WATCH THE WORLD’S FASTEST TUK-TUK REACH ITS RECORD-BREAKING 119 KM/H By Connie Suggitt VIDEO: https://youtu.be/Y_v4aKTBcVc A Thai tuk-tuk has sped its way into the record books after achieving a recordbreaking speed of 119.584 km/h. Matt Everard and Russell Shearman (both UK), set the record for the fastest autorickshaw/tuk-tuk (prototype) at Elvington airfield in North Yorkshire, UK on Monday 13 May. But how did the record-breaking feat come about? We're all guilty of making an impulse online buy now and again but Matt, from Billericay in Essex, took this one step further. He was browsing eBay one evening and ended up purchasing a Thai tuk-tuk. Matt then embarked on the mission of not just owning any old tuk-tuk, but the world’s fastest tuk-tuk and started making the necessary modifications which added up to £20,000. Built in 1971, the three-wheeled vehicle had its original two-stroke 350cc motor removed and replaced with a 1300cc fuel-injection engine. "We removed the boot or the tail gate of it, to let the air go through, so it didn’t act as an airbrake," Matt explained. In order to achieve the record, the tuk-tuk needed a passenger – which is where his cousin Russell came in. "He was tucked in behind us, looking at aerodynamics and stuff like that," Matt said. They also had Adjudicator Pravin Patel on hand, who explained the guidelines and the requirements of the attempt in full. Travelling in a three wheeled contraption going at 119 km/h may seem frightening to some, but for adrenaline junkie Russell it was a walk in the park. "I skydive most weekends, so it [the tuk-tuk] was quite slow!" Russell joked. "It was really good. There was a bit of a wobble going on when we built up speed but it felt quite safe so it wasn’t too bad at all."
Ahead of the record attempt Matt had just one practice run – without a passenger. "I've only driven it once by myself and I got it up to about 80 mph, so obviously we weren’t sure because of the extra weight, because of Russell." Though there was no current record holder for this title, Matt needed to beat a minimum time of 110 km/h Despite not knowing how a passenger would affect its speed, Matt wasn't nervous ahead of the attempt. "I was excited, not nervous. We knew it had it in it, it was just a case of how fast it was going to go, which way the wind was going to go and those kinds of things." Following the record-breaking run, Matt and Russell are keen to increase the speed even more. "It's been a really good experience… we want to come back and try it all over again. We've got plans for maybe a nitrus kit which will bring the power up. We’d really like to go for it and see what we can do." For now however, Matt and Russell want to kick back and enjoy their new record. "We’re just really excited, really happy. We want to go and open a bottle of champagne!" 2
INGREDIENTS: • 1 medium-large butternut squash • 250 ml cream • 1 packet dried brown onion soup • 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs (optional) • Lightly grease a large, shallow ovenproof dish and pre-heat the oven to 190°C. It’s up to you whether or not to peel the squash. The cooking is so long and slow that even if you leave it unpeeled, the skin gets to be soft enough to eat. If you plan to leave it unpeeled, though, do give it a thorough scrub. METHOD: Slice the squash into 1cm thick rounds, scooping out the seeds. Slice each round in half. Start by placing a layer of squash slices on the bottom of the greased dish. Pour over some of the cream and then sprinkle liberally with the brown onion soup. Repeat, making layers of squash, cream and soup until all ingredients are used up. If you want a crispy crust, cover the top with the breadcrumbs. Cover the dish with aluminium foil and bake in the pre-heated oven for 60-90 minutes or until the squash is meltingly soft. Remove the foil about halfway through and turn on the grill for the final few minutes if you want a browned and crispy top. Recipe and photo posted by Shannie Benn Hedenskog 4

Ashley Lewis SILHOUETTE: Before there were selfies, painted or paper cutout, silhouettes were the most affordable portraits that adorned people’s homes during the 18th century. Many people loved their silhouette selfies, but the man for who they were named after was anything but loved. France’s finance minister at the time, Étienne de Silhouette, had a reputation for being a frugal French man and was often seen making the cut-paper shadow portraits, himself, in his free time. Because of his cheap ways and favorite hobby, the French phrase “à la Silhouette“ came to mean “on the cheap” and the shadow portraits were named after Silhouette to poke fun at him as well. 6

A heartless YouTube prankster has been jailed for tricking a homeless man into eating Oreo biscuits filled with toothpaste, causing him to vomit minutes later. Kanghua Ren, better known by his YouTube name ReSet, has been handed a 15-month prison sentence and told to pay £17,682 in compensation for his cruel act in Barcelona, Spain. He was found guilty of 'violating the moral integrity' of the man, although it is unlikely he will spend a day behind bars due to Spain's lenient laws for first-time offenders. However, Ren's YouTube and social media accounts will likely close down after a Barcelona court ordered they be shut for five years. In his YouTube video of the 'prank', Ren can be seen scraping off the creamy white filling of an Oreo and smearing toothpaste between the two chocolate-y biscuits. The 20-year-old then places several of the snacks back inside the packet. Later on in the clip you see him walking down a street in Barcelona. He stops and starts talking to a homeless man - called Gheorge L - sat outside a building and after giving him some money he also gives him the biscuits. Gheorge can be seen clasping his hands together in gratitude and saying thank you to the vlogger. But after eating the snacks the 52-year-old from Romania said he instantly felt sick and vomited five minutes later. He also said he feared for his life as he did not know ReSet or what was in the food. But it appeared Ren did not feel guilty about the prank. He joked: "Maybe I've gone a bit far, but look at the positive side: This will help him clean his teeth. "I think he hasn't cleaned them since he became poor." The incident happened in January last year and caused outrage. Court documents seen by Spanish newspaper El Pais showed the YouTuber managed to earn £1,730 through advertising on his channel and has more than a million subscribers. After the original video, ReSet went to visit the man again and made another video to ask how he liked the Oreos. He said: "People exaggerate over jokes in the street played on a beggar, when surely if it's done to a normal person they wouldn't say anything." He also planned to spend a night on the street with the homeless Romanian but the police were called by a witness. Prosecutors said ReSet later deleted the clips and offered the man £265 for his silence in an attempt to "re-establish his image" and "ingratiate himself with public opinion". Gheorge said he had never been treated so badly in all the time he has been on the streets. The court heard ReSet has also previously offered sandwiches filled with cat poo to children and elderly people.

My students have all the answers! Teacher: What is an evangelist? Student: Someone who plays the evangelo. Teacher: Why can’t freshwater fish live in salt water? Student: The salt would give them high blood pressure. Teacher: Mira went to the library at 5:15 and left at 6:45. How long was Mira at the library? Student: Not long. Teacher: What do we call a group of stars that makes an imaginary picture in the sky? Student: A consternation. Teacher: List up to five good facts about Abraham Lincoln. Student: After the war ended, Lincoln took his wife to a show.

Molly Pennington When American movies travel abroad, their titles can get a little lost in translation. A Very Powerful Whale Runs to Heaven. The beloved tearjerker Free Willy is known for its happy ending. The Chinese saw things differently, giving the movie the above title instead. Then again, Willy did jump (not run) to the metaphorical heaven of the open ocean.

You probably know what it means, but can you answer the question, “What does RSVP stand for?” If you’ve ever hosted a big event like a wedding or 50th birthday party, you know how important getting RSVPs from all your guests is. It determines how much food you’ll need to order, how many tables and chairs you’ll need, and how to set up the seating chart so your bickering aunts aren’t right next to each other. Getting those little checked off note cards back is a pretty big deal. What does RSVP stand for? RSVP is actually a French expression meaning répondez s’il vous plait. That translates to “please respond.” If you ever get an invitation in the mail that includes a request for you to RSVP, it means that the host of the event is asking for you to let them know whether or not you will be able to attend. Why you should always RSVP Typical RSVPs come with a stamped and addressed envelope as well as a card for you to record your response on. But more and more RSVPs are being sent through the web and allow you to respond with one click. Many people don’t RSVP as “unable to attend” because they don’t want to hurt the host’s feelings. An unanswered RSVP usually ends up being more of an inconvenience than a simple “no” would have been. Others don’t send RSVPs because they aren’t sure if they’ll be available on that date and don’t want to commit to an answer. In the end, it’s always best to be honest with the host about your plans—having some kind of answer is better than nothing. RSVP vs. Regrets Only Some RSVP cards say “Regrets Only” on them. If you see that, it means you only have to send a response if you can’t attend. Don’t send the RSVP card back if you can attend—even if you want to show your excitement about the event—because that may confuse the host. Contact them a different way to show your enthusiasm. Now that you can answer the question, “What does RSVP stand for?”.
