'I’M NO DIFFERENT TO ANYONE ELSE' By Connie Suggitt

VIDEO: https://youtu.be/iXs6PPfeSYU Meet Lucky Diamond Rich, the world's most tattooed man. Born in New Zealand as Gregory Paul McLaren, an extraordinary and record-breaking future lay ahead of him. He grew up to be a performer, joining the circus aged just 16. As he got older, his repertoire expanded to include chainsaw-juggling, unicycling and swordswallowing – and a brand-new name. But how did his unusual name come about? "I guess I’m lucky by nature; to be able to juggle a chainsaw, to be able to swallow swords, ride a ten-foot unicycle," he explained. "Diamond came about because my friends call me a bit of a rough diamond, and Rich because I’m rich in spirit." Aside from his name and his profession, Lucky’s stand out feature is of course his heavily tattooed skin. His layers of ink have earned him the record for most tattooed man (current), a record he has held for over a decade. It’s been calculated that Lucky has spent more than 1,000 hours having his body modified by tattoo artists. In addition to his tattoos, Lucky has had his earlobes stretched and has his teeth replaced with silver veneers, as well as various piercings throughout his life. His striking image can evoke many different reactions – not all of which are positive. "What other people think of me is none of my business. I don’t get my self-esteem from what others think of me. I like myself today," he said. "Everyone's different with how they react. It’s like the weather, you can’t predict it, you can’t control it, you just deal with it as it comes. "I’m no different to anyone else, I’m just heavily tattooed. I bleed like anyone else, I have the same sorts of problems that most people have living through their daily life." The road to Lucky’s iconic look has humble beginnings. "The first tattoo I ever had I was 16 - I was travelling with the circus in Australia," he recalled. "I'd never been tattooed before and I got a small juggling club on my hip. I got it on my hip because I didn’t want my mum to see it. "Just one tattoo at a time I guess, that’s how everyone does it." After his initial tattoo, Lucky waited two years before getting another. "I got tattooed again when I was 18, and then I got regularly tattooed as much as I could." "I’ve met a lot of tattooists from all over the world, so I don’t have any particular tattooist that I go to. It's wherever I ended up. I just said 'here’s a section of my body, go for it'. "I was performing all over the world, travelling as a street performer. With the money that I made, I put it back into how I look. It seemed like the right thing to do, karmically. Ten years on from when his obsession began, Lucky had his first body suit completed – a body suit being an extensive themed tattoo that covers the entire torso or the entire body. "I got my first body suit completed when I was 28. Then I started going over the tops of tattoos I already had." "I blacked my entire body in, and I was going over the top of that with white, and then colour over that. It’s just layers on layers." He now boasts more than 200% coverage, including his eyelids, the delicate skin between the toes, the upper part of the ear canals and even his gums.

Despite his multitude of tattoos, Lucky is of the opinion that he just has one. "I have one tattoo and it’s the biggest one on the planet. It’s multi-layered which means I’ve had more than one layer of ink. In some areas it’s three or four layers. I’m 100%, plus layers. "I don’t have any particular favourites, every one has got a story attached to it. My favourite tattoo is the one I’ve ended up with." You’d think that someone who’s received so many tattoos over the years would have at least one regret, but Lucky is adamant he does not. "No. I don’t regret anything that I’ve got or done. I think that’s a fear that people have that aren’t tattooed. You can always get them fixed, covered, changed, or removed." After retaining the title and breaking his own record for so many years, Lucky has decided to be the other end of the needle. "I haven’t been tattooed for about 6 years. These days I tattoo people. I get to enjoy the buzz through doing it for others." Despite not topping up his tattoos in years, no-one has beaten Lucky’s record. He once tied the record with the aptly named Tom Leppard (UK) who resides on the Isle of Skye. Tom has covered 99.9% of his skin with a leopard print design, the skin between the dark spots tattooed saffron yellow. But after adding more layers, Lucky is the clearly in the lead when it comes to record-breaking ink.

"When I was a kid, I’d look in the book, and think how amazing it would be to be that person in the Guinness World Records book. "It’s an honour and a privilege. To have young kids come up and want to get a photo because they recognise me.”

"Waaraan dink jy Rika Etsebeth de Villiers" wil Facebook van my weet sodra ek my blad oopmaak… Ek dink vandag aan die ouderdom wat jou bekruip… Jip, bekruip! Ek is seker daarvan ek sou kon keer as dit my bestorm het… Vandag vertel my een skoolvriendin my… Äg jong, ek lyk soos 'n miljoen dollar, groen en vol kreukels"… Nie eers geweet jy kry 'n miljoen dollar in papiergeld nie. "Jy is so jonk soos jy voel".

James Conaway From the book The Forgotten Fifties‌ This photo, including some never-published shots taken for Look Magazine, transport you back in time. Was life easier, harder, or the same for families in the 1950s, compared to today? Swimsuit competition: Although the modern bikini had been introduced eight years before this pic was taken at a beauty pageant in Park Forest, Illinois, it was still considered too racy for many American women. It took French bombshell Brigitte Bardot wearing a bikini in the 1957 movie And God Created Woman for the two-piece swimsuit to reach the mainstream. Many of the little girls are sporting outfits with modestly flouncy skirts.

(This recipe makes 30+ squares of fudge) INGREDIENTS: • 1x 397g Tin Carnations Caramel • 400g White Chocolate, Chopped • 125g Icing Sugar, Sifted • 350g Rolos METHOD:  Line a tin with parchment paper – I use a 9×9″ square tin as it makes a nice depth of fudge, but 8×8″ will also work!  Put the chopped chocolate into a heavy based pan, along with all of the Caramel – melt on a low heat, stirring often so that the chocolate doesn’t catch on the bottom and burn and so that the ingredients mix together well. (Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a large heat proof bowl, once melted beat in the Caramel and continue to step 3!)  Once melted, tip in the sifted icing sugar and combine well, it make take a bit of beating.  Pour in 3/4 of the Rolos and quickly stir through pour into the tin and smooth over the mixture. Put on the rest of the Rolos where there are any gaps, and press into the top of the fudge. Set the fudge in the fridge for at least 3-4 hours to set, or overnight!  Once set – remove from the tin and cut into the squares.

Lisa Lombardi This is a first aid mistake ER doctors want you to avoid. Spitting on a cut to clean it out: While you may have heard that saliva washes away germs, it’s more like the opposite. “The mouth is colonized with potentially harmful bacteria that can result in a wound infection,” warns Robert Glatter, MD, emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Another don’t: washing a wound in streams or rivers, which can leave you with a parasitic or bacterial infection.

Do this instead: Irrigate the wound with tap water or sterile saline water. Dr. Glatter recommends keeping sterile saline in your first aid kit when traveling in case you have unforeseen injuries. It’s one of the surprising things you need in your first aid kit. 7

Drive with care every day: Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in. Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair. Do not race your car’s engine during start-up: This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside. Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive: The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first 10 to 20 minutes of operation. Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea: The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components. Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights: Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped. Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside: Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs. Extend the life of your tires with careful driving: Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber. When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds: Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.

Consolidate your short driving trips: Most of the wear and tear—as well as the pollution your car generates—takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

After decades of devotion, George and Lorraine renewed their vows in 1995. The tidy stack of letters tied with a ragged red ribbon sat in Mom’s closet drawer for years, holding on to the tale of a special courtship. Only two people knew the story behind those letters—until one Valentine’s Day, when I asked Mom how she met Dad. During World War II my mother, Lorraine Minowicz, attended a USO dinner dance. While she was heading out after the meal, a “tall, dark, handsome, spit-and-polish Marine,” as Mom described him, asked for a dance. She accepted, and they danced the night away. The next day, the Marine (my father, George DeMedeiros) went AWOL to see her again. He called for Lorraine at her dorm, but she refused to come down because she hadn’t done her hair. Really miffed, George left, and she didn’t hear from him again—until fate intervened.

Lorraine got a job in the National Archives in D.C. transcribing classified overseas military strategies. The work was so secret that two armed Marines had to escort her just to file or deliver the papers. While working one day, she came across George’s name. He was stationed on a secret air base in the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. As she copied down his address, the thought occurred to her that this act was a serious breach of security. Then she threw caution to the wind and dropped him a line—the start of their two-year courtship. Days later, she received a letter from George. They wrote often, sharing the details of their day-to-day lives. He eventually proposed in one of the letters, and she accepted. My parents never went on a real date, held hands or kissed, yet Mom left behind her post, a promotion, and everyone she knew to transfer to San Francisco and marry Dad. In one whirlwind weekend, they married and never looked back. They spent more than 56 years together. Even though Dad is no longer here with us, his voice still tells their love story through each of those cherished letters. Whenever I read one, I am transported back to a time when my parents were young, in love and ready for any adventure. 11

Marissa Laliberte Weirdly enough, some even got refunds. This one’s too small.

“A parking lot management company ordered 500 of our Safety Cone Stress Balls (approx. 3.25” tall) thinking they were REAL safety cones. Needless to say, when the order arrived, they definitely couldn’t put those out on the street and expect to keep anyone safe. The company was livid, demanding to get their money back. I guess our cute little stress toys weren’t doing their job and keeping them stress-free. Quality Logo Products later accepted this return because clearly there was a huge misunderstanding. It was way easier to bite the bullet than be possibly ambushed by Safety Cone Stress Balls outside of our office!” —Bret Bonnet, co-founder and president of Quality Logo Products 13

We don’t always want our veggies either, Kitty, but they’re important!

Charles Ponzi, an Italian immigrant, made a fortune off of lying to people. In fact, he was so good at deception that the government named a type of fraud after him—the Ponzi scheme. In 1920, Ponzi tricked thousands of New England residents into investing in a postage stamp speculation scheme. He promised investors that he could provide a whopping 50 percent return in just 90 days. Each time a new investor gave him money, he’d use those funds to pay off earlier investors to create the illusion that they were profiting from a legitimate business. At the height of his huge scam, he raked in $250,000 a day, about $3 million in today’s money. But his days of scheming and scamming caught up to him in August of that same year, when he was charged with 86 counts of mail fraud.

Nichole Fratangelo There’s a reason “tastes like chicken” is such a popular phrase—chicken is cheap, plentiful, and pairs with nearly anything. But raw chicken can be harmful if it’s not handled with care. Cook your next chicken dinner safely by avoiding this common mistake. Rinsing chicken before you cook: Contrary to popular opinion, raw chicken doesn’t need to be (and shouldn’t be) rinsed in any way. Rinsing can cause bacteria on the chicken to splash and cling to surrounding surfaces, rather than eliminating them from the chicken. What to do instead Skip the wash. Send your chicken straight to the frying pan…or oven…or slow cooker. 17

Women have historically gone to extreme measures to meet cultural standards of beauty to attract the opposite sex, from wearing tight corsets to walking in heels. In China this standard of beauty was achieved by footbinding. A young girl’s bones were broken and her feet tightly bound so that her “lotus feet” now appeared small and dainty. In their research book Bound Feet, Young Hands, authors Lauren Bossen and Hill Gates reveal that some girls’ feet were bound at a very young age not to catch a husband, but to force them to work. “What’s groundbreaking about our work is that [footbinding was] not confined to the elite,” Laurel Bossen, the book’s co-author, told HuffPost. The study, Bossen added, dispels the view that the goal was only to try to please men. The authors interviewed over 1,800 women across China to uncover that foot-binding was prevalent among many peasant families to create immobility for girls so that they would stick around doing handwork that families depended on for selling goods.
