Tigers recorded an eighth win of the league season with tries from Hanro Liebenberg and Charlie Clare, plus 16 points from the boot of fly-half George Ford.

Victory was built on 16 unanswered points and territorial dominance in the first half, with Liebenberg driving over the line following a typical charge from fellow back-rower Jasper Wiese.

Dan Kelly produced a trysaving tackle on Ben Stevenson as the Newcastle wing dived for the corner, before Tigers pressure produced opportunities for Ford to keep the scoreboard ticking with three penalties before halftime, the last of which followed a yellow card for Falcons lock Darren Barry.

But Falcons enjoyed more possession and opportunities in the second half, as penalties mounted up in their favour before Will Welch got their first try.

Ford responded with a longrange penalty to make it 19-7 and Tigers had a Freddie Steward score disallowed before Clare finished off the pack’s drive for the line.

Newcastle added their second try straight from kick-off, with scrum-half Sam Stuart using a tap penalty to dart over the line.

NOTEBOOK…

Ford, Genge and Martin back from England… Wiese back from ban… Van Wyk suspended… 10th hooker try of the season… Harry Potter’s first start since Round 2… Yellow cards for Wiese and Martin.

QUOTE... “It was a bit scrappy but you have to deal with different situations to get the win. At times we weren’t at our best but we still got the points.”
