IT’S been called the greatest development in the history of merchandising, but when the shopping trolley was first invented it was a spectacular flop If there’s one invention that demonstrates just how far technology has come in the past 80 years it might be the humble shopping trolley. It seems so simple, and certainly something we all take for granted when it’s time to load up on groceries each week, but it hasn’t always been so easy. Once upon a time shoppers had to struggle with the limitations of wicker or wire baskets. That is, until in 1937 the owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain in Oklahoma came up with what at the time was a revolutionary idea: put a much bigger basket on wheels to allow people to keep shopping. It was an idea that would end up netting Sylvan Goldman his impressive fortune and was later hailed as a piece of innovation that drove the force of American capitalism. In a TV documentary about the life of Goldman, his shopping trolley was called the “greatest development in the history of merchandising.” But it didn’t catch on right away. Men thought they were effeminate and women were reminded of pushing baby strollers — a task they had apparently had enough of. Seeking to sway public opinion the 39-year-old inventor took out a number of newspaper ads to promote the new grocery store feature. “It’s new — It’s sensational. No more baskets to carry!” read one. “Can you imagine winding your way through a spacious food market without having to carry a cumbersome shopping basket on your arm?” read another. However they proved ineffective. In a 1977 interview with CBS, Goldman recalled the difficulty he had in getting the American public to embrace his invention. “The housewife’s, most of them decided, ‘no more carts for me. I have been pushing enough baby carriages. I don’t want to push anymore’,” he said. “And the men would say, ‘you mean with my big strong arms I can’t carry a darn little basket like that?’ And he wouldn’t touch it. It was a complete flop.” Despite the grocery shopping Luddites, Goldman persisted and hired attractive men and women to walk around his stores pushing the shopping carts — a move that proved to be a stroke of genius. Once they were eventually deemed fashionable enough, the carts took off. Not only did his business go through the roof, Goldman began selling his creation to other supermarket chains and by 1940 he had a seven-year waiting list. The process leading to the shopping trolley was by no means a straightforward one.
Initially Goldman had trained his staff to be on alert for any customer whose basket was full or looked like they were straining with the weight of it. Store clerks would relieve them of the basket and keep it at the counter to allow them to keep shopping. When that didn’t prove to be an effective system, Goldman thought about arranging the grocery store shelves in a zigzag fashion, attaching baskets to a railroad track and having customers shuffle along in an assembly line. Unsurprisingly that idea didn’t prove to be a winner. In the end, inspiration for the design of the trolley came from a wooden folding chair in Goldman’s office. Looking at the chair while sitting in his office one day, it came to him. What if he put wheels on the bottom of the chair and had a second base on which to hold another basket? According to the folklore, he raced downstairs to find the store handyman Fred Young and the pair spent hours tinkering with a design. After the first attempt with a wooden chair collapsed under the weight of the basket they designed another using a metal frame.
The design soon evolved into what Goldman called a “folding basket carrier” and he filed the invention with the patent office — a move that helped spawn a real estate and retail empire worth half a billion dollars by the time he died in 1984. The larger, single basket successor to Goldman’s initial design is still in use today. 2
"Nou hoe het Ma gedink gaan dit lyk"? Dit is nou Klonkie se simpatieke uitlatings toe ek met die spoed, wat 'n skilpad sal verbyster, badkamer toe is. Dit werk nou so… Toe Klonkie my sien se hy: "jip, ek het mos gesê", gaan Salon toe". Mooi loop. 3
BY BRITTANY GIBSON Turmoil isn't the only thing that comes out of natural disasters and this adorable photo shoot is proof
Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to hit the United States since 2005. Its tremendous amount of damage is estimated to cost $180 billion in repair costs. Fortunately, there is light at the end of this tunnel. During this treacherous time, a family and their 10-day-old newborn from Orange, Texas were rescued from the floods by two brothers named Cris and Clint Sanford. The Chimeno family boarded the brothers’ rescue boat and they were transported to safer grounds in Lake Charles, Louisiana. What was even more incredible than the family’s rescue was the fact that their newborn, Hope, was experiencing all of this with just 10 days of life under her belt. It was then that Cris’ wife asked the Chimero family if they’d already done a newborn photoshoot, to which they responded that they hadn’t even had time to think about it. The Sanfords then connected the Chimeros with their photographer friend, Noelle Mills. Then the perfect idea sparked: to do Hope’s photo shoot on the rescue boat that saved their family. With Harvey causing so much turmoil, this heart-warming photoshoot sheds light on the beautiful things that can come of even the worst of times. “I knew the photos would resonate, but would have never dreamed to this level,” Mills says on the success of the photo shoot. “I am just honored to have been a small part of this family’s journey.” 4
Even though I have the most beautiful house and I prepare the best meals for my household, but I don’t do it out of love, then I’m as worthless as an empty casserole dish or a broken eggbeater. Even if I am the most helpful person on the school board and I buy my kids the most expensive sport gear, but I’m not there to cheer them on at the sports, then it means nothing at all. Even if I buy a room full of educational toys and I pay bags full of money for extra classes, but I don’t sit and play with my kids or help them with their homework, I will not be a true mother. A loving mother is patient—she picks up the clothes and toys again. A loving mother is kind and friendly—she allows her car to be filled with laud and sweaty kids. She does not compare her children with others and she does not brag about their achievements. She covers the injuries with love and plasters and believes in her kids, hopes for the best and handles all moans and harsh words. When I was younger my appearance and earthly belongings were important but since I became a mother the upbringing of my children is much more important. We might have to look at rebellious teens now, but one day when they’re grown up we will reap the fruits of love that we have sown in their lives when they were younger. And now, only attention, patience and love remain but the most precious of these three is: “A LOVING MOTHER”

This woman now holds the record for being the oldest woman ever to give birth to a child.
She was 72 and her husband was 79 when their baby boy was born.
It’s highly unlikely to meet such a brave couple in today’s world.

A giant Oreo cookie weighing 73.4 kg has been produced to mark the opening of a new factory in Bahrain which will produce the popular snack. Staff at Mondelēz Bahrain Biscuits W.L.L. plant produced the supersize snack, now the Largest cream filled biscuit, to announce the latest addition to Mondelēz International’s growing Middle East presence on Monday 16 April 2018. With a normal Oreo weighing 11.3 g, this new record breaker is 6,495 times bigger than what you find in a standard packet. The enormous Oreo blitzed the previous record of 28.24 kg set Hoppe Food Group & Midden Brabant College in The Netherlands back in 2011. Baked in Manama, Bahrain, the record-breaking cookie is made with the real dough and cream used in regular-sized Oreos. The record was verified by a Guinness World Records adjudicator measuring all weights and ensuring all guidelines were met. Mohamed Shalaby, Plant Director at Mondelēz Bahrain Biscuits, said: "We are extremely proud to have broken a world record for the largest cream-filled cookie at our newly established manufacturing plant in Bahrain." "I would like to congratulate the Bahrain biscuits team for their determination to achieve this milestone; it was wonderful to see the team come together and join forces to make history, especially at such a momentous occasion with the official plant inauguration taking place." After the verification and the ceremony, the Oreo was distributed among plant employees with another portion sent to a social gathering event in a Bahraini villages (attended by 150 people) on Wednesday 18 April 2018. 8
Everything you need to know about Tietze Syndrome: what is it, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and exercises! Tietze’s syndrome is a rheumatic condition which is relatively unknown. It is a chronic inflammation of the cartilage in the chest. Tietze’s syndrome is not a serious condition but is accompanied by a nasty pain. The symptoms might resemble that of a heart infarct. Tietze’s syndrome may develop very slowly but can also become suddenly manifest. It’s equally present in men and women. What is Tietze Syndrome? The chest is built from ribs that are attached to the sternum through cartilage structures. This flexible cartilage enables the chest to move flexible upon breathing: swelling up upon inhalation and shrinkage again upon exhalation. In Tietze Syndrome, this cartilage gets inflamed. Through this, there is swelling below the sternum causing a nasty pain. This pain increases during coughing, sneezing, moving and sighing and mostly occurs at one side of the chest. Tietze’s syndrome is sometimes confused with costochondritis. With this condition, the cartilage in the chest is also inflamed, but no swelling occurs. Costochondritis occurs more in women than in men. What is the cause of Tietze Syndrome? The cause of Tietze’s syndrome is not yet discovered. There are however strong clues that there are factors that play a role in the genesis of chronic inflammation and swelling of the cartilage in the thorax. It may originate from overload to the chest caused by lifting heavy objects, sustained coughing and work in a bent over position. However, Tietze’s syndrome may also arise from an accident with large effective force on the chest, respiratory infection, pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis. What are the symptoms of Tietze Syndrome? The most important complaint with Tietze’s syndrome is pain in the sternum. This might increase in intensity upon deep inhaling, sighing, sneezing or coughing. Sometimes the pain might radiate towards back, neck, shoulder and arm. Besides, a cramped and compelling feeling might arise. The impression can then arise that there are heart problems. This can trigger such an appalling feeling that hyperventilation can sometimes occur. Because of the inflammations, the skin can get a reddish color. In some patients the function of the esophagus, stomach, intestines and lungs may be disturbed. How is Tietze’s syndrome diagnosed? Tietze’s syndrome cannot be demonstrated by X-rays or a blood test. The swelling of the cartilage in the chest is not visible on X-rays. Also, the disease does not leave traces in the blood. Your doctor will therefore have to rely on your story regarding with what physical complaints you have to deal exactly. Usually, you will be referred to the hospital for a number of examinations. These aim to exclude other conditions – such as angina pectoris, gastric ulcer, pancreatitis, pulmonary embolism and heart disease. How is Tietze’s syndrome treated? There is no treatment for Tietze’s syndrome yet. The doctor will therefore focus on relieving the pain. In most cases, he will prescribe an anti-inflammatory analgesic (NSAID). In case of annoying side effects, the liquid Green-lipped mussel with Bio-Curcumin and Blackcurrant leaf can be tried as an alternative. This natural anti-inflammatory compound is active in the area around the joints. Also, the physician can give a corticosteroid injection to the painful place or decide to block the nerve between the ribs. One can also be referred to posture- or exercise therapist, such as physiotherapy, Cesar or Mensendieck. The complaints often disappear over time. However, in some patients Tietze’s syndrome progress into a chronic form. Exercises for Tietze’s syndrome In Tietze’s syndrome it is important to keep moving a lot. This will limit the consequences of this condition. In addition to keep moving enough, you can do these exercises daily. Exercise 1: breathing Take place on a chair. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breath follows through your nose and throat toward your chest and stomach. Keep your belly relaxed. Feel how your belly swells when you inhale and shrink again as you exhale. Do this exercise for 5 minutes. Finish with a deep breath and slowly blow it out. Exercise 2: posture correction Sit upright in a chair with your feet flat on the ground. Straighten your back and point your crest towards the ceiling. Put your chin in a little bit. Make your lower back hollow, leaving your shoulders slightly back and forth and the chest slightly forward. Try to correct your posture every 30 minutes. Exercise 3: Stretch exercise middle back Go on your hands and knees. First, make your back bulb while laying your head in the neck. Then you bend your back while bending your chin to the chest.

BY MORGAN CUTOLO You can stop wondering. We have the answer. Haven’t you always wondered what those little keys at the top of your keyboard do? You’ve probably only used them to adjust your volume or screen brightness, but they actually do a lot more. Keep in mind that some of these keyboard shortcuts are different depending on the type of computer you have. You are also able to change these features, and some computers come with pre-set functions for these keys that you have to change manually. So before slamming the keyboard in frustration trying to get them to work, go into your settings and see how your computer has been set up. Pressing the fn button with the F keys will typically enable them to work. Here’s the answer to the mystery of those F keys. You’ll be surprised by how much they can do. BY MEGHAN JONES The doomed French queen never actually made this condescending remark about her impoverished subjects. There are accounts of spoiled royals suggesting that poor people eat delicacies they can't afford dating back long before Antoinette's rule. In one such tale, a German noblewoman suggests that her subjects eat a sweet bread called Krosem—in the 16th century (Antoinette was born in the 18th). The "Let them eat cake" quote itself— "Qu’ils mangent de la brioche" in French— first appeared in a 1767 autobiographical account by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He attributes the quote simply to "a great princess." Considering that Marie Antoinette was a young girl at the time, it almost definitely wasn't her. .
