Candy Cane Chistmas Most families go shopping for their children during the Christmas season, but for some, Christmas presents are not in the budget. Because of this need, Ransom Ministries hosts its annual Candy Cane Christmas, a toy store that only accepts donations. This year’s event is on Dec. 10 at the Hangar of West Mobile Baptist Church from 9 a.m. until noon. “This is one of our favorite community events of the year — it’s awesome to see the kids have a great time, and parents are so grateful to be able provide for their children,” says Matt Armbruster, director of Ransom Ministries. “Just like our main ministry, Ransom Cafe, we do ask for some kind of donation from them because everything means more when we invest in it. Most parents are grateful for the opportunity to donate because it gives them dignity. Some stranger isn’t providing for their kids — they are. We just ask them to donate whatever they can afford.” Part of the building is set up like a toy store, and parents

shop for gifts while their kids take pictures with Santa, play holiday games and make crafts with volunteers. Gifts will be wrapped at no charge, and a continental breakfast will be served. Volunteers, new toys and monetary donations are needed for Candy Cane Christmas. Check RansomMinistries.com for more information about how you can get involved.

20 Holiday Gift Guide November 2016

Keep Little Hands Busy, Out of the Kitchen by Crystal Cole Thanksgiving is a fun time of year. Families getting together, fall foliage, good food and even better football. All the festivities might be a bit taxing or down right boring to your toddler, though. It’s always good to have backup activities for the really young kids to make them feel included and calm down any tantrums. The hand outline turkey is an old standard, but might not captivate your little ones’ interest long enough. So, here are two more Thanksgiving crafts to fill out your program.

LEAF OR PINECONE TURKEYS

Living in the South has its advantages, one of them being we are still able to run around outside deep into the fall and winter months (I’m still rocking tank tops and shorts most days). That being said, getting the kiddos outside and running around before mealtime is a great way to insure their nap is a success. If you also happen to get a nap out of the deal and some extra hands for yard work, who’s to judge? Just go out and help your kids find the prettiest, most colorful leaves they can find and a pinecone that hasn’t been trampled by deer yet. Get some brown and white construction paper. Cut two circles, one about half the diameter of the first, out of the brown paper. Arrange the leaves in a semicircle above the circles, draw a turkey face and some legs and glue everything down to the white paper. Badda bing, badda boom, you got yourself a turkey. The pinecone is a similar concept, glue the leaves fanned out behind the big end of the cone and cut out some eyes from the construction paper. Or use googly eyes if you’re fancy.

PAINT TREES

So, this one isn’t for the faint of heart. Getting paint and toddlers together around a meticulously cooked meal and the good china is one tantrum and a few brushstrokes away from an America’s Funniest Videos finalist. So, I recommend breaking open some wine. Yeah, you heard me. Don’t act like you weren’t going to already. We are going to cut a tree trunk out of the brown construction paper and glue it to the white paper. Then, very carefully, set out red, yellow, orange and brown paints in a paper plate or other handy dandy container. Next, let your kids use the corks from your wine bottle(s) as stamps to dip in the paint and make leaves. This should minimize messes common with brushes. If, in fact, your child does get orange paint all over the turkey you worked over all night, then just pour another glass and break out the frozen chicken strips.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Throughout the holiday season, The Wharf in Orange Beach hosts several Christmas events and activities for the whole family. Whether you’re getting a photo with Santa, catching the holiday light show or taking part in another seasonal activity, there is so much to do to get into the holiday spirit. A returning favorite to The Wharf this year is the ice skating rink. “The Ice Skating Rink is usually a favorite among locals and visitors,” said Sheena Mizell, Marketing Manager for The Wharf. “It is a unique opportunity to be able to ice skate in coastal Alabama. The ice rink has become an annual attraction at The Wharf that features real ice and keeps skating fans coming back year after year.” Along with the ice skating rink, there will be a Santa’s Village with live animals and the opportunity to have your photo taken with St. Nick himself. There are a few new additions to this year’s events. “This year will offer a few new shopping perks,” Mizell said. “The Wharf will host a Gift Wrapping Headquarters that will benefit Orange Beach Elementary School. Come out and shop and have your gifts wrapped all in one stop.” This year The Wharf will also host 12 Days of Christmas. Each day between Dec. 13 and 24, organizers will announce a new very special deal at a Wharf retailer or restaurant. “The Wharf is a perfect location to spend the holidays with your family as there are activities for all ages and interests,” Mizell said. “In addition to the holiday

Holiday Gift Guide 23

Holiday Gift Wrap TRENDS By Lauren Newman

Ther ere’s re’ nothing no not othing th g like likke the li the si sight of a Christmas tree, merry and bright, with stacks on stacks of wrapped presents spilling out from underneath. Average spending for Christmas presents in 2015 was $882 per American household according to American Research Group, Inc. That is up from the previous year’s figure of $861/household but down from 10 years ago, where the average household spent $907 on Christmas gifts in 2006. Still, that could equal a hefty number of presents underneath your tree. Do you have a method to your gift-wrapping madness? What are some of the most popular wrapping themes and up-coming trends? Let’s take a look. In a promotional online video, Carly Unger, a product manager for Hallmark, discussed three distinct collections coming out for the 2016 Christmas season. “Gift wrap is really about a celebration that you can really make your own, especially at Christmas when you think about the gifts underneath the tree,” Unger said. “People choose their gift wrap based on their own personal style as well as they’re giving that gift to.” The first trend Unger highlighted was a more preppy style of wrap, focusing on red and green plaid patterns and reversible wrapping paper where each side has two different patterns to choose from. The second was more for the artsy type, showcasing big hand-painted poinsettia prints while also nodding to the traditional Santa Claus that the company has marketed in their products for decades. The last collection was their signature collection which had a more upscale and sophisticated look: gold wrap, bags with pops of color on the inside and thicker two-sided tissue paper. Accessories can add personal touches to gifts wrapped in the same pattern of paper. The kind of accessories to use are almost unlimited, ranging from bows, ribbon, jingle bells, gift tags or sprigs of pine or holly. Another idea to set your gifts apart while adding a personal touch is to use plain Kraft paper and drawing or painting a design or holiday message on it, which could also serve as a way to get kids involved in giftwrapping festivities. Happy wrapping! 24 Holiday Gift Guide November 2016

Add water, vanilla and salt and stir until smooth. Add sugar, cocoa powder and flour and stir until all the lumps are out. Cook in the microwave for 30 seconds. Preheat gridle to 350 degrees (medium heat) 2. In a large bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients. 3. In a separate bowl, mix eggs, milk, molasses and butter. 4. Slowly add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until combined, do not over mix. 5. Scoop about 1/4 of mixture onto skillet and flip when top begins to bubble (about 2 minutes) 6. Cook for 2 more minutes until pancakes are lightly golden brown. 7. Top with your favorite syrup and powdered sugar. Enjoy!
