GIANT MULTICOLOURED EASTER EGG TOWERS OVER BRAZILIAN TOWN By David Stubbings You definitely won't miss this Easter egg in the Brazilian town of Pomerode. VIDEO: https://youtu.be/r5savRs44T8

The multicoloured attraction is now the world’s largest decorated Easter Egg, standing 15.02 m tall and 8.72 m in diameter after 48 days of construction and decorating. The egg itself is made out of welded steel (not chocolate!), while the painted shell is made from a sandwich of foam and resin-impregnated canvas. Both the structure and the shell were built in four separate sections which were then fitted together for the official record attempt and unveiling on 9 March. The attempt was organised by the local tourism body, Associação Visite Pomerode, which wanted to create awareness of the town's festival, Osterfest, and to pay tribute to a local artist famous for her painted eggs. "Pomerode is a town colonized by German immigrants, who brought the tradition of painting eggshells for Easter," said association board member, Ivan Blumenschein. "Originally, this was done by cooking eggs with dyeing herbs in the water. "The artist Silvana Pujol, born in Pomerode, developed her very own style of painting eggshells (from hummingbirds to ostriches), and her work became iconic of eggshell painting - not only in Pomerode, but in the entire country and even abroad." Osterfest is an annual Easter festival in Pomerode which attracts more than 200,000 visitors during the five weeks it's on. As well as activities, workshops and shows, this year’s festival also includes the record-breaking egg which will be on display until May. "An eggshell painted by Silvana was chosen as a model to be recreated in a giant-size scale," continued Ivan. "The artist João Siqueira accepted the challenge to recreate her work in a 15-m egg. Siqueira is specialized in creating large scale sculptures, such as the ones used in Brazilian Carnival." This is not the first time the Pomerode festival has broken a record. In 2017, organisers achieved the largest Easter egg tree with 82,404 decorated eggs hanging from it. 2

Lauren Cahn The first selfie: In 1939, more than 120 years after the first photograph ever was taken, Robert Cornelius set up a camera in the back of his family’s store and took what’s believed to be the very first photographic self-portrait ever. What’s astounding is how long it took for someone to take that first “selfie.” One thing is for sure— he nailed his lighting, and so did the takers of other historical selfies.

A woman from the Pacific NorthWest lived to the ripe old age of 99 - despite her organs all being located in the wrong place. What’s more, Rose Marie Bentley never knew anything was amiss. When Ms Bentley died in 2017, her body was donated to research, as had been that of her husband, Jim, a dozen years earlier. But when students from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) used the elderly lady’s cadaver to experiment with as part of a routine anatomy class, they discovered she was anything but normal. Indeed, they found she had suffered from the very rare condition of situs inversus. This arrangement, present in just one in fifty million adults, leaves people with their liver, stomach and other abdominal organs transposed right to left. In Ms Bentley’s case, her heart remained on the left side of her chest. “I knew something was up, but it took us a while to figure out how she was put together,” Cam Walker, an assistant professor of anatomy in the OHSU anatomical services centre, said in a statement released on Monday.

Warren Nielsen, a second-year medical student from Lake Oswego, Oregon, was one of many OHSU students who worked with Ms Bentley’s remains. “It was quite amazing,” he said. “We were able to not only learn normal anatomy but also all the anatomic variation that can occur. I grew to appreciate how she was able to live as long as she did. It made me wonder who she was. The experience has me looking forward to caring for patients and being able to apply what I’ve learned from her.” Ms Bentley and her husband had five children and ran a farm and pet supply store in the town of Molalla. She taught Sunday school and sang choir at their United Methodist Church, According to reports, she and her husband decided to donate their remains for scientific research after reading a poem by Robert Test. It opens with the line: “Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby’s face, or love in the eyes of a woman.” Her children said she would have been laughed out loud to learn she was a medical rarity. Louise Allee said her mother would love all the belated attention. “My mom would think this was so cool,” she said. “She would be tickled pink that she could teach something like this. She would probably get a big smile on her face, knowing that she was different, but made it through.” 6

Teresa Dumain Confession: What your body really needs for better health, nutrition, sleep, pain relief, and more. Please don’t look down at your phone. Would you hang four bowling balls from my neck? Before you say that’s a stupid question, consider this: Sixty pounds (or about the combined weight of those balls) is the same amount of force exerted when you tilt your head forward at about a 60-degree angle to text or email from your smartphone.

And you do that for up to four hours (hours!) a day. For the love and integrity of my cervical spine, raise that phone up to your sight line.

Jane Donohue While living with someone who has autism may have plenty of challenges, overall, the experience can be an absolute gift. Growing up with a brother who is on the autism spectrum meant a lot of compromises. My brother is high-functioning, but there were still a lot of things we had to do to adapt. Though we felt like it at times, we weren’t alone: According to the Autism Society, the disorder occurs in one in every 59 births in the United States. Autism can impact a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others, as well as their fine motor skills, coordination, and even their basic senses in some cases. As a child, I had to make concessions for my brother’s condition, and there were more than a few situations that led me to say “that’s not fair!” or “you would never let me get away with that.” But, as we all grew and evolved, I realized I had to help the family work as a cohesive unit—and this continues to be the main priority for everyone in my family. There will be tantrums This was especially true when my brother was young: The tantrums usually came out of a misunderstanding or a breakdown in communication—a common issue for people on the autism spectrum. They cannot always communicate what they are feeling, and the frustration can lead to tantrums. But as we got better at communicating as a family, the tantrums lessened until, eventually, they stopped completely. Respect the routine Something my family learned is that routine equals comfort, and maintaining routines around the house helped my brother get through his day. When we had to shift the routine, we just needed to do so with plenty of warning, careful planning, and clear communication. Read the signs Even as my communication with my brother improved, I could still hit a point when he wouldn’t be able to comprehend exactly what I was saying. If he failed to respond or came back with something completely off-topic, it was my cue to stop pushing or risk that he might get angry or completely shut down. Keep social life simple Like a lot of people on the autism spectrum, my brother is very smart. But he understands life in a completely different—yet fascinating—way. Despite his intelligence, like many people on the spectrum he has a hard time reading social cues and can find social situations challenging. In this case, my family has learned to slow down his interactions with others, keep things simple, and allow him breaks when he’s feeling overwhelmed. They will attain goals I grew up trying to hit goals. Career goals. Life goals. Relationship goals. Money goals. And I was acutely aware of when society felt I should reach those benchmarks. My brother may not hit those goals when he “should,” but he is attaining them—when he’s ready. Make time for downtime We all need time to recharge and decompress, but my brother thrives on spending a ton of time alone, something that can be true of people on the spectrum. While at times I felt like it might be a good idea for him to be more social, I realized that even family dinner demanded a lot from him, and he would need downtime afterward. There will be so much love I’m constantly thankful for all the love I feel and receive from my brother—even if he doesn’t show it in a traditional way. I’m able to see from his behavior and small gestures how much he appreciates me. I admire him, too, for all of the amazing things he can see that I can’t.’ 12

New studies show a shocking 25 percent of people with type 2 diabetes don’t even know it. If you experience some of these subtle diabetes symptoms and signs, talk to your doctor about getting tested. “It’s not like you wake up one day and all of a sudden you’re thirsty, hungry, and [going to the bathroom] all the time,” says Melissa Joy Dobbins, RD, a certified diabetes educator in Illinois and a spokesperson for the American Association of Diabetes Educators. “It picks up gradually.” Indeed, “most people are unaware that they have diabetes in its early or even middle phases,” says Aaron Cypess, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and staff physician at Joslin Diabetes Center. Just because you’re not keyed in doesn’t mean you’re immune from problems associated with diabetes, he adds. The longer you go without controlling diabetes, the greater your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, amputation, blindness, and other serious complications. “We recommend that people with risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history or being overweight, get evaluated on a regular basis,” Dr. Cypess says. If you’ve been feeling off, talk to your doctor about getting a simple blood test that can diagnose the disease.
