“Fantasmagorie“ is a French animation film by Émile Cohl created in 1908. It is considered to be the first animated cartoon. Read more about this animated cartoon. Émil Cohl was a French graphic artist and the first cartoon filmmaker in Europe. In 1908, he joined the Gaumont film company as a writer, but then moved to making animated films. Cohl made a lot of films (over 250), using drawings, cut-outs, puppets and more. Cohls film "Fantasmagorie“ (phantasmagoria in English) is likely the first all-animated film in history. Fantasmagorie is a French word, defined as "a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imaged“. He worked on this film for about 5 months. Cohl had drawn each frame on paper which he shot onto negative film. For this film, which takes about a minute and 20 seconds, he had to draw about 700 pictures which he photo-

graphed later. The colors in the negatives weren’t inverted on the film so it looks like chalk on a blackboard although it was originally drawn with a black pen on white paper. The film has no real story or structure. You can see different scenes which are morphing into other different images. In the first scene, a hand is drawing a little clown which doubles as a chubby guy who falls into a chair in a theater. There are more of these crazy metamorphoses.

I worked lots of extra hours my first Christmas season as a clerk for Dancer’s, the department store in my small hometown of Wayland, Michigan. I’d started the job, which paid 85 cents an hour, that summer of 1966 after getting a work permit at age 15. Our neighbor Arnie Wilde was the manager, and I soon learned how to fit shoes, measure and cut cloth, and keep the shelves of shirts and underwear nice and neat. We closed at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and at 5:55 a local farmer came in to find gifts for his wife. Arnie told me this was a holiday habit of Mr. Johnson’s, and that we’d do our best to take care of him. I knew Mr. Johnson, whose daughter was in my class and in the band, so I went to help him. We wandered through the sweaters, dresses and skirts, the pretty towels and practical flannel nightgowns. We talked about size and color and what I thought Mrs. Johnson would like. After nearly half an hour of mulling, Mr. Johnson decided on a flannel nightgown with pretty pink fuzzy slippers to match and a piece of jewelry that I’d pointed out to him. I wrapped his gifts and completed the sale, and Arnie and I walked home for dinner. The next Christmas Eve, like clockwork, Mr. Johnson came in at 5:55. We went through the same process, taking lots of time again to choose and wrap gifts. Tired but happy, Arnie and I headed for home. By my third Christmas at Dancer’s, I was an experienced salesclerk. Mrs. Johnson had come into the store in late summer to buy school clothes for the kids, and we visited while I helped her shop. As she commented on pretty colors and the lovely way a dress was made, I made mental notes. When Mr. Johnson made his last-minute appearance on Christmas Eve, I was ready. I told him, “Mrs. Johnson was in not too long ago, and I noticed how much she liked this royal blue sweater and the plaid skirt that goes with it so beautifully.” She’d also told me that she really needed new boots, confiding that she was ashamed to walk into church with her old ones. I’d found some perfect boots in her size and had put them aside for Christmas Eve. Well, Mr. Johnson was impressed, and I think more than a little relieved. We had him out the door by 6:10 with everything wrapped in paper and ribbons! I worked for Arnie three more holiday seasons and was always there just before closing on Christmas Eve, when Mr. Johnson knew I had the answers he needed. The big stores in Grand Rapids had more merchandise and lovely Christmas fantasies in their windows, but it’s only in a small town that neighbors take care of neighbors.

The doll had an audio recording inside: "Hey buddy, it's Dada. I miss you and I love you." JBY ULIANA LABIANCA Kim Lane was working behind the counter at a truck stop in Farina, Illinois, when a customer brought her a lost doll that had been left at one of the station’s gas pumps. One look at the toy—a plush squeeze doll wearing camo and emblazoned with the photo of a soldier—was all it took for Kim to realize the forgotten doll was special. “I just knew that it had something to do with military personnel,” Kim told local news channel KSDK. “I just wanted to find the person that lost it.” When she squeezed the doll, her mission became even more inspired. “Hey buddy, it’s Dada. I miss you and I love you,” it said. Many military parents create similar comforting keepsakes before deploying abroad. The personalized dolls often include an audio box with a recording of the soldier’s voice. Re-invigorated in her search, Kim took to social media, posting a status about the doll and asking friends for information. The Internet responded accordingly. “It was nonstop,” Kim says. “Every time I looked at my phone there were more shares, more likes more comments.” And finally, after more than 1,000 shares, a breakthrough. The grandmother of the little boy who owned the doll—a two-year-old named Grayson whose soldier father was deployed—sent Kim a message. The doll went home—along with a few treats from the truck stop’s shelves. “With everything going on in the world right now it feels great that so many people are standing behind my husband and military people in general because they don’t really personally know him,” Grayson’s mom, Ashley, told KSDK. “It’s amazing to see social media and the world come together for something seemingly so small.”

Professional stuntman Amadei Weiland from Germany and freerunner David Fanelli from Italy attempt to set a new record for the Highest wallassisted backflip. They both experience falls, but the parkour fans are determined to persevere and take home the title. The official Guinness World Records rules for this challenge state that the backflip must be made over a bar, without touching the back or knocking it off its hinges. Both challengers increased the height from the previous record (Amadei’s own record of 2.70 metres) and were given three attempts at each level. Amadei and David both managed to complete an incredible 3.40 metres high backflip by running up the wall, kicking off and landing feet first. However, their record was recently broken by Li Xingnan from China on the set of CCTV - Guinness World Records Special in Beijing with a staggering 3.70 metres wall-assisted backflip. The Highest standing backflip is 1.38 m and was achieved by Tyson Edwards (Australia) in Green Point, New South Wales, Australia, on 5 January 2014.

JANUARY Named after the Roman god of beginnings and endings Janus (the month Januarius). FEBRUARY The name comes either from the old-Italian god Februus or else from februa, signifying the festivals of purification celebrated in Rome during this month. MARCH This is the first month of the Roman year. It is named after the Roman god of war, Mars. APRIL Called Aprilis, from aperire, "to open". Possible because it is the month in which the buds begin to open. MAY The third month of the Roman calendar. The name probably comes from Maiesta, the Roman goddess of honor and reverence. JUNE The fourth month was named in honor of Juno. However, the name might also come from iuniores (young men; juniors) as opposed to maiores (grown men; majors) for May, the two months being dedicated to young and old men. JULY It was the month in which Julius Caesar was born, and named Julius in his honor in 44 BCE, the year of his assassination. Also called Quintilis (fifth month). AUGUST Originally this month was called Sextilis (from sextus, "six"), but the name was later changed in honor of the first of the Roman emperors, Augustus (because several fortunate events of his life occurred during this month). SEPTEMBER The name comes from septem, "seven". OCTOBER The name comes from octo, "eight" NOVEMBER The name comes from novem, "nine". DECEMBER The name comes from decem, "ten".

Humans: still the world’s deadliest predator. FIONA MACDONALD According to media reports, at least 12 people have been killed in selfie-related incidents so far last year and many more injured, while only eight have died as a result of shark attacks. The latest selfie-related death was of a 66-year-old Japanese tourist, who reportedly suffered a heart attack while posing with a selfie stick at the Taj Mahal in India. Other deaths have been caused by distracted photo-takers falling off cliffs, crashing their cars, being hit by trains, and even shooting themselves while posing with guns. In fact, the selfie craze has proven so dangerous that officials in Australia had to fence off a 16-storey high rock that looks like a wedding cake because people wouldn't stop taking photos on it, despite fears it could collapse at any time. Russia has also experienced its share of accidents: two men in the Urals were killed while taking a selfie of themselves holding a hand grenade with the pin pulled out (the photo survived as proof), and a teenager died in May while climbing onto a railway bridge to take a photo. The incidents have caused the Russian government to launch a campaign to warn people about the dangers of selfies So what is it that makes selfie-takers so likely to put themselves in danger? Research published by Ohio State University last year found that men who post a lot of selfies score higher in traits of narcissism and psychopathy in online tests. While all the participants were still in the healthy range, this suggests that they may be more inclined to focus on personal gain in situations, rather than potential danger. "It's all about me. It's putting me in the frame. I'm getting attention and when I post that to social media, I'm getting the confirmation that I need from other people that I'm awesome," lead researcher Jesse Fox told Reuters. "You don't care about the tourist attraction you're destroying; you don't care about annoying people in your social media feed ... you're not even thinking about the consequences of your actions, so who cares if you're dangling off the side of the Eiffel Tower?"

The best smartphone in the world right now Update: Despite the death of the Note 7, the 'Always On Display' features are making their way to the Galaxy S7 Edge and S7. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is a phone I'd hate to have had to make. Its predecessor was a multi-award-winning phone, simply because it packed all the power of the 'normal' Galaxy S6 and yet... that curved edge. I wasn't alone in loving it, whipping it out proudly whenever possible. But that was last year, and the world is bored of the curved design. We've seen it. It's been done. So what can Samsung do to make the new phone a real step forward?

Well, unlike what it's done on the Galaxy S7, which looks (initially) like last year's model, the changes on the S7 Edge are brilliant, adding a zest to a design that could have quickly become tired. The screen is larger, yet somehow the phone doesn't feel too much bigger in the hand. The rear of the phone is now curved too, making it sit nicely in the hand. It's waterproof. There's a microSD card slot. There's so much power in there I'm pretty sure I could strap it on the back of a speedboat and make my way across the Atlantic. And that's even more possible because the battery – such a disappointment on last year's S6 phones – is boosted massively too, giving us a handset that's able to last over 24 hours between charges.
