The world's oldest artificial Christmas tree has been discovered lying in a dusty box 140 years after it was made. The wooden tree, which measures 6fthigh and 4ft-wide, was recovered from a house clearance more than a decade ago. It was made by a carpenter who was a member of the wealthy Burchell family in Kettering, Northamptonshire, who built it in the 1870s. Original owner Janet Peck, 81, sold the tree to an antiques dealer ten years ago, along with a number of other items. Mrs Peck, from Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, said: 'We had the tree in our family for generations but were forced to put it away when we had small children for safety reasons because it had candle holders on it. 'My grandmother told me it was probably made by her brother Robert who was a carpenter. He was born in the mid-1800s and would certainly have carved it around 1870. 'I remember it on display as a child in my grandmother's large three-storey home in Desborough and when she died I inherited it. 'We tried to get it restored in the 1960s but it was a bit too dangerous to have as we had small children running around so we put it in a trunk away in the attic.' She added: 'It is wonderful to think that the tree is a world record. It was certainly made as an artificial Christmas tree and used every year for many generations.' Antiques dealer David Payne, 57, bought the tree from Mrs Peck in 2006. He said: 'I bought a job lot of old boxes and junk from Mr and Mrs Peck ten years ago. 'They were antiques collectors and used to contact me from time to time to sell bits and bobs. I just bought a load of things, including boxes, a few years ago. 'I looked at the tree at first but it needed repairing so disregarded it completely until I was sorting through all the stuff a few weeks ago. 'I put it together and it's almost completely intact. It was actually more stable than I first thought so I thought I would contact my local church to ask if it could be displayed in the Christmas tree festival. 'I have never seen anything like it before. It is definitely pre-World War One and it could well be Victorian. Judging by the style and the age of the wood and the metal screws, it is likely it was made in the mid-1800s.' The current Guinness World Record for the oldest fake Christmas tree is a 14ins high decoration which has been in the same family from Bath, which dates back 130 years to 1886.

Ek wil daardie stukkie wysheid nooit weer vergeet nie. Ek het so baie seĂŤninge. Mag ek nooit weer alles as vanselfsprekend aanvaar nie. Alles, ja alles is genade van bo!!!!!

This could be the cause of your child's tossing and turning at night. Parents, you're guilty of this, too. BY LAUREN REARICK
The constant connectivity present in our smartphones may make life and communication easier, but as experts have long cautioned, our screens are a serious impediment to a good night’s sleep. In fact, using them before bed is one of the “harmless” habits that could give you insomnia. Now, new research is warning that this same habit is even more problematic for children and teens. Before you tuck your child in and turn out the lights, you’ll want to make sure that their smartphone is tucked away, too. According to the study conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and published in the journal Pediatrics, children and teenagers are especially vulnerable to sleep disruption when using a smartphone before bed. The reason lies in a child’s development, as the brain, sleep patterns, and eyes are still developing in youths ages 5 to 17. Unlike adults, the eyes of children are not yet fully formed and their internal body clock is more sensitive to the impact of a glowing smartphone screen, Science Daily explains. “Light is our brain clock’s primary timekeeper,” Monique LeBourgeois, an associate professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder told Science Daily. She explains that when light hits the retina in the eye in the evening hours, it suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, delaying sleepiness and pushing back the timing of the body clock. “We know younger individuals have larger pupils, and their lenses are more transparent, so their exposure and sensitivity to that light is even greater than in older individuals. For their study, researchers gathered information from five previous studies that looked at the sleep patterns of children ages 5 to 17. Compiling the findings, researchers discovered that 90 percent of children experience a delay in falling asleep, fewer hours spent sleeping, and worse sleep quality when using a screen before bed. In one particular study, adults and children were exposed to a matching amount of light and light intensity. Following the exposure, children’s melatonin levels fell two times as much. Melatonin is a natural hormone created to help us sleep and is crucial in the sleep process. “Through the young eyes of a child, exposure to a bright blue screen in the hours before bedtime is the perfect storm for both sleep and circadian disruption,” LeBourgeois told Science Daily. It doesn’t matter what activity your child is using their smartphone for either. Studies report that whether texting with friends or watching a video, the activity of using a smartphone boots cognitive arousal and is a form of psychological stimulation that will delay sleep. Parents should be aware of where their child is keeping the screen, too. Researchers note that children who left a phone or computer on overnight in their room were more likely to report sleep disruption. Bedroombased screens are of particular problem in adolescents, as more than 75 percent of youths report having a screen in their bedroom and 60 percent admit to using a screen before bed. In order to help children sleep better at night, LeBourgeois suggests limiting a child’s media usage in the hour before bed, turning off all electronic media devices and charging them in a location outside the bedroom, and removing all electronic media from the bedroom of your adolescent. Most importantly, parents need to practice what they preach and turn their phones off before bed, too, experts said.

An ambitious project from Hyundai Motor Company saw the creation of an enormous 5,556,411.86 m² tire track image carved into the Nevada desert - visible from the International Space Station. 11 Hyundai Genesis vehicles were used to create the incredible image, carefully planned to resemble a replica of a handwritten message from 12-year-old Stephanie to her astronaut father watching from space. Delamar Dry Lake in Nevada was chosen as the optimal destination for the Guinness World Records attempt. The image, of the words 'Steph ♼'s You', was designed to be visible from a distance of 300 kms - with the 11 Hyundai Genesis cars creating lines 30 metres wide on the desert floor. With the pair separated for seven months as Stephanie's father undergoes a lengthy mission, the project brought an emotional connection and an impressive new world record, confirmed by Guinness World Records adjudicators. Experts from Korea, Europe, and the United States worked together to create the 5.55km image - similar in size to New York City's Central Park. The resulting video, titled 'A Message To Space' has been viewed millions of times on YouTube.

To make the act of switching on the town’s Christmas tree lights even more exiting, Latvian e-commerce company Scandiweb constructed the world’s Largest Rube Goldberg for the people of Riga. Possibly the most elaborate way anyone has turned on some festive lights, the chain reaction consisted of 412 individual mechanical steps. The principle of a Rube Goldberg is to complete a simple task in the most complicated way possible. This festive attempt featured a diverse range of devices including traditional parts like wheels, levers and balls, as well as more unusual items like a fan and coffee maker. The chain reaction was set in motion by a red button, pressed by Riga mayor Nils Ušakovs and a Scandiweb representative. The incre-dible finale was initiated by a sound meter that was triggered by the shouts and screams of the guests. The challenge took two months to organise, with Scandiweb employees, construction masters and a number of volunteers helping design and test the incredible Rube Goldberg. 8

BOLPUNTPEN (1938)

This time I thought it would be fun to try and make a Gingerbread Scented Play Dough. You guys…this smells amazing! It also feels like a nice, smooth Gingerbread Dough. I could play with this alongside the kids for a long time and not get bored. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Flour ¼ cup Salt 2 tsp Cream of Tartar 1 cup Water 2 TBSP Vegetable Oil 1 tsp ground Nutmeg 1 tsp ground Cloves 1 tsp ground Cinnamon 1 tsp ground Ginger METHOD: Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook slowly over medium heat, stirring constantly. While stirring the play dough will begin to form into a ball. When it is all incorporated remove the dough from the heat. Let the dough cool to the touch so that you can knead it. Makes about 2 cups. Store in an airtight container. Should last for several months. I also thought it would be fun to put a little twist on this and turn it into a fun gift idea for kids. How fun would it be to give someone a jar of “Homemade Play Dough” that they can make with their own family? I simply filled the jar with all the dry ingredients (leaving out the water and the oil). Then I printed out these fun labels and attached them to the jar. Then I attached a little Gingerbread Cookie Cutter to go along with the gift. I LOVE that. This is a different and fun gift idea. You could also make up the play dough and then give it away already made in the jars. Either way, it’s a fun and inexpensive gift idea that allows children to use their creativity and imaginations!
