Ek stel die HERE altyddeur voor my; omdat Hy aan my regterhand is, sal ek nie wankel nie. Psalms 16:8
By Tereza Pultarova It's harvest season in many parts of the world, but on one farm in the United Kingdom, robots — not humans — are doing all the heavy lifting. At Hands Free Hectare, an experimental farm run by researchers from Harper Adams University, in the village of Edgmond in the U.K., about 5 tons (4.5 metric tons) of spring barley have been harvested from the world’s first robotically tended farm. Everything from start to finish — including sowing, fertilizing, collecting samples and harvesting — has been done by autonomous vehicles on the farm, according to the researchers. The team behind the project thinks that robotic technology could improve yields in agriculture, which is necessary if the world's growing population is to be fed in coming years. The researchers tackled this problem by using commercially available agriculture machines and open-source software that is used to guide hobbyists’ drones. "In agriculture, nobody has really managed to solve the problem of autonomy," said Jonathan Gill, mechatronics researcher at Harper Adams University, who led the project."We were like, Why is this not possible? If it's possible in drone autopilots that are relatively cheap, how come there are companies out there that are charging exorbitant amounts of money to actually have a system that just follows a straight line?" The researchers purchased several small-size agricultural machines, including a tractor and a combine, a machine for harvesting grain crops. They then fitted the machines with actuators, electronics and robotic technology that would allow them to control the machines without the presence of a human operator. "The first stage was to make it radio controlled," Gill said. "This was our first step towards autonomy. From that point, we moved on to preprogram all the actions that need to be performed into the autopilot system." Gill's collaborator, Martin Abell, who works for Precision Decisions, an industrial agricultural company that partners with the university, explained that the system follows a certain trajectory with preprogrammed stops to perform certain actions. "The vehicles navigate entirely based on the GPS, and they are just essentially driving towards targets that we predetermined," Abell said. "At different GPS targets, there are different actions designed to be carried out." Abell said the researchers struggled to make the machines follow a straight line, which initially resulted in quite a lot of crop damage. However, the scientists think they will be able to fix the problem in the coming years and will eventually achieve better yields than a conventionally maintained farm of the same size could produce. To monitor the field and take samples of the plants, the researchers developed special grippers attached to drones. As the drone flies above the field, the grippers can cut off some samples and deliver them to the researchers. The scientists said that the robotic technology could enable future farmers to more precisely distribute fertilizers and herbicides, but could also lead to improvements in soil quality. Currently, to achieve all the required tasks in a reasonable amount of time, farmers rely on very large and heavy machines. In the future, they could use flocks of smaller robotic tractors and harvesters, the researchers said. The farmer would, for example, be able to apply fertilizer only to the plants that are doing poorly and wouldn’t waste it on those that don't need it, the researchers explained. "At the moment, the machines used in agriculture are large, they operate quickly, they cover large areas of ground quickly, but with it comes inaccuracy," Abell said. "Small machines working with smaller working widths would provide a means to bring the resolution down. Instead of a 30 meters sprayer, you would have a 6 m sprayer, and that’s just the beginning of making things smaller." The Harper Adams team plans to use the robotically harvested spring barley to make a limited batch of "hands-free" beer that will be distributed to the project’s partners as a token of thanks. In the coming years, they want to focus on improving the precision of the procedures and quantify the effects of the robotic technology on the yields. 2
"Mamma, regtig, alles is ok! Regtig!", stel ek my Moeder gerus.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women and is on the rise among women ages 29 to 45. These are the common heart problems that plague the fairer sex and what you need to know to show your ticker some TLC. By Jessica Migala
Heart disease looks different in women. “Women tend to have heart disease without blockages in big arteries,” says Holly Andersen, MD, Director of Education and Outreach at the Ronald O. Perelman Heart Institute at New YorkPresbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Doctors suspect some cases are due to coronary artery spasms or a brief, sudden narrowing of the coronary arteries. Spasms can cause heart attacks, and symptoms appear as severe chest pain that lingers from 5 to 30 minutes. “Broken Heart Syndrome”: Yes, that’s a real thing. Technically called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, the condition happens almost entirely in women, according to Dr. Andersen. “We don’t understand it completely, but it may have to do with an outpouring of adrenal hormones like norepinephrine in response to emotional or physiological stress,” she says. “It completely stuns the heart.” Stress alone is a bigger risk factor in heart disease for women than men. This one habit can help protect against the toxic effects of stress. The term is short for spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Women are most at risk postpartum, when connective tissue tends to be loose. “Everything gets loose to allow for delivery,” says Dr. Andersen. With SCAD, the connective tissue in the middle portion of the artery tears, and the symptoms look similar to a heart attack. It’s often missed, she points out, but women can get an idea of where they stand. “Pregnancy is a window into the heart,” says Dr. Andersen. If you had gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, or preterm labor, you’re more at risk for future cardio problems. This is what a heart-healthy day might look like. Coronary Microvascular Disease: You might think the bigger arteries that supply blood to your heart are the most important, but the small ones matter, too. Although this condition isn’t as well understood and affects mostly young women, damage to small blood vessels can block oxygen from reaching the heart muscle, Dr. Andersen notes. It’s hard to diagnose, but one symptom is chest pain that lasts longer than 10 minutes. (In coronary heart disease, it can last five minutes or less.) It may also be accompanied by shortness of breath, sleep problems, fatigue, or lack of energy, according to the American Heart Association. These are the scary chest pains most often mistaken for a heart attack. Atrial Fibrillation: The condition is marked by an irregular heartbeat that can increase your risk of a stroke five-fold, according to the American Heart Association. Patients with this condition who are older than age 75, 60 percent are women, research shows. And dying from AFib and its complications is more common among women than men. Still, the AHA points out that AFib is often not taken seriously. Symptoms include fatigue, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, and chest pain. If you notice any of these, talk to your doctor—they do not mess around when it comes to heart symptoms. It’s not all about chest pain: Women’s symptoms also look different than men’s. Dr. Andersen notes that 40 percent of women don’t have chest pain, but they know something is wrong. One big clue: pain in your chest, jaw, or arm when you exert yourself (say, climb up stairs) or are in emotional distress. “This doesn’t just happen once and a while, but every time,” says Dr. Hendersen. Women may also feel squeezing or fullness in the chest, shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness. You may also think you have heart burn or indigestion. Women are more likely to wait: Women more often stall before calling 911, according to 2015 research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In fact, 70 percent of women took longer than an hour to get to the hospital, compared to 30 percent of men—and women were 34 percent more likely to die at the hospital than men. “Women who believe they’re having a heart attack are more likely to close their eyes and pray it goes away,” says Dr. Hendersen. “If you think something is wrong, don’t wait,” she adds. Even if it does turn out to be something like indigestion, the ER doctors would much rather treat you for that—don’t let embarrassment or the fear of troubling others keep you at home. Get checked: Take it upon yourself to start the conversation with your doctor about your heart risk. After taking your medical history (including your family history), you’ll need two screenings: blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar) and a physical exam (blood pressure, BMI, and waist circumference). With all the info, your doc can assess your risk for heart disease and help you come up with an action plan.

BY MARISSA LALIBERTE
On wedding days, the bride’s dress usually gets all the attention. And with the gorgeous numbers the royals wear for their weddings, we can’t blame people for talking. But even though we might never be able to afford an Alexander McQueen gown like these royal women, a spritz of perfume is a more affordable way to feel like a true princess. Queen Elizabeth II: No sources have confirmed the fragrance Her Majesty wore when marrying Prince Philip in 1947, but a Floris scent would make sense. The family-run perfumers have had a Royal Warrant since 1820, and the company is still the Queen’s favorite. Floris hasn’t revealed Her Highness’s favorite scent, but experts speculate it’s probably the same as her favorite flower: White Rose, according to The Telegraph. The perfume has a musky, powdery base, with notes of rose, jasmine, and carnation. Princess Diana: During her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, Diana Spencer’s wedding day perfume almost caused a royal mess—quite literally. Princess Diana’s makeup artist Barbara Daly revealed that before the ceremony, the bride accidentally spilled perfume down her dress when trying to dab it onto her wrists, according to The Express. Luckily, Daly told Diana to hide the stain by holding the dress so it looked like she was keeping it off the ground. Hopefully, she also used these tricks for making perfume last longer to make the mishap worth it. The unruly perfume was Quelques Fleurs L’Original by Houbigant, which the French company describes as a sensual scent with notes of jasmine, tuberose, lily of the valley, and sandalwood. Her wedding scent wasn’t her favorite though. Kate Middleton: Clarence House (the official residence of William and Kate) reported that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, wore a little-known perfume for her wedding day in 2011, according to the Daily Mail. The brand, Illuminum, has only been around for about 10 years. Kate’s choice, White Gardenia Petals, is ultra feminine with notes of white gardenia, muguet, and jasmine, with amber tones as its base. As soon as the news broke that it was the Duchess’s wedding scent, the bottles sold out within moments, and eager buyers were put on a two-week waiting list. 5
Did you know each digit has its own purpose? BY CLAIRE NOWAK
Everyone has memorized exactly two ZIP codes: 90210 and whatever their own ZIP code is. We can thank a certain TV show set in Beverly Hills for that. Aside from that, general knowledge on these five-digit figures is pretty limited. We put them at the end of addresses, and then our mail magically gets delivered to the right location. But through some crafty methods of detection (online research), we discovered one of the most highly kept secrets all mail carriers know: what ZIP codes really are and how they work. (OK, so it’s not really a secret, but now you have something to talk to your post office about). The entire practice of using ZIP codes is a relatively new system that was put in place on July 1, 1963. Before that, starting in 1943, the U.S. Postal Service used a series of postal zones for large cities only. If you were writing an address, that number would go after the city and before the state, and mail carriers used it to sort mail more efficiently. In 1944, a postal worker named Robert Moon submitted an idea for a new postal zone system that would cover the whole country. The first number would stand for a group of states, starting at 0 on the east coast and ending at 9 on the west coast, and the second and third numbers would specify to which sectional center facility (the place where mail gets processed and distributed) the mail should go in that area. The U.S. Postal Service eventually adopted this plan with the addition of two numbers at the end to indicate the proper post office or postal zone, and thus, the Zone Improvement Plan Code—or ZIP code—was born. About 20 years after the first ZIP codes were put into place, the Postal Service made one more tweak to the system: the four digits that come after your ZIP code. These stand for a specific area that any given post office covers. The sixth and seventh numbers refer to a delivery sector, which could be a group of streets, one large building, or another small geographic area. The last two stand for a delivery segment, like the floor of an office building or one side of a street. Even though the U.S. Postal Service says proper credit for the ZIP code’s creation goes to a committee of people, our addresses would look quite different if it weren’t for Moon’s numerical inspiration. 6

British stuntman Alastair Moffatt has earned worldwide fame thanks to his incredible driving and parking skills. His most recent achievements have secured him, and his younger brother John, a coveted place in the new Guinness World Records 2018 book. On the set of CBBC’s Officially Amazing (UK) TV show in Stafford, UK, the pair successfully attempted to break the record for the Tightest gap driven through by two cars on two wheels. In order to work out the distance for this record, the adjudicator took the distance between the two obstacles and then took away the height of the cars. They managed to squeeze through a tiny gap, marked out by two poles, leaving a total space of just 1.29 metres. This narrowly broke the previous record of 1.3 metres that was set by Han Yue and Bao Tengjin from China. Alastair later appeared on another TV series, Discovery Channel Canada’s show Daily Planet, attempting to better his own record title for the Tightest gap driven through on two wheels. Going for the record title at Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport in Bobbington, Staffordshire, UK, the pro driver had to deal with some extremely windy conditions that knocked his Mini Cooper straight onto its side during his first attempt. Alastair explained how much potential danger there is doing such stunts. "The car could fall over or catch fire – they’re designed to be on four wheels not two," he said. However, Alastair picked himself and his vehicle back up and broke the record with a measurement of 44.5 cm. "Total failure to total success all in one day!" he said. "To be a multiple world record holder, it’s pretty special really," Alastair continued. "It’s something I always wanted to do when I was a kid. I didn’t think it would be possible – but here we are!" The stunt driver has broken a huge number of records during his career, but one of his most impressive titles remains the Tightest parallel parking in reverse. Driving a classic Mini, he accelerated backwards to 64 km/h then pulled off a handbrake turn, spinning a full 180° and, in one seamless manoeuvre, sliding between two parked Minis. The space he slotted into was a mere 34 cm longer than the car he was driving, breaking the existing world record. 13

For a flight that short, all of the airport stress might not be worth it. BY MORGAN CUTOLO
There’s actually a flight so short that you end up spending more time on the taxiway (taking off, landing, and driving on the runway) than you do in the air. United Airlines offers a flight that has a total airtime of 16 minutes. It runs from San Francisco, California to Santa Rosa. The total route is 62 miles long and in total takes about 45 minutes (that includes the time spent on the ground in the plane as well). If you were to drive from San Francisco to Santa Rosa it would take you about an hour and ten minutes with no traffic, so flying definitely has its perks. People escape to Santa Rosa for the weekend to explore the Sonoma Valley famous for its vineyards and restaurants. There are also attractions for kids so it’s a great place for the whole family to visit. Now, if only the flight to Hawaii was that short. 15
