In March, these four joined students from throughout the state for a trip to Montgomery. Their experience included tours of the Civil Rights Memorial, the Capitol and the State House Judicial Building, as well as question and answer sessions with elected officials. In June, Bankston, Jernigan, Randall and Sarcar embarked upon a week-long adventure with 1,500 students

from across the nation in Washington, D.C. Their trip included visits to the U.S. Capitol, the Korean and Vietnam memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial. After a long and highly contested public hearing about a more than 400-unit subdivision on County Road 6, Gulf Shores City Council voted 4-1 to approve the new development. Adventura’s PUD calls for 404 single family homes with lot sizes ranging from 6,240-15,000 square feet. The subdivision would be rolled out in three phases over ten years. With the Sportsplex and other large residential developments on County Road 6, many speaking out against the development were concerned about traffic. Steve Griffin, city administrator, said improvements were coming to the intersection of that road and Highway 59. “Now that I’ve driven hat road firsthand, I can tell you I’ve had to wait four and five light cycles sometimes to get out,” Griffin said. “At our last retreat, the council directed Cindy (King) and I to budget into our ten-eat capital improvement plans to SEE SUBDIVISION, PAGE

Gulf Shores approves controversial new subdivision

Getting to and from the beach is about to get faster and cheaper with the new Beach Express GO! Program. Beach Express Bridge operator, American Roads, will immediately lower tolls through Labor Day week, and increase traffic flow over the bridge. The company

is also investing $5 million for long-term improvements that will further relieve traffic congestion by spring of 2018. Going into effect June 28, Beach Express GO! will cut summer toll rates by more than 20% for visitors. Some local residents will see savings of more than 70 percent below the standard rate. Designed to

immediately ease congestion on Highway 59, the program includes a plan to move traffic more freely over the bridge during periods of high demand. “After Labor Day, we will start construction for the improvements, includ-

We’re hoping by calendar year 2018-2019 we would be able to get with the county and four-lane that all the way to the Sportsplex.” The proposed land sits in close proximity to the city’s landfill, something Planning Director Andy Bauer said the developer accounted for. “The city asked the developer to perform some environmental assessments to determine what, if any, environmental concerns were

applicable to the property,” Bauer said. “The developer did a Phase I environmental assessment and a limited Phase II environmental assessment. The Phase I assessment basically said there are some recognized environmental concerns nearby this development. Phase II went a lot more in depth. Temporary monitoring wells were installed which allowed them to study the subsurface soil and water conditions. The results of those studies indicated there are no hazardous subsurface soil or water conditions that exist on the property today.” The city hired its own testing lab to check the conditions as well, and the results were confirmed by the second

lab. Another large concern from neighboring property owners was the lot sizes proposed for Adventura. As it stands, the land is zoned R-!-4 and R-1-15, with minimum lot sizes of 70-feet wide. More than 30 percent of the lots in the new development would be 52.5-feet wide. Many citizens felt the smaller lots would allow for more “cookiecutter” style homes, comparing it to the Audubon subdivision on County Road 10. Others argued families wouldn’t want to purchase and live in homes that small and that those homes would be used as rental properties. A representative for the developer and

Mayor Robert Craft argued for the smaller lots, citing diversity of residents. “Craft Farms has been mentioned a lot out here, and we’ve got some angled “Z” lots that have a zero lot line on one side and they are somewhere around 35foot width,” Craft said. “It adds to the character of Craft Farms because you’ve got St. Andrews and St. Andrews East which are the same type of lots. You’ve got Pinehurst which is a much smaller lot and the rest of them are ordinary 100-foot lots. Then you’ve got the Estates which has larger lots. So, the variety created a unique opportunity in Craft Farms where a lot of different people could live there together.”

This little verse is framed on the wall in my office, a gift from my mother, who remembers listening to me quote that verse to myself in the night whenever I became fearful in the dark. The line was penned by King David as he reflected on his own fears during a dark time. He had been running for his life from King Saul, and, in a moment of sheer panic, he attempted to throw in his lot with the Philistines in the city of Gath (Goliath’s hometown no less!). When the city leaders figured out who David was, they seized him as the enemy he was and brought him before the king, who was most unhappy. To extricate himself from the mess he had made, David pretended to be insane and was run out of town. Humbled, he made his way to En-Gedi, an oasis in the desert, a stronghold where he often met with God, a resting place where he should have run from the beginning. “What time I am afraid, I will ______.” How do you most often finish that sentence? What places does your anxiety push you? Despair? Control? Anger?

Escape? Patience? Openness? Worship? Where do you wind up: En-Gedi or Gaza? Fear can bring us to either place. “What time I am afraid, I will eat until my physical fullness crowds out my spiritual emptiness.” “What time I am afraid, I will blame others so that I don’t have to deal with my own insecurities.” “What time I am afraid, I will work extra hours to prove my worth to myself and others.” Lots of things promise security, but only one Person can deliver. The only way to get to En-Gedi is by walking into the wilderness. Let your fears bring you to the Savior. His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Kayaking holds therapeutic value for military veterans

Heroes on the Water is one of two national, non-profit kayaking organizations for veterans and active duty servicemembers that have opened chapters in south Alabama. Heroes on the Water gives participants the opportunity for kayak-fishing.

Team River Runner focuses on organizing events for military members and veterans that offer flat water kayaking and whitewater kayaking. Both organizations aim to provide their members an outlet from day-to-day stress and a place to fellowship with other military members. By BROOKE CONRAD Tim Burrus, Center Commander for Spanish Fort Recruiting, said he was ready to walk away from 17 years of military service earlier this year, due to the stress of his job. Then, in March, he went kayaking with Heroes on the Water. Now he kayaks every day and does not plan to retire for another several years. “Every morning before work, I go fishing,” he said. “It’s the only time I have for myself to actually be calm and not have to worry about anything. It’s just me and the water and my fishing pole, and that’s it.” Within the past two years, two national non-profit kayaking organizations for veterans and active duty servicemembers opened

new chapters in southern Alabama. Heroes on the Water gives participants the opportunity for kayak-fishing alongside experienced local fishermen, while Team River Runner focuses on flat water kayaking and whitewater kayaking. Both organizations aim to provide current and former servicemen and women with an outlet from dayto-day stress, as well as an opportunity to interact with other military members. “I don’t always understand why or how, but it relieves the stress,” said Brian Carson, coordinator for Heroes on the Water’s South Alabama chapter. “On the water, you just unplug and disengage from your day-to-day routine and think about things you normally don’t think about.

“We’ve had people go through this program and say ‘I was in a dark place, but I was able to go kayak or go fishing,’ and this hit the reset button for them,” he said. Carson said that many of the veterans who come to the events struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions. Some have even found themselves on the verge of suicide. “We have some young men and young women who come to you and tell you that you may have saved their life,” Carson said. “If we make a difference in one veteran’s life, then it’s worth it.” One unique aspect of Team River Runner’s organization is that it provides adaptive kayaks for veterans with disabilities. Some kayak seats, for example, are specifically equipped with full support for veterans with spinal cord injuries, while other kayaks can be adapted using closed foam padding to accommodate amputees. Team River Runner was also able to help a veteran who lost almost all of his fingers due to a chemical injury by customizing a paddle with bicycle inner tubes, zip ties, and other adaptive equipment. The coordinator for Team River Runner’s local chapter, Tonya Butler-Collins, said that although the organization helps veterans with physical disabilities, most of the injured veterans struggle with conditions that are non-physical,

such as PTSD, depression, military sexual trauma and traumatic brain injuries. “The physically disabled population is about 1 percent,” she said. “The rest is wounds you cannot see. Sometimes putting yourself in a boat and getting on the water helps veterans to be able to function again with family and with stressful work situations.” In addition to providing adaptive kayaks, Team River Runner is also one of the only organizations to teach blind veterans to kayak independently. Some of these veterans have taken on challenges such as the Yellowstone River and the Grand Canyon. Both Team River Runner and Heroes on the Water plan at least one event per month, with some events geared for the veterans’ entire family. Butler-Collins said Team River Runner is active most weekends or whenever there is a personal request. “I get phone calls on a daily basis from vets struggling with things like family life, and they call me and ask, ‘Are you free? Can we get in a boat and just be out on the water?’ And sometimes there’s no conversation whatsoever. We just get out on the water and let the water do its thing. It’s kind of our own little sanctuary,” she said. Both organizations aim not only to get veterans out on the water, but also to allow them to build relationships with other veterans during the process. “The military is a huge

brotherhood,” a co-coordinator for Heroes on the Water’s local chapter, Chad Thomas, said. “When you go in, you’ll step in front of a bullet for them, and then when you get out and go home, it’s totally different,” Thomas said. “They were tighter than your own family, and the veterans miss that. And this is a way to give them that contact again.” Both organizations are currently seeking donations, and almost all donation money goes straight to the local chapters. Both organizations also emphasize that they want to see veterans enjoying their time on the water and

do not ask about military experiences or injuries. “To us, a veteran is a veteran is a veteran,” Carson said. “We don’t ask about it. All we ask is whether they are servicemen or veterans.” Nevertheless, Carson emphasized that many of the veterans have done remarkable things during their military service. “That’s the reason it’s called Heroes on the Water,” Carson said. “Even though they don’t think of themselves as heroes, if you think of some of the things they’ve done and sacrifices they’ve made, they really are heroes.”

Foley grad receives prestigious foreign language scholarship

Tiara Rowell Cottey College thirdyear student Tiara Rowell has received a scholarship from The Critical Language Scholarship Program. With an acceptance rate of less than 10 percent, the CLS is one of the most competitive scholarships in the United States and one of the most prestigious foreign language scholarships for U.S. students. The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Rowell is a 2014 graduate of Foley High School.

Her parents are Bill and Linda Rowell and her grandmother is Sharon Rowell, all residents of Foley. The CLS Program offers approximately 600 students from the U.S. the opportunity to participate in an intensive language study aboard. This nationally competitive program funds students who study one of the 14 critical need foreign languages and is part of the National Security Language Initiative. The 14 critical languages include Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish and Urdu. Rowell will be studying Bahasa (Indonesian) for her language. “My mother is Indonesian,” she said. “I have family in Jakarta that I have never met. I have always been interested in visiting the country and getting in touch with my

cultural roots. Luckily, this seemed like the perfect opportunity.” Last month Rowell attended a two-day orientation in Washington D.C. before flying to Indonesia. “The CLS Indonesian program will take place in Malang, Indonesia, and I will be studying at the Universitas Negeri Malang,” Rowell said. “We study almost every day at the university for about five hours and then we will take trips and do immersion-like activities on the weekends. After all the hard work the program ends on August 8.” Immediately after she graduates from the program, Rowell intends to become CELTA certified. The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults is a highly re-

spected credential that will prepare Rowell to teach abroad. “I think my liberal arts degree has taught me a lot about the different areas of academic study, and this path seems like a good start for me. After I become certified, my hope is to teach in Indonesia,” Rowell said. Cottey College, is owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood making it the only non-sectarian college in the U.S. owned by women for women. Cottey draws students from more than 40 states and 20 countries with an emphasis on leadership programming through the Serenbetz Institute for Women’s Leadership, Social Responsibility and Global Awareness.

If the bidding seems absurd, it can be explained by remembering that in auction, the bidding structure was far different from what it is today in contract bridge. In those days, a game or slam bonus was awarded whether or not it was bid -- provided the number of tricks a declarer took added up to a game or slam. Lengthy bidding sequences were unusual, and opening with one notrump was a very common practice, regardless of distribution. Lenz (West) led the queen of hearts, disregarding partner’s spade bid. East, after communing with himself at length, signaled with the ten in-

stead of playing the ace. Declarer heaved a huge sigh of relief, won the heart with the king and cashed six diamonds and six clubs to score a grand slam. East could have turned the result completely around had he played the ace of hearts and caught the king. On the ten-of-hearts return by East, Lenz could overtake with the jack and lead a low heart to East’s seven. East’s queen-of-spades return would then allow Lenz to cash his hearts and return a spade, whereupon East would run his spades and the defenders would score all 13 tricks. You don’t often see a hand where a defender’s misplay costs his side 26 tricks -- but, for whatever it’s worth, this is one of them. s we take a mid-year look at Alabama politics, it has been an eventful first half of the year.

It is not every year that a governor resigns mid-term. Governor Robert Bentley’s resignation from office on April 10 will more than likely be the most newsworthy story of the year. Bentley’s saga had begun 18 months ago. His troubles stemmed from his relationship with his primary and probably only advisor, who was married to a quiet man whom Bentley placed in a vague $90,000 position with the state. It was a titillating story that led to an investigation and later finding by the State Ethics Commission that there was reasonable evidence that Bentley may have violated the law. Facing probable impeachment by the Legislature, Bentley resigned in disgrace. The most noteworthy event was the appointment of our Junior U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions to the powerful post of U.S. Attorney General. Sessions was one of President Donald Trump’s first Cabinet appointments. Sessions departure from the Senate seat left open his coveted post. In his waning days as governor, Bentley interviewed about 20 qualified candidates for the interim appointment. Bentley eventually appointed Alabama

However, this may be a prudent call. It may be wiser to wait until the federal courts decree what they want from the state. This could be a paramount issue that requires a Special Session. The Republican majority ramrodded a reapportionment plan through the Senate and House over adamant disapproval of black Democrats. The final authority on whether it will stand rests with the federal courts. Until this is decided, there is a cloud over the upcoming legislative races. Republican legislators may have overplayed their hand this time. A federal judge may send Alabama’s demographics to a computer in New York to draw the lines and several of them may find themselves in the same districts several counties away. See you next week. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Some thoughts on the Spanish Fort book list Dear Editor, Thank you for your excellent article on a Baldwin County high school teaching terrorism to our students. It brought national attention to the hate and anti-Americanism being taught in our public schools on the eve of the Fourth of July. For those in the back of the room, there has been some objection to a Spanish Fort high school teacher assigning, for three years running, a summer reading list of 30 “conservative” books, topped by five by Michael Weiner, who writes under the penname “Savage”. Weiner is savage all right. The pop right-wing political writer and hate-radio host promotes extremism and is one of 16 international figures banned from entering the United Kingdom for “seeking to

provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred.” His “Savage Nation” hate radio show was kicked off the air for his diatribes and the Times of London wrote that he will go down in history as “an apostle of hatred.” He is on the short-list of terrorists the UK says are “considered to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence.” He’s in good company. Alabama’s own Stephen Douglas Black, former KKK Grand Wizard and American Nazi Party member who did time in the federal penitentiary for terrorism is another American on the UK list. Most of the others are, predictably, from the Middle East. Black runs Stormfront, the internet’s first major racial hate site. It is the most popular online hate resource in

the United States, so if you’re wondering about all the letters and social media chatter defending the Spanish Fort reading list, go figure, The local teacher in question has an online blog called ponderthatliberty, opposing the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. It is titled “The Pledge of Allegiance is a Lie.” Ponder that, gentle readers, as we approach the 4th of July and celebrate our precious freedoms. Lest I be accused of being one of the many “outsiders” who have had letters to the editor published in the Gulf Coast Media newspapers, many supporting the controversial book list, let me disabuse you of that notion. My grandfather’s grandfather helped settle Montrose. As former director of the Fort Morgan national historic landmark here in Baldwin County, it pains me to see our area in the national spotlight like this after we worked so hard to

live down the “Redneck Riviera” moniker and to promote our beautiful coastal county and its wonderful people and places. Regarding the book list, I have a dog in the fight. My grandson, who is in this advanced honors class on US government and economics, brought that list home a couple weeks ago and and asked me if I had any of those books. As a historian with a political science minor, I have a comprehensive home library of related works. I laughed. After I got over my astonishment about Savage and the likes of Ann Coulter on a reading list designed to prepare our high school seniors in AP (advanced placement) classes for their college entrance exams, I directed him to the library. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Spanish Fort reading list not balanced in views As a product of and employee of public schools for sixty plus years, I was appalled to read the “reading list” for the AP Government class at Spanish Fort High School. First, this list is not a “balanced” list of different political views - a fair list

would include books of different viewpoints - conservative, moderate, and liberal. Second, these books do not meet the rigor of what is expected in an AP class. Third, from the comments about this teacher’s class presentations, it is my understanding that the presentations are narrow minded and not open to differing opinions. The

essence of a quality education is the total discussion of an issue from all sides, not just from one side. I am thankful that the teachers I had through high school and college, as well as my parents, exposed me to varied political views. I only wish all young people could be allowed that privilege. Oh, I know they pulled the book list and said nothing to see here, let’s move along, but this is a textbook example of our children being fed this garbage in our public schools. Weiner, aka Savage, has another book titled “The Art of Feeding Children Well”. He’s been feeding their young minds well here in Baldwin County all right. We are better than this. Not all terrorists are Muslims. Some are home-grown white-

supremacists and Nazis from Alabama. I’m standing my ground and I will not stand for this in my county. Please join me in speaking out against wrong and glorifying domestic terrorists in our schools. And everyone have a glorious Fourth in the USA and LA (Lower Alabama y’all) and proudly pledge your allegiance to our hardearned American flag of freedom. Paying it forward I am sure you pass people on the street, at a gas station, perhaps even in your place of work that you don’t really think about. I mean really think about. I’m sure the same could be said of them. In a fast-paced environment full of worry and stress, it is hard to think of much else except yourself and your troubles. It isn’t a fault, it is natural. But I want to challenge you to watch how you treat people you meet. That face behind the counter, that voice on the other end of the line, that mirror image of you struggling to make it in this mad world. How hard would it be to offer a friendly smile to a young, frazzled mom or hold the door for a

delivery man with his hands full? I am not saying you should do something extravagant. Even a nice compliment on a necklace or t-shirt could help someone who hasn’t heard a nice thing in days, even weeks, smile. We are gifted with intelligence and we are a group of free people. We could put our minds and actions into doing something to help our fellow man. Yet, we find it easier to be cold and selfish. Not everything that is natural to humans is right. As habitual creatures, we are quick to judge anything about a person without ever knowing them. The Earth wouldn’t be a better place if everyone was a certain way, a cer-

If a series called “Snowfall” is premiering in July, chances are good it’s about a different kind of “snow.” Indeed, that’s the case with the FX drama that begins Wednesday, July 5. With moviemaker John Singleton (“Boyz N the Hood”) among its creators and executive producers, it deals with the drug trade in mid-1980s Los Angeles — specifically, the then-nascent crack cocaine business — as mirrored by several characters destined to cross paths: ambitious street hustler Franklin Saint (played by Damson Idris); criminal-connected wrestler Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta); rogue CIA agent Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson); and Lucia Villanueva (Emily Rios), a Mexican crime kingpin’s daughter. “We’re not doing a documentary,” stresses Dave Andron (“Justified”), also a “Snowfall” creator and executive producer. “We’re not basing this on a true story,

but, at the same time, we are operating in three very distinct worlds in this show. We’re in South Central, we’re in the CIA world, and we’re in East Los Angeles as well. “It was really important to us (with) each of those worlds to be really thorough about all of it, obviously starting with South Central, which is where most of our show takes place. This came from John (Singleton), so we couldn’t ask for a better resource than that for the authenticity of that world.” Los Angeles native Singleton says the city, “for me, is full of villages. It’s like all these disparate villages all around the whole city, and when you go from one world to another, you can’t help but open your eyes and see a difference. The way the people were interacting was different; the way you were interacting with people was different, and it forms a character. And I think that was kind of a risk, in particular for this character that Damson plays.” Though his “Snowfall” alter ego is very American,

actor Idris isn’t. “I’m from Peckham, London,” he reports, adding that “a lot of the issues which happened in South Central definitely happened in my community ... maybe not in the ’80s, but particularly now, so I could relate to that side of it. I think the first time I watched ”Boyz N the Hood,“ I must have been about maybe 10 or 11, and I was fascinated with (that) world. “It was literally my first eye-opener to America,” Idris notes. “I always thought it was, like, Brad Pitt; I thought it was just Hollywood. And then I saw this whole different side to it, which kind of linked me to where I was from, and then I was instantly linked to it.” Singleton acknowledges “Snowfall” may seem like a period piece to some viewers, but he reasons, “Then there are other people who are coming in sight unseen, who weren’t even born then, who will watch it with totally new and clean eyes — and it won’t be a nostalgic thing for them. It will be a reflection of their contemporary lives, and that’s what we really hope.”

9 p.m. on FX Snowfall John Singleton is a co-creator and producer on this docuseries that reveals the “origin story” of crack cocaine in 1983 Los Angeles and how the drug radically affected modern culture. Events are viewed through such characters as young street entrepreneur Franklin Saint (Damson Idris); Mexican wrestler Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) and Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative fleeing a dark past.
