By Craig Sailor SEATTLE - It's the photo every tourist visiting Seattle has to have: the gum-wall selfie. The quirky oddity at Pike Place Market, for years just 15 feet wide, has turned into a canyon of chewing gum. Today, the gum wall is eight feet tall and over 50 feet long - on both sides of the alley. On a sunny weekend day, hundreds of people can be found crammed into Post Alley chewing gum, blowing bubbles and documenting the entire experience. The odor of gum hangs heavy in the air. Mika Liao was in the alley with three of her co-workers on a recent weekday. The four Taiwan residents were visiting Seattle on business. They had seen the gum wall on Instagram before leaving Asia. It was on their must-see list. "It's the top three: Pike Place market, first Starbucks, gum wall," Liao said. Space Needle? Passe. The women were all holding Starbucks coffees as they stuffed gum in their mouths. Asked what they thought of the gum wall, the women grimaced in unison. "Interesting," Liao said finally between chews. They were careful not to brush up against the multicolored wads of gum. "Everyone's DNA is here," Liao said. "Everywhere." She paused for a moment. "I'm going to leave my DNA here." The women giggled. The gum wall is perhaps Seattle's purest, most interactive public art project. It began in the early 1990s outside the entrance to the Market Theater. Unexpected Productions had just rented the space. "Our audience started that gum wall," said Mary Bacarella, who volunteered to work the company's books in the early 1990s. "Our audience would line up on that wall, and I don't know who started it, but they put a penny and a piece of gum on the wall," Bacarella said. The practice soon caught on and the gum wall was born. The market asked the theater to clean the wall. They did. "It immediately started up again," she said. After the third round of cleaning and gumming, the market management gave up and let the gum wall stay. Today, Bacarella is the management. She's just stepped in to the position of executive director of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority, which oversees some 240 shops plus restaurants, food vendors and apartments. Bacarella is decidedly pro-gum. "You walk down the alley and you think a street fair is going on," Bacarella said. "You see brides getting their picture taken in front of it, somebody doing a photo shoot." It's not just gum stuck to the walls. Coins, spoons, notes and other mementos are glued to the walls. "C+M" is spelled out on the wall in gum. Nearby, "W+C" had declared their love as well. Audrey Tewnion was standing in the alley with her 13-yearold daughter, Amy Cuthbertson, earlier this month. Both were busy chewing gun. They had been at it for 10 minutes to achieve the perfect bubble-blowing consistency. The pair were making their second visit to Seattle from Vernon, British Columbia. But it was their first time to the gum alley. "It's one of the things that you always hear about, that you have to see," Tewnion. "It's on Trip Advisor." "I've seen lots of picture of it on Instagram," Amy added. The #gumwall hashtag has more than 190,000 posts on Instagram. The Canadian mom and daughter would soon add theirs. But not everyone in the alley is a fan. Doug March has worked at the Alibi Room for a decade, the last five as a bartender. The bar and restaurant's entrance is in the middle of the alley. He thinks the gum wall took off about five years ago, after a New York magazine wrote a story about it. "I find it disgusting," March said, taking a smoke break. Around him, dozens of people were chewing, blowing bubbles and posing. "At least five times a day I have to tell the story how it started," March said. When the wall suddenly exploded in popularity, the quest to keep gum from migrating to the other side of the alley where the Alibi Room is was futile, he said. "They stuck signs up that said, 'No gum,' " March said. "Those got covered up in gum." The Alibi Room does draw a line though. Wide brass panels trim the entrance to the bar. It's completely gum-free. How often does it get cleaned? "Every day," March said in a resigned tone. The final insult to injury? They find wads of gum stuck underneath chairs. "There's a whole alley dedicated to gum out there, and you still got to stick it under the chair," he said. The wall was cleaned in 2015. Market management was concerned about the potential damage to the historic brick walls, said spokeswoman Emily Crawford. A literal ton of gum was cleaned off the wall - 2350 pounds. "We filled 94 five gallon buckets," Crawford said. "It was layered seven inches thick." Crawford said the gum wall isn't marketed or advertised, but it's in all the guidebooks and tourist websites. Tours come through the alley daily. "It's on all the lists of things to do," Crawford said. "Over the years we've seen marriage proposals, prom date asks." The wall was cleaned again in November. It's now going to be an annual task. The gum just keeps coming at an ever increasing rate. In only five months, nearly every square inch had been covered. "It's so colorful," exclaimed Mari Berber of Merced, Calif. She was visiting the gum wall with boyfriend Julian Pulido. It was the couple's first trip to Seattle. Like others, they had heard about the wall on social media. "I want to go there, I want to go the Space Needle and I want to go the market," Berber said. "That's about it." The couple were shooting video and still images and posting to Facebook and Instagram. Nearby, the four women from Taiwan were busy blowing bubbles and posing for photos in various groupings. They had been at it for 40 minutes and showed no signs of stopping.

Dit is die "Bolbettim" se skuld dat ek weer my naam krater gemaak het by die Markie Sondag… Dit werk nou so… Hoogmoed is 'n lelike ding, hy beroof jou so baie en so maklik van jou vrede.
Take Dรถnskborg, Sweden for instance, where all those who lack a beard are banished from the town to spend a day and night in the nearby forest. In town their shamefully clean-faced visages are burned in effigy by those sporting amazing beards. In southern Spain there is a tradition of having a bearded man and a beardless boy engage in a boxing match, if you can call it a boxing match when the man is armed with a sharp pike. Regardless of where you are, shaving on World Beard Day is considered to be one of the worst acts of disrespect possible, and in some places those with beards are waited on hand and foot! How World Beard Day is celebrated varies from area to area, as mentioned above, but all of them share one thing in common. The beard is held in high esteem. Organize a World Beard Day in your community, and be sure to include that manliest of outdoor cooking methods, the BBQ. Beverages are always loved, and after everyone has feasted you can hold a competition to see who has the most magnificent beard! World Beard Day honors your face ferret, and that of everyone around you!

A Twitter user named Naomi H shared on Twitter that she had accepted an internship at NASA with a rather emphatic, profanity-laden tweet. But days later, Naomi lost her internship after a Twitter frenzy ensued following her announcement, wherein she exchanged tweets with Homer Hickam, former NASA engineer, regarding her language. Hickam shared in a new blog post that losing her internship "was due to the NASA hashtag her friends used that called the agency's attention to it long after my comments were gone," not the tweet tiff. In an age where everyone seems to be sharing everything on social media, sometimes we forget to think before we tweet. If you’re sharing the news of a new internship or job at NASA, take a note from Twitter user Naomi H’s book not to use bad 'language' on Twitter. A now deleted thread started off with Naomi H sharing the news of her internship: "EVERYONE SHUT THE ********* ********* I GOT ACCEPTED FOR A NASA INTERNSHIP" Her tweet got a reply from Homer Hickam, former NASA engineer, and member of the National Space Council: "Language." To which Naomi replied, "******** my d******** and ********* I’m working for NASA" Hickam then replied with "And I am on the National Space Council that oversees NASA." It turns out, Hickam was telling the truth. He's one of nearly two dozen people named to Vice President Mike Pence's newly created National Space Council’s Users Advisory Group. Naomi’s Twitter account is now private, but @Saphykitten shared on Twitter that Naomi has lost her internship. 6

This box of tissues is one of the most colourful you’re likely to see, but it also holds the record for being the most expensive. A Japanese paper and package manufacturer has produced a very colourful and expensive box of tissues. Jyuni Hitoe by Japanese paper and package manufacturer, Daishowa Paper Products, not only contains 12 different colours, it also costs 10,000 Japanese Yen ($90 USD, £70 GBP) making it the Most expensive box of facial tissues. The multiple colours represent the 12-layer kimono worn by court ladies since the 10th century. Colours are not the only notable feature of this tissue; the box has a texture similar to a Washi traditional paper and is wrapped in a purple cloth while the finishing touch to is the subtle scent on the tissue. While it does indeed sound expensive for a box of tissues, Yu Tanaka, a designer at Daishowa Paper Products, says producing them in multiple colours is very challenging. "Because facial tissues have fine fibres, paper dust is produced at almost every stage of the manufacturing process,” he explained. “That means if you were running a production lot in one colour and start the next lot with a different colour, there is a high chance that spots of colours from the previous lot will appear. “To overcome this, we clean the entire manufacturing equipment every time we change colour, which is a painstaking process. I doubt factories other than ours would want to go this length just to make coloured tissues." Household products such as tissues are not Daishowa Paper Product's mainstay - they are more well-known for making packaging such as paper bags and boxes, as well as technical paper such as a protective film on bandages. While they have also been making tissues for around 30 years, Daishowa Paper Products wanted to clearly differentiate themselves from other tissue brands by doing something different, according to Keiji Togashi, a promotion marketer at Daishowa Paper Products. "Our president had asked the team - we all know that tissues are white, but what if we make tissues with a colour that is the opposite of white? And so we decided to make black tissues. The impact that product had was pretty strong." Upon the release of Jyuni Hitoe in 2014, Yu says the production team wanted to create a wholly Japanese experience. "The concept was for people to feel as if they are pulling out a kimono from a traditional Japanese drawer. It's not just the colours, but there's also touch and fragrance. I think that everything, from opening the package to actually using the tissues, can be a unique experience." Now with a Guinness World Records title, Yu and Keiji hope that people outside of Japan might have more opportunities to know about Jyuni Hitoe. "I hear that many of the facial tissues sold in other countries tend to be coarse. “While Jyuni Hitoe is not intended to be for everyday use, we think it shows how good a tissue can get. We are proud of our number one status, and hope that more people around the world get the chance to experience it."

Puppies. They're adorable - yes, okay, glad we agree. Ice cream: indisputably one of the best desserts. Then there's ice cream that looks like a puppy - as in, you take a spoon to its adorable little head. Uh ... some of the best things in life really never need a collaboration. Case in point: a cafe in Taiwan decided to make dogshaped ice cream treats, and people are freaked out (and rightfully so)! According to The Straits Times, each "dog" from The J.C.co Art Kitchen takes up to five hours to make. They come in three dog breeds with different flavors. Does that sound odd to you, too?! The Labrador is earl grey-flavored. Chocolate fans should go for the Pug, and the Shar Pei has a peanut flavor. Each costs between 100 and 188 Taiwanese dollars (which would be $3.50 - $6) according to Fox News. To make the dogs, the employees fill molds with "a unique mixture that freezes and creates a hairy-looking texture", The Straits Times notes. HAIRY??? As Randy Jackson circa American Idol would say, "It's gonna be a no from me, DOG." The staff applies finishing touches after the ice cream pups are stored at -22 degrees Celsius. Since the life-like treats are so popular on social media, J.C.co is having trouble keeping up with demand, according to The Straits Times, and can only make 100 dogs per day. A customer at the cafe told Asia One, "It really feels like a real dog is looking at you." Another person said, "I feel like cutting into him will hurt him, I feel sorry for him." Well, I certainly won't be beheading an ice cream puppy any time soon, but to each their own! 8

Take a bottle of soda. Shake it really hard. Gas bubbles will form inside, causing a buildup of pressure. Twist the cap off. Pressure will release from the bottle. Soda will shoot everywhere. A volcanic eruption works much the same way. Pressure builds up inside a volcano as gas bubbles form in magma. Magma is hot liquid rock beneath the surface of the Earth. Gas bubbles in the volcano need to escape. So the volcano erupts. Boom! A volcano is a mountain or hill with an opening. When a volcano erupts, magma is pushed up through the opening with great force. When magma reaches the Earth’s surface, it is called lava. Lava can be as hot as 2,200°F (1,204°C). Some volcanic eruptions are explosive. Lava shoots into the sky. Gas and hot pieces of rock and ash are also released. Other eruptions are effusive. Lava oozes slowly from the volcano. The intensity of an eruption depends on a few factors. One is the magma’s temperature. Another is the magma’s thickness. The amount of gas trapped within the magma is also an important factor. The Ring of Fire About 75% of the Earth’s volcanoes are located in a region called the Ring of Fire. This 25,000-mile “ring’ is located around the Pacific Ocean. It runs from the southern tip of South America and up the west coast of North America. It continues across the Bering Strait and then south through Japan to New Zealand. The ring sits along the outline of several tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are the large puzzle pieces that make up the Earth’s crust. The crust is Earth’s outer layer. Most volcanoes form at the edges of tectonic plates. These huge plates are constantly shifting. Sometimes, the plates pull apart or slide into each other. When this happens, magma rises to fill in the space. Strong pressure and intense heat force the magma upward. It squeezes upward like toothpaste through a tube. Heating Up Volcanoes can be dangerous—especially to the millions of people around the world who live near one. When a volcano erupts, lava, hot ash, steam, and rocks are released. In addition, volcanic eruptions can cause other natural disasters. These include landslides, mudslides, earthquakes, and tsunamis. The most destructive volcanic event in U.S. history occurred in 1980. That is when Mount Saint Helens, in Washington State, erupted. The eruption destroyed entire forests. It killed 57 people. Mount Saint Helens is located within the Ring of Fire. It is a composite volcano, or stratovolcano. This is the most common type of volcano. It is tall and cone-shaped. A composite volcano is made up of layers of rock and ash. Its eruptions are often violent. Another historically important volcanic event occurred in 79 A.D. in Italy. That is when Mount Vesuvius erupted. It buried the city of Pompeii in lava and ash. The city and its people were lost. Centuries later, scientists discovered their remains. Volcanoes can be destructive. But they can also create new land. The Hawaiian Islands were created by the eruptions of shield volcanoes. These large, low-lying volcanoes are made up almost entirely of layers of hardened lava. Another type of volcano is the cinder cone. These shoot lava into the air like a sputtering fountain. A cinder cone eruption often comes from a single volcanic vent in the Earth’s crust. Lava cools quickly in the air. It hardens into glassy rocks around the volcano’s opening. One example of a cinder cone volcano is Sunset Crater, in Arizona. A Powerful Force Volcanoes have played an important role in shaping our Earth. Ash from volcanoes adds helpful minerals to soil. This helps plants grow strong. Healthy plants produce oxygen for humans and animals to breathe. Volcanoes also remove heat from the Earth’s interior. This helps keep our planet cool. In recent years, a new benefit of volcanoes has surfaced. Scientists are turning to volcanoes to help power cities. Researchers are exploring geothermal energy. It involves tapping into the heat beneath the Earth’s surface to generate electricity. In Iceland, 25% of the nation’s energy is geothermal. Volcanoes may be unpredictable. But as we learn more about how they work, they will become even more important to life on Earth.

John Winterman, a managing partner at the restaurant Bâtard in New York City, recently posted a message on Facebook bemoaning how he was "beginning to feel it may be his duty as a restaurateur to grab people by the scruff of their neck and introduce them to their dining companions when they have their face stuck in their phones at the table." I called Winterman to learn more about the source of his frustration, and he shared that in the past month he has witnessed tables of two people, on multiple occasions, engaging more with their phones than with the person sitting across from them. "In one case, they were actually celebrating an anniversary," Winterman said. "Maybe that's how they've lasted so long." Beaumont Etiquette founder Myka Meier, who runs the Plaza Hotel's Finishing Program, says that with modern etiquette it is important to "match the formality of your phone etiquette with the restaurant at which you are dining." In other words, while texting might be fine at a coffee shop, it's best to keep phones out of sight for formal or semi-formal dining. Winterman previously worked as maître d' at Daniel, the bastion of French fine dining on the Upper East Side, and noted one particularly memorable experience around the time that the first iPad was released. One of Daniel's delightful quirks is the purse stools it provides diners, and in this instance one guest, who was seated with his family, had propped up his tablet on one of the stools to watch an NBA game at the table. "I had to go tell the table that electronic devices used like that were prohibited in the dining room," Winterman said. He also had to tell another party that unfortunately they could not play music on their iPhone speaker throughout their meal at Daniel. "Ultimately, it’s a distraction for other people," Winterman said. "I’ve always believed in the restaurant as being a miniature escape from day-to-day life." He pointed out that "it all comes down to basic manners" and "giving the other person you’re with their due respect," and that texting or checking your Instagram feed are, for him, in the same category as taking a phone call at the table-an offense that Meier and the Emily Post Institute agree is unacceptable. The proper protocol if one's phone rings at the table, she says, is to "simply excuse yourself and step out of the restaurant." Having a phone conversation while sitting in the dining area is rude to not only the person sharing your table, but the rest of the restaurant's guests as well. Another offense that can lead to checking your phone, even inadvertently? Leaving it on the table. "Regardless of the formality of a restaurant, never put anything on the table that is not a part of the meal," Meier says. (The rule applies to sunglasses and wallets, too.) One of Winterman's Facebook friends left a comment on his post that said, essentially, "people are going to be people and this is the new norm." We're not sure it has to be. 14
