Conservation Cleaning Volunteer

Purpose

To support the preventative conservation of Leighton House and Sambourne House Museums by assisting with the careful cleaning and maintenance of their historic interiors, objects, and collections. Working closely with the Conservation and Collection team, you will play a vital role in preserving these unique spaces for future generations. This role provides an opportunity to learn hands-on conservation cleaning techniques and gain insights into the care of historic houses, their archives and collections.

Key Responsibilities

As a Conservation Cleaning Volunteer, you will:

• Assist with the delicate cleaning of historic interiors, including furniture, textiles, ceramics, and other objects using approved conservation techniques and materials.

• Help monitor the condition of objects and spaces, noting any signs of damage or wear and reporting them to the team.

• Develop an understanding of preventative conservation practices and follow conservation cleaning protocols at all times.

• Become familiar with the history of Leighton House and Sambourne House and their collections to better understand the importance of conservation efforts.

• Work alongside the Conservation and Collection team to ensure health and safety standards are upheld while handling fragile materials.

• Participate in team efforts to document cleaning activities and maintain an inventory of materials used.

• Assist with seasonal deep cleaning projects and preparation for special events or exhibitions as required.

Availability

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one regular half-day shift per week for a minimum of three months. Shifts are typically available:

• Mondays and Tuesdays : Morning (10am-1pm) or Afternoon (2:00pm-5:00pm). We may occasionally require support during special conservation projects on other days.

• Leighton House Museum: 12 Holland Park Road, London W14 8LZ

• Sambourne House Museum: 18 Stafford Terrace, London W8 7BH

Training and Supervision

You will receive:

• Full induction and training in conservation cleaning techniques, including how to handle and clean historic objects safely.

• Health and safety training tailored to conservation work.

• Supervision and guidance from the Preventative Conservation Officer or other team members.

Qualities/Skills Required

We are looking for volunteers who:

• Are reliable, detail-oriented, and conscientious.

• Have an interest in heritage, history, and/or art.

• Are comfortable working in historic interiors, which may include dusty conditions and delicate objects.

• Are physically able to carry out light cleaning tasks, including some that may involve working at low or high levels (kneeling or standing on ladders).

• Can follow detailed instructions and work as part of a close-knit team.
