Shrimp Festival announces poster contest winner The annual contest for the National Shrimp Festival’s official poster is always a heated competition. Columbia Southern helping to feed the Gulf Coast As part of its community outreach, Columbia Southern University (CSU) donated $3,000 to Feeding the Gulf Coast on Wednesday, April 12, to support its ongoing backpack program to feed at-risk children in the local area. Citizens turned out in droves for the finale of the 2017 Music at Meyer series. Leading the band New Earth Army was local Melissa Joiner, who wowed the crowd with her vocals and tambourine skills. The weather was warm and sunny, a far cry from the other two shows one of which was rained out to LuLu’s and the other considerably chillier. The concert series has become a favorite of locals and tourists alike over its tenure.

Orange Beach’s Camp Sunshine summer program has continued to grow in popularity, as some children looking to participate have now been wait listed for this summer’s program and their families have asked the city to try to address the problem. During the council’s com-

mittee of the whole meeting, resident Marlo Webb said her family was currently on the waiting list for Camp Sunshine. Webb said while he family doesn’t currently use the city’s after school child care program, they are dependent on the camp as a part of summer childcare. “I understand those enrolled in the after school program and our city employees’

children are offered first refusal for the summer program and then registration is open to other families,” Webb said. “On that day of public registration, by 10 a.m. the classes were full and each grade had a significant waiting list.” Webb said her family was eighth on the waiting list and was not optimistic about their chances to send their daughSEE SUNSHINE, PAGE

441-lot subdivision could come soon to Gulf Shores Council hears concerns about PUD proposal By CRYSTAL COLE crystal@gulfcoastmedia.com

Gulf Shores officials got to hear staff and public comments about a proposed new 441-lot subdivision seeking planned unit development (PUD) approval near County Road 6 last week. Planning Director Andy Bauer told council members the developers were seeking to rezone 211 acres from R-1-4 medium density single family residential to a PUD. “Included in those 441 lots is a 40lot senior community,” Bauer said. “169 acres of wetland are on the site, but are not included in this proposal. The developer has indicated they will protect those wetlands, and the wetlands are buffered from the development by a required 30-foot buffer.” Bauer said the reasons for the proposed PUD request were the applicants were seeking to reduce setSEE SUBDIVISION, PAGE

Gulf Shores awarded 2018-2022 National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission, UAB, City of Gulf Shores chosen as hosts STAFF REPORTS The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission, along with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the City of Gulf Shores, will continue to host the National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championships through 2022. Last year, the inaugural NCAA-

sanctioned beach volleyball championship was held on the Gulf Shores Public Beach.
