Dollar General decision pushed again By CRYSTAL COLE crystal@gulfcoastmedia.com

Orange Beach council members once again tabled a proposal that would allow a new Dollar General store to be built on Hwy. 161, marking the third time the council has delayed a decision on the store. Despite plans presented by the developer that reflected a redesigned exterior to better fit in with the city’s coastal aesthetic, several council members said they remained unsure the proposed location was a good fit for the store. “We are very committed to preserving the neighborhoods we have remaining, and I think the intrusion of this very, very busy store, the increased traffic and the difficulty getting in and

out will be detrimental to this area,” Councilwoman Annette Mitchell said. Mitchell said she felt the store redesign was nice but she still had qualms about the location. “I applaud those changes,” Mitchell said. “I think that’s very attractive, and I think it would look very, very nice anywhere in Orange Beach - except there.” The location is currently zoned neighborhood business, and Bob Broadway of Broadway Group, the group behind the development, said the store would fit within that zoning designation. This private launch and park abuts the proposed site of a new ramp. By JOHN MULLEN Islander contributor

PERDIDO BEACH – This was indeed a public hearing. And, to the chagrin of a sweltering crowd in the bays of the Perdido Beach Volunteer Fire Department, not a meeting that would end in a vote on a controversial boat launch and park in the town. “Public is the word we’re having a problem with, I think,” Kathy Coate said. “I don’t think its boat launch. I think it’s the word public.”

INDE X

Coate is a town resident and part owner of a private launch located next to the proposed site for the new launch. A vote on the rezoning of a city-owned parcel to allow for a park and boat launch isn’t likely until the next regular council meeting Aug. 17. Town leaders hope to use leftover BP grant money, $675,750, to turn 2.6 acres on the corner of State Street and Tuscaloosa Drive into a park and boat launch. State is one SEE OUTCRY, PAGE
