you. You made history! You voted not to amend our covenants. On the down side of that, unfortunately a lot of members didn’t understand what they were voting for. We even had some residents calling people and posting flyers with completely false infor-mation about what they were voting for. As the communications committee chair, I’ve tried very hard to get accurate information out to the membership, so that’s frustrating on a personal level. I’ll just try harder. Since the meeting I’ve corresponded with dozens of people that voted “No” because of false information they were given by individual members that had no idea what they were talking about. All of those folks would like to see this vote proposed again. We’ll do a better job of clarifying exactly what the vote is, and what it isn’t, and you’ll know if you hear otherwise, you’re being deceived. To quote

win enough support for the update. Confusion occurred because of miscommunications, misunderstandings as well as some unfortunate misrepresentations. On behalf of the board we will strive to course correct that this year, improve our interaction dialogue and provide you with an improved message regarding this proposal. Bottom line, updating and strengthening our Architectural Guidelines is one item that if passed by the membership will enable our community to improve. More to follow this year. Let me also take time to thank our outgoing President Steve Sasser, who has graciously accepted a new role on the Board of Directors to serve as our new Vice- President. Steve has led our LF Association as President for 2-years. During his tenure has provided exceptional leadership, time and devotion to our community.

Notes from the President LF POA May 2017 Written by Victoria J. Phelps

Steve Sasser, Vice President

Steve Sasser, Vice President, LF POA Thanks to everyone who attended the annual meeting in March! We had a great turnout of around 200 residents! It was refreshing to see so many people interested and engaged in what’s going on in our neighborhood. Even more remarkable, for the first time in Lake Forest’s history, we were able to have a quorum of the membership and a vote that determined the result without any influence from our developer. The membership alone voted. If you turned in your ballot, congratula-tions to

Bernard Shaw, “Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance.” I have served as President of the BOD for the past two years. To say that it has been an honor and privilege is an understatement. I will forever be proud to have served in this capacity. To say that is has been a lot of work is a gross understatement. I wish I could quantify the phone calls, emails, meetings, and conversations I’ve had over the past couple of years. It is a staggering amount of time. In addition to having a family, including our 11 and 12 year old, I am my son’s assistant den leader in Cub Scouts, assistant coach to his football team, and with the help of my wife, run our electrical contracting business. I wouldn’t change a second of it. I’ve had a good run, but I’m ready to pass the torch! At the BOD’s annual organizational meeting HANDOFF continues on Page 2

Victoria J. Phelps President, LF POA Friends and neighbors, let’s get right to it. Thank you for a robust Annual Meeting, WOW! What a success! We heard you! The meeting was well attended, which was great to witness and provided an opportunity to hear some of your thoughts, your concerns and yes, your praises. With regard to the attempt to update our Architectural Guidelines, we “the Board” did not effectively communicate the need, nor present clear and concise language to

He has spent countless volunteer hours away from his family and his business contributing service hours acting on your behalf. He has strived to improve communications to our members with the written word through his monthly articles in the Lake Forester as well as with his efforts toward the development of our new and improved LF Facebook page and website. Through his monthly articles he has tried to inform and educate our community regarding our past history, our present conditions and our future potential. We collectively thank Steve for his service and welcome him to his new role as Vice-President. Thank you Steve!! Our board’s organizational efforts for the period that runs from just after the annual meeting March 2017 through March 2018 netted the following results. David CHARGE continues on Page 2

Golf Course reminders: Let faster players play through. Target time for 18 holes is 4 hours and 18 minutes. Double up on carts on the first tee. An extra set of tires is very detrimental to turf quality on the course if not needed. Especially with our tight fairways.

in March, I am proud to say that we unanimously elected Victoria Phelps to be our President for 2017 -2018. She’s been paramount with strategic and long rang planning, improving our grounds, and working behind the scenes with our city lead-ers as our city liaison. We have no doubt she will champion the roll of President just as well. Madam President, God speed and good luck! We’re behind you 100% The BOD elected me to

Golf tip of the month: Speed of play: “Ready Golf” has been the buzz word for quite some time in the golf world for speeding up play. Translated, this means if you are prepared to hit your shot and your fellow competitor is not then go ahead and make your stroke. This also goes for the teeing ground. Obviously be respectful of other players and let them know you are about to hit or putt. There are rules that the USGA has established for who has the honors, but there is nothing worse in golf than a 5-hour round.

Dueitt has been selected to continue to serve as our Secretary, Mary Ann Hampton has been selected to continue as Treasurer, and Dave Sumner has been selected to continue as Sargent at Arms. We thank not only our officers for their continued service but all of our board-members that serve at large both Ed Kirby and Richard Kersey. All of our board members comprise and also serve on various essential committees in order to facilitate better results from our Management Team provided by Vision Golf. Just to be clear all board positions are voluntary and there are no incentives afforded the board for their time of service. Lastly, I have been selected to serve as the President of our organization for the period mentioned above. As a former Military Officer I consider this role to be a duty and “A Charge to Keep.”

serve as Vice President this year, and I will continue to chair the communications committee. We’re still working on getting our new website www. lakeforestdaphne.com to being completed. It’s up and live, but we’re waiting on our accounting software, Jonas to get our member accounts online. For the time being www. lakeforestpoa.org will serve as our official website. We’d still love to share some of your pictures of our amenities on the new website. You can email them to me at s.sasser@

lakeforestpoa.org. If you haven’t already, like and follow our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ lakeforestdaphne for updates and info for all of our amenities. As always, I encourage you to come to our monthly stated meetings. We’d love to hear your con-cerns and comments, and likewise we want to give you accurate information about our association. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting at 7PM at the 19th Hole on Thursday 4/20/2017.

There are a core group of responsibilities associated with this role and pledge to continue to work on your behalf. If my efforts cannot produce positive results then I will step aside and leave it to others. Past years of volunteer efforts both on and off the board have taught me many lessons about our local community. One of the key lessons learned has been that to effect positive change in Lake Forest, is that, “slow and steady wins that race”. Positive change has many moving parts which demand persistent, effective, clear, and concise communication between our community members, the board, our management team, and with the City of Daphne. Together, with your help, input and support, we can work together to succeed in our collective endeavors to live up to our full potential as a community. In closing, a final thought regarding our annual meeting; Electrical Theory states that you need a magnetic field, a conductor

and motion between the two in order to generate electricity. In Lake Forest, we have always had the electrical field, represented by the community, we have always had the conductor, represented by board and management, but what has been missing is needed motion between the two in order to generate much electricity. Based on the results of the annual meeting we can anticipate a great deal of “electricity” generated this year. We look forward to improved communication as well as more listening and learning from you. Yacht Club Deck Sunsets are especially nice right now, as well as the Golf Course. Go Play!! All Pools open 1 May, so don’t forget to get your updated pool pass and enjoy some Swim Time. Hope everyone is enjoying the beauty of our local Azaleas and other Flora for as long as they last this Spring. “Onward and Upward” for all things Lake Forest. VJP

Daphne guarantees loan for Strike Soccer Club By CLIFF McCOLLUM cliff@gulfcoastmedia.com

Daphne’s City Council moved forward with an agreement guaranteeing a loan for a property purchase for a private youth sports organization. The Daphne Strike Soccer Club approached the city for help in guaranteeing a loan to purchase property for a soccer complex lo-

cated near the city’s Trione Park. City Attorney Jay Ross said the city had been studying the proposal for some time and had asked for a state attorney general’s opinion to see if guaranteeing the loan was something the city could legally do. “We received a reply from the attorney general’s office that said we could guarantee the loan for a private, non-profit organiza-

tion if the city council believes it serves a public purpose and supports economic development,” Ross said. “The resolution authorizes the city through the mayor to enter into a loan guarantee with Community Bank in the amount of $221,500 for the 12 months Strike needs to complete the fundraising to purchase the property,.” Ross said the agreement does

have several terms that are favorable to the city, if the Strike Club is unable to meet their financial obligations. “If Strike is unable to pay off the existing balance in 12 months, the city has a right to buy it,” Ross said. “In the interim, if they sell it before the note comes due, we have the right of first refusal SEE LOAN, PAGE

In the wake of the county commission extending the penny tax for Baldwin County schools, Spanish Fort city leaders talked last week about what their city could do to help further educational funding for their schools. Mayor Mike McMillan said the issue of providing money to the schools had been a discussion for several years.

Why I Moved to Lake Forest Written By: Tomasina Werner It has been suggested to this LFPOA Board of Directors, to revive the column, “Why I Moved to Lake Forest,” that appeared in “The Lake Forester” in past years. It had discontinued due to lack of reporter. Since I originated this column while serving as Editor of, “The Lake Forester,” I agreed to see if it would be of interest at this time. It was fascinating reading their stories. They were from many different parts of the world. We will be seeking those who would like to share their reasons for choosing Lake Forest as their home – where they moved from; how long they have lived here; and what they like most about Lake Forest? Many of our residents have lived here over 30 years. I have lived here 23 years. The longer I live here, the

better I like it. My daughter & family lives here and I have a son living in Spanish Fort. The thing that brought my husband, Peter, and me here from Atlanta, GA, was a phone call from my daughter, Melinda Youngblood, who lived in Mobile, saying she was expecting their first child. Within a few weeks, March 1994, we had purchased a home in Lake Forest because we could not find what we wanted in Mobile -- and awaited the arrival of grandson, Nicholas, in August. It was love at first sight as we entered the north entrance to Lake Forest. The beauty of the huge trees, foliage & variety of architecture; with hills & winding roads were captivating. Peter’s occupation had taken us to other parts of the country for the past 25 years. It was good to be home again, near the children. In no time at all we found

everything we needed just outside the entrances to our neighborhood. I became active in the Lake Forest Women’s Club & Garden Club; also, the Lake Forest Improvement Committee. I joined the Daphne Beautification Committee and attended the Daphne City Council meetings. Living in Lake Forest offered me so much to do & enjoy. Best of all, I watched my grandson grow up in Lake Forest & graduate from the University of Al: and, see my Midwestern husband learn to relax & enjoy the southern lifestyle. I will welcome your comments. E-mail me tomasinawerner@gmail. com or call me at 626-0227. Going forward let’s “Cherish Yesterday, Dream Tomorrow and Live Today to its fullest” – right here in beautiful Lake Forest!

Lake Forest Garden Club

Photos:

Taken by: Linda Locklin Submitted by: Lura Kauffman The April meeting of the Lake Forest Garden Club was held on April 6, 2017, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 19 members and 2 guests present. President Dana Sawyer announced that Sue Crank has completed her move to South Carolina. Terri Farlow will take over her place as 2nd Vice-President to finish out this year and will serve again next year. Janet Pruitt introduced LuAnn Akridge for her talk on Hydrangeas for the Coastal South. Ms. Akridge said that

Hydrangeas prefer moist, well drained, acid soil which has been well mulched, preferably to a depth of two inches. They should be watered one to two inches per week and should not be planted in dense shade. Hydrangeas should be fertilized with a balanced 10-10-10 or 126-6 fertilizer using 2 doses of 4 ounces in the spring and again after their blooming season. Plants can be fertilized in June except during drought conditions and should not be fertilized after August. When purchasing a fertilizer it is best to get a slow release fertilizer and

remember DO NOT use liquid fertilizer such as Miracle Grow because the plants will grow quickly and be very green but will not have flowers! The type of soil in which Hydrangeas are planted determines the color of the bloom. Acid soil leads to blue blooms and alkaline soil leads to pink blooms. If your soil is acid add lime to produce pink flowers (add one tablespoon lime to one gallon of water and pour around the base of the plant in March, April and May) - to enhance blue color use aluminum sulfate. In the coastal south, Hydrangeas should be pruned in January and February. To prune, cut back the upper 50% of the

Hostesses Dana Sawyer, Lura Kauffman, Tomasina Werner (and Dottie Zimmer not pictured.)

Speaker LuAnn Akridge and First Vice-President Janet Pruitt stems. This will make a more compact plant. Every three years you should prune the largest branches and the tiny branches to maintain good structure. Plants that are not pruned produce fewer flowers. When purchasing hydrangeas, it is better to buy three gallon plants because their root systems are better developed. Ms. Arkidge had many beautiful pictures of hydrangeas to share and showed us the difference between “mopheads,” Oakleaves, smooth or wild hydrangeas, paniculatas, serrated hyd r a ng eas a nd eve n c l i mb i ng hydrangeas. Did you know that the Oakleaf

Hydrangea is Alabama’s state wildflower? It was an excellent talk and she had two hand-outs on Hydrangeas. See a member for a copy. After refreshments, Linda Locklin wished “happy birthday” to our members with April Birthdays and the March Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports were approved. O u r May lu nc he o n menu was discussed and members were reminded of the Annual Plant and Garden Art Swap. The Nominating Committee announced the proposed new officers for the 20172018 year: President: Dana Sawyer; First

Vice-President: Karolla Buyse; Second VicePresident: Terri Farlow; Secretary: Linda Ruck; Treasurer: Dianne Foster. Horticulture Awards: First Place – Terri Farlow (Iris – Full Eclipse), Second Place – Lura Kauffman (red Amaryllis bulb grown from seed), Third Place – Ruth Grose (4th of July rose.) 50/50 and Door Prizes – Both 50/50 drawings were claimed by Sylvia Dowdle. Door Prizes were awarded to Doretta Bottenus, Elaine Maxime, Judy Simpson, Tomasina Werner, Lura Kauffman and Sylvia Dowdle.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the March Fishing Seminar at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The turnout was great and hopefully everyone gained a better understanding of how to fish for speckle trout, redfish and flounder in the Bay and Delta. May is finally here and the water temperatures have risen to the low 80’s to mid 70’s. The bay and rivers have finally cleared up after all the rain we got this year. Salinity of the water is about 8 ppt in D’Olive bay and the causeway. This means flounder are on the points to the North Pass and the redfish are all along the causeway. Trout are moving everywhere to keep up with the migrating shrimp. What this really means is the warmer weather makes for great fishing as spring arrives in the bay and Delta. Along with warmer days, the fishing action will definitely heat up on the north end of the bay. These fish can be caught in a number of ways including fishing a shrimp on a Carolina rig

Billy Harrell along the edges of drop offs, throwing jig heads with scented grubs, such as gulps along the same drop offs, the ole bass technique of using spinner baits along grass banks and the trusty popping cork with a live shrimp. Flounder will start their migration from the Gulf and channels up the bay for deeper water for the spring and summer. When flounder fishing, make sure you fish your bait on the bottom with a finger mullet or bull minnow. Another great way to catch trout and redfish is to look for diving birds and ease or drift into them casting toward the divers. Also, look for the telltale signs like fish slicks or greasy spots on top of

the water, which means the trout are feeding on little minnows and shrimp. Redfish will be in their usual spots too. This is usually over oyster beds, shells and along the points of rivers and channels that dump into larger bodies of water. This is my favorite time of the year to fish, because the conditions are perfect and the temperature is pleasant to be out on the water. Now is the time to get out and enjoy the bay and delta, because if you are not catching fish, you are not fishing. Mark your calendars for an event that happens down at the Lake Forest Marina Fishing Pier every year in May. The Annual Youth Fishing Tournament takes place May 20, 2017, at 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This fishing tournament is open to all children between the ages of 3 to 13. Participants receive a free lunch and soft drinks will be served after the awards ceremony. Till next month, keep a tight line. Billy Harrell, Harbor Master

Tennis Tip

tennis and swim camp on the Eastern Shore. We offer 7 weeks of camp throughout the summer. Our camps run Monday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. It is a great camp for beginner tennis kids. We hit the courts at 9:30 AM, feed them lunch from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and then off to the pool for fun swimming. Pick-up is at 2:00 PM.

Just a reminder that we have a ball machine that can be placed on any court for use and it is free to LFRC members. It is a great way to practice up on your strokes. We can help set it up for you and give you a quick tutorial on it. Call 251-648-3952 to reserve a time.

OF THE MONTH

When hitting your two-handed backhand make sure to feel your right hand start the “pull” and then finish with your left. It is very important to remember this because one of the most common mistakes is to feel too much of the left hand in the beginning of the stroke.

POOL SEASON 2017

Pool season is upon us and the Lake Forest Staff is gearing up and getting ready for the busy season and the influx of residents who want to utilize their pools. We’ve taken suggestions from the membership into consideration and will be implementing a new procedure for the 2017 season. First and foremost, you must be a property owner in good standing on your POA dues or have a valid membership

Montclair Pool

Kid's Play Area at the Montclair Pool

that entitles you to pool access, in order to use the pools. Paid for pool parties will no longer be available because many residents want to utilize the pools and it is not feasible to shut down an entire pool for 3 hours to rent, while other members are denied access. We want to encourage you to utilize your amenities and hope you enjoy this years 2017 swim season.
