ABOUT THE COVER
SHARING ALABAMA ART WITH THE WORLD From Alabama to Paris, and everywhere in between, Nall Hollis has seen the world and it informs the artwork for which he is known worldwide. Nall grew up in Troy, in a location that seemed to predestine his life for working in the arts. “I was born an artist,” Nall said. “Both of my grandmothers’ houses opened up onto the city park my family had donated, with an arts and crafts pavilion there in the center of it. I spent a lot of my early life there learning and drawing.” Nall went on to receive his degree from the University of Alabama and then traveled to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. “I got into the Beaux-Arts with the highest marks you can to get into the school,” Nall said. “It certainly surprised a lot of people when I ran away from Alabama to end up in Paris.” It was there after a showing of his artwork that Nall would meet a world-renowned artist that would serve as a mentor to him for several years – Salvador Dali. “He invited me to come and work with him twice a week, and that lasted for three years,” Nall said. “I certainly learned from and was inspired by him in ways that continue to influence my artwork.” Nall said his art can be a reflection of not just his surroundings, but the life experiences that occurred while traveling through different parts of the world. “I’ve always been someone who spends time working in nature, GULFCOASTNEWSTODAY.COM
rather than just trying to copy a style or a feeling,” Nall said. “It’s important to me to actually go to a place, experience the culture, the sights, the smells, the colors – to truly try to understand what is informing the art of that region
“Hitchhiking my way across the Saraha Desert was certainly a source of inspiration,” Nall said. “Traveling to all of these different areas, talking with all of these different types of people – every experience can give you an inside
before I try to work from it.” During some of his winters in Mexico, he experimented with new techniques using colors, moving from black and white etchings to working with color and mosaics. “I really began to experiment more there, mixing the most sophisticated with the least sophisticated, just trying to see what came out,” Nall said. In 1974, Nall visited North Africa and the Middle East, gaining an appreciation of the architecture and culture there.

Rarely does the truth come out to the public on what is actually happening in the world, so you have to go out and experience it yourself.” Getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing unusual events is a key, according to Nall. “You’re involved in the situation,” Nall said. “You’re surrounded by the colors and the sounds and the smells. You’re more involved in the world rather than sitting out in the city.” Nall said getting sober in 1981

has also made a tremendous impact on his art and his life. “I can see great strength of negative energy in my early works when I was addicted to all of these substances,” Nall said. “Getting sober was one of the greatest things in my art – it allowed the positive energy to take over rather than have the negative energy control the voice.” That spirit has led Nall to work with and mentor other young artists who may have been suffering from similar drug and alcohol abuse. “There are a terrible amount of artists and creative people who rely on drugs and alcohol for what they feel is their creativity,” Nall said. “What I try to show the students I work with is the power of the positive energy and thoughts that come with sobriety, that you’re better able to connect with everything when you are sober.” Nall has also partnered with the Retirement Systems of Alabama to help create and purchase artwork for the RSA’s properties all over the state. “Getting to work with them has been a great experience,” Nall said. “Finding ways to support and help local artists around the state has been
wonderful to be able to do. The best way to support art is to buy it, and they’ve enabled that to happen.” For the piece on the cover of this publication, Nall said he had been inspired simply by what he encountered in nature here on the Gulf Coast. “I walk on the beach every morning and see the egrets fly,” Nall said. “Walking on the beach, you find driftwood covered with barnacles and shells covering the sand. All of it gives you a real sense of what this area is.” Nall said the magazine cover work was part of a previous series he had done on shells and egrets for a collector on the Gulf Coast. “The Gulf Coast is a beautiful place and has continued to be a source of inspiration in my artwork,” Nall said. Nall has also created the Nall Art Foundation to support arts endeavors across the nation, with gallery and work space on Equality Street in Fairhope.
