Orange Beach Fire Rescue responded to a fully involved fire at a single family residential home on Safe Harbor Drive April 28. Battalion Chief Kevin Lanford said the city’s crew was able to respond quickly to the event. “The call came in about eight minutes after 9 o’clock,” Lanford said. “They reported a structure fire at this location. The first units arrived on scene within five minutes and found a fully involved building.” Lanford said when crews arrived the fire was already spreading quickly throughout the building.

“The structure is a two-story structure, and fire was shown on the deck and moving into the main living floor, which would be the second floor,” Lanford said. “We had a full response. We had approximately 28 firefighters on the scene, and had the fire under control in about 28 to 35 minutes. We were able to turn the units loose a little after midnight.” Lanford said several factors contributed to the blaze being a challenging one to fight. “We had a lot of wind coming off of the water,” Lanford said. “Wind fuels the fire. It can increase the heat, and the smoke shifted several times.” Lanford said the materials the home was built from were also a contributing factor. “It SEE FIRE, PAGE

Gulf Shores city officials took time last week to honor Dr. Ernie Rosado, who recently retired as principal of Gulf Shores High School. The council presented Rosado with a certificate of appreciation during the meeting for his many years of service to the community. “It is my pleasure to present this certificate of appreciation for your active participation, energetic leadership, unfailing commitment to the students and faculty of Gulf Shores High School and for your dedicated service to this community, which has been instrumental in bringing about the excellent quality of life that the citizens of the city of Gulf Shores have today,” Mayor pro tem Phillip Harris said. Rosado said he was grateful for the council’s recognition. “It’s been a great run,” Rosado said. “The students, the parents, the community - everyone’s been just great. I never thought I’d be here for nine years, but it’s been a good run.” The council also took time to proclaim May as National Bike Month within the city. “Gulf Shores’ road and trail system attracts bicyclists each year, SEE ROSADO, PAGE
