Therme plans flagship US facility
Global wellbeing organisation
Therme Group US and Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser are work together to identify a site for a new Therme facility.
Therme is expanding into the US and has identified the DC-MarylandVirginia (DMV) region as the location for its flagship US facility.
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Washington DC. When we create destinations that not only bring more visitors to our city, but also create new experiences for our residents –that is a win-win,” said Bowser.
“We know people are the key to our city’s comeback, and people want experiences that are fun, support health and wellness and are different from what we already have in the region – that's is what Therme will bring to DC.”
Therme currently operates four locations in Germany and Romania, which collectively attract many millions of visitors each year. Additionally, the company is developing new sites in mainland Europe, Canada, Asia Pacific, South Korea and the UK.

Roger Allen unveils latest edition of RLA
Global’s annual WellnessRealEstateReport
Revenues at wellness hotels rose sharply in 2022 as demand rebounded, despite economic and geopolitical difficulties. This is the standout finding from the 2023 Wellness Real Estate Report – an annual undertaking by RLA Global, an international consultancy specialising in leisure and wellbeing in real estate.
Group CEO, Roger Allen, has recently revealed the fourth edition of the report which evaluates average hotel performance based on data from P&L benchmarking firm HotStats, covering about 2,600 major-, minor- and non-wellness hotels of all classes worldwide. Another key finding was that hotels with wellness offerings
also experienced strong TRevPAR (total revenue per available room) growth in 2022 as markets benefited from a recovery in demand.
In addition, TRevPAR rose by over 53 per cent on the year in 2022 at hotels with ‘minor wellness’ offerings – those generating less than US$1m (€928,500, £807,500), or 10 per cent of total revenue from wellness and leisure.
Meanwhile, TRevPAR climbed by nearly 47 per cent at ‘major wellness’ properties, where wellness and leisure account for over US$1m (€928,500, £807,500) of total revenue.

Timing of exercise important to ensure health benefits
To fully benefit from exercise, timing sessions to optimally match the body’s circadian rhythms is more important than the type or duration of the exercise, according to a report.
A study published in the European JournalofPreventativeCardiology found that for getting the best benefit from exercise – in terms of preventing heart disease and stroke – the optimal time of day to move is between 8am and 11am.
For the study, researchers – led by Gali Albalak at the Leiden University Medical Center – monitored 86,657 participants aged 42-76 over a period of six years, using
wearable trackers to chart heartrate data. During follow-up, 2,911 participants developed coronary artery disease (CAD) and 796 participants developed a stroke.
Risk patterns for CAD, stroke and ischaemic stroke were identified by investigating people's associations with when they had been exercising. Meanwhile, a high relative physical activity during morning hours (8am – 11am) was associated with lower risks.

TOURISM
Mountain tourism represents 16 per cent of global tourist arrivals
Mountain tourism accounts for between nine and 16 per cent of all international tourist arrivals worldwide as people head for sport, health and wellbeing travel. The figure comes from a report, by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which is the first of its kind and was compiled to tackle the lack of mountain tourism-related data.
According to the UNWTO, measuring the volume of visitors to mountains represents the first "vital step" towards unlocking the potential of the sector.
The report calls for concerted work to help raise awareness of the socioeconomic importance of tourism in mountains and targeted policies to create jobs, support small and medium sized businesses and attract green investments in infrastructure.

ROSEWOOD
Wellness potential
Although K-Pop and K-Beauty have hit the mainstream, much of Korean culture is still under-represented, including Korean wellness, says native Leekyung Han who specialises in hospitality real estate and development projects. Check out the most recent issue of Spa Business to hear more about why Korea has so much potential to take o as an exciting new destination for spas and wellness facilities (www.spabusiness.com/ KoreanWellnessPotential).
Urban hospitality
The new Rosewood hotel will exist within The Parkside Seoul, a significant development occupying the former site of the United Nations Command.
Akin to Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London, the hotel’s neighbouring Yongsan Park will serve
as a new hub that stretches from the banks of the Han River to the foot of Namsan Mountain and includes noteworthy attractions such as the National Museum of Korea.
Led by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates – an American architecture firm that has guided several of Rosewood’s most prolific projects across Asia – Rosewood Seoul’s design will channel Rosewood’s guiding 'A Sense of Place' philosophy. This principle ensures that each property’s destination informs the entirety of the guest experience.
Inspired by Seoul’s architecture, – known for its futuristic lines and eye-catching facades – the new hotel will harmonise with the contemporary skyline of the city.
With interiors by design firm Space Copenhagen, Rosewood Seoul will feature 250 rooms and suites, making it one of the largest hotels in Seoul. ●

Lumini Kiosk V2 analyses skin using AI and smart mirror
Making its debut at the global IT exhibition
CES, Lumini Kiosk V2 recommends cosmetic products to consumers using artificial intelligence (AI).
The Korean-made smart mirror (kiosk) scans the face using imaging technology and special
light (said to be different from other diagnostic devices).
The kiosk homes in on six problem areas – the pores, sebum, redness, wrinkles, pigment and any other troubles.
The skin’s condition is also physically checked by a therapist.
AI and big data technology are then used to determine the age of the customer, identify which parts of the face need more care and suggest the most suitable products.
The kiosk can be aligned with specific skincare brands and also provides skin analysis reporting.
“It’s like a personal skincare assistant which can boost the sales of any beauty business,”
Sothys partners with Sofitel London Heathrow

Thanks to the partnerships, the wellness facility is providing a diverse menu of treatments including facials, massages, scrubs and more
“We’re delighted to be working with Sofitel London Heathrow as our latest hotel spa partner,” said Victoria Dello Ioio, Sothys UK sales director.
commented Joey Speers, founder of US distributor Health Fit Systems, adding that the kiosk can comprehensively analyse the skin in just 15 seconds.

Our Team Today!
Tell us about Zerobody Cryo
It features unique technology that combines dry floatation with cold therapy to deliver the same benefits as cryotherapy, but in a less invasive way that’s focused on the deep wellbeing of the individual.
Cold therapy enhances general wellbeing, as well as delivering benefits on both a physical and mental level. For these reasons, it’s a treatment widely used in the spa and wellness, sports, beauty and medical sectors.
What’s the history of this therapy?
It dates back to Roman times but was modernised in 1978 by Japanese doctor Toshima Yamaguchi who saw how cold treatments treated inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis. Today it delivers a wide range of wellness outcomes.
What specific benefits does it offer?
Zerobody Cryo allows operators to deliver traditional cold therapy treatments, with significant benefits in terms of the reduction of muscle pain after exercise, reduction of
stress and anxiety, the stimulation of antioxidant action in the body and the production of sirtuins which support cell renewal and repair and boost longevity.
In spa, wellness and beauty worlds, Zerobody Cryo sessions can be combined with sauna, Starpool’s Zerobody Dry Float, photobiomodulation and molecular hydrogen therapy, to deliver programmes for stress relief, sleep therapy, performance enhancement and longevity.
In a high-level sport world, cold therapy can be combined with infrared therapy, our Zerobody Dry Float or Finnish sauna to provide innovative solutions for effective recovery and top performances.
How is Zerobody Cryo different from other cold treatments?
Its innovation lies in the simplicity, safety and usability of the application, thanks to a patented membrane which is designed to wrap around the body in a uniform way.
This allows the effective transmission of cold at 4-6˚C, so
users can enjoy cold therapy in a safe and non-invasive environment and with less contraindications.
Floating inside the Zerobody Cryo allows the body to benefit from intense cold in comfort and without the risks and disadvantages of some traditional cold therapies. We hear of people who reject cryotherapy as too extreme and find diving into ice water physically difficult, as well as impractical.
Tell us about the equipment
Zerobody Cryo has an insulated metal tank which is available in various finishes and contains 500 litres of water. It’s brought to an operating temperature of 4-6˚C by a refrigerating device.
The system needs free space on the access side, while the chiller must be situated no more than 2m away. It’s also necessary to provide ventilation in the room to avoid overheating the chiller.
Do staff need training to operate the Zerobody Cryo?
Operator training is simple and similar to that required for using our Zerobody Dry Float. Staff can be fully trained in a few hours.
Cold therapy is not a medical treatment and is not intended to cure any pathology or clinical condition. But it provides effective benefits and is widely used all over the world in sport, spa and beauty centres and even by people in their own homes.
