With this information, we’re working on plans for our future. We have already spent many hours discussing the needs and expectations of our membership. We want to have amenities that we can all enjoy and be proud of, amenities we’ll want to use. This neighborhood was designed for our amenities to be places where we gather, where we connect. We’ve lost that over the years. This Board of Directors is working very hard to get that back. Case in point, check out the Montclair Pool. Wow! It looks

like a different property, and we’re not done yet. This pool is used extensively from the day pools open May 1st, until they close in September. We’re updating the bathrooms, making them handicap accessible. We’ve expanded the pool deck and applied spray deck to make it easier on your bare feet. We’re getting new lounge chairs at all of the pools. The pool looks brand new with new plaster, tile and coping. A new fence and new play set are on their way and we’re working on improvements to the landscape of the whole property, including removing some trees, installing drainage and new sod. We’re doing all we can with the funds we have to make improvements to our amenities. That’s only a portion of what makes our neighborhood what it is. What really makes us is our members. Each one of us makes a difference. Thankfully, we have a neighborhood loaded with gracious, generous and responsible members who contribute to all of our quality of life. I thoroughly enjoy just riding down Ridgewood and Bayview and seeing some of the beautiful landscaping in some of the front yards. We’ve got some green thumbs in the garden club. We are home to business owners, council members, law enforcement, military, TV personalities, teachers, attorneys, medical professionals and nearly everything else. We have a lot of folks who generally do the right thing. Unfortunately, we have to face the fact that we are home to some thugs as well. Our office doesn't get many calls about properties that are maintained and in good shape, though most of them are. However, our ARC department is flooded with complaints of

Looking, from Page 1 residents who neglect their property and blatantly violate our restrictive covenants. Until recently, we couldn’t do much about our covenants or enforcing them aggressively. It’s time for us to come together and amend our covenants that are even older than our amenities. This will require a vote of the membership. The timing was just too tight,

and we’ve had so much going on that we did not want to rush this into the annual meeting. Our management, ARC committee, and Bylaws and Covenants committee are working hand in hand to make proposals to amending our covenants. We don’t have a date, but look for notice of a meeting to vote on amendments. M e m b e r s h i p p a r t i c ip a t i o n has increased slightly at our

stated board meetings. It is great to see some of our membership get involved. I hope more of you will. We go through reports from all of our committee chairs on our amenities, common areas and finances as well as vote to make things happen. This neighborhood belongs to all of us. We all need to stay informed. Once again, don’t forget to go by the office and get your pool access card reactivated.

Spring and Early Summer

Quarterly Landscape Awards HOME OF LESLIE CASTRO ROSARI

The home of Leslie Castro Rosario, on the corner of Ridgewood and 101 Wildoak Dr., is a landscaping that has been admired for many years. It’s well established sculptured beds offer an array of textures and foliage. A large palm, on the edge of the yard, and several sago palms give a tropical feel while the neatly trimmed box woods bring a touch of formality. The ironstone borders not only hold the soil in place but add a beautiful architectural element. The Rosario’s, originally from Puerto Rico, enjoy living in Lake Forest and call this home.

HOME OF ROGER AND CHRISTINA CLARK

What a refreshing view when you pass the home of Roger and Christina Clark at 264 Rolling Hills Drive. After a few years of refurbishing the interior of their home, they turned their attention to the front lawn. As you can well see, the home sits high on a hill, making grass cutting and maintenance almost impossible. With the help of a professional landscaper and adding stone tiers they were able to accomplish the perfect solution. Agapanthus, hydrangea, and azalea’s accent the front entrance with their beautiful color’s. Now the Clark’s are proud to showcase their home.

HOME OF ANNE LANGNER

You will need to drive a little slower while passing the home of Anne Langner at 113 Sweet Briar Circle. Under a canopy of tall pines and oaks sit's a beautiful well kept home, with its red door to welcome you. Even though at first sight the lot seems to be small, it provides more than the eye can see, with stone pathways and sitting areas. While Ann has chosen to leave most of her outside living area natural, she has given much thought to the front entrance. Her selection of plants have provided many shades and colors that sets it apart from most lawns.

GENERAL MANAGERS

Report

Rob Wright, CCM, CAM It always seems that we talk about weird March weather in April. March was very wet! Wet weather negatively impacts usage of the Club, the golf course, the tennis courts and the Yacht Club. The annual meeting was held March 21st at St. Paul’s. Board President, Steve Sasser, gave a very informative report. We also congratulated Ed Kirby and Richard Kersey on winning reelection and congratulated David

Sumner and David Dueitt, as new Board members. Among the topics discussed were the renovation of Montclair Pool, the purchase of new pool lounges, a new swing set and both hardware and software updates. More projects are planned throughout the year. March was a gray kind of month. The wet days had people hunkering down and the nice days had everybody outside trying to catch up. In April we will try and have plenty of events in all of the amenities for the members to participate in. In tennis there will be a club championship tournament, in golf we hold our annual Master’s Tournament and food specials for lunch at the 19th Hole and dinner specials at

the Yacht Club. Look for crawfish boils to start on Tuesdays and taco specials on Sundays. With the time change in March the Yacht Club deck is already enjoying beautiful sunsets, good friendships and great times. On Saturday, March 26th, we had the Children’s Easter egg event. There was a Bounce House, Egg Hunt, a nice buffet and the Easter Bunny made an appearance. The event was held at the 19th Hole. If you don’t get the eblast with all the current events, call the office at 626-0788 to get on that list. Business at the Yacht Club has been very good. We offer specials, like two for one burgers on Wednesdays, family buffets on Thursdays and of course, karaoke

Lake Forest Garden Club your home or lifestyle as a theme.

Written By Lura Kauffman Photos Submitted by Lura Kauffman The Lake Forest Garden Club met on March 3, 2016, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 24 members present, including one new member and four guests present. Judy Baust gave the Inspiration. In the absence of Janet Pruitt, President, Dana Sawyer, 2nd Vice President chaired the meeting and introduced our speaker Luan Ackridge who spoke on Shade Gardening in the Coastal South. Ms Akridge is a retired registered

nurse and has lived in many areas but retired to Mobile and is a Master Gardener and is very active at the Mobile Botanical Gardens. When gardening in the shade in our area Ms Ackridge recommended knowing the degree of shade in each specific area you are planting, during each season. Also know your soil, what type, what Ph, how it retains moisture and how well it drains. Know your plant material – it’s light tolerance, water requirements, eventual size, shape and color. Plan your overall landscape scheme around

Full shade: an area that receives less than two hours of direct sunlight per day. Light/ Partial shade: an area where sunlight reaches for more than 2 hours, but no more than half a day or only broken light comes through the leaf canopy. Problem shade: an area where a lack of sunlight is compounded by drought and infertility. Tips to Remember for Shade Gardening: If unable to plant around trees because of tree roots try using containers filled with shade loving annuals, perennials or vines. Sink the containers part way into the ground to prevent tipping. Remember these areas require increased moisture and fertilizer. If your soil is hard and compact add about 3” organic material and work down to 6” depth; if there are multiple tree roots, don’t damage roots, add soil to elevate the planting height; mulching promotes moisture retention, weed prevention and enriches the soil as it decomposes. Plant or prune to allow for good

air circulation. Dense shrubs act as windbreaks, keeping breezes from passing through the garden. Where air is stagnant and humid, diseases grow and spread. Thinning or removing excessive growth allows air to pass through. Space plants according to their mature size, giving a little extra room to those prone to powdery mildew and other diseases. The initial large gaps should be filled in by the third year. Prepare soil before planting. By incorporating large quantities of organic matter in the soil you will reap the benefits of superior plant growth. Mulch is an easy way to add organic matter. Remember to fertilize in early spring and summer. Ms. Ackridge also had an extensive list of recommended shade plants for our area. Contact a member of the Garden Club if you would like a copy. Linda Locklin wished all members with March birthdays a Happy Birthday and passed out birthday cards. The Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports were approved as presented.

Hostesses Ann Armstrong, Judy Simpson, Patricia Popp and Karola Buysse A motion was made to research the cost of purchasing chair pads for the banquet chairs of the Lake Forest Yacht Club if the Women’s Club is agreeable to a joint venture in this project. Ann Armstrong volunteered to take on the research. The Horticulture Awards were announced by Chairman Kathy Meilleur: First Place: Ann Pierce Camellia; Second Place: Tomasina Werner – Impatiens; Third Place: Rebecca Trosclair - Piernas. The 50/50 was won by Ann Armstrong and Kathy Meilleur and door prizes as well as measles plants

donated by Ms Ackridge were awarded to: Patricia Popp, Linda Ruck, Ann Larsen, Dianne Foster, Ann Armstrong, Dana Sawyer, Ann Pierce, John King, Fay Redmon, Sylvia Dowdle, Rose Mary Probst, Rebecca Trosclair, Lura Kauffman, Judy Baust, Patsy Martin and Karolla Buysse. We meet again on April 7, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Lake Forest Yacht Club for a speaker on Tropical Gardens. All members are invited. New members and guests are always welcome! The Lake Forest Women’s Club met on February 18, 2016, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club with 26 members and 3 guests present. Our speaker, Rob Wright, General Manager of Lake Forest, spoke on the new fee schedule of Lake Forest. The new fee schedule has increased some fees and decreased others. Lake Forest is a large subdivision with many amenities and therefore many expenses and areas that must be maintained as well as improved. The BP oil spill settlement enabled Lake Forest to wipe out all of its long term debt and the new Board is interested in improving our amenities. For instance, per Mr. Wright, the Yacht Club now has a brand new deck and a new floor in the kitchen. There is also a new walk-in cooler that meets OSHA standards and a new freezer. In addition, the bulk head at the Yacht Club had blown out due to salt water exposure and a sink hole had developed. Working with the Army

Submitted by: Lura Kauffman

Rob Wright speaker for our meeting and also General Manager of Lake Forest

Corps of Engineers a new bulk head has been placed at a cost of $88,000.00. Another improvement would be to dredge the yacht basin but unfortunately that is not possible at this time because there is no place to put the dredged soil. At the current time Lake Forest has a plan to form a partnership with the city of Daphne for a study concerning dredging the Lake Forest Lake. There have also been extensive improvements to the swimming pool where swim meets are held so that general swim meets, including the Mobile teams, can now be held there. This is a great improvement and the Lake Forest Team has done very well. There are also plans to renovate the 19th hole and then the Yacht Club. The Yacht Club competes for food

with all the restaurants in our area for staff as well as food. The goal of the Yacht Club is to be less expensive than area restaurants while providing quality fresh food with lots of amenities. After our speaker, Shirley Kossow gave the Inspiration and Jean Wildenhaus read a thank you letter from Prodisee Pantry for our donation. The 50/50 was won by Brenda Perry and Marty Boor and door prizes were won by Sally Gottstine, Nancy Randolph and Martha Thomas. Our April meeting will be on April 21, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. All members are invited. New members and guests are always welcome! Looking forward to seeing you there!

The Fishing Hole SPRING FISHING REPORT

By Billy Harrell Harbor Master

I would like to thank everyone who attended the March Fishing Seminar at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. The turnout was great and hopefully everyone ga i ne d a better understating of how to fish for specks. Reds and flounder in the Bay and Delta. Thanks goodness for the “spring-like” weather changes. The March rains still have the bay in a muddy stage. The water temps are on the rise which signals the fish to move out of the back end of the rivers into the flats & grass beds. Late March and early April is all about finding clear and salty water. If the rain is less than average, the Mobile River and the Theodore Industrial Canal are good places to find speckle trout coming off their winter

Billy Harrell naps. My favorite baits are bright colored plastic on jig heads such as pink, chartreuse or white in dirty water and natural shrimp or a natural shiner minnow in clear water. The big reds are still hanging out in the passes at the Gulf and some are near the shore oil rigs. The sheepsheads are in full spawn and can be caught arounds structure on fresh dead shrimp or live shrimp. The flounder are still deep and have not started their migrations north. The key this month will be to find the salty water. If

Lake Forest upgraded the software that runs the prox. card system that operates the Lake Forest pools access system. This upgrade allows for greater accountability of users and stability fixes. This was a necessary upgrade for the system. Here is the catch! The upgrade wiped out the status of all the cards in the system. All of the cards have been turned off. The owner must bring the card into the office, where we will take information from the card and reactivate it. THERE IS NO CHARGE TO REACTIVATE YOUR CARD. The upgrade has already been completed so that you may bring your card in starting immediately. If you have not brought in your card by May 1st it will not be activated for the start of the 2016 pool season. The process takes just a minute, but is necessary for your card to be reactivated. Don’t wait! For your convenience, the LFPOA office will be open Saturday, April 16, 2016, from 10:00am to 2:30pm, to ensure all members will have the opportunity to come in and have their pool cards reactivated.

We All Need an Estate Plan By: Drew Wenzel, Partner

Regardless of the dollar value of a person’s assets, it is essential to have a well-drafted and all-encompassing estate plan in order to avoid unnecessary costs and complexities in the event of death or incapacity. Creating an estate plan could be as simple as preparing a last will and testament, powers of attorney, and living will or be more complex and include a variety of trusts agreements. A comprehensive estate plan drafted by a competent estate planning attorney can (i) coordinate what happens to real estate, investments, and personal property in the event of death or incapacity; (ii) ease the transfer of assets to heirs; (iii) exempt the personal representative of the estate from statutory requirements such as purchasing a bond and filing inventory, accounting or settlement during probate; (iv) ensure that assets are distributed in accordance with personal wishes; (v) anticipate and mitigate disputes between loved ones; (vi) provide for succession considerations for businesses; and (vii) provide protection for minors and those with special needs. Most simple estate plans consist of a last will and testament, a durable power of attorney for health care, a durable power of attorney for property, and a living will. The purpose of the last will and testament is to provide for the distribution of estate assets after death through the probate court. A durable power of attorney for health care designates a person to make health care decisions in the case of incapacity or the inability to provide informed consent. Durable powers of attorney for property appoint a person to act and manage financial matters in another’s absence, or incapacity. Likewise, a living will provides doctors and hospitals with instructions in the event of permanent incapacity. It is sometimes advisable to have a more complex estate plan which may include living trusts. Living trusts are formed when one party (“settlor” or “grantor”) during his or her lifetime transfers real and/or personal property to a second party (“trustee”) for the benefit of a third party (“beneficiary”). This trust relationship is governed by a “trust agreement” or “trust declaration”. The trust agreement outlines the identities of the settlor, trustee and beneficiary, and governs how the trustee is to manage and distribute the property placed into the trust. Furthermore, the same person can be the settlor, trustee and beneficiary of a living trust. A great advantage of a living trust is that the settlor is able to pass assets seamlessly to beneficiaries upon death while avoiding probate. Passing assets outside of probate is accomplished by re-titling assets in the name of the trust rather than in a person’s individual name. Consequently there are no probate assets and no need to open an estate in the probate court at the settlor’s death thus avoiding expensive and protracted legal proceedings. Because of the myriad of issues that may be of concern, estate plans should be customized to the needs of the individual. Therefore, when developing an estate plan it is highly advisable to discuss estate planning goals and objectives with a licensed attorney who practices estate planning law.
