HUMPHREY—THE WORLD’S SHORTEST BULL WHO IS ONLY 67 CM TALL By Adam Millward
VIDEO: https://youtu.be/FrF4DASSgHY
Traditionally, bulls are the sumo-wrestlers of the farmyard: big, heavy, immovable. At least that’s how the stereotype goes. But as long-time fans of Guinness World Records (GWR) will know, occasionally we love to flip convention on its head. At just 67.6 cm high at the withers (shoulder-blades), as confirmed by a vet on 27 April 2018, this Miniature Zebu is the new shortest bull. He is a full 4 cm shy of the previous holder, Chegs HHAR Golden Boy from California, USA. As their name suggests, Miniature Zebus are known for their diminutive proportions, averaging in the 91–96.5 cm range. Indeed the breed has a cap on height, with any specimen standing over 106 cm barred from registration. However, Humphrey is small even for his kind. His stature also falls way short of his immediate family, with his father and mother having stood 90.1 cm and 81.9 cm, respectively. Proving the hit-and-miss nature of cattle breeding, a sibling of Humphrey stands at a comparatively "lofty" 83.8 cm. For some perspective, the world’s shortest cow would make even Humphrey look tall – relatively speaking. Manikyam, a Vechur (the smallest breed of cattle), was verified to be 61.1 cm from hoof to withers in 2014. She lives in Kerala in southern India – the region to which Vechurs are native.
Humphrey, meanwhile, hails from the USA. He resides on Lime Creek Farm in Kalona, Iowa – home to the Gardner family: Joe, Michelle ("Shelly") and Arden. When they bought Humphrey at auction in May 2017, their new addition was so small that they assumed they were buying a calf! It was only once they collected his documentation that they realized he was, in fact, two years old and therefore fully grown. The Gardners aren't the only ones to have been deceived by Humphrey's age. "Shock and awe are usually the biggest reactions that we get…" owner Shelly Gardner revealed. "It's hard for people to believe there are animals so small who are full-sized. "Most people, when they think of a bull, think of a large animal and he is not that by any means!" Despite his superlative size, he isn’t given any special treatment on the ranch. On a daily basis, he is out with the three Miniature Zebu cows in a pen that neighbours another with much-larger Angus Cross cattle. "He seems to get along with all the other animals on the farm quite well," Shelly added. "Our dogs really seem to like him a lot." A typical day for Humphrey involves "…hanging out, eating hay, grain or grass." He is a breeding bull so he has a job to do, but, as Shelly points out, "there’s no scheduling that!" Having said that, the family is hoping for the pitter-patter of tiny hooves at some point in 2019. Could one of Humphrey’s calves one day claim his father’s record? "Potentially. Anything’s possible," Shelly said philosophically. "With this breed, it's very hard to determine what their height will actually be." There are lots of big plans afoot for this little bull: "We're hoping to start taking him to shows and breed expos, so that the Miniature Zebu breed can become more well known in the USA. "We’re also looking to do some children's books [about] Humphrey and his adventures." Talking of books, how does Shelly expect to feel when she sees her mini mooer in GWR 2020? "To see Humphrey in the book will just be a surreal feeling. It’s been such a long time coming for a chance to earn something so infamous. "Don't count the little guy out. Just because you are small doesn't mean you can't accomplish amazing things!"

Hoe wil jy jouself sien? Suksesvol? Skep ‘n positiewe prentjie in jou gedagtes.
Hopelose einde of eindelose hoop? Gebed: Here, dankie dat U my uniek gemaak het. Leer my om myself te aanvaar net soos ek is. Amen.
Uitdaging: Glo in jouself. Jy is baie waardevol. Respekteer jouself. Aanvaar jouself. Gerjo Ben 3

Tina Donvito Maybe she’s born with it, as the commercial goes, or maybe it’s these other factors super-sizing attractiveness. Smile more if you’re female Much of the science of attraction is rooted in biology—and who we think would make a good mate to reproduce with. So, how to be more attractive is tapping into what the opposite sex is looking for. Smiling in women was shown in a University of British Columbia study to be more attractive than other expressions; but the same didn’t hold true for men. “People typically associate expressions of happiness with femininity,” says Alec Beall, PhD, a UBC psychologist and one of the authors of the study. “This gender normative inconsistency could be responsible for the relative unattractiveness of male happiness.” Smiling makes women look friendly and “sexually receptive” (in other words, more interested in having sex). “Evolutionarily, men have been programmed to seek out women who will be receptive to their advances,” Dr. Beall says.

Haus Hohenzollern
Haus Hohenzollern was built as a hotel for Hermann Dietz in around 1906. Despite its elegance it had a racy reputation, reputedly used as a brothel and gambling house. The gambling got so out of hand that the magistrate revoked the hotel’s licence. It was converted to sectional title units in the 1980s. 7

Marissa Laliberte With more and more items connecting to the Internet, it’s easier than ever for hackers to gain access. Smart TVSecurity research firm ReVuln found a vulnerability in Samsung Smart TVs in 2012 that could open the door for hackers to access files on connected USBs, plus get total control to see and adjust settings on the TV itself. Given that Samsung’s TVs paired video face recognition with audio recordings, security experts feared the TVs—and hackers—could record families when they didn’t intend. And it wasn’t just whistleblowers. In 2017, files published on Wikileaks alleged that the CIA and its British counterpart MI5 developed malware called Weeping Angel that could record audio when the TV appeared to be off, and the team was trying to add video to its capabilities. It doesn’t mean the government is spying on innocent binge watchers, but the implications of vulnerable TVs are disconcerting. "If you could have any three things, what would you want?” Eleven-year-old Ruby Kate Chitsey loves asking that question, but it’s not a game she plays at recess. She asks it at nursing homes in the Harrison, Arkansas, area, where she lives. Even more amazing, she then sets out to make the residents’ wishes come true. Ruby Kate has long been close to older folks. Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, is a nurse practitioner who works at nursing homes in northwest Arkansas, and Ruby Kate often tags along with her in the summer. “I’ve never found them scary at all, so I’m able to just go up to them and ask if they need anything,” she says. Last May, Ruby Kate noticed a resident named Pearl staring out a window. She seemed sad. “What are you looking at?” Ruby Kate asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner after a visit. Pearl didn’t know when she would see her dog again. Ruby Kate and Amanda asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn’t allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after hers. Because Pearl was a Medicaid recipient, she got only $40 a month to spend on personal items such as clothes, haircuts, and pet supplies. The Chitseys also learned that many nursing home residents are unable to afford even the smallest luxuries. So Ruby Kate decided to do something about it. She started by asking residents what three things they wanted most in the world. “That’s a lot simpler than going, ‘Hey, what do you want?’” she explains. “They can understand you better.” Amanda worried that people would ask for cars and other things an 11-year-old wouldn’t be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, pants that fit properly, and even just a prayer. “It broke me as a human,” Amanda says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many items as we could.” Using their own money, the Chitseys granted the wishes of about 100 people in three months. Then they started asking for donations. The good people of Harrison responded enthusiastically, so much so that Amanda set up a GoFundMe page, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents, hoping to collect $5,000. They hit their goal in a month. After -GoFundMe named Ruby Kate a Kid Hero and promoted her story internationally this past January, Three Wishes raised $20,000 in 24 hours and more than $250,000 in five months. With those funds, the Chitseys were able to get more creative: One resident asked for a man cave, so they got him a Walkman and stocked his fridge with snacks. Another wanted to go to a friend’s out-of-state wedding; they gave her money for gas and food. Earlier this year, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents became a nonprofit and launched its first nationwide chapters. One of its new goals is to set up a communal laptop in one nursing home in each state. Ruby Kate doesn’t plan to stop there. “I consider kindness to be my hobby,” she says, “and I’m very good at it.” Ruby Kate isn’t the only youngster with a hobby of kindness. At one New York High School, students turned a single dollar into a truly inspirational act of kindness. 10

Charlotte Hilton Andersen Polar bears aren’t white, strawberries aren’t berries, and the Earth isn’t round—we’ll have you rethinking everything you thought you knew for sure! A strawberry isn’t actually a berry—but a watermelon is. Raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries aren’t true berries. The scientific definition of “berry” is a plant that has three distinct layers: an outer skin (exocarp), a fleshy middle (mesocarp), and—here’s the key—internally contained seeds (endocarp). So because their seeds are on the outside all those berries aren’t actually berries. However, watermelon, bananas, grapes, and eggplants are all technically berries!

Hopefully, you’ve stopped believing this—or never did, since the theory that vaccines cause autism was always a myth. Plenty of people believed that the shots were risky because of thimerosal, a preservative in some vaccines. However, thimerosal contains a type of mercury that the body can easily clear (and only tiny amounts are used). Even though experts consider it to be extremely safe, manufacturers nonetheless have reduced or eliminated its use. Still, worries about vaccines continue to pop up with alarming frequency, says Purvi Parikh, MD, an allergist and immunologist with the Allergy & Asthma Network. In fact, so many people have been skipping vaccinations, there have been outbreaks of diseases that doctors haven’t seen in decades. The bottom line, Dr. Parikh says: “Vaccines do not cause autism. They also do not make you sick by infecting you with the illness.” That goes for the flu shot, too. What’s injected is a dead virus, so it’s impossible to contract an illness from the shot. People who experience a reaction are feeling their immune system response kick in. Even vaccines that contain live forms of a virus, such as the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, use weakened forms of the virus and are safe for most people who don’t have weak immune systems. “Vaccines save lives and prevent illness,” Dr. Parikh says.

Lisa Marie Conklin Think that brushing your teeth and washing your face are the only things you should do before hitting the sack? Think again. We asked the experts for more health moves we should always do before bedtime. Do some easy yoga If you sit all day, chances are your hips and hamstrings are tight by the end of the day. “The tension in these tissues compounds over time and plays a significant contributing role in back & hip pain, says Tiffany Cruikshank, founder of Yoga Medicine and author of Meditate Your Weight. To get relief try these two Cruikshank recommends: Supine hamstring pose: Lie on your back and loop a towel or strap around the ball of your right foot, then extend your leg in front of you. (The key is to find a gentle stretch where your low back and hips can still relax.) Bend the raised leg if your leg is lower than the height of your hips, this will put a little slack on your hamstrings so you can relax. Take a few deep breaths to unwind as you stay for 30 to 60 seconds then repeat on the left side. Figure four pose: Lie on your back with your feet on the floor. Take your right ankle and place it on your left knee. If you feel a stretch in your hips here simply stay put, otherwise you can draw your left leg in toward you and grab the back of your left thigh or your left shin. Relax your head and shoulders as you lean your torso back into the floor. Take a few deep breaths as you relax your low back and hips here. Stay for 1 to 2 minutes then repeat on the second side.

Lisa Lombardi Check your first aid kit: Can it really get you through an emergency? ER doctors reveal the items you probably left out. A condom No, not for that reason: “A condom can actually be a lifesaver in an emergency,” says Robert Glatter, MD, an emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. “It can store water, serve as a tourniquet, or be used for wound irrigation under pressure.” Irrigating or cleaning a wound under high pressure helps remove debris or foreign material. “The high pressure created by squeezing the condom helps to create a powerful jet of water, ” Dr. Glatter adds. Anybody can do this trick by poking a small hole in the condom and squeezing it when it’s full of water.
