Electric car sets altitude record after climbing more than 5,000m to reach glacier By Echo Zhan VIDEO: https://youtu.be/1QF4ZG_M6KE

Battling temperatures of -5° (23°F) has not stopped an electric car from setting a brand new Guinness World Records title. The NIO ES8 and driver Chen Haiyi from China set a new record for the Highest altitude achieved in an electric car with a height of 5,715.28 m when it reached the Purog Kangri glacier on 24 September 2018. The record attempt was designed to show off the sport utility vehicle's (SUV) reliability and energy supply at high altitudes and in extremely cold areas, as well as the company’s problem-solving ability in extreme conditions. NIO also aimed to show that electric vehicles can go as far as traditional petrol and diesel-powered cars. The support team studied the feasibility of installing charging points along the route as the company looks to encourage more drivers to use electric power. A spokesman said: "We hope that in the future, all electric vehicle owners can go to Tibet to travel. As a result, it is also beneficial to our environment." This was the first time an electric car has reached Purog Kangri, a 422-km2 glacier considered to be the third largest in the world which is only smaller than the Arctic and Antarctic and with an average height of 6,600 m above sea level. The record for driving to the highest altitude by car is 6,688 m, achieved by Chileans Gonzalo Bravo and Eduardo Canales in 2007. However they used a modified Suzuki Samurai (due to the for their ascent of the Ojos Del Salado volcano in Atacama, Chile. Their car had to be modified as low air pressure causes problems for combustion engines which work by igniting a mixture of air and fuel. As the air gets thinner, the engine can't pull enough of it into the cylinders to react properly. The NIO ES8 needed no modifications for its record-breaking journey as it draws its energy from a chemical battery and is unaffected by air pressure changes. The technology behind the record: Guinness World Records' category executive for engineering records, Jason Fernandes, explains how the electric car can drive to such an altitude and avoid the difficulties faced by petrol-engine equivalents. Electric vehicles have advantages over combustion-based fueled vehicles, most especially related to ambient air pressure. Air pressure reduces proportionally quickly with altitude. Combustion vehicles cannot easily adjust its operating parameters to cope with the variations in the amount of air available for air/fuel combustion. A car will typically be designed to perform as best as it can for the usual market. This can be at altitudes of only 1/5 of the altitude usually required for a record. It is worth noting that in some higher altitude places in the world, lower octane rated fuel is made available to try to partially negate the poorer combustion experience. Another possible effect of lower air pressure is vapor lock – the fuel vaporizing at lower-than-normal pressure. Electric cars only have to ensure the heat produced through the chemical reactions in the battery is suitably safely expelled. However, the heat is far less than in a fuel-based vehicle. The heat is substantially less than is needed to heat the car during icy weather. There are some minor maintenance issues which electric vehicles face. But generally it is otherwise unaffected by large climbs in altitude. 2

POTATOES Meghan Jones You know to avoid raw meat and eggs. But there are plenty of other foods that you definitely want to cook before eating, and some of them might surprise you. Yes, this tuber-iffic mealtime staple should never be eaten raw! “Eating potatoes raw can cause bloating and undesirable gastrointestinal effects, because potatoes contain starches that are resistant to being digested,” says Dr. Lisa Davis, the chief nutrition officer at Terra’s Kitchen. Even scarier, if raw potatoes spend a long time in a warm or damp area, they can turn green and develop a toxin called solanine. If a potato appears to have green spots on it, you should avoid eating it altogether, because the solanine could cause food poisoning. 6

An 81-year-old woman is overjoyed after discovering her 103-year-old birth mother is still alive after her 61-year-search to find her. Mrs Macken, who grew up in Kirwan House, a protestant run female orphanage in Dublin, started trying to find her mother when she turned 19. She phoned RTE Radio One earlier in January to tell presenter Joe Duffy she had finally found her mother and was "the happiest person alive." "I think I am Ireland's oldest orphan" says 80-year-old Eileen Macken. Born in the Bethany Home and moved to Kirwan House at 2. Given someone else's birth cert at 16 and lived under that identity for 60 years. Found out, after DNA, the family she thought was hers was not. #Shamepic.twitter.com/ ZInfqvaYMe — Stay With Me Exhibition (@mynamesisbridge) June 30, 2018. "I can't believe it, when I got the word that she was alive, all I want to do is to meet her" Mrs Macken told the radio show. "The doctors couldn’t understand why don’t you know this, why don’t you know that. I got a bit upset once and I said, 'Because I'm an orphan, I know nothing, absolutely nothing'," she said. 'I'm not an orphan anymore'. A Bethany Home survivor - who has found her birth mother still alive at the age of 103 - hopes to be reunited with her in the coming weeks. Eileen Macken says the discovery means the world to her, after decades of searching. Posted by RTÉ News on Saturday, January 26, 2019. "I'd love to go and scream it from a mountain, 'I'm not an orphan anymore!'". Mrs Macken was helped by a genealogist who heard her call-in to the radio station previously, discussing her search. In a bid to find her birth parents, Mrs Macken took a DNA test. "My mum is 103 and she will soon be 104" explained Mrs Macken. "I spoke to her on the phone but she couldn't hear me. She's a bit like myself, I've only one good ear. "She kept saying, “I can't hear you, I can’t hear you. 'All I want is to see her' "Unfortunately she is across the water and I've had two cousins who have come on to help me out since they got the word that I had found who my mother was and where she was. "They now know that all I want is to see her. “The sadness that goes with being alone, even to this day, different things would set me off, I'd say, 'if only I had a brother, if only I had a sister', I think it's just within you that you have no blood relatives. But I have now."

Lauren Cahn People often fake their own deaths to get out of trouble, whether they’re escaping a threat, debt, or a prison sentence. Aimee Semple McPherson: On May 18, 1926, Canadian-born evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappeared while swimming at a Los Angeles beach. As rescue teams searched for her, one team member died, and a grief-struck follower of the charismatic religious leader drowned herself in despair. Five weeks passed, and McPherson turned up in Mexico, claiming to have gone off the grid in the course of fleeing would-be kidnappers. The kidnapping story seemed shady and was investigated as a possible fraud. However, it remained unresolved until McPherson’s actual death in 1944.

A 3-year-old boy who was found alive after having been missing for days told family members that he was busy spending time with a bear. Casey Hathaway was playing with other children on Tuesday when he vanished from his grandmother’s yard in a rural part of eastern North Carolina. He was found alive two days later from where he disappeared after community search crews received a tip. Casey’s aunt, Breanna Hathaway, posted Friday on Facebook that her nephew was home, healthy and smiling ― and had quite the tale to relate about his experience. “He said he hung out with a bear for two days,” Hathaway said. She was willing to roll with the story, saying, “God sent him a friend to keep him safe. … Miracles do happen.” In another post, Hathaway said Casey likes to watch “Masha and the Bear,” a show about a girl who lives in the woods with a paternal bear who keeps her safe. Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said at a news conference Thursday that search crews found Casey wet, cold and tangled in vines, but not seriously injured. He was “a little lethargic, but warm,” when he was found, Hughes told WCTI-TV in an interview. The sheriff said Casey “wanted water and his mom” when he was found. The boy “didn’t really get into... how he was able to survive,” though he did mention “having a friend in the woods who was a bear,” the sheriff added, without commenting further on that scenario. There were no signs of abduction, Hughes said. “He’s up and talking,” Casey’s mother, Brittany Hathaway, said at the news conference after thanking search crews. “He’s already asked to watch Netflix, so he’s good, he’s good.” The family is planning to set up a post office box to handle the huge wave of support, including from people who Hathaway said want to send stuffed teddy bears. Breanna Hathaway posted on Facebook that the family appreciates the bear gifts, while advising those sending them to “remember that he can only [take] home so many.” This article originally appeared on HuffPost. 15

“MONA LISA” Diana Bruk Da Vinci’s 15th-century masterpiece is one of the most recognizable artworks in the world, but there’s more to see here than that infamous half-smile. Firstly, there’s some speculation that she’s pregnant, given the way her arms are positioned over her belly and the veil around her shoulders, which was often worn by pregnant women during the Italian Renaissance. But the newest findings are in her eyes. In 2011, Italian researcher Silvano Vinceti claimed that he found letters and numbers microscopically painted onto them. He told the Associated Press that the “L” over her right eye likely stands for the artist’s name. But the meanings of the letter “S” he sees in her left eye and the number “72” under the arched bridge in the backdrop are less clear. Vinceti believes the “S” might refer to a woman in the Sforza dynasty that ruled Milan, meaning the woman in the painting may not be Lisa Gherardini, as it’s long been believed. As for the “72,” Vinceti argues that could be due to the numbers’ significance in both Christianity and in Judaism. For example, “7” refers to the creation of the world, and the number “2” could refer to the duality of men and women.
