If you’ve ever been to the circus or a parade, you have without a doubt seen someone walking along high above the crowd on a pair of stilts. To the common man, stilts are the mainstay of theatrical performers, clowns, jugglers, and that odd looking fellow from the Liberal Arts College in their annual parade. What most people don’t know is that stilts have a long and august history in many cultures, for reasons varying from ceremonial to purely practical. Walk on Stilts Day is the perfect time to learn about this surprisingly useful tools, and maybe try out a pair for yourself! History of the Stilt A Stilt is described as a ‘pillar, post, or pole employed to assist a person or structure in standing above the ground’. While most of us, as mentioned previously, have only seen them employed for the purposes of entertainment, they have also been used in many industries, from shepherding to construction. In some cases stilts are actually employed in the construction of a building as part of the permanent structure. After all, if you find yourself living in a flood plain, upon the beach, or some other area where the ground is less than reliable, what better way to protect yourself than raising yourself above it all? The process of employing stilts for mobility, however, has been around since as far back as the 6th Century BC. In the Landes region of France, shepherds would use them to watch their flocks from an elevated position, while those who lived in town often used them to traverse the sodden earth in their normal activities. While they fell out of use for such practical uses for many years, recently there has been a resurgence in those industries where there is a need to work at a height further above ground than the worker can reach, and consistently enough where moving a ladder is at best inconvenient. The most common of these is the drywall industry, so commonly used is it, in fact, that a special design, and a name to match, has been put together for them. In Germany they are called Handwerkerstelzen. Or Drywall stilts. Celebrating Walk on Stilts Day Walk on Stilts Day gives an excellent opportunity for you to join the August ranks of people who have used the stilts for work and play throughout history. If you’re ready for a new hobby that will take you on adventures to new heights, then you’re ready to try out stilts! You can find them at a local supplier, or look online for ready made ones. The truly adventurous can even try looking online to find kits to make them. When you start out walking on stilts, try a shorter stilt to begin with, getting used to having longer legs can be quite the challenge. Then, as you get more and more proficient, start adding height to the stilts! Eventually you’ll be strolling along, with a new perspective on life! 2

"Sweety, our lines is off, come some other time" sê die lyfie met 'n mondvol aartappelskyfies by die Poskantoor vir my. Ek seg terug "Sweety, do you have any, any idea, how long it took me to find a vacant parking spot"? "Sweety, next year is near, come again, then"!
Is jy God se vrou?''

You'll definitely need a bigger boat. The great white shark known as "Deep Blue" is nearly 20 feet long and is thought to be the largest great white ever caught on film.
Shark conservationist Mauricio Hoyos Padilla captured footage of the massive beast nearly three years ago, while doing work for Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" programming. At the time, "Deep Blue" was pregnant. In a video, "Deep Blue" swims up to the cage and a diver pushes the shark as it pokes around before it eventually swims away. Hoyos Padilla captured the incredible footage near Guadalupe Island, off the west coast of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. It's estimated that "Deep Blue," who has become so famous it has its own Twitter account, is nearly 50 years old, Discovery found. According to a 2014 study, great white sharks have an average lifespan of 70 years, though it varies between male and females. It's likely that Deep Blue became so big simply because of her age, said Gavin Naylor, program director at the Florida Program for Shark Research. "It's an older animal and when you look at the distribution of any animal, it's the larger animals that are older," Naylor told Fox News in an interview. Despite her epic size, orcas, a great white shark's natural predator, wouldn't have any issues taking "Deep Blue" down. "Orcas are very smart and they work together - they're pack hunters," Naylor added. Though shark attacks are rare (88 unprovoked attacks and 30 provoked occurred during 2017), they have been in the news recently, something Naylor attributed to population density. "Shark bites are almost the consequence of density of humans in the water and density of sharks in the water," Naylor said. "It's only in circumstances when people want to be in the water during the summer and sharks are following their feed when an accidental bite happens." Last week, two children off New York's Long Island were attacked by sharks. That followed an incident earlier this month when two people were reportedly hospitalized with shark bites causing Fernandina Beach in Florida to close. 7
Prepared a bit too much lettuce for your salad? Store leftover leaves in a bowl with a paper towel on top, then seal with plastic wrap. The towel absorbs moisture, which is what turns leaves soggy and brown. Replace the towel when it becomes damp. Another trick: Sprinkle the leaves with a dash of salt, which also helps draw out extra wetness.

Preston Sharp understands what these men and women have sacrificed for our country. Young boys aren’t easily appalled, but 12-year-old Preston Sharp sure knows the feeling. “Yeah, I was surprised,” Preston said. And disappointed. Preston’s mom, April Sharp, had never seen him like that before. “Not this angry and passionate,” she said. What upset her son so much was visiting his grandpa’s grave in Redding, California, and realizing that not every veteran in the cemetery had a flag. So April told him, “Son, if you’re going to complain about something, you have to do something about it or let it go.” Next thing April knew, Preston was taking on odd jobs and soliciting donations to buy flags and flowers for every veteran in his grandpa’s cemetery. And when that cemetery was covered, he moved on to another, and then another. Here we are, nearly three years and an estimated 65,000 graves later. And he does it every week, rain or shine—especially rain. “They were out there in the rain doing their job, protecting us,” Preston said. His devotion is contagious. When word gets out that Preston will be at a cemetery— he has a Facebook page, Preston Sharp/Vet flags and Flowers—folks feel compelled to join in. People like Vietnam veteran Fred Loveland. “It’s amazing,” Loveland said. “What he’s doing brings them out because they can’t believe a young man in this country is doing what he does.”
It is a movement of young and old, of those who served and those who are so grateful they did, all led by a proud grandson who saw an injustice and decided to do something about it. 11

Texas is now home to a sweet new record for the Longest ice-cream dessert. Thousands of volunteers gathered at the Spirit of Texas festival in Wolf Pen Creek last Saturday to whip up a dessert that stretched 1,386.62 m, only 200 m short of a being a mile long! The giant sundae was comprised of 500 gallons of H-E-B Texan Tackle Crackle ice-cream (a flavour that’s made with vanilla ice-cream and candy crunch chocolate swirl). It was then topped with 300 gallons of chocolate and strawberry syrup, 2,000 cans of whipped cream, 25 pounds of sprinkles, and 20,000 cherries! Upon officially receiving their record certificate, the massive sundae was devoured in under 30 minutes by more than 4,000 festival attendees. The Spirit of Texas Festival supports the local charity community in the town of College Station, Texas. While many know the state of Texas to do things “big” the Spirit of Texas Festival is certainly no different, especially when it comes to food. In fact, they achieved the record for the Largest serving of chili con carne last year, which amounted to 2,177.24 kg! 13

I saw my King riding through the woods at first light His royal betanin cloak on the winds in flight King’s crown upon gold held so high Hero’s strength and courage that made me sigh My King, my King, how I adore thee, My heart dripping with love freeing me Longing and pure heart’s desire flying to love Seeking, finding my first love like a dove Let he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth Pick me up and save me from this barren routh For your love is better than wine First love I’m yours and you are mine The King will bring me to his banqueting hall His banner over me will be his first love call Draw me after you and let us run together! Let us fly together made birds of a feather The King has brought me into his chamber As it was I, his pure love, finding his favor Together we will be glad and rejoice; Rejoice! Forever our God made us one in soul and voice Joyce de Jager Nov 1990 19
