JOB 28:28 Om die Here te dien, dit is WYSHEID, om die kwaad te vermy, dit is INSIG

In 2003, two mates from Melbourne, Australia (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) were having a quiet beer at the Gypsy Bar in Fitzroy when their conversation turned to recurring fashion trends. The moustache, a fixture in past decades, was nowhere to be seen in recent trends. They joked about bringing it back. The two friends decided to talk their mates into growing a Mo. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They designed the rules of Movember (which are still in place today) and agreed to charge ten dollars to grow a Mo. Trav designed the first Movember logo, and they sent around an email titled ‘Are you man enough to be my man?’ They found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge. Those first 30 Mo Bros grew their moustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a decision was made to formalise the concept and get all participants growing for a cause. Adam Garone stepped up to help take Movember to the next level, registered a company and created a website. Justin Coghlan (JC) came on board to run the campaign interstate. The guys researched men's health issues and agreed to formally support prostate cancer as their cause. They also explored prostate cancer groups and Adam approached the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). The PCFA agreed to accept funds from the 2004 campaign but was not an official men’s health partner. 450 Mo Bros raised AUD 54,000, with Spain and the UK becoming home to the first international Mo Bros. The entire proceeds were donated to the PCFA – all costs were covered by the four co-founders until (and including) the 2005 campaign. That first Movember cheque to the PCFA was the largest single donation they received. JC joined Luke, Trav, and Adam to run the 2005 campaign, and the Urchin team designed a new campaign creative with the concept 'Give Prostate Cancer a Kick in the Arse'. A formal agreement was struck with the PCFA and they became Movember’s first official men’s health partner. That year, 9,315 Mo Bros raised AUD 1.2 million for the PCFA. In 2006, the four co-founders established an official Australian charity, the Movember Foundation. By now, the campaign was too big to manage on nights and weekends, so Adam and Luke began working for Movember full time. Together they employed Movember’s first full time employee, and the campaign was run from Prahran in Melbourne, and Luke’s apartment in Queensland. Luke developed Movember’s official tagline: Changing the face of men’s health. Further research into men’s health in Australia revealed that depression was a significant issue, and beyondblue: the national depression and anxiety initiative was brought on as Movember’s second men’s health partner. That year, the campaign was launched in New Zealand in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ. Small unofficial campaigns were also run in the UK and Spain. A total of 56,129 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in Australia and New Zealand raised AUD 9.3 million. In 2007, encouraged by the growing enthusiasm and efforts of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world, the four cofounders decided to grow the campaign internationally. Adam moved to Los Angeles to launch the US and Canadian campaigns in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada. JC launched the UK campaign with The Prostate Cancer Charity, and Luke ran the Australian and New Zealand campaigns. A small campaign was also run in Spain in partnership with FEFOC. The Movember Board was formalised and extended beyond the four co-founders. Trav and the team at Urchin continued to look after the campaign creative and the concept that year was 'Mo man is an island: Mindset, Journey, Destination'. The 2007 campaign saw 134,171 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK and Spain raise AUD 21.5 million and generate enormous awareness of men’s health issues. Since those first few years, Movember has continued to grow at an extraordinary pace. There are now official campaigns in 21 countries and together we’ve raised more than AUD 730 million to fund over 1,000 men’s health programs. Our focus has broadened to four key men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. We’ve seen the growth of millions of moustaches, significant breakthroughs in scientific research, and a fundamental shift in the conversation around men’s health. With the support of millions of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from all over the world, Movember is working towards its vision: to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. 2

"Sticks and stones, may brake my bones, but names will never hurt me"… Twak man! Ons sou mense al 6 maande ken, dan stel hulle my voor as "Jumbo se vrou"… My naam was amptelik Jumbo se vrou… Laat dit klink asof hy my 'n groot eer aandoen… Ek sou in elk geval gaan… Man ek "like" 'n lekker gesellige tafel, en dit was ons beslis by die Astra aand… Seën en groete van huis tot huis..x Rika 3

Koko the gorilla is famed for acquiring language via a large number of hand signs. Having signed her love for babies, her minders decided to get her some kittens, they all fall in love instantly. To celebrate Koko's 44th birthday, she was allowed to pick two kittens from a litter: Ms Gray, a blue-gray tabby, and Ms Black, a brown tabby. Koko was introduced to the Kittens and fell in love instantly. The kittens in return were very affectionate towards the western lowland gorilla. In a touching moment, Koko signs the words 'cat' and 'baby', indicating her understanding of the wee creatures. Her grasp of language is incredible. Having been exposed to the spoken word since a very young age, she understands approximately 2,000 spoken English words and is capable of signing more than 1,000. It's not the first time Koko has kept pets, she was given a cat in 1983. When this cat was replaced with a stuffed animal, she refused to play with is, and continued to sign 'sad'. In 1985, she picked out two new kittens and named them Lipstick and Smokey. When asked the why she chose the name Lipstick 'Lipstick', Koko responded 'Lips lipstick'. The kitten indeed had a pink mouth 4

REEBOK Jennifer McCaffery Ingenuity, chance, and even a typo led to the names of some of the world’s best-known brands.

British brothers Joe and Jeff Foster named their new athle-tic wear company in 1958 after finding the term “rhebok” in a South African dictionary that Joe Foster won during a race as a child. The term refers to a type of antelope. 5

We still don’t understand why we see the particular images we do. Why am I seeing stars? You’ve probably seen them while falling asleep—-kaleidoscope patterns playing behind your eyelids. What are they? We see because photons of light bounce onto our retinas, reaching brain cells called neurons, which transform their energy into an electrical signal for the brain’s visual cortex. But sometimes the noggin’s wiring goes haywire and sends phantom cues called phos-phenes. They are the tiny stars that blur your vision when you whack your head or rub your eyes. Physical force can jar our neurons, causing them to fire and send errant messages, says Jason -Samaha, a psychologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. But phosphenes also occur at rest with our eyes shut. That’s because the visual cortex creates some spontaneous activity all the time, Samaha says. Where the resulting motifs originate is uncertain, but scientists think they are far from arbitrary. Seeing similar images, again and again, makes the same neurons fire together, strengthening their connections. We see a LOT of vertical and horizontal lines, such as in walls, doorways, tree trunks, and even the horizon. The more the cells responsible for seeing such lines fire, the stronger their links become—and the more likely we are to see those patterns when we’re trying to snooze. 6

TOASTER Marissa Laliberte The type of bread you’re toasting affects how hot you should set your toaster. While white and sweet breads heat quickly, heavier ones like rye take more time. Even slices from the same loaf might need a different setting after a few days. Once bread starts to dry out, you might need lower heat for the less fresh slices, which don’t take as long to toast.

Recently, a Twitter thread went viral for detailing all the ways in which a small gesture of kindness from stranger made a big impact on someone else’s life. Now, a new tweet shows how someone doesn’t even need to be present for this small, selfless act in order for it to warm the hearts of more than just the recipient. A few days ago, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School Rowing Club in Birmingham, England, came across a red rose along with a note pinned to a lake’s gate that read the following: “Please can someone throw this into the lake for me? My late husband’s ashes are in the lake and I can’t get to the lakeside in my wheelchair anymore and gates are locked—have to drive back up north tonight. Thank you x” It’s only too easy to ignore a request like this one, but they didn’t. Instead, they threw the rose into the lake, as instructed, and then posted photos on Twitter with the caption, “This note was left on the gate at the water this afternoon. No name or number left but whoever you are, rest assured your rose is in place in the middle of the lake.” The tweet went viral, gaining over 48,000 retweets and 169,000 likes in just four days, with many commenting that it restored their faith in the good of humanity. 8

Claire Nowak Your favorite cartoons growing up have some interesting backstories. Mickey and Minnie have the same birthday

In 1933, Walt Disney stated that Mickey’s birthday was October 1, 1928, since that was “the day on which his first picture was started,” waltdisney.org reports. But in 1978, Dave Smith, founder of the Disney Archives, changed the date to November 18, 1928, the premiere of Steamboat Willie. The 1928 animated short officially debuted Mickey and Minnie Mouse to the world, which meant that date was Minnie’s birthday, too. 9

Marissa Laliberte SUNSCREEN Your vehicle should be used for transportation, not storage. Keeping sunscreen in the car could hurt your health and security. Ironically, the active ingredients in sunscreen break down in high heat. Leaving it in the car on a hot day could reduce its effectiveness. Plus, the heat could cause it to explode, leaving you with a hot mess.

This experiment is great for testing if hot water molecules really move faster than cold ones. Pour some water, drop in some food coloring and compare results. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • • • •

A clear glass filled with hot water A clear glass filled with cold water Food coloring An eye dropper

INSTRUCTIONS:   

Fill the glasses with the same amount of water, one cold and one hot. Put one drop of food coloring into both glasses as quickly as possible. Watch what happens to the food colouring.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? If you watch closely you will notice that the food coloring spreads faster throughout the hot water than in the cold. The molecules in the hot water move at a faster rate, spreading the food coloring faster than the cold water molecules which mover slower.

Who knew a PB&J could cause so much anxiety? Marissa Laliberte Arachibutyrophobia: Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. It’s an uncomfortable feeling for everyone, but the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth is one of those full-blown weird phobias for some. Some people can handle eating small amounts, but others avoid peanut-based products like peanut butter sauces and ice creams. It can be rooted in a broader phobia like the fear of sticky textures or choking, or it can occur independently.
