Derek, who the Birmingham Mail interviewed back in July, has just appeared in a video for the charity Independent Age . The organisation supports the elderly in maintaining as much independence as possible as they enter their twilight years. Derek is still working at an age where most have retired. Testament, then, to the fact that no matter how old you are, you can still stay fresh. While times have changed, Derek is still trundling along in his 15 mph milk van. He thinks he's got a fair few miles left. Though isn't a big fan of supermarkets. “I hope we’ll be around to serve people for a long time but it is a constant competition with supermarkets nowadays," Derek said. “Think how much plastic is wasted with milk cartons people buy now. It’s terrible.” Derek pointed out that you can reuse milk bottles again and again. In 1980, nearly 90 per cent of household milk was delivered in the traditional way. Alas, no longer. But milkmen still provide an invaluable service for housebound people and some in cut-off rural areas. He said: “I certainly won’t be hanging up the coat. I’m a workaholic now, and I’ll be working for 10 more years. “I love it and I’ll carry on for as long as I can. “I’m quite fit for an 88-year-old, I must admit. "And my wife Betty feeds me well. We've been together more than 66 years." Derek still drives the same milk float as in the 1950s. He supplies more than 300 homes with fresh milk every day.

If you're browsing your Instagram feed this month, you might stumble across a few photographs of men showing off one painted fingernail. At first glance, you might assume it's a bizarre new trend inspired by the likes of Justin Bieber, and picked up by men who like a quirky social media selfie. Celebrities have been taking part, but the reason behind it is actually much more important. The whole idea is to raise awareness of physical and sexual violence against children and to encourage donations to support victims. It's estimated that one in five children experience physical and/or sexual violence before the age of 18. Australian organisation ygap came up with the initiative, asking men to paint one fingernail throughout the month of October in an attempt to spark up conversation around the topic. "That nail leads to a conversation. that conversation inspires a donation. That donation allows for awareness, prevention and protection. "And it ends with a world where no child suffers from violence."

Dear friends, donors and sponsors, With this letter we would like to thank each and every one of you once again for your kind and compassionate support. Only with all of your wonderful assistance can Mariana receive both her 2 artificial corneal transplants in the USA. Her first eye operation was done on 20 September 2016 and was a success: Mariana can see with her right eye already ! J The surgeon, Dr Aquavella, is very satisfied with the outcome of the complicated Keratoprosthesis surgery on the right eye. Mariana’s parents, family and all others involved are very grateful for such a magical outcome. Attached please find some photos of our “Namibia Miracle Child”… Thanks to the many, many generous donations and the extraordinary contribution by Mariana's medical aid, we have achieved the fundraising target of N$1,5million for the operation and all related costs and we could already transfer US$80,000 – the minimum estimated cost for both eyes ! The Flaum Eye Institute also gave a significant discount on the invoice of the first eye operation, which is greatly appreciated. This support from all around the world is really incredible and heartwarming to experience. The second eye operation on Tuesday 11th October 2016 was also successful. Thank you for everyone’s hope, prayer and positive thoughts: for baby Mariana to cope well after the operations. We are also thinking of Mariana’s parents, her big brother Matthew (only 6 years old) who stayed behind in Namibia and her grandparents and extended family. After the operation on Tuesday, Mariana and her parents will stay in Rochester for another 3 weeks, so that the surgeon and his team can monitor Mariana’s progress. The family will return to Namibia beginning of November 2016. Mariana’s parents wish to sincerely thank Mariana’s medical aid without whose contribution it would not have been possible to cover the enormous costs involved; Lezanne & Kato Maartens for organizing the successful “Dance & Auction for Mariana Grobler”; The Wilku Trust for a huge donation; Motor Vehicle Accident Fund; H.O.G. Namibia Chapter #7968 and ALL other donors who paid into the Etzold-Duvenhage Trust account, the account of “Namibia Miracle Child” and the Delport-Nederlof Trust account; as well as all loyal supporters of Okanti Foundation, by supporting Namibia Runs for Charity 2016. We also sincerely thank Pupkewitz Foundation & Trip Travel for their kind sponsorship of all flight tickets. Special thanks go to Dr Aquavella and his team at the Flaum Eye Institute for the exceptional care Mariana receives there; to the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester for the caring accommodation environment; to Todd Miedema for his support and fundraising campaign in the USA as well as to E-Bank and Thomas Cook for all the professional support in banking matters. As with all chronic diseases, medical treatments and related costs never end. So far, we anticipate medical costs of minimum N$100,000 for the next 12 months: for expensive, specially-mixed eye drops, specialist consultations in Namibia as well as flights for a follow-up consultation visit to the Flaum Eye Institute in Rochester in 2017. Any donations towards future medical treatments for Mariana will be highly appreciated. Donations specifically marked for “Mariana” will be reserved for her medical care only. ©Oswald 2016

Vegatiewe voortplanting is ’n proses waarin een individu per ongeluk ‘n ander individu vervaardig waarop net die ouma trots is. Hoe het berge ontstaan? – Deur baie sterk winde. Waarom moet rekenaargebruikers gereeld rugsteunkopiee maak? – Sodat hulle nie rugpyn kry nie.

The most roof tiles broken in one minute (female) is 923 and was achieved by Lisa Dennis (UK) on the set of 'Lo Show dei Record' in Milan, Italy, on 11 July 2014. The tiles were arranged in stacks of 10 tiles. Lisa began the attempt smashing two stacks of tiles at a time; one with each hand. She then alternated to one stack at a time with one hand. Only 2 tiles from the stack she hit during the one minute time period did not break.

YOUR CHILD CAN TRANSFORM A PHOTOGRAPH INTO AN ALL-NATURAL WORK OF ART 1. 2. 3. 4.

Take a full-body photo of your child in front of a fairly plain background. Print out the photo as large as you can. With your child, collect natural items from your yard, such as bark, leaves, twigs, and flowers. Arrange the objects on the photo. There's no need to glue them.

Goeie padmaniere is belangrik. Baie ongelukke word veroorsaak deur voetgangers wat nie padreëls gehoorsaam nie of bloot net agterlosig is. Moet nooit in of naby ‘n pad speletjies (veral balspeletjies) speel nie.

NAMIBIA NOTES 

Shark Island is a small peninsula adjacent to the coastal city of Lüderitz in Namibia. Its area is about 40 hectares. Formerly an island, it became a peninsula from 1906 on by the creation of a wide land connection that doubled its former size.

 

Official motorcades can be expected anywhere in Namibia, and are normally easily identified by the outriders on motorcycles, flashing blue lights and sirens. These motorcades mostly travel at excessive speed Take note that by law you are prohibited from overtaking an official motorcade, regardless of the speed at which it may be travelling. It is further required of all vehicular traffic (both directions) to stop off the road surface when a motorcade approaches from the front or rear. Roadblocks should be considered part of the Namibian scenery and, as a rule, do not cause too much of a delay. Do yourself a favour and approach these little hassles with a sense of humour — it is no fun to fall foul of the law in Namibia.
