By Kacey Deamer While some companies are researching how to use drones or autonomous vehicles to deliver goods to customers, one company has trained a robotic dog to do the job. "Spot" is a four-legged, canine-like machine created by the Google-owned technology firm Boston Dynamics. The robot was first introduced in a 2015 video on YouTube, in which Spot can be seen running, climbing stairs and maintaining its balance even after it is pushed. Now, Spot can also deliver packages that are strapped to its back, Boston Dynamics founder and CEO Marc Raibert announced at this week's TED2017 conference, Wired UK reported. "We've been taking our robot to employees' homes to see whether we could get in the various access ways," Raibert said during the talk, according to Wired. "We're doing very well, about 70 per cent of the way." The robot dog also has a smaller sibling, called "SpotMini," which looks like a cross between a large dog and a small giraffe. SpotMini trotted onstage during the recent event and showcased its abilities, according to the TED blog. SpotMini creates a map of the world around it, which allows the robot to navigate different obstacles with ease, Raibert said in the presentation. The bot traversed an obstacle course onstage and even delivered Raibert a soda, according to the TED blog. Beyond delivery services, Boston Dynamics is testing other uses for these robots, including tasks on factory production lines, The Telegraph reported. Spot and SpotMini are only two members of Boston Dynamics' robot portfolio. The company has also developed a humanoid robot named Atlas that can walk upright across uneven terrain, among others.

Comedy of errors : A man checked into a hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send a mail to his wife. He accidentally typed the wrong email address, and without realizing he sent the mail to a widow who has just returned from her husband's funeral. The widow decided to check her mail, expecting condolence messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted. The son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor and saw the computer screen which read: 'to my loving wife, I know you are surprised to hear from me, they have computers here and we are allowed to send mails to loved ones. I've just been checked in. How are u and the kids? The place is really nice but I'm lonely here. I have made necessary arrangement for your arrival tomorrow. Expecting you darling. I can't wait to see you.

DIY PLASTIC BOTTLE DOLL HOUSES BY MORGAN CUTOLO Haven’t you always wondered what those little keys at the top of your keyboard do? You’ve probably only used them to adjust your volume or screen brightness, but they actually do a lot more. Keep in mind that some of these keyboard shortcuts are different depending on the type of computer you have. You are also able to change these features, and some computers come with pre-set functions for these keys that you have to change manually. So before slamming the keyboard in frustration trying to get them to work, go into your settings and see how your computer has been set up. Pressing the fn button with the F keys will typically enable them to work. Here’s the answer to the mystery of those F keys. You’ll be surprised by how much they can do. For people with diabetes, the right workout does so much more than blast fat and improve stamina. BY CLAIRE GILLESPIE It’s no secret that exercise is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. For people with type 2 diabetes, however, it could be a life-changing part of their treatment plan. Those are the findings of a new study from the University of Turku that assessed the health impact of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on both healthy people and people with diabetes. In the study, published April 10 in Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, the healthy men (all in their 40s and 50s) undertook a two-week training program consisting of either HIIT or traditional, moderate intensity training. A group of people with insulin resistance (some had type 2 diabetes and some had prediabetes, meaning their blood sugar levels were elevated but not yet high enough to indicate type 2 diabetes) completed a similar two-week fitness routine. “Before the training started, the glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity of the insulin resistant people were significantly reduced compared to the group of healthy individuals,” says doctoral candidate Tanja Sjöros, as reported in Science Daily. “However, already after two weeks of high intensity training, which amounted to six training sessions, the glucose metabolism in the thigh muscles achieved the starting level of the healthy control group.” It’s important to increase blood glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in diabetics to avoid damage to the nerves and blood vessels, which can lead to complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb amputations. Glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity improved after both the high-intensity training and the moderate intensity continuous training, suggesting that both are helpful, even though HIIT is definitely more effective. “The group that did moderate intensity training achieved only half of the improvement experienced by the HIIT group during the two-week period. Therefore, this type of training requires a longer period of time. If you have only little time to spare, high-interval training could be a great alternative to traditional training that requires more time but is lower in intensity,” says Sjöros. Leading New York cardiologist Jennifer Haythe, MD, welcomed the results. “This is an important study demonstrating the benefits of high intensity interval training (HIIT) on glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetics,” she says. “Unlike type 1 diabetics who have an absence of endogenous insulin, type 2 diabetics have impaired insulin sensitivity leading to delayed and inadequate uptake and metabolism of glucose. The fact that HIIT can actually improve insulin uptake and sensitivity is terrific news for Type 2 diabetics. In addition, HIIT improved endurance. This is just more evidence that exercise, in this case HIIT, improves health and wellness, and can actually work like medication in patients with DM2.”

This mom gets it—sometimes you have to reach someone's stomach before you can get to their hearts. BY THOMAS ROYAL NIMEN My older brother, older sister, and I are in grade school. One day I come home, and I’m frustrated. I sheepishly ask my mom to no longer put Middle Eastern food in my lunch. She and my father become quiet. He drops his crossword puzzle, they lock eyes, and my mother, through questioning, gets me to reveal that the other students give me a very difficult time when I pull out food that doesn’t look like everybody else’s. So I ask, “From now on, could we do peanut butter and jelly on Wonder Bread and an apple?” And then my brother and sister pipe in and say they’d like the same because they were going through it as well. There were no African Americans in my school; there were no Asians. I don’t think there was anybody from India, nobody from Latin America; not as students, not as teachers, not as administrators. It was primarily a homogenous Protestant/Catholic community.

Volvo Trucks North America has a big surprise to reveal, and it just broke the record for the Largest object unboxed. For the launch of their new model, Volvo VNL, Volvo Trucks recruited the assistance of young fan Joel Jovine to assist with the unboxing, who also happens to have a passion for Volvo trucks. For the title, the silver VNL model was packed away inside of a 80’ x 14’ x 18’ box, which was opened with the help of the excited 3-year-old in a residential neighbourhood. In order to obtain the record, Volvo Trucks had to adhere to Guinness World Records guidelines which stated that the box had to completely encapsulate the Volvo VNL and then needed to be opened manually, using no tools, and that the truck had to be removed from the box without destroying the box during the process. Adjudicator Michael Emperic was on site to verify the record, and make sure that the supersized packaging was also made entirely of standard box materials – cardboard and cellophane. Upon achieving the new record, Magnus Koeck, vice president of marketing and brand management for Volvo Trucks North America said: “Setting a Guinness World Records title was truly remarkable, but what was most rewarding for me was seeing Joel become so excited seeing the new Volvo VNL 760 revealed when he opened the box.” Joel is a resident of Pennsylvania, and was shocked to see such a grand-scale toy truck box waiting for him to be opened.

In the midst of that, our family was slightly exotic. My father’s family was from Syria; my mom’s from Palestine. We had looks that weren’t exactly conforming to what I went to school with. We had food that was different; we had holiday customs that were not the same as everybody else. Sometimes we could stick out. My mother didn’t say too much when I brought up the lunch issue. But about a week later the teacher announces that we should not bring school lunches the following day, nor should we bring lunch money for the cafeteria, that we were going to have some sort of a special food event. The next day at lunch, unbeknownst to me, in comes my mother with boxes and trays of Middle Eastern food. The teacher introduces her. “This is Mrs. Nimen. This is Tom’s mom.” She pulls out the food. She starts serving the kids kibbe. This is a baked dish. You’ll find it in the homes of kings and queens; you’ll find it in the homes of the most humble people. “Try this,” she said. “Here’s some -fataya—these are little triangular bread pies and they have meat in them, or spinach, and pine nuts and onions.” And she pulled out tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanoush, and her homemade bread. She had baked bread for the entire class to take home. Let me tell you about my mother: She was an artist. She dressed like an artist; she spoke like an artist; she had the attitude of an artist. She’s being charming and funny, and she’s riling up the students, and they’re laughing, and I’m blowing a gasket because a week earlier these snarky kids were making fun of everything that I’m eating, and here they are sucking down my mom’s food! My mother did the same thing the next day in my brother’s class and the day after that in my sister’s class. Now, I would like to tell you that this ended some of the low-grade racial issues that my brother and sister and I faced. It did not. But it took a significant edge off, and she, if I think about it now, was a very early pioneer of diversity, in a very crafty way, using Middle Eastern hospitality.

Princess Di wore this timeless fragrance all the time, and we have good news: not only can you still find it, but you can probably afford it too! BY JULIANA LABIANCA

Princess Diana was known for a lot of things: Her charity work and compassion, her shy nature, and, of course, her permanent status as a fashion icon. But what fragrance would you smell if you were lucky to be in her royal presence? According to sources close to her, a mix of orange blossom, gardenia, peaches, and amber. And apparently, she never left home without it. “She always, always, always wore fragrance,” her former makeup artist Mary Greenwell told ABC News. “It’s kind of the final touch of beauty, walking out smelling divine and chic and individual.” The perfume in question is Hermès 24 Faubourg, which, according to Hermès’s in-house perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena is “perfume in the absolute. An explosion of white flowers, enveloping warmth, captivating sensuality.” It wasn’t the only scent Princess Di wore. On her wedding day, the bride-to-be walked down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral wearing Quelques Fleurs, a floral scent featuring a mix of tuberose, rose, and jasmine. The late-royal’s daughter-in-law Kate Middleton would follow in Diana’s floral footsteps. When she married Princess William, Kate Middleton wore Illuminum’s White Gardenia Petals..

Beware! Ignoring the sell-by date could have pretty serious consequences. BY BROOKE NELSON It’s common knowledge that you shouldn’t drink out of the water bottle that you left in a hot car. But how recently have you checked its expiration date? That’s right! Bottled water DOES expire. And while the reason why meat or dairy products have a sell-by date is pretty self-explanatory, you might be surprised that bottled water comes with a time stamp, too. As it turns out, it isn’t the water quality you should be worried about; it’s the plastic that the water comes packaged in (usually polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for retail bottles and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for water cooler jugs). After a certain point in its life, the plastic can begin leaching into the liquid, which affects its taste and could create a serious health hazard. The porous plastic can also cause the water to accumulate odors and other nasty accompaniments from outside. (This is why you should stay away from straws, too.) Still, it’s unlikely that an “expired” (but unopened) bottle of water will do you much harm. And here’s why: the expiration dates are fairly arbitrary. The only reason they were put there in the first place was because of a 1987 New Jersey state law that required all food products to display an expiration date, according to Mental Floss. Since it wasn’t very cost effective to label and ship batches of expiration-dated water to one state alone, most bottled water producers just started giving every bottle a two-year sell-by date—no matter where it was going. That said, New Jersey has since changed its law, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has never established any specific limitations on the shelf life of bottled water. Most producers have just kept it there for efficiency’s sake. So when all is said and done, you can sip that two-year-old bottle of water guilt-free. Just make sure you don’t drink water that’s been sitting overnight or longer.

Hoe vinnig boul Shaun Pollock? Hoe vinnig is Pete Sampras se afslane?

BY MARISSA LALIBERTE Think twice the next time you decide to copy your boss on an email. That simple little “CC” box could send a message that ruins your relationship with the other recipients. A study in Harvard Business Review asked working adults to imagine that their coworker always, sometimes, or rarely CC’ed their boss in emails. The study still needs peer reviews, but preliminary results show that employees felt way less trusted when their coworker “always” copied the supervisor than when they “sometimes” or “almost never” did. The results of the survey aren’t surprising, says career expert Bruce Tulgan, founder of RainmakerThinking and author of It’s Okay to Manage Your Boss. Sometimes the supervisor really does need to stay in the loop with an email chain. But most times, employees are purposely sending the message that they don’t think the recipient follow through with what they’re asking unless the boss gets involved, says Tulgan. “That is an expression of lack of trust,” he says. Breaking down that trust level in your office can have serious consequences. Like in any relationship, coworkers need trust to keep things running smoothly. “When people have trust, there is a much higher level of wanting to deliver for each other,” says Tulgan. “When people have morale, they try harder.” That means more willingness to take risks and make decisions, he says. Even if you don’t trust your coworker to follow through for you, copying the boss in an email is not the best strategy, says career expert Todd Dewett, PhD. “CC’ing is the adult version of being a tattletale,” he says. “It tells your colleague you didn’t agree without telling it to their face, and you want your boss to know without talking about it.” Instead of bringing in the boss, get what you need from colleagues by helping them help you, says Tulgan. For instance, give your colleagues enough time to do what you ask, and gently remind them if the deadline is coming up, he says. Check out these other ways to build trust at work. As a rule of thumb, only about 20 percent of what you do in the office is truly urgent, and those are the only times you should consider looping in your boss, says Dr. Dewett. “The most important client, the most important project, key relationships,” he says. “That’s when you might consider the occasional use of CC.” If a coworker copies your supervisor on an email, instead of rolling your eyes, take a moment to think about your work, says Tulgan. Maybe you’ve been working on the project but haven’t kept your colleague posted, or maybe you’ve been sitting on an assignment too long. But if your coworker is really just being petty, let it go, says Dr. Dewett. “It’s not about me—they’re doing that to everyone,” he says. There are more important things to spend your time and energy on. Like answering that email.
