SUPPORTING TIGERS’ COMMUNITY PROGRAMME

Tigers rugby development officers have been supporting rugby sessions at schools across the city, including The Winstanley Community College in Braunstone.

This secondary school is located less than five miles away from the famous home of Leicester Tigers and, with the offer of support in and around schools led by the club, our community coaches will continue to run a number of sessions for young people.

The school’s Head of PE, Kevin Higgins, shared just how the club is helping them to keep kids active and help to promote the sport, which is a part of Premiership Rugby’s Gallagher Project Rugby campaign.

“I worked with Scott Clarke and his team at the club a while back, so I was keen to get back involved when we received the invite to get our students involved in Project Rugby,” he said.

“Rugby isn’t our primary sport, but actually we’re seeing that a lot of our kids are enjoying trying something new and that is only helped by the presence of the Tigers coaches who come along to lead the sessions. The coaching is about fun and learning the basics, as well as playing games that the kids enjoy. They also enjoy it when we look to develop those skills, bringing in things like tackle bags and other equipment, although that is obviously limited at this time.

“The great thing about rugby is that it is for everyone and, especially when Tigers are just up the road, we’re keen to help to inspire the kids to get involved and take the game further at a club level.”

Tigers are delivering Gallagher Project Rugby as part of a national initiative designed to get young people playing and enjoying the game. It works to introduce rugby to girls and boys from a variety of backgrounds and supports them with professional coaching from Tigers to get involved and have fun, learn how to play and take the game up at their local club too.
