The final Major Project Concept
This brief outlines a future dedicated Gymnastics sports facility, in which a variety of age groups and people with all different kinds of disabilities can visit and share skills. Gymnastics brings people together and taking part in this as a means to mix generations will have many positive outcomes, learning new skills and techniques whist socialising. The successful design will cater to all age groups needs whilst creating an exciting and stimulating place to keep fit and socialise. It should be a visually pleasing design that compliments its up and coming location, inviting people of all ages to come join. It should also be accessible, practical and most importantly sustainable.
The vision The vision is to create space which will attract many different types of people and will result in a mix of ages and cultures coming together to learn from one another, socialise and improve their health whilst introducing gymnastics to them. The building should look attractive from the outside to entice passing trade into the building, yet any changes should be architecturally forward to express the building. The building should be fully restored with a new design. There should be state-of-the-art gymnastics equipment that does not have to be moved. High quality fixtures, fittings and furniture should be incorporated in certain areas to make this a more polite building to visit. The design should prove how the building uses gymnastics as its main attraction. It should influence improvements to other buildings and encourage people to analyse how the current space and buildings in the town can benefit the local people.
Design Requirements The main parts to the design are: The gymnastics sports hall, the gymnastics facility must use both sides of the sports hall carefully thinking about the layout of equipment. The design should include an area and socialise whilst watching their child perform in their session. The design must have toilets and changing facilities. The area should be an exciting space including lots of colour and texture to be inspiring. It should have new design material allowing the children to interact with technology. Visuals and new technology must be in vision from the equipment giving a focus point for the children. The gymnastics hall must be visually pleasing. The design needs to cater to many different people and this should be considered in both the practical and visual design. It needs to appeal to all people but mainly children and young adults. The seating area must be considered or a separate area must be considered to hold a large amount of people for audiences when hosting a competition. Health and safety issues need to carefully considered within the design, particularly the design of the equipment.
How success will be measured Success will be measured by how well the final design answers the brief, practically and visually. Good quality spatial planning and intricate detail will result in a better design. A successful client presentation will intrigue the audience to the idea of a new gymnastics facility to the dedicated gym club and the Salford community. The practicality of the design
would be measured by whether the proposed plans would be granted planning permission and if the building standards and regulations were followed.
