By Kacey Deamer Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic has just partnered with startup Boom Technology to build a supersonic aircraft, Boom Technology announced. The plane would zip through the skies faster than the Concorde jet or any other commercial aircraft today, Boom Technology said. Aircraft that fly faster than the speed of sound were first developed in the mid-20th century. But regulations and technical challenges halted innovation and expansion of the concept, said Boom Technology, which has headquarters in Denver. The aviation startup said it aims to change that by developing a modern, supersonic passenger jet that travels at Mach 2.2. That's twice the speed of sound, or 1,451 mph (2,335 km/h). The Concorde, a now-retired supersonic passenger jet, flew at speeds of up to about 1,350 mph (2,180 km/h). Boom also aims to set a new speed record for civil aircraft, according to a blog post by Blake Scholl, CEO and founder of Boom. [Supersonic! The 11 Fastest Military Airplanes] At Mach 2.2, passengers could travel between New York City and London in 3 hours and 15 minutes, the company said. The supersonic jet could fly between San Francisco and Tokyo in 5.5 hours, or between Sydney and Los Angeles in 6 hours and 45 minutes. "Building a supersonic airplane is not easy — but it is important," Scholl wrote, describing the startup's motivations. "While we love the hard engineering and technical challenges, what really drives us is the enormous human benefit of faster travel." Commercial air travel's last major speed improvement occurred in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with the introduction of commercial jets, Scholl said. Such jets, he said, made possible the "Hawaii vacation," shortening a 15- to 16 -hour flight to just 5 to 6 hours. Supersonic commercial travel could have a similar impact, making the farthest regions of the planet more accessible, Scholl said. "Imagine traveling across the Atlantic Ocean, getting business done in Europe and being home to tuck your children into bed," Scholl wrote, "or saving two whole days of a typical round-trip itinerary to Asia. … When time is no longer a limit, where will you vacation? Where will you do business?" Boom recently raised $33 million in new funding to develop the startup's first supersonic passenger jet. The company will first build the "Baby Boom," a prototype of the eventual full-size Boom aircraft, Air Transport World (ATW) reported. Baby Boom's first test flight is planned for 2018, Scholl announced at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Wings of Change conference this week, according to ATW. The full-size Boom, which would carry up to 55 passengers in an all-business-class configuration, is targeted for tests in 2020 and certification from the Federal Aviation Administration by 2023, ATW reported.
'n Mondelingse wond is net so sleg soos 'n fisiese een. Vergewe my asseblief as ek ooit 'n gat in jou lewe gelos het.!!
In an out-of-the-way part of the garden, which gets some shade during the hottest part of the day, dig a trench that has one vertical side. It should be around 15cm deep; place an inch or two of sharp sand in the bottom. Choose a stem – about the thickness of a pencil – from the rose you wish to propagate. The wood should be straight (no kinks), ripe (tell by being able to break a thorn off cleanly), and young (from this year’s growth). The cutting should be about 23cm long. Cut just below a bud at the base. Then remove the leaves and thorns from the bottom half. You can leave a couple of leaf systems at the top of the cutting if you wish. Insert each cutting so that it is two-thirds buried, making sure that its base is well into the sharp sand. Firm the sand around the base, to exclude as much air as possible. Cuttings should be set about 15cm apart. Replace soil into the trench and firm it in place; don’t damage the cuttings as you do this. Keep the cuttings watered throughout summer. By November they should have rooted well and be ready for transplanting.
Good news, iPhone users! Your phone has had a hidden mouse all along. BY SHANNON DONOHUE
If you have an iPhone with 3D Touch capability (i.e. the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, or 7 Plus), you’re in luck. Editing text on your phone just got a whole lot easier with this new hidden feature. When you’re typing away and look back on your message to see that you’ve made a mistake, your instinct is probably to tap the screen where you want to edit, or press and hold to create the magnifier tool and edit from there. But sometimes your finger gets right in the way of what you’re trying to edit, so you can’t fully see where the cursor is going, or it doesn’t register your click correctly. Luckily, Apple has remedied this issue with its latest batch of iPhones. Your keyboard now doubles as a mousepad, making edits easier and more precise than the tapping or magnifying maneuvers. To activate the hidden mousepad, press firmly on any key until all of the keys turn blank and you feel a light tap on your finger from the screen, also known as the taptic feature. This turns the keyboard into a mousepad and your finger into the mouse. The keyboard tracks your fingers movement, making the cursor on the screen smaller and easier to navigate. It also solves the issue of blocking your edits with your finger, since it stays on the mousepad the whole time. You can also select groups of text with this feature for bulkier editing. First, make sure the trackpad is activated. Then ease the pressure your finger is applying to the screen without letting go, and press again firmly to activate the highlighter and move your finger to select what you want to edit. This new feature definitely takes some getting used to, as it is incredibly responsive to how much pressure you apply and much faster and more accurate than the old “tapping” methods. But once you get the hang of the iPhone’s handy new editing tool, you’ll be typing away all day with ease.
Nope, it's not because they're trying to buff out that scratch above your bumper. BY SAM BENSON SMITH
Say you’re driving on your local road, and you enter a construction zone. The construction is wrapping up for the day, the sun is coming down, and you just miss the four-sided “Reduce Speed Ahead” sign. You come to the octagonal Stop sign, and notice a state trooper pulled up behind you. (There’s a reason why the signs you encountered have different shapes, by the way.) The trooper’s flashers turn on, and you realize that you may have been speeding. You pull over, and as the officer approaches the car, you hear a quick tap on the back of your car. The officer touches your tail light as he came to your window, and you come to realize that you’ve seen this before. Actually, you’ve seen this quite a bit. This common cop practice isn’t rooted in superstition, and it isn’t a secret. As it turns out, it’s based in the officer’s well-being. According to The Law Dictionary, this routine maneuver serves as a sort of bread crumb left to prove that the police officer had approached that particular vehicle. Before dash cams and body cams, the fingerprints left on the tail light served as a primary form of evidence about the traffic stop. If the officer’s safety were to be jeopardized by the driver, investigators could track that hand stamp to the suspect in question. Surprised? Additionally, the tap can serve as a means of jarring an intoxicated driver or a driver in possession of illegal materials.
The landscape could humble anyone, but it holds particular meaning to one dad. BY MARISSA LALIBERTE
Fifteen-year-old David Phillips had spent six months planning a hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with his Boy Scout troop. No one could have known it would end in tragedy. When the group arrived at the starting point for the hike, the scouts found out there was a problem with their permit. To sort it out, the five boys and three leaders trekked back up to the ranger station—only to find out it was closed. “It was a comedy of errors,” says David’s dad, Robin Phillips. By the time the boys got moving, they’d already tapped into most of their water. (If you’re active, keep an eye out for symptoms of dehydration, too.) In the blistering sun, temperatures reached a scorching 115°F. Even the leaders were having trouble trudging on. It took all day, but the group finally made it down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Heat exhaust was sinking in. “My son made it about 100 yards from the river and then dropped,” says Robin. Two scouts from David’s troop raced to the river to get him water.
The longest human tunnel traveled through by a dog skateboarder is 30 people and was achieved by Otto the Skateboarding Bulldog in Lima, Peru, on November 8 2015. Otto's owners, Luciana Viale and Robert Rickards, were inspired to get a bulldog after watching videos of former record holder Tillman the bulldog. Along with skateboarding, Otto is also a talented surfer. Luciana and Robert say they are grateful for all the wonderful friends they have made through Otto.
When the boys arrived, the Colorado River’s last rafting trip of the day was passing by. As luck would have it, the riders were paramedics. They rushed to give David first aid before going for help. The paramedics radioed an aircraft overhead and asked the park service to send a rescue team, then flagged down more hikers from the trail. But it was to late. David passed away from heat exhaustion. Without the group on the raft, the heat probably would have killed the rest of the boys, too, says Robin. But they were airlifted out the next day and returned home with heavy hearts. It’s been 21 years since the boy’s death, and hiking still holds a strong memory of David for his family. The summer before the tragedy, Robin had been laid off, which turned into a blessing because he used severance money to devote time to his family. David and his dad spent the summer backpacking all over the High Uintas Wilderness in Utah, where snow-topped peaks reflect tower over glacier-formed lakes. “We were probably able to see over 100 different lakes,” says Robin. Robin’s grandfather showed the spot to his own son, who in turn introduced his son. Robin is continuing the tradition. He’s brought his six biological children and their 23 kids—a couple of whom are named after David—plus his two foster children to the High Uintas. The photo Robin took of Christmas Meadows in the High Uintas won the Reader’s Digest“From Sea to Shining Sea” photo contest and appeared on the July/August 2017 magazine cover. To Robin, it isn’t just a breathtaking landscape—it’s also a powerful reminder of his late son. “My grandfather called that whole area around the High Uintas ‘God’s country,’” says Robin. “He wasn’t big on going to church, but he always told us that whenever he was up there he could tell that God loved him because He had created someplace so beautiful.”
If you don't know jack about jackfruit, pay attention, because you're about to meet your new protein substitute. BY GISELLE CASTRO
Take a walk down the produce aisle and you may spot a light green, oval-shaped, nubby fruit. While every fruit is distinctive, this one in particular is hard to ignore. The jackfruit, which is native to Southeast Asia, parts of India, Jamaica, and South America, is fast becoming the latest popular meat substitute in vegan diets and vegetarian meals. From pulled “pork” sandwiches to desserts, jackfruit has proven to be a versatile plant that both meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike can appreciate. Here’s what you need to know about this trending tropical fruit. Jackfruits pack in a lot of nutrition. They’re high in protein (with 2.8 grams per cup of sliced fruit, which is 5 percent of your daily value for protein), plus calcium, and thiamine, vitamin A, and carbohydrates. They’re also rich in energy and dietary fiber, and free from saturated fats or cholesterol. In some regions, jackfruits are even being used to treat conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, diarrhea, tuberculosis, fever, and liver cirrhosis. And because the fruit is so easy to grow—a jackfruit tree can yield up to 200 jackfruits a year— there are efforts being made right now to plant them throughout the world as a way to combat food shortages in Third World countries. At the market, you may see two seemingly different types of jackfruit, but it’s the same fruit—only one is mature and the other is young. The young jackfruit is sweet and crunchy, and the older version is usually softer and tastes less sweet. You may also find jackfruit in sold in cans. According to vegan chef and owner of Community Cafe in St. Petersburg Florida, Mandy Keyes, suggests opting for the younger version if you plan on cooking savory meals. “We researched and found that young jackfruit in a can is much easier to work with,” she says. Unlike some fruits, jackfruits are entirely edible. The seeds can be boiled, roasted, or ground into flour, depending on the dish you’re making. The flesh, which looks like orange-yellow color bulbs, is what makes this fruit so versatile. It can be made into ice cream, chips, jam, soup, candy, and more. You can slice it into a fruit salad or use it in a jam, jelly, or chutney. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you know that it can be a challenge to get adequate protein. Consider buying jackfruits to meet your daily quota for good health.

Hair loss is not just a guy’s problem. In fact, some 40 percent of Americans with hair loss are women, according to the American Hair Loss Association. If you’re starting to see your strands thinning, consider trying this simple at-home strategy: scalp massage, which may promote hair growth. “A scalp massage can increase blood flow to the scalp and to the hair follicles,” explains Debra Jaliman, MD, a dermatologist in private practice on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist. A study in the January 2016 issue of ePlasty shows that just four minutes of scalp massage a day increases activity among genes known to promote hair growth, and dials down the activity of genes linked to hair loss and inflammation. What’s more, study participants also noted an improvement in hair thickness. “Gentle massaging of the scalp can increase blood flow to the hair follicle, the root of the hair, which is the only living part of the hair,” says Abraham Armani, MD, medical director of Armani Medical Hair Restoration in Dallas. “Massaging works by dilating the very small arteries within the scalp, increasing blood flow to the hair follicle and therefore prolonging the growth cycle of hair.” Scalp massage for hair loss also reduces stress, which can worsen hair loss. “Not only does the boost in blood circulation to the surface of the skin aid in delivering more nutrients, it’s also relaxing,” Dr. Jaliman says. A study in an October 2016 issue of the Journal of Physical Therapy Science backs this up. It found that twice-weekly scalp massage lowers levels of stress hormones, blood pressure and heart rate, all of which are known to be elevated during times of emotional or physical stress. When to do scalp massage? Scalp massage for hair growth can be done while you’re shampooing in the shower or when your hair is dry pre-shampoo. “You should aim for at least three minutes if you are working with both hands because that encompasses a large surface area,” says Jessie Cheung, MD, director of the Jessie Cheung MD Dermatology & Laser Center in Willowbrook, Illinois. There’s no need to use any oil or serum, she says. But some people like to include aromatherapy. “Relaxing scents such as lavender, and invigorating scents such as eucalyptus or mint, will augment the circulatory boost,” Dr. Cheung says. How to do scalp massage? A gentle fingertip massage is a good jumping off point. “That’s enough to stimulate the blood flow,” Dr. Cheung says. “If you tend to hold a lot of tension in your neck and scalp, you can increase the pressure gradually.” Start from the edges of the hairline and work your way in toward the crown, she suggests. “You want to stimulate the lymphatic drainage as well, and that starts at the periphery.” Dr. Jaliman adds: “Kneading, in particular, aids with warming up the skin, which helps increase blood flow to the scalp.” Keep in mind that significant or rapid hair loss may be a sign of an underlying medical condition and should be evaluated by a doctor.
