Watch Out For Mushrooms!!

When the weather is wet and humid, mushrooms and toadstools start to appear in our yards, on walk tracks and in parks.

Dogs and cats are natural scavengers and foragers.

* 3 dogs survived the Titanic.

* Dogs can be right or left pawed.

* Dogs noses are wet to help to absorb scent chemicals.

* The French sent a cat into space in 1963

* Domestic cats share 95.6% of their genetic makeup with tigers

* Cats claws are curved downward which means that they can't climb down trees head first, instead they have to back down the trunk.

There are thousands of different fungi (mushroom) species. Each with varying degrees of toxicity. It is best to presume if it's a wild mushroom, it potentially contains toxins and may be poisonous.

Mushroom toxicity varies greatly, but one thing is clear, when a mushroom is toxic, even tiny amounts can be fatal.

Signs of Mushroom Poisoning:

*Vomiting

*Salivation

*Wobbly or drunken stagger

*Diarrhoea

*Lethargy

*Seizures

*Coma

Symptoms can be quite rapid in onset, ranging from minutes to a few hours or with progressive symptoms over 3 - 14 days. Timelines are dependant on what type of mushroom has been consumed.

Toxins in Mushrooms can cause:

*Liver Damage

*Gastrointestinal upsets

*Kidney Damage

If you suspect your dog or cat has eaten a mushroom take them to the Veterinary Clinic immediately. If you have a piece of the mushroom your pet has eaten, take a photo of it or bring it to the clinic for identification. For your safety pick it up with a piece of paper and wash your hands.

Treatment for Mushroom Poisoning:

*Our vets will induce vomiting

*IV fluid treatment will be started to encourage urination and reduce toxicity in the liver and kidneys.

*Activated Charcoal is also often administered

Early intervention gives better outcomes.

Thanks Inverleigh, from Our Shire and Great Victorian Bike Ride.

“The Great Victorian Bike Ride had their final overnight stay in Inverleigh in December and the 2,000+ riders and support staff enjoyed many activities provided by local community groups and businesses.

In the post event analysis Council representatives reported that around $100,000 was spent by our visitors and local Inverleigh residents on the day with local businesses and market stall holders reporting very positive trading on the day.

The “Bag & Tag” service provided by Council officers was extremely popular and appreciated by riders who were able to pick up their goods purchased in Inverleigh the next day at Buninyong, the last stop for the 2022 Great Victorian Bike Ride.

In Bicycle Network Victoria’s post event analysis, riders recorded their enjoyable experience on the final overnight stay by nominating Inverleigh as the second favourite host town during the event with 28% of riders nominating Inverleigh over the other 6 overnight stays.”
