Sambourne House, view from Stafford Terrace Linley & Marion Sambourne moved into 18 Stafford Terrace as newlyweds in 1874, bringing up their family of two children whilst Linley Sambourne pursued his career as an illustrator and photographer. He worked for the weekly satirical magazine Punch for 42 years, producing over 3000 cartoons. Stafford Terrace was built in the 1870s as part of the new developments on the Phillimore Estate, a short walk from the bustle of Kensington High Street, and the leafy open spaces of Holland Park. Italianate in style from the exterior, the Sambournes set about redecorating the interiors in the fashionable House Beautiful style of the day, continually adding to the decorative schemes over the following 35 years.
