The name 'LEGO' is an abbreviation of the two Danish words "leg godt", meaning "play well". It’s their name and it’s their ideal. The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. The company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a grandchild of the founder. It has come a long way over the past almost 80 years - from a small carpenter’s workshop to a modern, global enterprise that is now one of the world’s largest manufacturers of toys. The LEGO brick is our most important product. We are proud to have been named “Toy of the Century” twice. Our products have undergone extensive development over the years – but the foundation remains the traditional LEGO brick. The brick in its present form was launched in 1958. The interlocking principle with its tubes makes it unique and offers unlimited building possibilities. It's just a matter of getting the imagination going – and letting a wealth of creative ideas emerge through play.

Rosh Pinah ("corener stone" in Hebrew), is a small mining settlement located in southern Namibia near Orange River, close to the border of South Africa. This southern part of Namibia is known as the Karas Region. West of the town lies Diamond Area 1, the main diamond mining area of Namibia. Rosh Pinah belongs to the Oranjemund electoral constituency. The town is connected via road to Aus. Rosh Pinah is located less than 160 km north-west of the Noordoewer border post. Mining operations started in Rosh Pinah in 1969 when the Rosh Pinah Lead-Zinc Mine commenced operations. The mineralization in the area was first discovered by geologist Michael McMillan in 1963. The Israeli-sounding name of this remote mining village was bestowed by a German Jew, Moses Eli Kahan, who discovered copper here after WWI. With the drop in copper prices in the early 1930s, the mining was abandoned, but in the late 1960s, the mining indefatigable Moses, now in this 80s, discovered veins of lead-zinc in the mountains. A South African zincmining firm still extracts up to 75,000 tones of ore annually at Skorpion Mine. To get to Rosh Pinah, take the C13 from Aus or tackle the rough but scenic 150 km Orange River road route from Noordoewer. In 2001 Rosh Pinah received another economic boost when Anglo American started their Skorpion Zinc mining operations. The town has steadily grown in size over the past decade and the two zinc mines still create much of the economic activity and resultantly the income of the town. Although Rosh Pinah does have town status plans in place to accomplish this soon. You can expect to be welcomed and treated with friendliness by the people who live and work in this harsh desert environment. The surroundings of Rosh Pinah offer spectacular rugged mountains and desert scenery. The unspoiled beautiful landscape of Huns Mountains is a great way to get away from it all, relax and enjoy the tranquility.

HOE JAMMER IS DIT DAT DIERE KORTER LEWE AS MENSE Skrywer onbekend ‘n Sesjarige se antwoord hierop het my verstom. Gee liefde vryelik. Gee werklik om. Praat vriendelik.

MOSTERDRING RESEP BESTANDDELE: 4 eiers 250 ml water 125 ml bruin asyn 175 ml (150 g) wit suiker 15 ml gelatien 15 ml mosterdpoeier 2 ml borrie 1 ml sout 250 ml room

Does soap meant for breaking up bacon grease and washing off that sticky peanut butter harm your delicate hands? Read on. BY RACHEL SOKOL

You’re at the kitchen sink and need to wash your hands after slicing an onion or wiping yet another epic sneeze off your toddler’s face. But the only soap sink side is the same dish soap you use to clean your dishes. Which poses the question: Is it OK to wash your hands with dishwashing liquid? Or, should you only wash your hands with designated body soap; either bar or liquid? Here’s the answer according to Kally Papantoniou, MD, a New York City and Long Island-based dermatologist. Just because a soap is advertised to predominantly wash dishes, doesn’t mean it can’t clean your hands, says Dr. Papantoniou. The good news: Regular washing with a dishwashing liquid should adequately remove the majority of bacteria. But there are a few buts: 

When reading labels on dishwashing liquid, remember this: It’s hard to clean grease off plates without cleaning the natural oils right off your hands, explains Dr. Papantoniou. If you regularly find yourself washing your hands with dish soap, opt for a “milder” dishwashing liquid, which will be less drying on hands, she says. Have dry skin or eczema? You’ll need to be even more cautious about stripping natural oils for your skin. If you’re having a flare-up, you may want to seek out a gentler hand soap.

While it is OK to wash your hands with dishwashing soap, that doesn’t mean you can go hog wild and use it in place of your shower gel. “Using dish soap on the rest of your body will likely be too harsh and drying on more delicate skin,” says Dr. Papantoniou.

Laat stol in yskas.

When you do go to buy that hand soap, Dr. Papantoniou recommends steering clear of antibacterial hand soap. “Toxic chemicals may be present in those soaps and could pose potential health risks, and second, a balance of bacteria on our skin is actually beneficial and should be promoted.” Her choice for those with eczema or dry skin is Vanicream Cleansing Bar or the Cetaphil skin cleansers. “For sensitive skin patients, I recommend the use of these milder cleansers to spare skin from being dried out.”

After their newborn was diagnosed with a devastating condition, this family knew they had two choices: They could let the despair rule their life—or find joy. BY MARISSA LALIBERTE Until Tracy Umezu went into preterm labor at 35 weeks, the Minnesota mom and her husband didn’t know their second daughter would have any medical issues. But after an emergency C-section, baby Charlotte was born in critical condition. Umezu saw her daughter for just three minutes before the newborn was whisked away to a higher-level hospital. It would be a full 24 hours before Umezu and her husband would see their baby again. “All that joy you have when you think you’re having a healthy baby was swept out under our feet,” says Umezu. After weeks of testing, doctors realized Charlotte was having 400 seizures a day. Three months later, the diagnosis came. Charlotte had severe SCN2A, a condition in which the brain can’t use sodium appropriately. Through the chaos, the family realized it was easy to see heartbreak, but looking for joy could keep their spirits up. Umezu and her husband had no idea how long they’d have with their youngest daughter, so they started Seize Your Joy to fill her life with as much happiness as possible in the time she had to live. Checking items off a “joy list”—a term the parents preferred to “bucket list”—Charlotte had the chance to finish a marathon (Umezu pushed the stroller), go kayaking, play on Hawaiian beaches, and more. “We wanted Charlotte to experience as much as she possibly could and didn’t want her to have any limitations,” says Umezu. “A lot of families wouldn’t have taken Charlotte to Hawaii, but we did. It was an amazing trip, and we didn’t want her seizures to define her. That’s who she was—she seized—so we didn’t let that stop us from living life with her.” The family also found surprising joys in the little things that weren’t on the list. For instance, when Charlotte moved from a crib to a big bed, Umezu could finally lie down with her daughter at the hospital. “Joy comes in many forms,” says Umezu. “Even when times are as bad as they can be, you can still find joy in little things, and they keep you going.” She also finds happiness by spreading the feeling, like by paying for coffee for others. Charlotte passed away on November 29, 2016, but even through despair, her family is devoted to Seize Your Joy. Marking the anniversary of Charlotte’s death, the family will “do a different joy” every month, says Umezu. They’ve taped dollar bills around Target with cards sharing Charlotte’s story, and collected toys for underprivileged children. “It’s kind of become a movement,” says Umezu. “Joy has become [Charlotte’s] legacy. We’ve worked very hard to spread joy in her passing.” Umezu and her husband hope to turn Seize Your Joy into a nonprofit as they continue spreading happiness. One of their initiatives is giving out “joy boxes” to children in hospitals and families of parents with cancer. The joy boxes for children include toys tailored to kids—like musical toys for a boy with poor eyesight—along with comfy sheets to make hospital beds feel homier. Little girls usually receive legwarmers, big bows, and nail polish like Charlotte used to wear. “The focus on Charlotte shows that she was a person and not a disease. We loved when the team would come in and comment on her outfit,” says Umezu. “We always had Charlotte’s fingers and toes painted. Even to a baby, it makes them feel more human and pretty in the hospital.”

No, it’s not just to confuse you.

We bet you already have the secret ingredient on hand.

Any experienced online dater knows that looks can be deceiving. Someone may look like a catch from the profile pictures, but once you meet in person and his or her mouth opens, you get a completely different impression. Well, the English language isn’t so different. Some words don’t sound anything at all like what they look like written out: thought, phlegm, pneumonia, basically anything with silent letters.

Oils splatter from your food when you bake, leaving your oven door covered in caked-on grease. The self-cleaning setting won’t do much to help a glass door— and could damage your oven—so it’s up to you to do the dirty work. Unfortunately, that baked-on mess can be awfully stubborn.

But “colonel” is a different story. The “l” isn’t silent; it just sounds like an “r.” The origin of this strange pronunciation starts in the Middle Ages Italy, where a military officer was called “colonello.” Then, the French borrowed that word and changed it to “coronel” through a process called dissimilation. That’s when one sound appears twice in a word, and one of the instances of that sound changes into a similar sound. For “colonello,” the first “l” got changed to the neighboring sound “r.”

But there is an easier way. In a post that’s been pinned more than 850,000 times on Pinterest, DIY Home Sweet Home reveals how to make those grease splatters disappear. No need to splurge on expensive cleaning products either. You probably already have the secret ingredient in your cupboard: baking soda. Mix the baking soda with just enough water to make a paste, then coat the inside of your oven door with it. After the mixture sits for 15 to 30 minutes to work its magic, the gunk should wipe right off—easy as that. Imagine how much more pleasant cooking and baking will be when you don’t have to stare at that baked-on grease anymore.

Think “l” and “r” don’t have similar sounds? Here’s your linguistics lesson for the day: Make the “r” sound, then put your tongue on the roof of your mouth. We use the same parts of the mouth to make those two sounds. By the 1500s, the English were adding French military terms to their own grammatical arsenal, words like “cavalerie,” “canon,” “infanterie,” and yes, “coronel.” Later that century, English scholars translating Italian military documents came across “colonello.” Influenced by that original word, they changed “coronel” to “colonel.” Just one problem—People were still used to saying “coronel.” So while the spelling changed, the pronunciation stayed the same. Like many English words, over time it got contracted to the misleading word we know today as “kur-nel.”

Jeans a little tighter than usual? Your morning coffee might be to blame. BY AUBREY ALMANZA If you depend on coffee to wake you up in the morning or keep you going throughout the day, don’t worry, you’re definitely not alone. A recent study conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that more than 160 million people drink coffee on a regular basis—and most don’t take it black. Instead, roughly two-thirds add cream, sugar, or other flavorings to their coffee without considering the possible health impact. But come on, a dash of cream never hurt anyone, right? Wrong. “These add-in items are often dense in energy and fat but low in nutritional value,” says Ruopeng An, the University of Illinois Kinesiology and Community Health professor who conducted the study. If you take your coffee black, you don’t have much to worry about in terms of calorie intake. But if you enjoy sprucing up your coffee with a bit of sweetness (and we can’t exactly blame you), you’re likely consuming an extra 69 unnecessary calories each time. “More than 60 percent of those calories come from sugar, with fat accounting for most of the rest of the extra calories consumed,” Dr. An found. That’s right, you’re actually drinking calories from sugar and fat in your morning coffee. “These daily intakes may seem small, but the extra calories every day can add up to extra pounds,” Dr. An says. This is particularly true for anyone who drinks multiple cups per day, most (if not all) days of the week. If you absolutely must sweeten your coffee, one of the best natural sweeteners you can use is a powder or liquid made from the green, leafy Stevia plant. This sweetener doesn’t just add sugar-like sweetness (it’s actually 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar), it also miraculously offers numerous health benefits, including lowering high cholesterol, potentially preventing heart disease, and having anti-inflammatory properties. The good news: Once you’ve switched to a zero calorie sweetener like Stevia, you can use your leftover calorie budget to eat a banana (89 calories), a 100calorie pack of snack pack, or a handful of pistachio nuts (83 calories). Unlike artificial sweeteners and creamers that leave you drinking on the pounds, these snacks are calories that are worth it.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their nonessential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. towards the end of March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. It was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide. Today, Earth Hour engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues. The one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movements.

The position of a car's fuel door (if you can actually remember where it is) remains one of the greatest unsolved motoring mysteries. Do car company engineers draw straws to decide what side of the car the fuel door goes on? No—but they might as well. If you’ve ever been stuck in a long line for fuel and spent the time wondering why your fuel door is on the left (or right), don’t expect a succinct answer. According to Ford spokesman Mark Schirmer, as reported on theAllstateBlog, engineers are free to place fuel doors on the side of the car that offers the easiest packaging. And while one on each side would be rather convenient, we’re not likely to see dual fuel doors anytime soon—there’s neither the room nor the demand for them. “The placement of the fuel door is mainly a factor of fuel tank design, location, and underbody packaging,” Nissan’s Steve Yaeger told theAllstateBlog. “With all of the structure and components located underneath the vehicle, (engineers) would quickly encounter restrictions in trying to route the filler tube to the same side on every vehicle.” Schirmer says Americans prefer fuel doors on the left side of their cars, probably because it makes it easier for them to place their car’s left fender close to the fuel pump. For this reason, it’s possible that drivers in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, India, and other countries who drive on the left side of the road favor a right-hand-side fuel door. But there’s nothing to confirm that driver preference is a factor. There are regulations about where the fuel door should be positioned, but these don’t specify the right or left side of the car. (Current regulations regarding car fuel systems demand the filler be at the widest part of a car, inboard of any crumple zones, and safe from dripping onto any hot exhaust bits or electrical wiring.) Robert Frank, writing for PBS Newshour, puts forward the “equilibrium” arguments, suggesting that if all cars had fuel doors on the same side, 50 percent of the pumps in the fuel station would be unused, and we’d all spend even more of our time waiting in line to get fuel. (Good point!) Oh, and if you can’t remember the location of your fuel door (and if we’re completely honest, most of us will have to take a second and think about that before we answer), simply look at the little diamond-shaped arrow on the fuel gauge on your dashboard—it points to the side of the car where the fuel door is. Do it before you pull up to the pump, to avoid the embarrassment of having to get back into your car and drive to another pump.

BY LONELY PLANET VEGETATION An unusual natural hazard is the euphorbia plant. Its dried branches should never be used in fires as they release a deadly toxin when burnt. It can be fatal to inhale the smoke or eat food cooked on a fire containing it. If you’re in doubt about any wood you’ve collected, leave it out of the fire. Caretakers at campsites do a good job of removing these plants from around pitches and fire pits, so you needn’t worry excessively. As a precaution, try to only use bundles of wood that you’ve purchased in a store to start fires. If you’re bush camping, best to familiarise yourself with the plant’s appearance. There are several members of the family, and you can check out their pictures either online or at the tourist information centres
