We’re just one month in and it seems it has been a busy year already. The Montclair Pool renovation is in full swing. We’ve had several meetings about the renovations at the 19th Hole with HMR and our long range planning committee. The by laws and covenants committee have been working on by laws amendments. We had a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Daphne Central Park. The Board of Directors had a Saturday morning work session retreat at the Yacht Club. As I’m writing this article, the City of Daphne’s public works department is making preparations to replace the drain pipe under #17, so we can move on with repaving the cart path. Steve Sasser new, and it won’t leak! The deck expansion is going to allow for a lot more room around the pool to spread out. The new fence will do away with the barbed wire, prison looking fence. The bathrooms will get some long overdue love. So please, ride by and check it out. We are having the buildings assessed and the property surveyed at the 19th Hole and the

Yacht Club. All of the plans we are to make will depend greatly on these assessments. As these will be some the biggest capital improvements Lake Forest has ever made, you should weigh in your thoughts. We’re doing our best to meet the needs and expectations of our membership, but if we don’t hear from you, we don’t know what you want.

Communication was a topic we spent a great deal of time on at our work session. We’re looking into rebuilding our website, www.lakeforestpoa.org. We’re also looking into creating a Facebook page to help keep our membership informed. We get the fact that fewer people are looking at printed media. So, we’re going to exhaust every avenue we can to keep accurate information going out. It will always depend on the individual members, though, to be as informed and as involved as they want to be. Rob Wright, CCM, CAM It doesn’t matter where you are from, it’s been COLD! January was an interesting month. Our snowbird residents are back and really commented on all of the good things happening at Lake Forest, such as Burger night, golf specials and the golf deals. On January 9th, your Lake Forest Board, Daphne Mayor Dane Haygood and Daphne City Councilors, Ron Scott, John Lake and Randy

Fry along with Daphne Public Works Director and Recreational Director cut the ribbon on the new Lake 9 walking path and disc golf course, called Central Park. The walking path is one of the biggest requests by Lake Forest residents to have within the community and now we do. I would also like to commend the Board members of Lake Forest. They are all resident homeowners in Lake Forest yet made the difficult decision to increase the maintenance fees. Almost all of the new fees are being designated for infrastructure and amenity repair and upgrade. I congratulate them on making a difficult decision although all homeowners will be the ultimate winners.

If you have the opportunity, drive by Montclair pool. It will be finished shortly and the vision of the renovated pool will service the community for years to come. The golf course is handling the cold temperatures fairly well. Big changes were made in the pricing at the Pro Shop with the intent of making it less expensive for homeowners to play golf on the best course in the area. Individual rounds are much less expensive as is the annual greens fee rate. The new pricing means that even if you are only a weekend warrior, your course is the place to play. The paper bag discoloration is normal for the cold weather that

we have been having and with a little nitrogen, water and about a week of sunny, mild weather will green back up. The good news is that the greens are healthy and putting well and the tee boxes and fairways are in good shape. The pro shop has some great deals on shirts and balls and some really great pricing for home owners. We also offer a play card and a great deal for snowbirds. The Yacht Club had the biggest food and beverage months since the old clubhouse was in its prime. Now we are getting ready for some big menu changes to keep it fresh. Look for all the specials in the eblast and if you are not getting the eblast contact Missy at 626-0788 and she’ll get you set up. The annual meeting will be March 21st at St. Paul’s; we look forward to seeing you there.

The Inspiration was read by Judy Baust. Janet Pruitt, First Vice President introduced speaker Jere Trigg for his presentation on African

According to Mr. Trigg African Violets were discovered in 1892 in Tanzania in Eastern Africa where they were found blooming on the ledges of mountains. The original plants had only blue flowers but in 1920 seeds were imported to the United States and soon ten hybrids were produced. Now there

Violets which were beautifully illustrated by the plants that he brought to share as door prizes and by the many plants which were available for purchase. Mr. Trigg is a chemical engineer who began

are many varieties of leaves and bloom colors. He provided handouts which included many growing tips for these colorful plants. Light is critical for a healthy blooming plant.

Light provides energy for the plant but the plants must be protected from direct sun and they also grow well under fluorescent light. Watering should be done with room temperature or tepid water and may be done from the top or the bottom but it is important to remember not to get water on the crown of the plant as this will lead to crown rot. Also, do not let the pot sit in water because the excess water will cause root rot. Feeding should be done with a balanced fertilizer such as Optimera. The environment should be between 60-80 degrees with the ideal temperature between 70-75 degrees with 50% humidity. Soil should be a sphagnum based “soilless” mix, consisting of at least 30-50% vermiculite and/or perlite. Plants should be groomed by removing old flowers and their bloom stalks. When grooming, do not cut the old bloom stalks or yellow leaves but gently hold the bloom stalk or leaf and move it back and forth until it snaps free. Never cut the stem of the plant because cutting encourages rot. Suckers

can also be gently removed with a pencil point and if a sucker is removed without breaking the leaves it can be planted in vermiculite until it grows its own roots. Plants should be repotted every 6-12 months to prevent packed soil. Plants may also be repotted if they become too large for their pots. After refreshments provided by our hostesses the Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports were approved and it was announced that our speaker in February will be Gene Sellier whose topic will be Culinary Herbs. Dana Sawyer announced that President Carmen Luck had resigned her position and that per out by-laws First Vice President Janet Pruitt would be the new President. We were sorry to hear that Carmen Luck would be unable to continue but very grateful to have Janet Pruitt in this important position. Mary Williams spoke on the Landscape Awards for this quarter and Dana Sawyer gave a report on the Christmas Decorating Contest. Horticulture Awards:

Our December 17, 2015 meeting was held at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 23 members present and one guest. Tables were decorated for the Christmas holiday by our hostesses and as we gathered a large flock of white pelicans flew by overhead – a truly stunning sight as they circled the area before flying away. The meeting was called to order and Tomasina Werner read our Inspiration. Connie Mahoney introduced speaker Annie Root, Director of the Daphne Art Center. The art center is a non-profit organization and is located behind City Hall in the old police station and fire hall. In 2009 the

city of Daphne was no longer able to fund the art center and as a result the center underwent a major reorganization. As a result the staff has been streamlined but there remain many classes and activities for the public. Membership is $30.00 and many of the classes are free and fees for a six week class are only $60.00. There are even classes on a payas-you-go basis and the center offers classes for children as well as adults. The art center also has a web site and holds a free exhibition once a month. In addition to the art activities the center also sponsors a Farmer’s Market at the Daphne Un i t e d Me t ho d is t Church from 2-6 p.m. on Fridays from March to September. The Farmer’s Market is state certified

and features produce, meat, fish and bread which are all from the local area. Tomasina Werner announced the grand opening of the Daphne Central Park which features a nine hold disc golf course and invited everyone to attend. Connie Mahoney led the singing of Christmas Carols and members enjoyed a delicious lunch. The 50/50 was won by Martha Thomas and Connie Mahoney. Our February meeting will be on February 18, 2016 at the Lake Forest Yacht Club at 11 a.m. All members are invited and new member & guests are always welcome! This tells me one thing: The folks who care enough about what is going on in their neighborhood to sacrifice their time to make a difference are already doing so. Speaking of which, I want to say a very gracious “Thank you” to Mary Ann Hampton. When Mary Ann first joined the board of directors in 2009, Lake Forest was literally on the verge of bankruptcy.

At that time, it was unclear as to whether the BOD was running the management, or the management running the BOD. It was very clear to all of us that neither was taking care of Lake Forest as they should. Mary Ann was elected president in 2011, and took the reins of a wild horse. She has spent a great deal of her life since then taming this beast. We all owe her a debt of gratitude for her legal expertise, working with the city of Daphne, the work she has poured in, to get us where we can amend our covenants, and the cohesive BOD we have

today. She’s had some great help along the way, but without her resolve, we would not be where we are. Thank you Mary Ann. Again, I urge you to get involved with your neighborhood. Our stated meetings are at the same place, and same time every month -7PM at the 19th Hole on the third Thursday. We are talking about spending hundreds of thousands of our dues to make some of the biggest capital improvements we’ve ever done. Help us make 2016 a great year!

By Billy Harrell Harbor Master Now that football and hunting season are over I have started my “to do list” from last month. That consisted of changing the line on 10 reels, clean and lubricate them, wipe off salt and build-up on the rods, lubricate the eyes on the rods, change the oil in the motor, change the oil in the lower unit, clean bilge in hull of boat, wash and wax boat, lubricate the trailer, check and replace lights on the trailer, check and replace tackle, and renew license and decals if necessary. For you devoted and brave souls my fishing report for February is the water temperatures have dropped into low50’s. There have been no reports of fish being caught in the Bay at this time. The weather has been wonderful if you like a lot of rain and winds out of the North. The bay and rivers are muddy due to the wind and rain, and the salinity of the water is about .01 ppt in the Delta. This means there is very little fish left in the bay except some resident

Billy Harrell redfish and sheephead. But, if you want to go to the back- end of the rivers such as the Fowl River, Dog River, Fish River, Magnolia River, and Bon Secour River, they are usually fairly clear and saltier and not affected by the rain waters. The best way to fish these waters is to fish artificial with a 3/8 oz. jig head on a white / chartreuse Gulp or Vudu shrimp. This time of year fish slow, slow, and slow for redfish and trout. What this really means is the cooler weather makes for cooler water temperatures and the fish bite becomes slower and making live bait harder to find. Good luck and if this doesn’t work, go home and come back another day. A couple of boat shows are coming up

and they are a great way to pass the winter months. The Mobile Boat Show is Feb. 1921, 2016 at the Mobile Convention Center. The Biloxi Boat and RV Show is March 4-6, 2016 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS. One event that happens every year at the Marina is the Annual Fishing Seminar. I will be hosting the seminar on March 19, 2016, 9a.m. at the Yacht Club. More details will follow next month, so mark your calendar. The Annual Coast Guard Auxiliary free vessel safety inspection will be held at the Marina from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on April 23, 2016. This event is free and will help you get your boat compliant to meet state and federal regulations. The Annual Lake Forest Youth Fishing Tournament will be held at the Marina Fishing Pier from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on May 21, 2016. This fishing tournament is open to all children between the ages of 3 to 13. Free lunch and soft drinks will be served after the awards ceremony.

Thomas Hospital and Wells Fargo Host 38th Annual Spring Fever Chase Submitted by: Allison Mezick Infirmary Health Marketing and Community Relations Runners and walkers alike should get ready for the 38th Annual Spring Fever Chase scheduled for Saturday, March 19, in Fairhope. This 10K run and 2-mile fun run/walk, sponsored by Thomas Hospital, an affiliate of Infirmary Health, and Wells Fargo, t ake s both runners and walkers on a beautiful and challenging c o u r s e through the neighborhoods of Fairhope overlooking Mobile Bay. A unique, yet important component of the Spring Fever Chase i n v o l v e s a friendly competition for prize money and grants allocated for schools in Baldwin County. Grants are available for equipment purchase and program expenses for physical education departments and are chosen based upon availability of funds and school participation. Applications must be completed and returned to any of the three Infirmary Fitness Centers: ProHealth Fitness Center, Mobile; North Baldwin Fitness Center, Bay Minette; and Thomas Fitness

Center, Fairhope, by March 12. Schools with at least 25 race applicants receive $2 for each participant that registers; schools with fewer than 25 registrations are not eligible for cash awards. An additional cash award is presented to the school with the highest percentage of race participants. Students

and parents must preregister through their school no later than March 12 to be eligible for the school incentive program. Day-of-race registration will begin at 7:00 a.m. at registration tables located at the intersection of Bayview Street and Fairhope Avenue near the starting line. Depending on supply, participants who register after the early registration deadline may not receive a T-shirt. Day of race registration ends at 7:45 a.m.

Awards will be presented to race winners during the post-race party on the bluff on South Mobile Street near the finish line, overlooking Mobile Bay. Awards will be presented to the top three overall men and women finishers, the top three wheelchair participants, the top three race walkers and the first master's man and woman in the 10K race. The top three finishers in each of 15 age categories for men and women in the 10K will also receive an awa rd . The top three finishers in the 2-mile fun run will also be awarded. A $250 cash award will be presented for a course record in the male division, f e m a l e division and wheelchair division of the 10K race. Tennis News AT THE LFRC Submitted by: Michael Albrecht, USPTA Head Tennis Professional We are in the middle of the “cold weather” season at the Lake Forest Racquet club but that doesn’t seem to keep people away.

Layer up, put your hat and gloves on and go play some tennis. USTA ladies spring season will be starting March 1st so please contact us if you are interested in playing on a team. Home matches will be in the mornings starting at 9:00 AM and will depend on what team you are on

You did a great job as captain, Johannes. You really kept those guys in check. Good luck to all the guys on the next season. Some of our junior players traveled to Orange Beach for a junior tennis tournament January 8 to 10. It was a great weekend. All our players fought hard in the cold conditions. Congratulations to Martha Grace for making it to the semifinals. Some of the Lake Forest

kids have only been playing for a year and are competing with kids who have been playing for 5 years. It takes lots of guts to go out there and play your first tournament. When these kids play a tournament there is no coaching allowed. They are out on the court themselves playing these matches with only spectators cheering them on. Some of the matches can go on for 2 to 3 hours. Have you ever wanted to learn how to play tennis? Here is your chance. A ladies morning beginner tennis program is starting Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 at the LFRC in Daphne, AL. The class will be Wednesday and Friday mornings
