AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BIGGEST CROCODILE EVER THAT MAKES TODAY'S CROCS LOOK TINY By Adam Millward Anyone who’s ever seen a Steve Irwin show or any Australian nature documentary will know that saltwater crocodiles are big beasts. Indeed, they’re the heaviest reptiles on the planet today, reaching up to 1,200 kg – around the same as two MINI cars, or two-thirds of a black London taxi! Burmese pythons are the longest reptiles, just in case you were wondering; there are reports of one of these serpents reaching 10 m! Guinness World Records’ herpetology experts inform us that particularly large saltwater croc specimens can grow to 7 m long from snout to tail, but males of this species tend to average 4.9 m. Currently the largest crocodile in captivity is Cassius (c. 100 years old), who measures 5.48 m – the equivalent of two ping-pong tables laid end to end. Captured in 1987 in northern Australia, he was moved to Marineland Melanesia wildlife park – owned by George Craig (the man pictured on the front page with his feet dangling in the pool…) – where he resides to this day. The park is located on Green Island, which sits in the Great Barrier Reef – the world's longest reef. The largest crocodile in captivity ever outsized even Cassius. When transferred to Bunawan Eco-Park in the Philippines in 2011, Lolong lived up to his name with an unprecedented – and as-yet-unsurpassed – total length of 6.17 m. He sadly passed away in 2013. However, if you think saltwater crocs are massive, wait till you hear about one of their ancient ancestors… The terrifying Sarcosuchus imperator is estimated to have measured as long as 12.2 m and weighed as much as 8 tonnes. To put that in context, that made this colossal animal double the length of Lolong and around 7.5 times his weight. It’s little wonder that this mega-predator is sometimes dubbed “super-croc”. Calculating the size of long-extinct creatures always requires an element of educated guesswork, but these extrapolations are based on fairly extensive skeletal remains that were excavated in Africa by US palaeontologist Paul Sereno. Sarcosuchus lived 112 million years ago in the Mid-Cretaceous, making it a contemporary of more familiar record-breaking reptilians, such as Spinosaurus (the largest carnivorous dinosaur – yes, this meat-eating dino was even longer than T. rex), the Microraptor (the smallest dinosaur) and Sauroposeidon (the tallest dinosaur). The crocodile family tree is rather complex, but Sarcosuchus sat in a group near the very beginning of their lineage, known as the Crocodyliformes – hence its record title as the largest crocodyliform ever. From what experts can tell – size aside – the distant relation of today’s crocodilians most likely looked very similar to saltwater crocs (though the end of its snout may have been a bit more bulbous). The very fact that crocs have survived so many millions of years with so few adaptations is testament to their ultra-efficient design. To put its evolution in simple terms: why try and fix something that ain’t broke?
Given their close resemblance, we felt comfortable letting a saltwater crocodile stand in for Sarcosuchus in our to-scale mock-up – part of a new series we have dubbed "snapshots" – which shows off just how big its ancient ancestor really was!

My vriend, daar is geen waarborg nie.
Teks: 1 Timoteus 6:17-21 Dink bietjie hieroor: Hoe bekeer is jou beursie? Vir wie vertrou jy? Is jy ryk in God se oë? Gebed: Here, U praat met my oor geld. Help my om my beursie te bekeer. Help my om my finansies te bestuur, want op my eie mors ek. Amen. Shalom. Gerjo Ben

Stephanie Smith It’s important to watch what you post. These posting pitfalls could endanger your job, your relationships, and your identity. Children (who aren’t yours): Posting photos of children’s smiling faces might seem innocent enough, but it’s best to think twice before submitting photos of minors on social. According to Lawyers.com, child photography and videotaping laws are changing. Run your own business and looking to upload pics from last weekend’s family-filled picnic? Make sure you comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 and its rules regarding posting identifying information including a child’s school, full name, or hometown, first. Also, take note that consent can vary depending on state. As of 2012 in Georgia and New Jersey, for example, laws passed make it illegal for anyone other than a parent to photograph a minor. And there are some things you should never post about your own children on social media, too.

INGREDIENTS: • 2 tablespoons of your favorite cooking oil • ½ cup creamy peanut butter • 1 cup filtered water • 3 cups flour METHOD: Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl – I like to use my hands because it’s pretty thick. Grease a cookie sheet (we used olive oil) and “smush” the dough onto the sheet. Cut dough into desired shapes before baking. I use cookie cutters for treats I plan to give away, but just a pizza cutter for our dogs. Bake for 20 minutes at 180 °C, cool, break apart and serve! I also freeze them in separate batches (a weeks worth) so the treats stay fresh longer. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE PEANUT BUTTER DOES NOT CONTAIN XYLITOL Resep: Marietjie Botha namens Andrea
Why does this work? Science? The world may never know how it works, but there’s no denying that it does work. Maybe the wood absorbs the steam? No doubt it works, and you don’t even need a magic wand. 6

A 17-tonne truck has been lifted into the air, attached to a crane using only glue. DELO, a small manufacturing company of industrial adhesives in Germany, has set a new record for the heaviest weight lifted with glue (non-commercially available) at a hefty 17.20 tonnes on 12 July 2019. Glue was applied to a small aluminum cylinder (the size of a soft drink can) on a crane which then lifted the truck was successfully one metre into the air. The entire weight was suspended for one hour on a bonded aluminum cylinder with a radius of just 3.5 cm. The super strong adhesive was developed especially for the record attempt and is a hightemperature-resistant DELO MONOPOX. The one-component, heat-curing epoxy resins in this product group are known for their high strength and are used in the automotive industry and mechanical engineering. DELO, based in Bavaria, went into the attempt knowing the record had been broken seven times in 12 years. They were confident to raise the bar higher, continuing this ongoing battle for the world record title. The previous record holder, German Aerospace Centre were able to lift 16.09 tonnes in September 2013. 600 Delo employees and two local politicians accompanied the official record attempt and an Official Adjudicator judged the event. They later confirmed the record attempt had been success. "We made it," said Sabine Herold, managing partner of DELO, proudly. "The great result is an absolute team success, which also shows how we work every day. We don’t shy away from challenges and we know our adhesives can live up to extremes." 8

In 10th-grade English, she talked her way into getting up close and personal. The first time I walked into my 10th-grade English classroom in Huntington Park, California, I saw a student at his desk, resting his head on folded arms. I’d never seen a boy with such beautiful, wavy blond hair, the color of country butter, and I was tempted to run my fingers through it as I passed by. This was 1960, and we sat in alphabetical order, which put me at the opposite end of the room from my new crush and his golden tresses. I spent most of that class trying to get a glimpse of his face. At roll call I learned that his name was Vic, but after class, when I scurried to the front of the room to get a good look at him, he was gone. The next morning I nervously waited at the classroom door until Vic finally sashayed by me, but not before he glanced at me with his amazingly blue eyes. He was beyond movie-star handsome! Suddenly, it was hard to catch my breath, my face and neck felt warm and my knees got weak. My heart pounded so loudly—like a bass drum in my ears—I was sure he must have heard it, too. What was happening to me? A perky, pretty girl with an annoying giggle and a tight angora sweater sat one seat a way from Vic. He nicknamed her Bunny because she’d wrinkle her little nose at him whenever he turned in her direction, which was often. It drove me nuts. I couldn’t stop talking about her to my girlfriends in the back of the classroom. Miraculously, Mrs. Christopher solved my dilemma when she demanded that I sit in the front row so I couldn’t chat with my friends. This put me between the bunny in the tight sweater and my Adonis. Whenever my rival leaned forward or back to talk to Vic, I’d lean, too, just to block their view of each other. When I noticed Vic was having trouble with the assignments, I offered to help him after class. He not only took me up on it, he was kind enough to have me do all his homework, too! His grades began to improve, and soon he started carrying my books to class when he saw me in the hall. Along with Vic’s good looks, there was something about him that made me feel safe and special just to be near him. He said that I made him laugh the way no one else could. One day I was going down the steps of the school library as Vic was going up. When our eyes met, we stopped and just stared at each other until the staircase was empty. Then he came up to the step I was on, wrapped his arms around my waist and gave me my first grown-up kiss, the kind I’d seen in the movies. It left me a little dizzy. He lit my world like the Fourth of July, and after 50 years of marriage he still does. 10

Jenn Sinrich This surprising before-bed habit may be keeping you from getting the good night’s sleep you’ve been craving. Use electronic devices: This includes computers, laptops, cell phones, and just about any other electronic device that emits blue light. “Blue light upon striking your retina will shut down your normal production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, not only impairing your ability to fall asleep but also leaving you sleepy in the morning,” says Dr. Rosenberg. Once you are in bed, sleep experts advise not watching TV, but instead reading, stretching, meditating or praying, if that’s your preference. “Keep up this routine for three weeks and most people begin falling asleep without the TV and experience the uninterrupted sleep they deserve,” says Dr. Oexman.

Brooke Nelson Like distracted driving, distracted fueling can be dangerous for your health—and your safety. Try this tip to protect yourself and your fellow drivers at the pump. Re-entering your vehicle while it’s fueling up: You might want to think twice before seeking refuge from the cold, wind, or rain in your car while refueling. Getting in and out of your vehicle builds up electrical charges on your body, which you could then transfer to the dispenser’s nozzle when you grab it. That tiny spark can start a fire. To discharge any static, Virginia-based fire chief Gregory Wormser recommends touching something metal with your bare hand— such as the vehicle door—before reaching for the pump’s handle. 14

LAVENER SOAP JELLIES Soap jellies bounce and jiggle all while cleaning your skin. Have a favorite liquid soap, try using that! Today we used a deliciously smelling (and calming) lavender body wash.
Little ones love taking a bath with soap jellies. The lavender scent of these are perfect just before bedtime! Lavender soap jellies wash away bacteria and moisturize all at the same time. Squeeze them, squish them, or watch them gently wobble. There’s no wrong way to use soap jellies! These would be fun to make for a craft night, a sleepover, or as gifts. You Will Need • 1 package of gelatin (found in the baking isle at the grocery store) • 2/3 cup of hot water • 1/2 cup of lavender scented liquid soap. We used this lavender body wash by dial • Measuring cups • Mixing spoons • Small mixing bowl Directions • Add 2/3 cup of boiling hot water to a mixing bowl • Add the packet of gelatin and stir until the gelatin powder is completely dissolved • Pour in 1/2 cup of lavender scented liquid soap and stir until the ingredients are completely combined • Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray • Let it set for 3 hours until firm (or 1.5 hours in the refrigerator for quicker results) • Use with water on hands or body, depending on the type of liquid soap chosen Just like regular Jello, these jellies will melt if they are left out of the refrigerator. So, we recommend keeping them chilled:) *Soap cubes can be cut into smaller pieces if desired!

Priscila Martinez Anything from an injury to acne can leave behind a lifetime of scarring. Dermatologists share their top strategies on how to get rid of scars and have smoother skin. Take your vitamins: When it comes to patients looking for advice on how to get rid of scars left behind by acne, Deanne Mraz Robinson, MD, FAAD, of Modern Dermatology in Westport, Connecticut has an easy Rx. “Oral niacinamide is a B vitamin (B3) that has amazing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities,” she says. “It’s not only helpful with treating active acne, but it’s also a great treatment for the red scarring associated with healing acne lesions.” Her recommended dosage is 500 mg twice per day for most patients—always speak with your doctor before beginning a supplement. She is also a fan of topical vitamin C, which she calls a powerhouse, “It can help combat hyperpigmented acne scars in addition to helping build new collagen and thus, smooth out acne scarring.”

Tips for a Heart Attack: Dos and Don'ts
Learn about the do’s and don'ts in the event of a heart attack. A possible symptom of heart attack may be severe chest pain. Severe chest pain and a combination of the following symptoms can mean a person is having an acute heart attack, said Associate Professor Marcus Ong, Senior Consultant, Department of Emergency Medicine, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group. Severe chest pain is often described by patients as the worst pain of their lives, and is likened to something very heavy pressing on the chest. Symptoms of a heart attack Possible symptoms of a heart attack include the following: • Pain that appears to spread up to the neck or down to the left arm • Breathlessness • Sweating • Feeling faint and/or nausea Risk factors of heart attack • A history of heart problems The patient is: • Elderly • Smokes The patient suffers from: • Diabetes • High blood pressure • High cholesterol Do’s and don'ts in the event of a heart attack: Do’s • Call an ambulance. • Paramedics are trained to stabilise the patient’s condition with medication, and the ambulance is equipped with a defibrillator to resuscitate the patient should the heart stop en route. • Give clear instructions to the paramedics on finding the patient’s home, have someone wait at a visible location to guide the paramedics and hold the lift open if the patient lives in a high-rise building, so as to save time. • Get ready the patient’s personal effects such as personal identification, medical benefit identification, insurance and other documents for admission. • Have the patient seated in a location where he can be transferred easily to a stretcher. • Give a clear account of what happened. • Let the paramedics know about any drug allergies or past medical history Don’ts • Drive or take public transport to the hospital, even if the patient lives nearby. As the patient’s condition may deteriorate en route, it is safer to wait for an ambulance. Also, ambulances also get priority on arriving at A&E. • Ignore the pain. Get anxious about time wasted when the paramedics perform an on-site ECG.
