WHY THE CASSOWARY IS THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS BIRD By Adam Millward Friday (12 April 2019), a 75-year-old man was attacked by (at least) one of the exotic birds that he rears on his property in Florida, USA. His injuries were so severe that he later died in hospital. The exotic birds in question weren't parrots or canaries, however… Along with animals such as alligators and wild cats, cassowaries are listed as Class II wildlife in Florida, owing to the risk that they pose. This means an owner must satisfy a number of tests and acquire a special permit from the local authorities to legally keep them. So what exactly is a cassowary? Like their cousins the emus, these large, flightless birds with bristly feathers are ratites. They are native to the tropical forests of south-east Asia and Australia. Though size varies across the three different species (see end of article), cassowaries can stand up to 2 m tall and weigh as much as 60 kg – the equivalent of six mute swans, which are the heftiest birds native to the UK. Cassowaries are certainly striking to look at, with a vivid blue face, two red wattles (flaps of skin) hanging from their neck and a hollow "helmet", known as a casque, atop their heads. The anatomy that makes them so dangerous lies lower down. Muscular legs that can pack a powerful kick terminate with three claw-tipped toes. The claw on the inner toe is particularly formidable, reaching lengths of 12 cm! If a cassowary feels threatened, it will leap up and strike out with these dagger-like weapons, inflicting potentially lethal wounds to internal organs and causing severe bleeding. Although this avian family are widely considered the most dangerous birds, this is the first confirmed human death attributed to a cassowary in 93 years. The last-known victim was 16-year-old hunter Phillip McClean, who tripped while fleeing from a bird in Australia in April 1926. It was when McClean was on the ground that he received a fatal blow to the neck. In terms of dangerous animals, you are far more likely to fall foul of a snake bite or even an infection transmitted by dogs – "man’s best friend" – than you are these birds – even if there's something particularly Velociraptor-like about their appearance. In fact, the deadliest animals of them all are no bigger than your thumbnail. While cassowaries are certainly equipped to kill, they do not seek out trouble. Quite the contrary: like most animals, these birds would much rather avoid conflict, only choosing fight over "flight" as a last resort if they feel their lives – or those of their young – are endangered. What's concerning is that the dense rainforest habitat favoured by cassowaries – particularly on the north-eastern coast of Australia – is being diminished by property developers, conversion into farmland and the encroachment of associated infrastructure such as roads and fences. This can only result in more humancassowary encounters going forward. This is far worse for these birds than it is for humans, as many are killed by vehicles and dogs every year. There are already certain coastal resorts, such as Queensland's Mission Beach and Moresby Range, where cassowaries are becoming a regular sight, wandering past sunbathers and even into local residents' gardens. So what should you do if you meet a cassowary in the wild (or indeed on your property)? Environmental organization Rainforest Rescue, which set up the Save the Cassowary campaign in response to the decline of southern cassowaries in Australia, has issued some top tips to protect both people and the birds from harm. What to do if you encounter a cassowary: Do not feed cassowaries or leave out litter that the birds can easily access. This only encourages them to approach people and danger zones such as busy roads. If travelling to an area where cassowaries are known to live, consider leaving your dog at home, or at least keeping your pet on a leash. Dogs are a big threat to young cassowaries and can also stress out adults, leading to aggression. Keep your distance – particularly if an adult is guarding eggs or with chicks. If a cassowary does start acting belligerently, back away slowly or take cover behind trees or shrubs. Do NOT run, as these birds can outsprint us. If you're wearing a backpack or bag, move it to your front in order to shield your chest. Cassowary spotters' guide: There are three species of cassowary, all of which are native to Australasia. These birds are potentially dangerous and should be treated with caution and respect, should you encounter one in the wild. Southern cassowary Height: 1.5–2 m Location: Indonesia, New Guinea, north-east Australia Northern cassowary Height: 1.5–1.8 m Location: New Guinea, Indonesia Dwarf cassowary Height: 1–1.3 m Location: New Guinea, Indonesia 2
I'm okay, but I'm not okay, and that's okay! Eat a piece of dark chocolate several times a week Believe it or not, several small studies suggest dark chocolate could be good for your heart! The beneficial effects are likely due to chemicals in chocolate called flavonoids, which help arteries stay flexible. Other properties of the sweet stuff seem to make arteries less likely to clot and prevent the “bad cholesterol, LDL, from oxidizing, making it less likely to form plaque.
Dark chocolate is also rich in magnesium and fiber. But steer clear of milk chocolate, which is high in butterfat and thus tends to raise cholesterol. 5
Bubble wrap was originally designed to be used as wallpaper. Bubble Wrap was invented by two engineers Al Fielding and Swiss inventor Marc Chavannes in Hawthorne, N.J. in 1957. The two were not, however, trying to make a product to be used as packaging material. Rather, they were trying to create a textured wallpaper. They started out by sealing two shower curtains together in such a way that it would capture air bubbles which would make the textured appearance for their wallpaper. Needless to say, this wallpaper idea didn’t sell too well.
Not to be deterred, they then set about finding another use for their product. The alternate use they came up with was to use it as greenhouse insulation. While bubble wrap by itself does create somewhat of an insulating effect, this idea didn’t pan out popularly either. It was three years after the initial creation of Bubble Wrap that Frederick W. Bowers, a marketer at Sealed Air, which makes Bubble Wrap, finally came up with the perfect use for their product. On October the 5, 1959, IBM announced their new 1401 variable word length computer. Bowers got the idea that Bubble Wrap could be used as a good packaging material to protect the computer while it was being shipped. He then pitched the idea to IBM and demonstrated Bubble Wrap’s protective abilities. His demonstration went over well and IBM began purchasing Bubble Wrap to protect their 1401 and other fragile product they sold and shipped. 6
Save time prepping food and make cooking easier with this cooking hack that is pure genius. Use an empty water bottle to separate egg whites and yolks. Crack an egg into a shallow bowl, then hold the mouth of the bottle near the yolk and gently squeeze. When you release the squeeze, the yolk will be sucked out, and you can deposit it into another bowl. 7

Michelle Crouch Find out about life in space—who knows, one day you might be able to actually visit! Being in space helps your skin On the bright side, after about a month in space, big chunks of skin (calluses) fall off your feet, leaving them as soft as a baby’s. Could space travel be a mini fountain of youth? When researchers looked at astronaut Scott Kelly’s DNA, they found that the ends of his chromosomes got longer during his 340 days in space. That was surprising because they usually shorten as we age. “More research is needed, of course, but it certainly cracks open the question of whether spending time in space could reverse the aging process,” says Colorado State University’s Susan Bailey, PhD, who conducted the research. Whether that feat could be accomplished is definitely one of the most baffling mysteries about the universe 8

Cheese and pizza lovers rejoice! The classic cheese pizza has been taken to a new level after the creation of a pizza topped with 154 varieties. Johnny Di Francesco (Australia) at 400 Gradi restaurant in Melbourne, wanted to get a pizza the action after he saw the news about our previous record holder for greatest variety of cheese on a pizza. The record previously stood at 111, but Johnny felt he could beat it as he had previously created the 99-cheese pizza. His inspiration for this creation came from the 2014 film The Mutant Ninja Turtles, in which one of the characters, Donatello, refer to a pizza topped with 99 different cheeses as a "culinary impossibility". However, Johnny disabried, and decided to tackle the task. After the 99-cheese pizza was successfully created, it was added to the 400 Gradi menu. "We had an overwhelming response from our customers, so much so that they petitioned to have it a permanent menu item," explained Johnny. "Since then we decided to up the ante and create a 154-cheese pizza. So my apologies Donatello, culinary impossibility debunked!" So from their 99-cheese pizza, they were determined to top the record of 111 and ended up with a final total of 154. "While the 154-cheese pizza may not have been a culinary impossibility, it was certainly a culinary challenge! We knew it was an ambitious idea, but probably more-so than first anticipated." "We also needed to be sure each individual cheese was distinct enough from the next, yet complimentary to each flavour, and could blend really well together once combined." "The cheeses included the likes of gorgonzola, pecorino, Taleggio, aged cheddar, gouda and of course, many more!" After the initial pizza was made – with just a gram of each type of cheese – 400 Gradi then rolled them out to their different restaurant venues in Australia. To be able to do this, the remaining cheese was melted down together and chilled into a single big block of 154 cheeses which was then distributed. But how did the patrons react to the cheese-tastic pizza? "There are too many to recall but overall, incredibly positive," Johnny added. "Many were completely overwhelmed and in awe of course; watching my customers' facial expressions as they took their first bite into a slice of cheesy goodness – well, that reaction is priceless." It seems it was a hit with customers as the "Cheesy Pizza" sold out of venues within five days, with a total of 797 sold. 11
Joe McKinley When it comes to forecasting the future, sometimes the experts really miss the mark. Check out this not-so -accurate predictions for the world of tomorrow. Cars are just a fad In 1903, the president of Michigan Savings Bank warned Henry Ford’s lawyer Horace Rackham to protect his money. “The horse is here to stay but the automobile is only a novelty—a fad,” he advised. If you’ve ever been stuck trying to get out of a parking lot after a sporting event, you probably wish he got this one right.
