FREE DIVER ANT WILLIAMS HOLDS HIS BREATH AS HE PLUNGES 70 M UNDER ICE IN DARING RECORD By Daniel Kidane VIDEO: https://youtu.be/Yp3TxJj12GA
In an incredible display of human endeavor, New Zealander Anthony Williams overcame extreme freeze and murky depths to achieve the deepest dive under ice – breath held (fins and diving suit) by a male. On 27 March 2019 Anthony plunged into a frozen fjord in Kirkenes, Norway, achieving an amazing depth of 70.3 m. The dive, which lasted 2 minutes 29 seconds, saw him push through the pitch-black abyss on a single breath. The risky pursuit of freediving under ice is fraught with physical and mental challenges overcoming the body's natural reaction to panic and controlling bodily tension throughout the dive, were just some of the issues We caught up with Anthony and ask him a few questions about his passion for freediving under ice. Anthony had to conquer. How did you get into such an activity? I began freediving whilst I was working as a Sport Psychologist in France. All of my athletes were performing in dangerous sports like base jumping, MotoGP racing and big wave surfing. I thought I should learn a dangerous sport to better understand what my athletes go through. Why have you gone for this particular record? I wanted to go out to the edge of this extreme sport to see what I could learn. It's when you test the limits of the sport that you learn new techniques and begin to innovate. What challenges have you overcome in preparing for this attempt? The challenges we overcome have been numerous. But my biggest challenge has been coping with the incredible discomfort and darkness of diving under the ice. The frigid water cuts through your wetsuit and stings your face. As you sink down it is remarkably difficult to relax as you drop in to the pitch black darkness all alone. How do you train for this attempt? I trained for this event by diving deep in the ocean twice a week for four months. To get used to the cold I took cold showers every day and spent a week on the ice in Finland where I dived under the ice each day.
What goes through your mind as you descend in to darkness? As I dive it is critical to control my mind and overcome the fear of sinking alone in deep, dark water. As the water pressure mounts, I tell myself to 'let go' and enjoy the dive. Then I focus very inwardly on my relaxation and my techniques to equalize as I approach the deepest stage of the dive. 2
So ’n kordate muis. My God is so groot, so sterk en so magtig, daar’s niks wat my God nie kan doen. My God is so groot, so sterk en so magtig, daar's niks wat my God nie kan doen! By Hom is daardie probleempie net so groot soos die muis vir die olifant is. Mag jy God se beskerming rondom jou voel. - Dink bietjie hieroor Hoe groot is jou probleem? Hoe groot is jou planne? Ek kom skuil nou by U, want U sal my help. Al die pad. Amen. Shalom. Gerjo Ben 3
DID YOU KNOW SANTA CLAUS WAS GIVEN AN OFFICIAL PILOT’S LICENSE IN 1927? When Santa Claus makes his trip around the world on Christmas Eve, you can rest assured that he’s legally allowed to drive his sleigh—at least in the United States. In 1927, the jolly man in the red suit was given a pilot’s license from the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics William P. MacCracken. According to the Library of Congress, “The old saint called at the Commerce Department in Washington” and when he arrived, his picture was taken as he was given his license, airway maps, “and the assurance that the lights would be burning on the airways on Christmas Eve.” 4

Dit is n heerlike bygereg by braaie of sommer net vir so eet.

A Welsh musician has recently broken the record for the lowest vocal note (female). Helen Leahey, the aptly named ‘Bass Queen’, sang from a D5 to a D2 note at an incredibly deep 72.5 hertz(es) in her attempt at the Music School Wagner in Koblenz, Germany. Helen, originally from St Asaph in Wales but now living in Germany, has recently returned to singing after the birth of her first child. The record to beat was a musical note E2 at 82.4 hertz(es). "I have been encouraged for some years to pursue a musical career professionally, in part because of my unique voice," Helen explained. "Everywhere I sing, I hear that nobody has heard a woman who can hit the low notes like me. I guess I wanted to see how unique my voice truly is. "As a child I was obsessed with Guinness World Records books and thought it would be wonderful if I could be part of the record-breaking family!"
Helen’s record attempt spanned 10 minutes, as she worked towards the lowest note she could. "After some warming up I managed to sing from note D5 (three octaves above) to D2 on the piano, the lowest note being 72.5 Hertz." During her attempt, Helen had eight industry professionals present, including qualified music teachers and sound engineers. Her witnesses were Tatjana Botow, a singing teacher, and Elmar Wald, a sound engineer. For the attempt, a RODE NTI-A microphone was used, with a MOTU Traveller audio interface. The frequency was monitored by Faber Acoustical Signal Scope (3.8.6 Build 19 O) software on a Mac computer. A D5 Blüthner Grand Piano was used as a reference tone for Helen’s attempt. After a couple of attempts, sound engineer Tobias Jacobs confirmed Helen had achieved the record-breaking low note. "My witnesses confirmed that the record had been broken, and we had a little celebration." Helen’s naturally deep voice has helped define and shape her music career, as has Celtic roots. In her songs, many instruments can be heard, including the guitar, Irish bouzouki, harmonica and the Irish drum (Bodhrán). "When I play music, there is no filter, nothing, nowhere, where I can hide. Singing my own songs in front of an audience is incredibly humbling and intimate," Helen says on her website. "One day people are supposed to sing my songs without knowing who wrote them. Only then have they proven themselves over the years and shown that they are about truth and sincerity." With a voice as resonant and unique as Helen’s, we’re sure her music will spread far and wide.

One day when Steve Gamlin was almost 40 years old, he wrote six words down in his journal. They were, “I am ready to find her.” This was after his divorce and after he left his 10-year radio career. He’d spent the past four years starting a new career as a motivational speaker. Ten days after his journal entry, he got an e-mail from someone named Tina. Mistaken it as spam, he almost deleted it but soon realized it was Tina Wojdyla, a former classmate from high school who found him on Classmates.com. Steve admits he had a crush on Tina in high school but wasn’t brave enough to ask her out. “I sent a message back, to which she replied, ‘Hey, we should keep in touch.’ My thoughts at the time were, sarcastically, ‘Yeah, sure…one message in 21 years. What are the odds we’ll actually stay in touch?’ She e-mailed me with her phone number. Several days later I called. We spent the next four weeks calling, texting, and e-mailing one another questions about our life paths. I remembered how I felt about her in school, and the feelings all came back. Four weeks later, she bravely admitted she’d felt the same way back in school, and still did. She wouldn’t send me a picture of herself, which was the most beautiful gift. I got to fall in love with Tina with my eyes closed and heart wide open. In mid-July, she had to come back to New England to visit her grandmother in the hospital, and I got to see her for the first time in over 20 years. When I met her at the airport we knew we’d be together for the rest of our lives. The following January, she moved back to New England. We’ve been together ever since.”

Juliana LaBianca Traveling is stressful as it is, so let’s not add the burden of getting sick from the flight to your itinerary. Experts reveal where the germs are hiding and how to stay healthy and comfortable while airborne. Don’t eat food after it’s fallen on the tray table Yuck! That tray table doesn’t get sterilized between flights, so unless you’ve brought your own disinfectant or placemat, let that cookie crumb go if it hits the tray and not your plate. “The tray table is notorious,” said Stephen Morse, professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Ferguson adds that tray tables are usually only wiped down once a day, when the plane goes into an overnight station. “Those tray tables are used for all kinds of things,” said Ferguson. “During flights, I’ve seen parents changing babies on top of tray tables. I’ve seen people put their bare feet on top of tray tables.” One study found that trays harbor an average of 2,155 colony-forming units of bacteria per square inch. Compare that with the 265 units on the lavatory flush button. And while all samples tested negative for potentially infectious bacteria such as E. coli, you’ll still want to steer clear of that tray. Don’t be that person:

The next time you’re driving in winter, you may notice an odd dashboard light that looks like a road with a snowflake on it. A Five-Year-Old Died from Cancer—But Not Before Writing an Unforgettable Obituary Makayla Tendall In September 2017, fouryear-old Garrett Michael Matthias was diagnosed with a rare cancer. For ten months, he endured brutal chemo-therapy and radiation for embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, but he never lost his sense of humor. People who said goodbye to him with “See you later, alligator” were often taken aback by Garrett’s standard response: “See ya later!”
When his parents, Ryan and Emilie Matthias, found out he was terminal, they started writing down his thoughts on life and death. Garrett died on July 6, 2018. Five days later, the Des Moines Register ran the family’s unusual paid obituary, which was written almost entirely in Garrett’s own words and is featured below. His words will make you laugh, cry, or maybe even both. Garrett did have a Viking funeral, complete with snow cones and bouncy houses. His story has inspired a children’s book called Dirty, Stupid, Cancer!

Marissa Laliberte Used items can be the same great quality at a fraction of the price. There’s a good chance exercise equipment like treadmills, ellipticals, and dumbbells, are still in good condition. “Many people buy these items with the intentions of starting a regimen but fall off quickly and then try to unload these bulky goods that take up too much room,” says consumer and money-saving expert Andrea Woroch. Just make sure to research the brand and test the equipment before you buy, she says. In addition to the usual spots like Craigslist and garage sales, a local gym that’s getting renovated might be selling old equipment at killer prices, says Woroch. 12
DID YOU KNOW EINSTEIN’S BRAIN WAS STOLEN WHEN HE DIED? When Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein passed away on April 18, 1955, he left behind specific instructions when it came to the disposal of his body, according to one National Geographic investigation. Einstein didn’t want his corpse to be worshiped or his brain to be studied, so he instructed those who were responsible for his remains to “cremate them, and scatter the ashes secretly in order to discourage idolaters.” 13
Beth Dreher The man with the photographic memory All it took for British artist Stephen Wiltshire to memorize and draw intricate details of the Tokyo, Rome, Hong Kong, Dubai, and New York City skylines was a brief helicopter ride over each city. Wiltshire, who is autistic and didn’t speak until age five (his first two words were “paper” and “pen”), has a highly-developed photographic memory—in his panoramic drawing of Rome, he recreated the exact number of columns of the Pantheon. 14

DIY FLAMINGO TISSUE POM GARLAND
18
SUPPLIES NEEDED • 6 Pink Tissue Pom Poms (I used two different shades of pink and varying sizes of poms but you can do however you wish) • Thick Pink Cardstock (I chose contrasting pink for the head but your shade can match as well) • Scissors • Hot Glue Gun • Twine WHAT TO DO: • First you have to cut out your flamingo heads out of cardstock using the template or creating your own. Feel free to add eyes, eyelashes and a smile like the template shows or leave it more simple. I only added one head per tissue pom however if you need your garland to be viewable from both sides you will want to make two per tissue pom and glue them together. • Now you have to begin unfolding all of the sections of your tissue, very carefully separating each layer until all layers have been separated. • Your pom should be taking the form of a ball by now but you have to further scrunch and fluff the tissue to create an overall “ball” look. • Warm your hot glue gun and then locate the hanging string on your tissue pom. You have to glue your flamingo head right in the center of the pom that way when you hold the string the head is still upright. Be sure to bury the base as deep as possible in the tissue and glue 3/4 the way up the neck of the flamingo so that the head stays upright and doesn’t droop to the side. You may need to make your base a little shorter (and possibly wider) than the one in the template for smaller tissue poms. You can make it shorter simply by cutting or folding. • Once you have secured the front side, be sure to glue up along the back side as well to again add more stability. Before doing this, be sure to check again that when you lift the pom by the string that the flamingo head is still in the center. If this is not the case quickly re-glue the front side before moving on to the back. • Now that you have the flamingo head fully glued, take the string and tie a hanging loop on it, the closer to the base this loop is, the more secure it will be. This loop you will then use to slide the pom into your twine. • Repeat these steps with as many flamingos as you are making, keeping in mind that the more you add, the heavier your garland will be and the more sturdy options it will require for hanging. • Once you have assembled all tissue poms you will then string them along the twine. It’s easiest to do this on the floor due to the size of the poms. Once on the twine, arrange and space out the poms to the exact spots you want them and then hot glue the loops closed onto the twine to keep them in place and prevent sliding and bunching. • Have fun and enjoy your flamingle!

Ashley Lewis If you want to keep your professional relationships happy and healthy, never utter these words. What not to say to your boss Don’t count on that raise or promotion if you start saying things like “that’s not in my job description.” Negativity gets you nowhere fast in your career. A task that is outside of your realm of daily duties could be a valuable opportunity to show your boss some versatility in your skills. It could even mean that your boss believes in you enough to take on a new challenge, which is the greatest form of flattery. Even saying things like, “no, I don’t have time to,” can reflect poorly on your work ethic. If you’re afraid of spreading yourself too thin, ask your boss to help you find ways to manage your time more wisely. The simple step of taking initiative to make things work shows your boss that you’re a team player with a “can-do” attitude.

ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL BITES YOU CAN GET Lela Nargi
Mosquito A mosquito takes a bite so small you might not even notice it. Which is why it’s incredible that experts consider this insect to be the world’s deadliest animal. That’s because its bite can transmit a variety of dangerous diseases to humans: More than 400,000 people die every year of malaria alone, according to the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. But as the World Health Organization points out, the pests also deliver chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and Zika virus. The suffering these insects inflict with their bites has devastating effects on millions of people worldwide. 24
