66th Baldwin Fair Fair Manager’s Message

The Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association will sponsor the 66th Annual Baldwin County Fair, themed “Ribbons & Rides.” The Fair begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20th and runs through midnight Saturday the 24th, 2016. “Ribbons & Rides” describes all the main events taking place during the fair. The Creative Arts Competition exhibits are judged to receive winning “Ribbons” and the Rodeo, Barrel Racing and Arnold Amusements, Inc. Midway provides the “Rides”. September is the month that ushers in fair season, the beginning of all the twenty six Association of Alabama’s Fall Agricultural Fairs. Fall Fairs begin in September and end in November each year. Our fair is one of the state’s earliest scheduled fall fairs. All of the Agricultural Fairs in Alabama are organized with the same purpose, to emphasis education, entertainment and economic opportunities. I have visited almost all of the Alabama’s agricultural fairs, many in other states and all are composed of activities of both rural and city lifestyles. The opportunity for youth and adult organizations to engage in competitive agricultural themed programs is the role of each sponsoring organization. For the past 66 years, the Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association has provided buildings and fairground space for all these activities. The Baldwin County Fair agenda sponsors social & competitive activities open for all citizens of our county. Students, Senior Citizens, Military Personnel, Veterans, and other special populations have a targeted invitation to attend the fair. Children under the age of 12 years of age pay no fair entry fee, and parking on our fairgrounds has always been “free of charge”. The Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association’s board of directors meets all requirements of the Alabama Association of Fairs, Merit Award Program and the State Department of Agriculture and Industries. In 2015, the Baldwin County Fair was awarded special recognition for performance in the Class AAA

as an Excellent Fair. I was voted the 2015 Best Fair Manager of the year, by the Association of Alabama Fairs. During this past year, the Baldwin County Fair was honored to receive a special donation gift from the Fred and Vivian Urban Family. Joan Urban and her husband Captain Mark Robinson presented two A.B. (Sonny) and Melinda Hankins antique metal toys, brought proudly represent the Baldwin County Fair. from Germany when Joan’s grandparents immigrated to Ellis Island, in New York. The family originally settled and worked in Chicago, before moving to Alabama to a farm next to the Floyd Ellison farm. Joan’s brother Freddie and his young buddies spent many rainy days playing with these toys. Joan is the daughter of Fred and Vivian Urban who lived in Rosinton Community. See the photo inside. In addition to all the Creative Arts exhibits, booth displays, livestock, rodeo, and barrel racing, there is one magical out of town guest that arrives, the Midway. It appears from somewhere with fascinating splendor, spreading joy and excitement, then disappears, as if never having been there at all. What would a Fair be without a Midway? Hope you have as good of a time as Melinda and I did last year,

From The Office Of

John McMillan

Alabama’s Commisioner of Agriculture and Industries It’s That Time Again… Going to Your County Fair!

Some of my most vivid memories as a kid growing up in Baldwin County were of going to the county fair. I look forward to going every year. There is something reassuring about going to the fair that no matter how the world changes, every year about this time there will always be a celebration of the bounty of our land; 2016 is no exception. John McMillan The nearly 600,000 Alabama farmers, foresters and agribusiness workers are responsible for contributing over $70 billion a year to our state’s economy. They are the backbone of our economy, working hard every day to help feed and clothe the world. Please take this opportunity while you are at the fair to visit the exhibits and learn as much as you can about the livestock, local foods, and those who produce them. Experience all of it, as these events are about where we live and the people who work to make the fairs so successful. As your Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries, I am honored to be a part of our Alabama county fairs and being with fellow Alabamians who support them. You and your family, as a result of attending and supporting your county fair, are a part of an incredible resource. The employees of the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries send best wishes to all who make our county fairs a success each year. Thank you for your continued support for Alabama farmers, foresters, and agribusiness! Sincerely,

John McMillian Commissioner

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

Nikayla Brill T

his year’s Baldwin County Fair featured Cowgirl is 15 year old Nikayla Brill of Summerdale, AL. Here are a few things about what this busy full-time cowgirl has been up to and what she does to train on a daily basis. A normal day for Nikayla usually consists of waking up to the responsibility of tending to 11 horses, riding and exercising her four personal horses, and practicing for her events. She competes in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying and Girls Cutting. She also works the barrels and poles in her private arena with peers, ropes her calf dummy, ties goats, practices on live calves at PCA rodeo producer, Mr. Bo Campbell’s ranch and lopes cutting horses at Circle S in Summerdale, owned by Austin Shepard. Brill recently returned home from a summer full of rodeo, where she competed at a national high school level. Her journey started when she set out for a three week trip on July 5 to the first stop in Decatur, TX at the NRS Ranch and Training Center for the Roy Cooper Jr. World Calf Roping. There, she competed in Breakaway Roping, which is a girl’s event where they lasso a calf around the neck, stop their horse and the rope breaks away from saddle horn which is tied on with nylon string. Brill then continued on to Shawnee, OK for the International Finals Youth Rodeo (IYFR), where she once again competed in Breakaway Roping. This was the largest rodeo she had ever competed in and she handled the pressure well. Her composure was of a professional. The final stop was a rodeo in Gillette, WY, which she had competed all year to qualify. At the Alabama High School Rodeo Association (AHSRA) for the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR), which is the largest youth rodeo, she competed against over 1,600 contestants from 42 states, 5 Canadian Provinces and Australia, there she competed in Breakaway Roping and Girls Cutting. Brill’s family grew up in the rodeo and she is following in their footsteps. Her Mother, Nikki Nitteberg, owns the family western store in Summerdale which was established in 1993. Nikayla has a bright future ahead of her, and will carry on the rodeo tradition locally and however far her journey will allow her. We are proud to see all the hard work, dedication and efforts this young lady has put forth in our community. She has been a part of the fair rodeo since she could sit up on her first horse. We support our youth, the future of tomorrow! BALDWINCOFAIR.COM

PIONEER FAMILY: THE FAMILY HISTORY OF

T

Elmer McDaniel

hey say all roads lead home. This is especially true when home is known as Baldwin County. Elmer Garrett McDaniel’s roots run deeply within Baldwin’s soil and he feels blessed to call this special place home. He can thank his maternal grandparents, Martin Bye and Olga Olsen, who emigrated from Norway through Ellis Island at the turn of the century as they searched for a more prosperous life. They married in Racine, Wisconsin and decided to move south where the winters were not as grueling. They found themselves settling in Robertsdale where they would raise their family as well as Andy McDaniel and Mary Elizabeth Harrell, Elmer’s paternal grandparents of Scottish and Irish descent. After marrying in Jemison, AL, Andy and Lizzy left their rural farm life in Chilton County searching for greener pastures in 1919. The central Baldwin town of Robertsdale would become home for the McDaniel’s as well as several other Chilton County residents who uprooted their families and headed southward. Some of the folks who moved from this area were the Campbell, Hankins and Ellison families. Farming provided a way of life with which they were all familiar. Elmer’s parents were Edward McDaniel and Louise Bye. The couple married in 1936 and sharecropped land owned by Elmer’s namesake, local dentist, Dr. Amos Garrett. From sun up to sun down they cleared the land with a mule and plow. Times were hard but they prevailed through very hard work and determination. The couple eventually purchased 120 acres of farm land east of Robertsdale, known as Brewton Settlement, and introduced their children to the hard work associated with country farm living. Cucumbers were grown early on but eventually soybeans and corn became their main row crops. They also raised hogs, chickens and beef cattle. Elmer remembers when his parents decided to expand the family farm in 1957. They ventured into the dairy business and theirs would become one of many dairies within Baldwin County. This endeavor provided a guaranteed income source which helped to supplement their row crops. It was a family affair from which no one was exempt. When the dairy was sold in 1973 Edward and Louise took a much deserved two week vacation out west. Currently the dairy barn serves as a gathering place for family and friends to reminisce about the “good old days” of farm life in Baldwin County. After graduating from Robertsdale High School in 1958, Elmer attended Auburn University which was then known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute or A.P.I. He graduated with an Industrial Management The Andy McDaniel Family from Jemison, AL

degree in 1962. Elmer married Mary Harding McDaniel of Foley, AL and they began their life together in Birmingham, AL where Elmer worked with Alabama Power Company. Eventually their paths would lead them back home to Baldwin County where they built their home in Robertsdale. It was here where their three sons, Mark, Michael and Miles grew up enjoying country life. Baldwin County Electric Membership Corporation would serve as Elmer’s livelihood for the next 33 years until his retirement as General Manager in 1998. Mary retired from the Baldwin County Board of Education in 2001 after serving 26 years as a Registered Nurse within Baldwin’s school system. Throughout the years, the McDaniel family has grown and branched out. As a result, many recognizable surnames are sprinkled throughout Baldwin County and have become associated with the family name. Some of which are the Gulledge family of Summerdale, the Hanson, Fell, James and White families of Foley, the Clemmons family from Pine Grove and Bay Minette as well as the Brewton and Davenport families of Robertsdale. Baldwin County has provided a family legacy with strong roots for Elmer, his relatives and ancestors before him. It is his hope that future generations will choose to travel roads which lead them back to Baldwin County. After all, there is no place like home.

BALDWIN COUNTY FAIR Volunteer of the Year T

GEORGE CAMPBELL

he Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association salutes George Campbell for his lifelong contributions of time and work promoting the Baldwin County Fair. George followed in the footsteps of his father, William (Bill) Campbell who volunteered at the Fair, serving on the board and as president. George is the first born son of William and Lucille Monroe Campbell, a Robertsdale farming family with strong participation in civic activities. He was raised south of the center of Robertsdale, a heartbeat from the local daily happenings. Their dairy farm spread eastward from their home place, including the property where the Fairground is now located. George is noted among the livestock industry for his ability with successfully raising cattle. He was dedicated to helping many young cattlemen with their cattle herds, and a mainstay for his help when they needed his advice. His tenure on the Robertsdale Livestock Auction Board for many years saw Baldwin County livestock at its peak of 137 dairies to none BALDWINCOFAIR.COM

today. The weekly auction averaged 1,000 head of cattle, filling the small town every Monday with cattle buyers for large feed lot companies, local cattlemen buying and selling their stock, and many large cattle trucks seeking parking space. Many cowgirls and cowboys owe their horse riding skills to George and his old horse “Charlie”, who lived over 30 years old. George’s lifelong ambition has always been to promote the Fair for future generations. He could always be counted on for volunteering on Sunday mornings after the close of the Fair to get exhibits and livestock returned home. In addition to his longtime service on the Board of Directors and as President with the Baldwin County Cattle & Fair Association, his community service participation includes the Robertsdale Livestock Auction, a charter member of the Baldwin County Sheriff’ Posse, and membership in the Robertsdale United Methodist Church 66th Baldwin County Fair 2016 • 37
