I hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and been able to spend some quality time with your family. 2016 is looking good for Lake Forest. We’ve got some great upgrades to our amenities in the works. The Montclair Pool renovation is underway and should be completed well before the pools open up in May. This will include new plaster, tile, and coping. The leaking skimmers will be replaced. The deck will be expanded and then coated in spray deck. The chain link fence
Steve Sasser this month. Some long overdue upgrades are being done to the men’s and women’s bathrooms behind the bar. We are still on hold for repaving the cart path on #17. We’re waiting for the city of
Daphne to replace a storm water drainage pipe that runs under #17. We don’t have a date, but our Public Works director, Richard Johnson, has the material on hand and the project at the top of his list. However, we do have a date for the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of our new Daphne Central Park on January 9th, at 10:00AM. The city has done an incredible job of cleaning up this property, repaving the path around the park, designing and installing a 9 hole combination disc/foot golf See New Year, Page 4

GENERAL MANAGERS
Report
Rob Wright, CCM, CAM Lake Forest is blessed with some special members who help make things special with no more reward than heartfelt thanks. I would like to take this time to give a big shout out to the members who worked so hard to put up our Christmas decorations. Decorations are put up at all of the entrances, the 19th Hole and the Yacht Club. Over eighty work hours were donated by the following
group of special people, whose efforts help give Lake Forest that Christmas feel. First I would like to thank the Leader of the pack, Mrs. Connie Mahoney and her head elf, her husband, Dave Mahoney. I would also like to thank all of the other helpers, Ron and Ev Simons, Tony and Connie Bono, Norm and Gail Richards, Jackie Kearney, and Nancy Henderson. When you see these people, please thank them for their efforts. The new coupon books are out and the current Centennial Bank’s lock box address is on it. Annual memberships in all of the amenities are due. There is a dues increase this year, please see President Steve Sasser’s article for where this money is going. We also increased the non-
voting membership and the social memberships. We lowered some of the amenity fees for members, ie golf and tennis. We are also starting renovation of the north bathrooms at the Yacht Club in January as well as starting the renovation of the Montclair pool. If you have any questions regarding your favorite amenities dues please contact Ruth in administration or communicate with the amenity’s department head. There are new signs on the golf course. They say the same thing that the signs have said since 2011, the old signs were beautiful wood signs that wore out. The new signs look wooden but are really plastic. The verbiage came from the Daphne police 5 years ago so that they can stop trespassers on
the course and 4 wheelers and other disruptive actions. The walking rules are still the same. All day Monday, early and late on the other days, the key is the hole flag. When the flags are in, please stay off the course and when the flags are not in please feel free to walk, jog and even ride your bike. This was one of our busiest Decembers ever. The number of parties was the largest in over four years. The Sunday Brunch has gone over very well; something about Eggs Benedict seems to draw people. The Breakfast with Santa was the largest ever. This is one of the biggest events that we do and it feels a little crazy but when Santa arrived everything became fantastic. A special thanks to Missy Hoover and Nadine Carey for their efforts. The annual meeting will be March 21st, 2016, at St. Paul’s Church at 7:00pm; we hope to see you there.
There are Board positions open with three incumbents rerunning. Interested candidates need to get their information to the office by the 18th of January. BOGO burgers at the Yacht Club on Wednesday
s, Brunch on Sundays, Tennis leagues forming and golf specials for members. There is something to do for everyone. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call.
Breakfast with Santa 2015 was a success. General Manager, Rob Wright, Ruth Partain & Missy Hoover as Mrs. Claus.

New Year, from Page 1 course, and installing a parking lot. I’ve had my family out there several times and we had a blast, despite being newbies to disc golf. I hope you can come out and join us in celebrating this great partnership with the city of Daphne with a new city park on our property. I’ve had a lot of response from my last month’s article and from our dues increase. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised in the number of responses I received that were in favor and very appreciative of the direction this board is heading. Of course, there were a few responses that were completely opposed to a dime of a dues increase, and in fact, a couple that would just assume that our POA dissolve completely. Well, that’s not going to happen, but there was a resounding response that our membership was not happy with our level of enforcing our covenants, especially architectural violations. We do have a process, and we do respond to every complaint, but it is as obvious to the BOD as it is to the membership that our process is not as effective as we’d like it to be. That comes down to our covenants. Our covenants do not give the POA very much authority to enforce
them. We are literally doing everything we can legally do to enforce the covenants we have. The good news is, for the first time since the LFPOA was incorporated in 1971, we have divorced our ties with our developer, who has always had the majority in any vote, and our membership can now viably vote to amend our covenants. Via a lawsuit that we settled just last month, one of Friday Construction’s last actions with LFPOA was to amend the covenants so that with a 66 and 2/3 vote of those members voting, we can amend and update our covenants that were adopted and have remained unchanged since 1971. So, if better covenant enforcement is what you want, you can help to make it happen. This will be a top priority for our BOD this year. Our other priorities will include continuing to improve and upgrade our amenities. We haven’t voted, so it’s not official, but we are talking about renovating the Ridgewood Pool and replacing pool furniture throughout all the pools in 2016. We are also looking into a complete renovation of the 19th hole. This most likely will not happen in 2016 as we need to make assessments to the building and make plans. We are envisioning a family friendly internet
cafe with a full service bar and restaurant open for lunch and dinner. A complete redesign of the floorplan and an exterior remodel complementary to this century is on order. I want to encourage each of you to come to our meetings and get involved with the future or our neighborhood. We are desperately trying to improve our community, amenities, and our way of life. We need your input. We had our largest turn out this year of members at a meeting last month with a whopping 14 members present. With over 3,100 members, that’s a little discouraging and very telling of why I had so many emails of members wanting to know where their money went. As a BOD, we are very passionate and dedicated to our association. We are also very transparent, but we can’t read minds and we can’t go door to door updating the membership. If you truly care about what is going on in your neighborhood, please get involved. We post our meeting agendas and minutes on our website www.lakeforestpoa.org under the members only tab. If you need help with your login call the office at 626-0788. I look forward to seeing you and hearing from you. Let’s make 2016 an awesome year!

Quarterly Landscape Awards Golfer’s, Grandparent’s and Gardner’s Submitted By Mary Williams What a pleasant visit I had with Jack and Patricia Popp at their home on 173 Rolling Hill Drive. With such a beautiful home and yard, it does not take long to realize the couple enjoys life to the fullest, sharing their love for family, golf and gardening. Every true golfer knows that Monday is yard work, so the rest of the week can be set aside
to try for that “Hole in One”. While Jack is busy trimming shrubs and cutting the grass, Patricia is tending to her flower beds. With a little help from her grandchildren, the summer zinnia’s were quickly removed to make room for her winter flowers. She has found that viola’s and cabbages are a must but this year with her son’s suggestion, she is trying a new petunia “Supertunia” which can take temperature’s down to 30 degrees.
The Popp’s have many species that have a way of lighting up their front and back garden. One being the Japanese Maple, the Bloodgood, with its burgundy foliage in the Spring and brilliant Scarlet leaves in the Fall. Another is the Indian Hawthorn tree, a Majestic Beauty, producing large clusters of fragrant pick flowers. Jack and Patricia’s favorite pass time is enjoying their screened in porch with family and friend’s or just watching the flowers grow.

A Gardener and His Favorite Plants Submitted By Mary Williams After living most of their life in sunny California and tired of the earthquakes, Jim and Mary Loury decided to relocate. Keeping in mind that Mary wanted to be closer to her mother in Florida and Jim wanted to be able to grow fruit trees and roses that he had so long enjoyed on the West Coast, they found themselves settling in at 125 DeWitt Circle. Jim loves landscaping, so it was not long before he began putting down roots
in more ways than one. He had a number of trees removed to allow ample sunlight for his plants. After experimenting with a wide variety of fruit trees and roses he soon learned what was the hardiest for this area. In the front yard you will find a beautiful large rose bed filled with some of his favorites, Chrysler Imperial, Just Joey, Olympiad and of course Mr. Lincoln, which was introduced to the rose family in 1964. Along the sides and back of their home, are three large Peach
trees, Ruby Red Grapefruit, several Kumquat bushes and a Owari Satsuma tree. Unfortunately, the 2013 ice storm did great damage to his fruit trees, but with lots of TLC, they are thriving and producing once again. Jim (Doc) ,a retired pharmacist, would put most gardeners to shame, namely me, with his detailed notebook of records. His perfect prescription’s have yielded him a beautiful yard with an abundance of fruit and flowers that they are always so willing to share.

"A HERO WITHIN OUR MIDST" Mr. Brenden Tarvar – Lake Forest Rescue
Coming December 30...A special Foley Onlooker Section
Written By: Chief White & VJ Phelps Every now and then someone we know, maybe your friend, neighbor or a relative does something extemporary. We have someone right in our community that has done so. At 0542 AM on October 4, 2015, the Daphne Fire Department was dispatched to Montclair Loop for the report of a structure fire, with one trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Upon arrival of fire department personnel, a civilian, Mr. Brenden Tarvar, a neighbor of the home where the fire occurred, was found in the front yard, overcome by smoke with one of the home’s occupants. When he learned that his neighbor’s home was on fire, Mr. Tarvar, along with a male occupant of the home, selflessly entered the burning home, in an attempt to rescue the woman trapped upstairs. Mr. Tarvar assisted with breaking down the door of

Firefighters arrived on scene within 5 minutes from Fire Station 3 and were able to enter the burning home and complete the rescue. Although the outcome for the victim was tragic in the following days, without the quick actions of Mr. Tarvar, a family would not have been able to spend some final moments with their loved one. At a recent City Council meeting Chief White our City of Daphne Police Chief awarded Mr. Tarvar
a citation, with a Medal for his bravery and made an Honorary Daphne Fire Fighter for his actions. So if you see Mr. Tarvar out and about you might want to offer to shake his hand and offer your thanks.

WINTER TIME FISHING
By Billy Harrell Harbor Master Hopefully everyone had a safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year’s holiday. Between the food and the football I am just about ready to start fishing again. But first I have to change the line on 10 reels, clean and lubricate them, wipe off salt and build-up on the rods, lubricate the eyes on the rods, change the oil in the motor, change the oil in the lower unit, clean bilge in hull of boat, wash and wax boat, lubricate the trailer, check and replace lights on the trailer, check and replace tackle, and renew license and decals if necessary. Heck, I think I’ll just go deer hunting since I have a month left to hunt and take advantage of the cold weather. For y you devoted and brave souls my fishing
Billy Harrell report for January is the water temperatures have dropped into low- 60s’. There has been some fair fishing and the weather was good till the strong winter fronts showed up. The bay and rivers are muddy due to the wind and rain, but the salinity of the water is about .05 ppt in the Delta. This means flounder are back down to the gulf, redfish are all alone in the Delta and the trout have moved to the deeper channels of the creeks and rivers.
What this really means is the cooler weather makes for cooler water temperatures and the fish bite becomes slower and making live bait harder to find. Also, be aware of the tide changes this time of year because the water levels can drop quickly and leave you stranded on a sand bar or a mud flat which is not very pleasant this time of year. A couple of boat shows are coming up and they are a great way to pass the winter months. The Mobile Boat Show is Feb. 19-21, 2016, at the Mobile Convention Center. The Biloxi Boat and RV Show is March 4-6, 2016, at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS. Till next month, stay warm and keep a tight Line. Billy Harrell
NEW SIGNS AT ENTRANCES TO THE GOLF COURSE Some people have noticed new signs at the entrances to the golf course. The signs are replacements to signs that had previously been there for years. While the signs are physically new the verbiage is the exact same that it was on the previous sign. Sadly, the woodworker who made the old, wooden signs retired and we were forced to replace
the old signs with a more uniform, commercial product. The policy regarding member access to golf course has not changed. When the flags are in their holes on the greens please stay off the golf course but on Mondays, early mornings and evenings when the flags have been pulled, home owners still have the right to walk, jog or bike on the
paths. The wording on the signs were directions from Daphne PD so that they can go after non-dues paying owners, four-wheelers, destructive juveniles and other people who have no business on the property. We encourage members to use the golf course when the flags are out and also the new Lake Forest Central Park.
Happy
New Year

Lake Forest
Women’s Club
Submitted By: Lura Kauffman
The November 2015 meeting of the Lake Forest Women’s Club was held on November 19th at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 24 members and three guests present. Tables were beautifully decorated for the Thanksgiving holiday by our hostesses Dino Salmi, Wanda Patterson, Kathy Springman, Brenda Perry and Fay Redman. Judy Baust gave the Inspiration and Kathy Springman introduced
our guest speaker, Ron Scott, who has been a Councilman since 2004. Mr. Scott announced the Daphne Christmas Tree Lighting and the Christmas Parade and invited everyone to come to these fun celebrations of the season. They are also planning a rain barrel workshop. He brought along the Jubilee Breeze publication done by the City of Daphne, which has much information on the area and its upcoming events. He reminded us that the upcoming elections in
August 2016 will involve redistricting which will correct some districts that have become lopsided due to growth of new subdivisions. Public hearings will be held about the redistricting in January and February. Mr. Scott stated that Lake Forest makes up 40% of the population of the city of Daphne and the city has made a commitment to resurface our roads. A good portion of the work has already been completed and the medians have been replanted with a hybrid
zoysia grass which is drought resistant. Although much repaving has been done, storm water remains an issue. The old Lake Nine golf course has been developed into a very nice walking path and they have put in a disc golf area. There are also plans to expand the walking path and add additional parking areas. Other plans are to extend the current sidewalks one half mile in each direction to enable people to walk to the swimming pools. Recycling is not
very profitable but is very important for the environment. If the city did not recycle, it would increase the garbage weight for which the city is charged a fee. Mr. Scott encouraged everyone to continue to recycle. The city has also been awarded a grant to improve Gator Alley.
The meeting was adjourned as everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon of roast pork with apples, sweet potato casserole, green beans, spinach salad, pecan squares and rolls.
Our January meeting will be on January 21, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. All members The 50/50 was won by are invited. New Jean Wildenhaus and members and guests are Judy Baust and the door always welcome! Please prizes were awarded join us! to Grace Kelly, Nancy Henderson, Karola Buyse and Dino Salmi.
