The Way This Cowboy Plays Music for the Dying Will Move You to Tears Jennifer McCaffery Freddie Fuller, also known as the Singing Cowboy, performs dozens of musical last wishes. But one performance stands out as the most powerful. When Freddie Fuller arrived to perform in the hospital room in Temple, Texas, Pam Golightly worried it was already too late. Her stepfather, Dennis Strobel, was dying. At 88, Strobel had just been moved to the palliative care unit. After spending five days by his side, Golightly could tell that something had changed in the Korean War veteran. He had become agitated, and a nurse had told her Strobel’s time was near. “You’re probably wasting your time,” Golightly told Fuller. But Fuller, wearing a cowboy hat and toting a Taylor acoustic guitar, shared with her what medical professionals had told him time and time again over the years: Hearing may be the last sense to go. “Let me go in and play,” Fuller said. “It’s as much for you as it is for him.” Fuller, 68 and a fulltime musician, is known professionally as the Singing Cowboy. With two albums, the country and folk musician has performed all over the United States, as well as overseas for American troops. He also delights schoolkids with a one-man show called “History of the Texas Cowboy 1850–1900.”
Growing up in Salado, Texas, Fuller heard gospel music all the time from his mother. She even sang as she hung clothes on the line. And she encouraged her young son’s musical talent. When she was dying of cancer, in 1987, he put their love of song to its greatest use. He would crawl into her hospital bed with his guitar and sing her favourites: “Amazing Grace,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” and “I’ll Fly Away.” His mother seemed to relax, a peaceful look crossing her face. “That moment allowed her and I to connect like we used to when I was singing as a kid,” Fuller recalls. It emphasized to him the power of music. Consciously or subconsciously, people allow it to go to deep, sacred parts of their hearts and souls, Fuller believes. So when he heard about a non-profit organization called Swan Songs, he gave them a call. Since 2005, Swan Songs has arranged more than 800 free musical last wishes—bedside performers from bagpipers to mariachi bands—at hospitals, hospices, and private homes in and around Austin, Texas. Fuller signed up on the spot. Since then, he has performed dozens of musical vigils. Sometimes they’re almost festive, with terminally ill people surrounded by family, including one patient who sang along and danced gingerly with her walker. Other times, they’re quieter, as Fuller’s experience with his mom was. And sometimes they feel a bit like a miracle. That was the case with Golightly’s stepfather. He enjoyed country music, and Swan Songs sent Fuller. When Fuller arrived at the hospital that day last February, Strobel seemed ready to say goodbye. Golightly and her sister, Paula Guerra, watched their stepdad’s every breath, each holding one of his hands. Fuller played some Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Jackson Browne songs. After 45 minutes, Golightly asked for just one more song. Fuller chose “Love, Me,” a country ballad by Collin Raye. “I played the last song, sang the last note, and hit the last guitar chord, and he took his last breath,” Fuller says. “She, her sister, and I looked at one another, saying: ‘Oh my gosh, we just experienced one of the most magical moments in our lives.’” “It was a gift for us all,” Golightly says of Fuller’s singing. “At a really sad time, it was beautiful.” 2
"Sit hoendermis op jou bolip, dit laat snorre groei", of vir my. "Meisiekinders sit nie op tafels nie, dan gaan jy nie 'n man kry nie"! My knie gee verlede Sondag so 'n steekpyn, en daar staan ek, ek kan nie voorentoe nie, en ook nie agtertoe nie. Ek roep benoud Klonkie se kant toe, wat my soos 'n skaap ter slagting bed toe help… ek hinkepink toe kerk toe.
Die 2 vertel my dat dit been brittle maak. Op skool glo die kinders, as jy 'n asyn lappie om jou gewrig of arm draai, en jy slaan met 'n liniaal of iets wat swaar is, breek daai been… Genugtig, ek kon by die asyn affertse sweer! Ek hoor by my vriendin van die goeie boereraat… Hy lê en ek gooi daai koeksoda so skoon in daai lieste… Vir die volgende reaksie was ek net so min voorbereid, soos vir die apteek dames se kommentaar. Die man spring daar op, brul soos 'n leeu, praat in tale... nie vir kinders se ore bedoel nie, storm by my verby, ruk die stort se deur oop, maak die krane oop... dis koue water en hy hou niks van koue water nie, gil eers soos 'n dogtertjie en toe hoor ek presies hoe hy voel oor my poging… Al my goedbedoelde TLC in sy maai. Rika 3

THE DISEASE THAT CAUSES YOU TO SPEAK WITH A FOREIGN ACCENT Brooke Nelson Sufferers of foreign accent syndrome randomly wake up one day and begin speaking with a foreign accent. This condition is so rare (only 60 cases exist!) that doctors originally thought the patients were delusional. But in 2002, scientists at Oxford University discovered that sufferers shared similar brain abnormalities that caused changes to their speech pitch and syllables. The syndrome can also be brought on by a head injury or stroke, studies show. 6
In 1902 this building was built as a military hospital. In the annual report of 1901/1902 it states that Lazarett consisted of the following: Hospital with 13 rooms & 2 rooms with toilets Building consisting of 6 housekeeper rooms, 2 Corridors & a lounge for the housekeepers. A depot consisting of 4 rooms & 1 room for the depot manager. In 1904 – 1908 it was changed into a military hospital and on 14 May 1909 was run as the new District Hospital. On 27 December 1909, the District Hospital was closed and thereafter handed over to the City of Swakopmund. In 1912 the City of Swakopmund and the “Bavarian Association of the women of the Red Cross for the Colonies “combined the formation of a Board of Trustees between them. On 1 April 1914, the handing over of the building at the Bavarian National Association of the Red Cross for the colonies with the requirement to set up a rest home took place. Originally it was named after the late wife of the Bavarian Crown Prince, Rupprecht Maria Luitpold Ferdinand, Maria Gabriele Princess Rupprecht Home which was supervised by MARIE DOUGLAS. Ample funds for the renovation, including the beautiful curved Pediment on the roof were funded by her. In 1925, a delivery station opened on the rear grounds after an agreement with the Catholic Hospital in addition, because the delivery station at the hospital was closed. In the middle of the 1930’s a Children’s Recovery and Baby Home was opened and in 1954 an extension and conversion for a Student Hostel was done. 1980 Renovation for the district Hall was one and rented out to the Rössing Uranium Mining Company Limited. From 1985 onwards, the student population was very low and disappointing, they started taking in to some seniors, therefore the conversion to a retirement home. April 1989, the closure of the maternity ward took place and it was converted into a nursing home. The hotel building remained a pension since the takeover of the Bavarian National Association.

Not sure what to do with your Valentine’s Day flowers afterwards? Making a keepsake of your memories is easier than you might think. Whether it’s your priceless bridal bouquet or a particularly gorgeous get-well arrangement from a friend, drying your flowers will preserve their beauty and sentimental value. Check out our step-by-step guides to two different methods of drying flowers below. But first, in order to assess if and how your flowers will dry well, consider the following: • Air drying works best for bouquets and for robust flowers such as roses, or small, long-lasting varieties like lavender. • Individual gerbera daisies, chrysanthemums, roses, and tulips are great candidates for the microwave flower drying technique, which will preserve their color and structure better than air drying does. • For more delicate flowers like lilies, try another preservation technique, such as pressing. • Fully mature blooms will likely lose their petals in the drying process, so don’t wait too long to begin drying your flowers.
How to Air Dry Flowers • Strip excess foliage from flowers and cut stems to desired length (no shorter than six inches). To help flowers retain their colour during the drying process, make sure to remove them from sunlight as soon as they’re cut. Hang flowers individually or rubber-band stems together to hang a bouquet. • Find a dark, dry area with good circulation, such as an attic or unused closet. With unflavoured dental floss, secure the bottom of the flowers’ stems to a hanger so that they hang upside down to dry. Leave flowers for two to three weeks until completely dry. • Remove flowers from hangers and spray with unscented hairspray for protection.
How to Dry Flowers with a Microwave This method of flower-drying requires silica gel, which you can find in craft stores. The gel preserves the shape of the flowers, and can be used over and over again. • Find a microwave-safe container that will hold your flowers and fit into the microwave. (Do not use a dish you want to use for food again after this project.) • Cover the bottom of the container with an inch or two of silica gel, a bit more for larger blossoms. Place flowers blossom-up in the gel and then pour more gel over the petals. Pour gently so that petals don’t get flattened. • Place the uncovered container in the microwave. Microwave temperature and time will vary according to the type of flower, so this step requires a bit of trial and error. Start the microwave on one or two heat levels above defrost for 2-5 minutes. (Roses can withstand more heat, while daisies prefer lower temperatures.) Check your flower’s progress after a short time and then periodically. Increase heat and time as needed. • Once flowers are dry, open the microwave and immediately cover the container. Remove the covered container from the microwave, open the top a quarter of a centimetre, and let it sit for 24 hours. • Clean the gel from the petals with a fine brush and then mist with an acrylic spray (also available at craft stores). Finally, display or use your dried flowers in craft projects as you like. Dried flowers fade quickly in sunlight or extreme heat, so be sure to keep them in cool areas away from windows. 10

Lauren Cahn Get ready to have the hair on the back of your neck stand on end because these unsolved mysteries are among the most chilling we’ve ever heard. The Incident at Dyatlov Pass: On the first night of February 1959, nine ski-hikers died mysteriously in the mountains of what is now Russia. The night of the incident, the group had set up camp on a slope, enjoyed dinner, and prepared for sleep—but something went catastrophically wrong because the group never returned. On February 26, searchers found the hikers’ abandoned tent, which had been ripped open from the inside. Surrounding the area were footprints left by the group, some wearing socks, some wearing a single shoe, some barefoot, all of which continued to the edge of a nearby wood. That’s where the first two bodies were found, shoeless and wearing only underwear. The scene bore marks of death by hypothermia, but as medical examiners inventoried the bodies, as well as the other seven that were discovered over the months that followed, hypothermia no longer made sense. In fact, the evidence made no sense at all. One body had evidence of a blunt force trauma consistent with a brutal assault; another had third-degree burns; one had been vomiting blood; one was missing a tongue, and some of their clothing was found to be radioactive. Theories floated include KGB-interference, drug overdose, UFO, gravity anomalies, and the Russian version of the Yeti. Recently, a documentary filmmaker presented a theory involving a terrifying but real phenomenon called “infrasound,” in which the wind interacts with the topography to create a barely audible hum that can nevertheless induce powerful feelings of nausea, panic, dread, chills, nervousness, raised heartbeat rate, and breathing difficulties. The only consensus remains that whatever happened involved an overwhelming and possibly “inhuman force.”

Maria Paraskeva, a bride from Cyprus, has achieved her lifelong dream after creating the world's Longest wedding veil in preparation for her wedding. The seemingly never-ending lace veil measured 6,962.6 m, in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 14 August 2018. That's the same length as 63-and-a-half American football fields! "My dream as a child has always been to break the Guinness World Records title for the longest wedding veil," said Maria. The wedding dress and the wedding veil were created to meet professional standards, and the total material came to 4000 euros. Maria bought 7,100 m of tulle rolls that were 1.8m wide. The hardest part of the process for Maria was finding a factory that could produce the tulle rolls into a veil that met professional standards and dimensions. This research took her a month. She finally found a company in Greece that was willing to make the rolls into 1000 m veils. The factory took 3 months to create and deliver the tulle rolls to Maria's town of Larnaca. Professional tailors then joined all the pieces by hand to create the full wedding veil. The measurement of the veil took place in a school playing field, the closest place to Maria that could fit the reams and reams of fabric. Maria and her friends created a custom made tool to help unravel the veil. The tool was attached to the back of a pickup truck, which then circled the field, letting out the veil. 30 volunteers were on hand to pin down the veil as it was unrolled from truck. It took around 6 hours to deploy the veil to its full length. "We couldn't have done this without the help people that attended the event that helped to lay down the veil and the photographers," Maria added. Anyone was welcome to attend, inspect, participate or simply watch. The piece that was covering bride’s face was joined with the rest of the pieces on site to form the finished product. To measure the wedding veil a professional surveyor attended the event. The measurement was taken in front of everyone using a tape measure, and was verified by a civil engineer, and a quantity surveyor.
"I have dreamed of breaking this record for almost my whole life. 30 volunteers helped to make my dream come true" Now married, we wonder if Maria will one day have a daughter to continue the record breaking legacy.

Marissa Laliberte How many do you still believe? Myth: The Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure you can see from the moon Interestingly, this myth has been around at least since 1932, when a Ripley’s Believe it or Not! cartoon deemed the Great Wall of China is “the mightiest work of man—the only one that would be visible to the human eye from the moon.” Of course, that was almost 30 years before a machine would touch down on the moon, so the claim was entirely unfounded. Astronauts have now confirmed that even the Great Wall actually can’t be seen from space, except at low altitudes. Even at those (relatively) low heights, it’s actually easier to see roads and plane runways, whose colors don’t blend into the ground like the Great Wall’s do. Not that the landmark isn’t impressive...
