Source: ancient-origine.com The world’s earliest illustrated Christian book has been saved by a British charity which located it at a remote Ethiopian monastery. The incredible Garima Gospels are named after a monk who arrived in the African country in the fifth century and is said to have copied them out in just one day. Beautifully illustrated, the colours are still vivid and thanks to the Ethiopian Heritage Fund have been conserved. Abba Garima arrived from Constantinople in 494 AD and legend has it that he was able to copy the Gospels in a day because God delayed the sun from setting. The incredible relic has been kept ever since in the Garima Monastery near Adwa in the north of the country, which is in the Tigray region at 7,000 feet. Experts believe it is also the earliest example of book binding still attached to the original pages. The survival of the Gospels is incredible considering the country has been under Muslim invasion, Italian invasion and a fire in the 1930s destroyed the monastery’s church. They were written on goat skin in the early Ethiopian language of Ge’ez. There are two volumes which date from the same time, but the second is written in a different hand from the first. Both contain illustrations and the four Gospels. Though the texts had been mentioned by the occasional traveller since the 1950s, it had been thought they dated from the 11th century at the earliest. Carbon dating, however, gives a date between 330 and 650 – which tantalisingly overlaps the date Abba Garima arrived in the country. So the first volume could be in his hand – even if he didn’t complete the task in a day as the oral tradition states. The charity Ethiopian Heritage Fund that was set up to help preserve the treasures in the country has made the stunning discovery. It was also allowed incredibly rare access to the texts so experts could conserve them on site. It is now hoped the Gospels will be put in a museum at the monastery where visitors will be able to view them. Blair Priday from the Ethiopian Heritage Fund said: "Ethiopia has been overlooked as a source of these fantastic things. "Many of these old Christian relics can only be reached by hiking and climbing to remote monasteries as roads are limited in these mountainous regions. "All the work on the texts was done in situ and everything is reversible, so if in future they can be taken away for further conservation we won’t have hindered that. "The pages had been crudely stitched together in a restoration in the 1960s and some of the pages wouldn’t even turn. And they were falling to pieces. "The Garima Gospels have been kept high and dry which has helped preserve them all these years and they are kept in the dark so the colours look fresh. "This was the most astounding of all our projects and the Patriarch, the head of the Ethiopian Church, had to give his permission. "Most of the experts did the work for nothing. "We are currently undertaking other restoration programmes on wall paintings and religious texts. "We believe that preserving Ethiopia’s cultural heritage will help to increase visitor revenue and understanding of the extraordinary history of this country.".
Uis is a tiny town located in one of Namibia's most beautiful desert regions, Damaraland. The village is located in the shadow of the Brandberg Mountain which is home to the world famous White Lady rock painting, said by some to be over 20 000 years old. Being also situated on the main road between the coast and the Damaraland interior there is s reasonable amount of traffic and Uis manages to eke out an existence based almost entirely on this traffic passing through the area. There is a small supermarket, guesthouse and a petrol station, together with a few other small shops. Tin has been mined in the Uis region since the early 1900's and the town was established in 1958 as a mine workers residence when a South African mining company started operations there and increased production. Today when approaching Uis, the first thing you see is a huge white mountain which is in fact the old mine dump for processed tin ore.
Everything you need to get your computer cleaner and running faster is already in your house. BY TRISH BARBER When was the last time you gave your computer a spring cleaning? I’m not talking about deleting old files and organizing your pictures—I mean the physical machine. You may not realize it, but your computer is actually dirtier than a toilet seat. And if the germs aren’t incentive enough to clean it, your computer, printer, and other home office gear work better and faster if you keep them clean and dust-free. Luckily, you can clean your devices with things you already have in your home. Before you start cleaning, make sure that all your equipment is shut off and unplugged. Then start dusting, preferably with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels and tissues since these can scratch the monitor. For a thorough cleaning, try one of these smudge-fighting techniques. BABY WIPES Periodically shaking out your keyboard is a good way to get rid of the dust and debris that gathers underneath and in between the keys. But that’s just half the job. Use a baby wipe to remove the dirt, dried spills, and unspecified gunk that builds up on the keys themselves. MOUTHWASH Out of glass cleaner? A strong, alcohol-based mouthwash will work as well as, or better than, glass cleaner on your computer monitor or TV screen. Apply with a damp, soft cloth and buff dry. Remember to use only on glass screens, not liquid crystal displays! The alcohol can damage the material used in LCDs. Mild all-purpose cleaner can also be used to clean the computer’s exterior. NAIL POLISH REMOVER You can keep computer keyboards clean with nail polish remover and an old toothbrush. Simply moisten the brush with remover and lightly rub the keys. Nail polish remover is also great for removing ink stains. VINEGAR Mix equal parts white vinegar (avoid other types, like apple cider vinegar) and water in a bucket. Dampen a clean cloth in the solution— never use a spray bottle; you don’t want to get liquid on the circuits inside—then squeeze it out as hard as you can, and start wiping. Keep a few cotton swabs on hand for getting to the buildups in tight spaces (like around the keys of your keyboard). If you have a mouse with a removable tracking ball, use a 50/50 vinegar-water solution to clean it. First, remove the ball from underneath the mouse by twisting off the cover over it. Use a cloth, dampened with the solution and wrung out, to wipe the ball clean and to remove fingerprints and dirt from the mouse itself. Then use a moistened cotton swab to clean out the gunk and debris from inside the ball chamber (let it dry a couple of hours before reinserting the ball).
In 1991, the main mining operation closed down because the price of tin dropped far enough to make it uneconomical. There is still minimal work progressing on the mine site today. Technology has improved enough to make it worthwhile to re-process the already excavated ore that was originally discarded and there is a tiny reprocessing plant located near the old mine dumps. This ore is processed to an enriched state and then taken to Walvis Bay for export. Without the mine the town struggled to survive and today it is a shadow of it's former self. One product that Uis still produces is rocks and minerals. Namibia is well known as a mineral rich country and geologists come from all over the world to study in Namibia because much of the interesting geology and rare rocks are situated at ground level rather than on top of mountains or deep underground. It is possible to find some excellent examples of rock crystals and minerals around Uis. These stones are collected but the locals and sold at bargain prices to the passing tourist trade. The rocks themselves have no real value and you are not likely to make anything by prospecting at Uis, there are however beautiful examples of many different minerals available. Selling these rocks is part of the extremely shaky economy of Uis and you can be sure, if you do buy something, that you are purchasing a true Namibian souvenir and you will most likely get it for an excellent price. There is a story of desert tragedy associated with the Uis area. At the beginning of the 20th century, so the story goes, a group of travellers from the north were making their way thought the desert to the ocean. They were following game tracks for most of the way, but came to the main road to Swakopmund nearby where Uis is now located. The travelers decided to stop for the night and being short of fuel on which to cook their evening meal, they collected the branches of dead euphorbia bushes in order to make their campfire. Euphorbia bushes are a very common in Damaraland and their spiky branches help make the Damaraland scenery so unusual. Unfortunately for our group of travelers however, most species of euphorbia are also highly toxic. After cooking their meat over their makeshift campfire, they went to bed, early one would suppose in order to be ready for the long journey the next day. There was never another dawn for any of our heroes. The toxic smoke from their campfire was so strong and the food so impregnated with poison, the whole group of 16 people died in their sleep. They were buried where they lay and the graves are still visible today just outside the Uis town boundary.
ONTSPAN. My antwoord was, "Nee, ek ken hom nie."

Waarom is jy vandag so vol bekommernisse en vrees? Sit terug, God is in beheer, en al wat jy moet doen is om Hom te vertrou. Hy is ten volle in beheer!

DOES KETCHUP HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED? WE’RE ANSWERING ONE OF THE MOST HOTLY CONTESTED QUESTIONS OF OUR TIMES BY BRYCE GRUBER Over 300 million Americans used ketchup last year according to a Simmons National Consumer Survey, but apparently most of us have no idea how to properly store this tangy, sweet condiment, Does ketchup need to be refrigerated after opening or can it just hang out on your counter? It turns out that mostly depends on where in the product’s life cycle you are. Nicole Kulwicki, director of brand building for Heinz Ketchup, says the product doesn’t need refrigeration until after you open it. “Because of its natural acidity, Heinz Ketchup is shelf-stable. However, its stability after opening can be affected by storage conditions. We recommend that this product be refrigerated after opening to maintain the best product quality.” If you’re wondering why restaurants and diners seem to keep open bottles of ketchup on their tables all day and night long, it’s basically just a facade—they’re dumping the bottle contents, whether they’re homemade ketchup or popular brands, into the trash each night. “We portion each order of ketchup that will be served that day,” explains chef Luke Venner of Elm Restaurant in New Canaan, Connecticut. “We always return the larger container immediately back to a refrigerator. Any unused portions are discarded at the end of the shift.” Verdict: You need to store open ketchup containers in the fridge, no ifs, ands, or burgers about it.

Jon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a 7-Eleven carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash. The Plano, Texas, detective, dressed in plain clothes but wearing his badge and gun, caught the man and pinned him to the hood of his car. But Hoffman had trouble containing the thief, and they got into a struggle. “The detective has a martial arts background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a martial arts background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,” a Plano police spokesperson said. The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching: Andre Harvey and Kirby Sample, two day laborers. Harvey did what has become common these days—he whipped out his phone and hit record. “I hate to say it, but my impulse was that this cop’s gonna do something stupid,” Harvey said. “But when he asked for help, I thought, Well, there’s not gonna be a shooting if I get over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action—while he was still recording the video—as did Sample. “Harvey grabbed the suspect’s arms, while Kirby grabbed his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs on,” said the police spokesperson. The 27-year-old suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than $50. “I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,” Harvey told WFAA. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.” After the arrest, the three men got to know each other over steaks and ribs at a local steak house—-Hoffman’s treat, as a thank-you. But the rescuers say Hoffman deserves credit too. “It could’ve turned real ugly,” Sample told KFOR.com. “He handled himself like a real professional.”
Each individual must take note of the 3 x 1/2 minutes. Why is it important? 3 x 1/2 minutes will greatly reduce the number of sudden deaths. Often this occurs, a person who still look healthy, has died in the night. Often we hear stories of people, yesterday I was chatting with him, why did he suddenly die? The reason is that when you wake up at night to go to the bathroom is often done in a rush. Immediately we stand, the brain lacks blood flow. Why "3 x 1/2 minute" is very important? In the middle of the night when you are awakened by the urge to urinate for example, ECG pattern can change. Because getting up suddenly, the brain will be anaemic and causes heart failure due to lack of blood. Advised to practice "3 1/2 minutes," which are: 1. When waking from sleep, lie in bed for the 1st 1/2 minute. 2. Sit in bed for the next 1/2 minute. 3. Lower your legs, sitting on the edge of the bed for the last half -minute. 4. After 3 x 1/2 minutes, you will not have anaemic brain and heart will not fail, reducing the possibility of a fall and sudden death. 5. It can occur regardless of age, young or old.
Helping your canine friend unwind begins with what you're listening to on the radio. BY LAUREN REARICK The next time your pup starts to pant and pace during a thunderstorm or you have to leave for a day and you know separation anxiety is about to ensue, consider turning on some music. But not just any music…according to a new study published in the journal of Physiology and Behavior, dogs prefer the sounds of reggae or soft rock more than any other genre. For the study, conducted by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), researchers with the University of Glasgow turned on six-hour playlists of five different genres of music for shelter dogs. During the duration of the study, the dogs heard classical, soft rock, reggae, pop and Motown. While the dogs were listening, researchers took note of their heart rate, cortisol levels and behaviors that measure stress levels, like barking or lying down. It turns out that dogs are fans of chilling out to Bob Marley, just like we do on our beach vacations, as results showed that dogs were less stressed while listening to soft rock or reggae. When listening to Motown, their stress levels were higher, study co-author Neil Evans said. “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed highlighting the possibility that like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences,” Evans said. “That being said, reggae music and soft rock showed the highest positive changes in behavior.” Based on the results of the study, Evans and his team believe that shelters and dog owners alike would benefit from playing reggae or soft rock music for their canines during high stress situations. For animals entering a shelter for the first time, the new surroundings can be scary, leading to barking, shaking or cowering, and dogs living in home can be fearful of loud noises or when their owners leave. Here are some ways to decipher if your pet is sick, instead of stressed. This latest research dates back to previous findings that discovered shelter dogs that listen to classical music were more relaxed, barking less and lying down more. Unfortunately, the study also found that by the seventh day of listening to classical music, the dogs returned to restlessness, leading researchers including Evans to believe that “the animals were getting habituated with the music, or possibly getting bored.” Those previous results are what led the researchers to try varied genres for the new study. Two Scottish SPCA shelters are taking note of the study and will begin playing music in their shelters, allowing their dogs to reap the relaxing benefits. While reggae and soft rock might be good for Fido, the study authors have yet to determine if felines enjoy the same sounds. In the meantime, you can brush up on what your cat is trying to tell you.
Besides being pretty unsexy, belly fat is also dangerous, raising the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. Here’s how to start losing belly fat fast. BY SUSAN PATTERSON BY CUTTING OUT SUGAR Eating sugar, especially refined sugars added to sweeten food and beverages, is a leading contributing factor to visceral fat. The glucose and fructose that come from sugar are simple carbohydrates that get quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolized to release energy. When there’s excess intake, they get converted to glycogen to be stored in fat tissue. Eating a lot of sugar also spikes your blood sugar, which triggers insulin to be released in large amounts, potentially leading to a condition called insulin resistance that’s associated with metabolic syndrome. Cutting out all sweetened foods and drinks, including fruit juices, is one of the best things you can do today to lose belly fat fast. Learn to enjoy small amounts of natural sweeteners such as fresh fruit, raw honey, dates, and coconut crystals. BY EATING MORE PROTEIN Protein is one macronutrient that can really help fight belly fat. When you eat more protein, it keeps you fuller longer and reduces the hunger hormone ghrelin, helping you slash the total calories you consume in a day. High-protein meals, with 20 to 30 grams of protein each, can also help you burn more calories by raising the body’s metabolic rate. Eat up to three protein-rich meals a day to keep your appetite and cravings in check. Good sources of protein include poultry, lean meat, eggs, fresh-caught fish and other seafood, cottage cheese, and yogurt. Include one or more of these in every meal. BY ADDING MORE FIBER Getting more fiber into your diet, especially soluble fiber found in oats, chia seeds, legumes, vegetables, and fruits, can help reduce fat accumulation in the abdominal area. Psyllium husk is another great source of fiber—and has zero calories. Fiber swells up with water, increasing the bulk of your stomach contents and giving you a feeling of fullness. It also reduces fat absorption from food by binding with bile acids required for the digestion of dietary fats. Fiber can also bind with sugars and other carbohydrates, delaying or reducing their absorption into the bloodstream. BY DRINKING TEA Drinking several cups of tea a day can help shrink your belly fat. Green tea is a great choice, but tea made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, such as oolong tea and the unfermented white tea, are just as effective. Catechins in the tea speed up metabolism and increase fat burning by stimulating the liver, especially when combined with exercise. Other fat-burning teas are peppermint tea, which is known for its appetite suppressing effect, and Red Rooibos tea, which has a flavonoid called Aspalathin that lowers the kind of stress hormones that promote weight gain. BY GETTING OFF THE COUCH Being sedentary is a major risk factor of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes. But every type of movement is helpful— even small gestures we make throughout the day, like tapping our toes or pacing while talking on the phone. These moves, known as non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT, can constitute as much as 50 percent of the total energy expenditure of a person who keeps busy throughout the day. Simple things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator and taking a brisk walk on your lunch hour can help sizzle calories and reduce fat. BY CALMING THE MIND Yoga and meditation can aid fat loss, but not so much from the physical effect of the movements as from their calming and relaxing effect. Several studies have linked high levels of the stress hormone cortisol to weight gain, particularly in the belly area. Practice yoga for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day for best results or start a daily meditation practice. WITH REGULAR WORKOUTS Regular exercise is key to weight loss and maintenance. And since there’s no consensus on whether the ideal workout is aerobic or resistance training, your best bet is to do a little of both. Resistance training is especially important for people over 30, who will otherwise begin to lose bone density. Contrary to popular belief, abdominal crunches are not going to melt away belly fat, though they will help build muscle that could help define the area. And since muscle mass has a higher resting metabolic rate and energy expenditure than fat, it could help you trim down. BY AVOIDING ALCOHOL It’s called a beer belly for a reason! Alcohol consumption has long been associated with abdominal obesity and can easily derail your fat-loss efforts. Alcohol is not only high in calories, but it’s the body’s preferred fuel, so when you drink it, the other macronutrients in your food will be sent into storage (aka your belly, or possibly your thighs or butt). Alcohol is also notorious for lowering your self-control and inhibitions, so you can easily end up eating and drinking too much. BY GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP When you understand how lack of sleep contributes to obesity, you’ll realize how important it is to get good sleep every night. Sleep regulates endocrine function, maintaining the right balance between the hunger hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone leptin. Sleep deprivation increases appetite, insulin resistance, and the stress hormone cortisol, all of which contribute to fat accumulation in the body. Make sure that you get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Have trouble drifting off or keep waking up?

WHY WASTE WATER…... World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home, spending countless hours queuing or trekking to distant sources, and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water. This year's theme: Why waste water? in support of SDG 6.3 on improving water quality and reducing, treating and reusing wastewater. Globally, the vast majority of all the wastewater from our homes, cities, industry and agriculture flows back to nature without being treated or reused – polluting drinking and bathing and irrigation and losing valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials. Reducing and safely treating and reusing wastewater, for example in agriculture and aquaculture, protects worker, farmers and consumers promotes food security, health and wellbeing.

Beverage company Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria has broken the Guinness World Records title for the Largest glass bottle mosaic. Creating an image almost ten times larger than the previous record holder, the mosaic was made using a staggering 72,933 empty Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero and Schweppes Soda glass bottles. The resulting mosaic had a total surface area of 250 square metres. The record attempt took place at the company’s annual sales conference in Kamchia, Bulgaria, with official Guinness World Records adjudicator Glenn Pollard on hand to officiate. A total of 545 Coca-Cola employees worked together for over two hours to create the giant image of the iconic Coca-Cola bottle which featured the word ‘BULGARIA’ down the middle. Svetoslav Atanasov, General Manager of Coca-Cola HBC Bulgaria, commented on the accomplishment: “Achieving a Guinness World Records title is an impressive event by itself, but what adds an even bigger value to it is the community element. I’m happy to see our employees working together to support the young people and the local community of Varna.” As well as setting a Guinness World Records title, those involved in the attempt also raised funds for the Varna – European Youth Capital initiative, which focuses on promoting social innovation and entrepreneurship in young adults. Previously the largest glass bottle mosaic consisted of 7,420 bottles and was achieved by HOMEX Co., Ltd. (Japan) at Toyota Ecoful Town, in Toyota, Aichi, Japan, on 31 August 2014.

BY LONELY PLANET THEFT Theft isn’t rife in Namibia, but Windhoek, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Tsumeb and Grootfontein have problems with petty theft and muggings, so it’s sensible to conceal your valuables, not leave anything in your car and avoid walking alone at night. It’s also prudent to avoid walking around cities and towns bedecked in expensive jewellery, watches and cameras. Most hotels provide a safe or secure place for valuables, although you should be cautious of the security at some budget places. Never leave a safari-packed vehicle anywhere in Windhoek or Swakopmund, other than in a guarded car park or private parking lot. Theft from campsites can also be a problem, particularly near urban areas. Locking up your tent may help, but anything left unattended is still at risk.
