sinnliche Erleben der Exponate. Das Museum DKM zeigt regelmäßig Wechselausstellungen, die an die Sammlungsschwerpunkte anknüpfen. Im Anschluss an den Ausstellungsbesuch lädt das Museums-Café zum Verweilen ein.

The Museum DKM is located in a quiet side street in central Duisburg, between Kant Park, LehmbruckMuseum and the central train station. In 2005, Swiss architect Hans Rohr transformed what was once a 1960s residential and commercial property into a building for the arts. With over 2,700 m2 of exhibition space divided over ﬁve levels and 51 rooms, the reserved clarity of the museum architecture privileges the presentation of the DKM private collection above all else and enhances the work on display with sensuously enacted, contemplative exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibition concept focuses on the juxtaposition of past and contemporary use of forms, the dialogue between old and new as well as the interest in the Asian-inﬂuenced states of mind. Encompassed in the title “Lines of Quiet Beauty” is a presentation of very different areas of the collection: contemporary art from the 1960s onward (including Norbert Kricke and Richard Long, for example), classic and contemporary photography (such as Albert Renger-Patzsch and Bernd and Hilla Becher), recent and over 2,000-year-old artworks from southeast Asia (Ai Weiwei and Yuji Takeoka), art from ancient Egypt and Gandha-ra along with vessels from 5,000 years of cultural history. The broad spectrum work on view reveals a unique dedication to the principles of timeless aesthetic and the sensual experience of the objects on display. The Museum DKM regularly shows temporary exhibitions tied to key parts of the collection. Visitors are also invited to spend time in the museum café, which is located directly next to the exhibition area.
