A Look Inside The Largest Animal In The World By Rob Dimery The record-setting anatomy of the blue whale: a look inside the largest animal in the world On 16 February, cetacean fans everywhere celebrate World Whale Day, paying tribute to these remarkable creatures while also raising awareness about the challenges that some of them face. With that in mind, we take a closer look at the biggest of them all… The blue whale is the Largest animal ever, some specimens weighing in at a colossal 200 tonnes, although 100–150 tonnes is the average. Even dinosaurs didn’t reach that size – for instance, it’s nearly 20 times heavier than a T. rex! The blue whale can grow up to 30 m long – around the same as a Boeing 737. Found in all the world’s oceans except the polar regions, the blue whale travels thousands of miles every year, breeding in the tropics during the winter and swimming to more extreme latitudes to feed in summer. This also makes this species the Largest migrant in the animal kingdom. Perhaps surprisingly, this behemoth of the deep feeds mainly on some of the ocean’s smallest inhabitants: tiny crustaceans called krill that reach no longer than a few centimetres. It swallows them in great gulps of seawater before raising its tongue to its mouth, straining the briny liquid through baleen plates but retaining its prey. This unparalleled difference in size between predator and prey represents yet another natural record. Intensive whaling in the early 20th century devastated the world’s blue whale populations. But thankfully, since being designated a protected species in 1966 its numbers have started to rise again. With our continuing support, blue whales will be around for future generations to marvel at for many years to come. RECORD-BREAKING BLUE WHALE BIOLOGY 1. Each upper jaw features about 400 plates of bristlelike keratin called baleen, which traps the krill that the whale feeds on 2. Weighing in at 4 tonnes, it is the Heaviest tongue of any animal 3. The brain is proportionately tiny. It tips the scales at around 6 kg; for context, human brains weigh about 1.4 kg 4. That huge body demands a lot of oxygen, so little wonder that they also boast the Largest lungs, with a capacity of 5,000 litres 5. The Largest heart of any living creature weighs in at around 680 kg – about the size of a VW Beetle car! It beats just four to eight times a minute – the Slowest heart rate for a mammal 6. The tail flukes are 7.6 m wide – nearly as long as a London double-decker bus How big is the blue whale? • • • • • • • • • • • •

Given his name, this fish was destined to be a genius. And he more than lived up to his namesake. The calico fantail performed six tricks including passing through a hoop, swimming under a limbo bar and even scoring a goal. In 2005, he boasted the largest repertoire of tricks for a fish. He was trained by his owner Dean Pomerleau (USA) at the “Fish School” in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, USA. 6

Ten-year-old Curtis Buddie (USA) has snagged the record for the longest milk tooth. A milk tooth (or baby tooth) is defined as a deciduous tooth which falls out when the permanent teeth emerge, and Curt's baby tooth proved to be one for the record books. Curt's measured a whopping 2.4 cm, breaking the previous record of 2 cm set back in 2005, when it was removed on 17 January 2018. Curt's brother even referred to it as a "monster's tooth" when he first saw it. Curt's mother, Jessica, said her son was thrilled to become a record holder. "Curt is in the fifth grade, and this is about the most exciting thing that has happened all year for him and his classmates," she said. "To say this has been an exciting event for Curt and our family, would be an understatement." The tooth was removed by Dr. Scott Bossert at The Gentle Dentist in Columbus, Ohio, and staff equally excited about the record with a large crowd of dentists and hygienists circling the doctor during the measuring process. Curt attributes his record to his love for milk and allowing the tooth to grow and grow. 7

Kimberly Holland Antibacterial wipes are a time-crunched cleaner’s best friend—but here are an item you should never use them on. Children’s toys When you wipe a surface with an antibacterial wipe, you see a gratifying smudge of grime on the white rag. What you don’t see is what’s left behind—chemicals. “The major reason that I believe that people should not use antibacterial wipes as an everyday go-to wipe is that we are seeing an increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria,” says John Manolas, co-owner of Whyte Gate and chemist. “Some of the blame for this phenomenon goes to antibacterial soaps and wipes. Most surfaces will probably be equally germ-free after regular cleaning with soap and water or other household cleaners,” he says. Manolas also stresses that parents shouldn’t use the wipes on children’s toys because kids are likely to put the toys in their mouths.

Claire Nowak Flying is still considered the safest mode of transportation, but this pilot has a story that may make you reconsider that belief. “I almost collided with skydivers” I was still a student pilot at the time, and only my instructor and myself were on board. While I was doing a random session of instrument training, I had my blinder down. For those of you wondering, this literally means I cannot see out the windows and can only see down to my instrument panel. My instructor is giving me instructions, and I am to only rely on the instruments—which also means that he was my only eyes. So if, for any reason, he saw something he didn’t like, he’d say, “MY PLANE” and take control. Well, we’re flying along, and he’s having me perform various maneuvers with the blinders down, to teach me about trusting instruments. At one point, my blinder goggles slip down my nose a smidge, and I catch a quick glance out the side window. About 40 feet off of my wing was a skydiver with parachute open. I immediately whip my goggles off and scream, “Skydivers!” and my instructor had no idea. He was my only eyes during my maneuvers, and he had me fly right into the path of skydivers without knowing it. (There was a small grass strip nearby that sometimes had skydiving flights in the late summer). Thankfully, he quickly yanked the yoke and flew us out of the immediate area, but it still scared me. Needless to say, he was mortified afterward and kept telling me it “was an accident and he seriously didn’t see them.” I very well could have killed someone without even knowing it. Gives me the shudders every time I think about it.

“It’s a wonderful surprise to wake up and find a very unassuming woman who cares greatly for our community and its children,” said Susan Shi, PhD, founder and chair emerita of the Institute for Child Success, a recipient of $25,000. Southern’s wealth also came as a shock to most who knew her. She lived in a modest town house and got around Greenville in a gray 1980s-model Cadillac. Her money came from a few shares of stock left to her by her husband, who had died in 1983. She added to that through the ’80s, if only to feather a nest for others to use. “What’s exceptional is she didn’t spend it on herself, and she was able to accumulate a lot of money that she wanted to direct to her dearest charities,” Bob Morris, president of the Community Foundation, told the Greenville News. “I haven’t met a lot of people like that.” Did their generous natures help Southern and these other extraordinary givers live so long? It’s possible. Studies have found that people who are charitable, whether it’s via volunteering or donating money, tend to have lower blood pressure, less stress, and longer lives. One 2011 study even found that older volunteers had a lower risk of dying in a four-year period than non-volunteers. They certainly understood the importance of planning for the future. Careful, conservative investing—putting money in the stock market and leaving it there to grow—has always been the ticket to a comfortable retirement, and that’s how these working-class benefactors built their legacies. For instance, when Sylvia Bloom was a young legal secretary, part of her job was to keep track of her bosses’ stock purchases. She’d take note of which stocks the lawyers were buying and buy a few shares for herself. “She invested in the market and didn’t spend it,” says Lockshin. “She followed the rules.” Ronald Read was a blue-collar guy with blue-chip smarts. A gas station attendant and JCPenney janitor in Brattleboro, Vermont, he read the Wall Street Journal every day, following his investments in Ford, IBM, Procter & Gamble, and CVS Health. When he died in 2014 at age 92, he was worth $8 million. But while he had watched his money carefully, he rarely touched it. After one of his last meetings with his attorney, Laurie Rowell, she insisted on walking her frail client to his car. They proceeded up a steep hill, passing empty parking spots as they went. When they got to Read’s 2007 Toyota Yaris, Rowell realized why he had chosen that spot: There were no parking meters at the top of the hill. “You would have thought he was penniless if you met him,” she says. (In fact, Read didn’t even want his lawyer to walk with him to the car, because he thought she might charge him for the time.) Read’s frugality was sometimes mistaken for actual poverty. One morning, the man ahead of him in line for coffee noticed Read’s tattered clothes and promptly paid for his drink. He got his coffee that day, and most others, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, which served some of the best java in town. “That coffee shop was beloved by a number of people,” says Rowell. “They took good care of him.” When Read died, hospital officials were surprised that he had left the bulk of his estate, nearly $5 million, to the hospital. “Some of us knew he had some investments,” his stepson Phillip Brown told the Brattleboro Reformer, “but obviously he had a whole lot more that we didn’t know about.”

Stacey Feintuch We’ve all said something to our mate that we regret—but toxic phrases can harm a relationship to the point of irreparable damage. Don’t threaten divorce When you threaten divorce, you may regret it later. “It shows that you’re not truly committed to the marriage lasting forever, making your spouse feel rejected and preventing him from feeling safe loving you,” says Tracey Steinberg, a Dateologist® and author of Flirt For Fun & Meet THE One. But once it’s been said, the damage has been done to your marriage, even if it’s an idle threat. You’re telling your partner that you have one foot out the door. And it will eventually take its toll on him. “Divorce is never something to be expressed unless you’ve explored every avenue of making it work together,” says Antonia Hall, MA, a psychologist, relationship expert, and author of The Ultimate Guide to a Multi-Orgasmic Life. “Just the mention of it in jest can cause serious hurt and doubt in his mind and serious damage to the relationship.”

Important Information! It is surprisingly easy to gain access to the entire contents of someone else's phone, even remotely. Certain precautions go a long way to alleviate the risks. The worst thing one can possibly do is to leave bluetooth continuously on. Second worst is to leave wifi enabled and make use of so called "free" wifi hotspots, especially on android operating systems. Basically the more "open" your connections are the more you are at risk. The same counts for reacting on anything arriving unasked for, like whatsapp messages promising some or other enhancement. The attacks come in all manner of guises. If someone you have never seen before walked up to you in the street and asked to walk with you to somewhere unknown on the promise of giving you something great, would you do it? That is what those whatsapp messages are. If you want to know what the total safest option is, as one seasoned hacker has put it: An iphone with icloud, bluetooth and wifi disabled is a Fort Knox, impossible to get into. Everything else is just different degrees of difficulty. And one other thing, if someone has gained access to your contact list, they could easily have had access to EVERYTHING on your phone, including your username and password list for websites you sign into "securely". On android especially, whilst that platform allows users far greater freedom to far more sharing than on an iphone, it also comes with a risk, quite like it is rather nice not to have a fence around your home, but with added risks. A firewall and anti virus is a must, together with responsible behaviour. Leaving your phone unlocked or without PIN/Fingerprint/etc security unattended? Same as leaving a heap of cash notes there. 19
